I know 2 Brits who returned to the UK to get treated by the NHS. They just had to declare they were returning to the UK permanently. One guy had no money so they gave him a council house. I think Kev does not want to leave Thailand, which is understandable.

I dont think the 6 months out of the UK thing is true. I'm an expat living in Dubai and I go back to the UK for 2 months every year. I always go to the doctors and use the NHS. They dont question me about it. They said as long as I'm registered to an address in the UK it's fine.

If you want to live or retire abroad make sure you have a registered address in the UK where your mail can be sent and come back to the UK at least once a year. Makes me laugh when people say the NHS is free, it`s not, you contribute to it all your life and then when you leave the UK they take it off you. The only ones it`s free for are those that come to the UK having never paid into the system, go figure. Same with the state pension, frozen at the point it`s first claimed if you are in Thailand, not so in Spain etc So you are punished for your choices in retirement whilst others aren`t. All the best Kev.

The NHS thing is a disgrace Kev. The daftest part is when you reach retirement age you cease paying national insurance contributions so if you live in the UK or not you don't pay anymore into the system. So where is the logic in that? If someone had moved overseas before they had paid in the required number of qualifying years i could understand it but when you reach retirement age you have paid years more than that. It's just plain wrong. Same thing with the state pension. It's frozen at the point you leave the UK in some countries but not in others. Thailand is one of them unfortunately. Here's a good one. If you are resident in the USA you get the annual increment. If you are in Canada or New Zealand which are both commonwealth countries you don't. Go figure. There's a whole crazy list of anomalies like that on the DWP website. I know it's because they have reciprocal agreements with some countries and not others but why not? There is an elderly lady over here who has been running an online campaign for years to try and change this but the government refuse, they say it will cost too much. Just as a final kick in the nuts even when i move overseas the government will still tax my income from my state and works pensions at the full rate of income tax. B*stards!

As long as you have paid at lease 10 full years contributions then you will qualify for something. You can check your contributions credits on Gov.uk pensions just open your account to get your I'd & password & your NI #. I will try send you link to your email. Good luck.

@Lee Adams - I don't want to argue with KEV and you are correct but, in some NHS areas within the UK once you are out of the UK for more than three months, you can be de-registered by your doctor despite the fact that you have a permanent address in the UK. If you are de-registered from a doctors practice, it is illegal for a doctor to proscribe any medication. All they can do is refer you to your local hospital for treatment. Failing that, you will be able to go to any hospital in the UK without a doctor's referral, with your passport and receive free treatment there. Provision is also made for inclusion on an "Emergency Patient Treatment" list, especially for cancer patient treatment. At the back of your registration card, if you have been issued with one it states, "Please return this card to the address above if you are leaving the UK for more than three months or hand it to an Immigration Officer on departure". This plastic Medical Card replaced the old paper National Health Card which shows your National Insurance number. You do not loose any benefits including state pension rights if you have fully contributed to the National Insurance Scheme at the time of your retirement. If you return to the UK and have a permanent address there, you are entitled by law to medical treatment as a UK citizen and to re-register with a doctor of your choice, always assuming of course that the practice will take you on their books in the area you live in.

Love you Kev, and Rob for all that he has done, and glad to see you improving, but you're sadly wrong on so many financial and NHS information details concerning a possible return - please don't rule out returning. It need not be a problem in any respect, quite the opposite, in fact... get some accurate advice...

As long as you keep a postal address you should’ve been fine. However, if you need to pay rent, food etc probably costs the same as what you would pay for first class treatment in Thailand.

A little satire, you could always take a flight to the Mexican/Us border, cross over to America and demand EVERYTHING and when they ask your name tell them mohammed. They will treat you like a king just dont make the mistake of telling them you are an American veteran, you might get arrested.Hope you found it funny Kev,but its an option!!!!!!Really, get well soon, you sound good,God bless.

It amazes me that so many Brits think that after they emigrate to another country they believe they can return at a future date to have free treatment. it's not the case. Just having a British passport does not entitle you to a free lifetime of health service.

You are spot on Kevin. You need to pay 150 pct of the cost for NHS treatment if you become non resident in UK. One of the pitfalls of becoming non UK resident

You will get treatment on the NHS for a medical emergency regardless. I have a pal who returned to the UK from Thailand who got treatment with no problem. Also, the UK state retirement increases are preserved for those who live in the Philippines. Go figure

Saw on another UK vlogers channel that UK national heath will only treat for free an expat that has been out of the country for a while if he/she can prove that they are back in the country to stay for good. The key words being "resident" rather than "citizen". Also seem to recall the requirement to be back in the country for 6 months. but not sure on that one. I know Aussies are good for 5 years out of the country before Medicare abandons them.

Kev , I prayed for you brother . I see your doing well , give all glory to God . You've lost weight and looking good . Kev i gave a serious question maybe you can answer for me please . I'm retiring to Thailand next spring . I'll be 50 by then and i have vacation there many times . so my question is once i get a condo to rent can i get my mail sent there and it no longer go to America ? I don't have family here to take my mail and my retirement check income comes directly in the mail . unfortunately they will not direct deposit it . i will get the 800,000 in a thai bank and have a bank to cash my check but where can they send this retirement check too ? Maybe a PO box there ? please , please help me with this question .

Your looking stronger Kevin. I wish you strength to keep fighting. I don't understand your protractors concerning your NHS. Anyone should know coverage disappears when you lose your residency after 6 months. We have the same situation here in Can. They'll still take your taxes though.lol . Anyway I wish you happier days ahead. Cheers.

It’s up to you, sir. I reckon to start drinking a detox water made with turmeric, cinnamon and oregano oil. Also brew your own reishi mushroom tea. Drink these at least 3 times per day. If you can find a stalk of celery, you can juice it and drink it 3 times per day. Good luck!

This was a very interesting topic regarding the NHS and ex-pats returning for health care. The American Medicare rules for people abroad seem to be quite different. Medicare Part A and Part B and Part D do not cover foreign medical expenses. But as long as the ex-pat was eligible for and signed up for Medicare and paid the premiums, whether within the U.S. or abroad, there doesn't seem to be a restriction on traveling back to the U.S. for medical care under the program. The Supplemental coverage also seems to work the same way, keep paying the premiums, they don't care where the subscriber lives, but services are only covered within the U.S. Supplemental Plan F is very good, it covers all co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles, plus covers extended hospital stays.

Thanks for making me think...I am moving to the Philippines, probably for the rest of my life..I will certainly check Medicare rules in America..I will always have my banking and a address here in USA..if I was a Englishman I would certainly return once or twice a year to keep my health insurance for sure..I am a cancer survivor and been in remission for many years from malignant melanoma cancer..I plan on getting a complete check up once or twice a year including blood tests and x Ray's..I have checked and it's not expensive at all.. first sigh of any health problems and I will be on the next plane back to USA..no matter how careful we plan we are always going to come across the unknown scenario we could not plan for..I been cancer free for over six years but I never know what tomorrow brings..I plan on visiting Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I will try and look you up and buy you lunch if you like..I hope and pray that everything turns out ok for you and keep on keepin on and watch your six..

Sad to say the USA will not extend medicare out of the US. If you are able , you can return to the USA and get back on medicare. But you will receive your social security, no problem. Buying a Thai health plan is the best.
