I love that Chromebook "just works" in regards to not having bloatware. Every Windows machine I've ever had starts great and then slowly creeps down in performance the more I use it and the more programs are installed. On Chromebook I'm not worried about drivers, updates, uninstalling stuff, doing factory resets every 6 months, etc.

Can I chime in with something relevant? I very recently jumped out of the Apple ecosystem to a Chromebook (which I upgraded to 2tb of storage) and heavily make use of the fact that modern Chromebooks also have a full install available of Debian Linux. Between Debian's entire repository, Snap, and Flakpak options at your fingertips, you can use pretty much any native Linux desktop app, well, natively! Once installed, no cloud necessary. So I spent a little more money for a higher end device, and having a triad of platforms seamlessly working together on one device (ChromeOS + Android + Linux) is just ridiculously spectacular.

That's what I run on my System 76 Oryx Pro, Debian 12~! I've purchased the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 Ryzen 3 Laptop a few days ago ($352 on Amazon) and am curious to see what it can do at that price point. Can I get VS Code, install the default-jdk, use Scala 3, & create and save html files on a Chomebook? that is the question.
@underconfident_asmr3 ай бұрын
@@josephglover4546 Once you install the Linux container, you can use anything in the full Debian repositories, plus add your own as with any Debian based distro, not to mention snap or flatpak. I don't know what squat about coding so the stuff you just rattled off, if it installs under Linux, well you will be in a complete Linux environment (inside the linux container.) If you are comfortable with the command line you are in the same environment you already know about 🙂

Great video and I can relate to what you’re saying. I’ve been practicing law for 29 years and for the bulk of that time I’ve used windows desktops and laptops. The legal profession has become more and more web based in recent years so I’ve started using a Chromebook that I had sitting around basically collecting dust. The Chromebook works so much better that I am considering upgrading to one of the 2n1 Chromebook Plus devices. New subscriber!

I recently switched from Mac OS to Chromebook. Granted I do not do a lot of things that most do as far as editing videos and such. I am a safety inspector so I purchased the ASUS Chromebook CM30 2-in-1 with a stylus (pen) and a keyboard attachment 8GB Ram and 128GB storage for $300 and I have to say that it took me a few minutes to get use to the keyboard but other than that it does everything that I need it to do and more. Additionally, I switched to an android phone and it all just comes together smoothly.

I got a 16 inch ASUS Chromebook Plus with 12th gen i3, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD and it was "open box" clearance at Best Buy for $366 after all the taxes and stuff. I'm typing this comment on it right now. It's been incredible and I love that it has a touch screen which my old Macbook Pro didn't have. As a bonus I checked the settings and the battery cycle was 0 meaning I basically got a brand new machine that was opened once, put right back in the box, and sold as used at a massive discount.

Neat video. I agree fully with you that Windows has become bloatware. Part of the problem is Microsoft's divided interests. It only makes 12% of profit on Windows but it makes 50% on cloud, server, and Office services. Guess where their attention will be? That's why Windows is becoming a bloated do-all platform. It's becoming less of an operating system and more of an interfacing with Microsoft's servers, constantly phoning home and asking (demanding) more of your personal information to do basic tasks. It's become a real pain, which is why Windows 11 still has not overtaken Windows 10 in market share despite being on the market for three years. I think if it were not for the Chromebook you would probably like Samsung Dex. It projects a desktop-like experience all from the phone plugged into a monitor. I hear Google is working on their own desktop mode for Android 15. While early examples are nowhere near Dex, some speculate that Google will eventually port Chrome OS to phones. One day you may not even need the laptop. The phone will do it all.
@chadleo214 ай бұрын
Love it! And I totally agree on the direction. That'll be awesome whenever we can run everything from our phones. I have done the Android 15 beta and use the kind of Dex version and I'm super excited for it. They definitely had a lot of bugs at the time though. Something about Samsung and Dex I can just never get behind the UI. I don't know why

If you like chrome os try fedora Linux faster os on any hardware. By the way Chrome OS does run the Linux kernel. The biggest downside to Chrome is that it's only supported up until a certain point in time where as with Linux you'll get support forever.

Video editing and photography do not come close to as good as a macbook w/ any m series chip. Now if you are doing super light video editing/photo editing, most relativley new computers can handle that & since how optimized chromebooks are, you typically have a lot less bloat and backround ram&cpu usage so it can be/seem quicker. But it is not touching an m series mac. Also big files, scrubbing through videos, playback multi layers sound/editing projects will be in a different universe with an m series mac vs a chromebook. Apple silicon is top notch. I do agree wholeheartedly though that for the normal person, there is no better bang for the buck computer than a chromebook. The way chome OS is optimized is a thing of beauty. Downloadable software is the difference maker. If you don't run software on your computer and are mostly a browser person, chomebooks are for sure the way to go.
