IMPORTANT: Please take note of my disclaimers at 1:14 mark in the video. 1. These are MY PERSONAL OPINIONS (i.e. personal preferences). We are all entitled to preferences and to collect what we like, and we are all allowed to question specific aspects of the current Hobby zeitgeist. 2. This is about COLLECTING, not INVESTING. Collecting is all about what you like. This video is not about bashing what others like. In fact, it's exactly the opposite. That's why I said I'm sure you might like them more than me in the intro at 0:14. Most people like these things more than me. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙌

Love your content T-Pot but this video is concerning to me and I have to disagree in part. There is a hate for base movement and this doesn’t help us progress the hobby. The rookie card is the most impactful card in the hobby. It’s sacred and it should be respected and protected by us the hobby. The silent majority can not afford essential credentials. You make some solid points but why do we want devalue iconic base rookie cards? I don’t get it and it forces me to lean into elitist mentality and I don’t want to go there. Be well thanks for your honest take on this. Although I don’t agree I still gave you a thumbs up! 👍🏽

I have said this many times here and on everyone that is part of the hate base rookie card movement! This people have distressed the hobby and this is part of the problem. They pumped refractor, 1/1 and kaboooms and all kind of stupid variations. on the other hand they treat rookie base cards like trash and they will try to give you psa 10s in the morning, on the evening and as a desert.

Hey Victor, Great to hear from you! I think you may have really missed the intention of this video. Go to 1:14 and double check that you heard my disclaimers. I also just pinned those as a comment to ensure others see/hear them. This is all about my personal preferences for collecting, which I'm entitled to have. Specific to the rookie card, I would argue that the manufacturers - other than maybe Upper Deck with hockey YG's, more than anyone, have adulterated the rookie card and completely watered it down by making thousands of "rookie cards" instead of keeping just one or a few true RCs. I understand Essential Credentials are expensive. I didn't say I like it because it's expensive. I said I would rather have the EC over the Hakeem RC for the same price. Again, that's important. Do you know how many $5k+ cards I own in my PC? Zero. Technically my Kobe Gold Heirs refractor was once more than that...sadly it has decreased. 😭 I also didn't say anything about how rookie cards should be devalued. I said I don't really understand why people value them more than other cards that are more rare, but the market sets prices and clearly likes to focus on specific, iconic cards. And that's okay! 😃 Hope that helps and hope you're well!

I agree with pretty much everything you said lol. I usually buy PSA 9 and I buy Refractors, on card autos and game worn patches. Zero interest in sticker autos and "not associated" patches. I'd rather have a 2-3 color patch than a logoman. Also not a fan of all the colored blue/green/purple/zebra etc... refractors/prizms. Just the normal refractor or maybe black refractor. I think silver prizms look better than the golds. I don't mind 86 fleer card design, but what I can't stand is when the black edges to the yellow ring aren't perfect. On a lot of them (even some PSA 10s) if you look close you'll see the yellow go outside the black lines.

Biggest one not on your list is jersey # cards. Why do I care that the serial number matches their jersey, a 1/99 instead of 2/99 makes zero difference to me. I have had deals at card shows fall through because the dealer will ask hundreds over last comp "because jersey number match". Pass. I'll take the non-jersey number match for a discount all day. Some good points made in the video. Bottom line is as a collector it doesn’t matter. What we collect is what we find interest in. Doesn’t matter if it’s junk era or modern. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. From a resale perspective, I personally would rather collect rookies as I think they are easier to move. As a dealer I constantly run into the challenge of valuing rare low pop low print run inserts. It can become a deal killer. It’s less of an issue with higher pop and print run cards although the value may be less generally speaking. It’s easier to comp out and move I feel. Closing case in point. Topps can put out a commemorative 1 of 1 Hank Aaron and make it the coolest looking ever and auction it off for 1 million dollars and give me the option of owning the best possible rookie I can get for the same price and I will take the Hank Aaron rookie every time. That’s me personally speaking.

@17:32 the real question... other than why would you even buy a Brook Lopez card... is why would you buy a card at all when you could buy a whole game-used, and dated, jersey... for half the price of the card?.. 🤷‍♂
@tampahomeinvestorsllc7559

The main issue is what you said at the end, it’s really just the overproduction of everything that ruins things. That also leads to the ridiculous issue of non game worn RPA cards from high end products. I would rather wait a year for RPA’s to include game worn swatches. This is one of the main reasons I moved over to collecting almost exclusively hockey cards. Upper Deck almost always uses game worn jersey swatches for their RC’s and veteran cards. Rookie cards would then have so much more long term value. I know what you mean with RC’s sometimes being overvalued just for the fact that they’re a RC, but I would say that in regards to modern, if they had game worn swatches, then that’s a compete game changer.
@tyrithofmuse
@tyrithofmuse Жыл бұрын
Almost no Upper Deck RPAs are game worn. You can get certain subsets like rookie year Limited Logos patch autos that are GU, but The Cup RPAs, Premier, Ultimate Collection, etc have pretty much always all been event/player worn cards.

@tampahomeinvestorsllc7559 Жыл бұрын
@@tyrithofmuse They trend to at least make sure the major stars have game worn, of course not everything is, but Upper Deck is by far the best company for actually putting Game Used memorabilia in RC’s and especially Veteran cards. I can’t stand how Panini ruins so many good veteran cards with the fake patches. Hockey probably has more game used inventory available vs something like football, so that helps for sure. Look at all the Flawless Ver cards with “Not from any particular game or season”, it’s insane. Look at McDavids cards, most of his RC’s are game used, to me, those are real RC’s.
@tyrithofmuse
@tyrithofmuse Жыл бұрын
@@tampahomeinvestorsllc7559 I think it's very hard to get football game used jersey in a usable condition these days. Put aside the 17 game seasons - they pretty much tape the entire jersey onto the pads these days. But check out The Cup RPAs - guys like McDavid, Matthews, Pettersson, etc are all event/player worn. They don't have anything that's fully disclaimed like Panini, but it doesn't matter how big the name is - it's not going to be game worn even in the premium sets. Very few true RPAs in any sport ever have been - it's mostly just limited to Topps Dynasty and Panini Flawless, plus some of those UD subsets.

@@joerussell9574 Yeah, I'm not so sure those will be sustainable in value. There's way too many of them, and a ton more still sealed. I think alot of the price in value is people just not educated enough to know what true scarcity is. Obviously, a numerical grade doesn't make the card rare. Once people understand what true scarcity is, I think prices will blow up on rarer stuff, like his Tiffany and Star Company rookies. This is why, if I'm buying a rookie card of Griffey, I'm opting for Topps/Bowman Tiffany, Fleer Glossy, or Star Company limited sets. Outside of that, its original photographs and/or rookie game tickets. I own two tickets of Griffeys very first game into the starting lineup with Mariners back on March 4, 1989...a month before his regular season debut. It was at Tempe Diablo Stadium and it holds a capacity of less than 10,000 fans!! Much rarer than his regular season debut, which had an attendance of over 40,000 fans! It would be cool if they could consolidate all our sports experiences, things like having an account where you can register tickets for games you personally have attended, to keep track of and take pride in the games you are going to see, or autographs you can authenticate to specific dates, then on the next level if they are dating short printed patch cards with the exact dates and games they were worn in, people can then go out and not just hunt for patches from big games by the player, but even from games they have attended personally. I think it would be a nice factor to add to people's experiences and give them a greater more personally inclusive attachment in the future.

As a person without the same means or resources opposed to most people I see on this channel I believe that Collecting & the hobby was built on SHARING so was focused on sharing each others common interests opposed to being about Hoarding Rare Resources, Showing Off, being Elitist, bragging, & having ego. Not sayin your that way TPott bc i generally like your opinions & views of the hobby... What good is a collection if others cant relate to it since the hobby is built on common interests as a community? I would rather listen to how much a 1986 Topps Traded Bo Jackson rookie meant to someone growing up over any day over why someone invested in a green pmg; bc of profit potential obviously. Hoarding resources & rarity isnt a good thing imo. But being someone who doesnt have the same resources, family support, or means could 100% skew my opinion. Im not going to be hateful or angry at those who prefer investing over collecting however I cant be silent when i think its detrimental teaching the next collecting generation that Hoarding Rarity for your Ego, status, & bragging rifghts mentality is a good thing.... Again not personally directed at TPott per se but we need more people pushing messages of morals & ethics above all else in the hobby & society in general. For example; How many people can relate to Logan Paul & his pokemon illustrator? Not many & i believe they follow more from placues of envy, lust, jealousy, gluttony, & the coveting of it. Opposed to actually being relatable & shareable to same community hes entered thus being about collecting & the hobby. Even in todays ultra greedy immoral unethical business practices our greater society still doesnt think hoarding rare resources is something good or that should be done... So why do we want that mentality in the hobby?

@@MarketMovers awesome look forward to it. Also I immediately thought more on it after leaving my comment bc I know I personally chase the rarest I can at the prices I can afford so its not quite as black & white as I make it out to sound above. One of the best things about growing older & wiser is being able to reflect on your opinions whether new info changes it or pushes it another direction bc its so important to understand that everything in life is shades of grey not black & white. There are always acceptions to the rule so just another reminder not to be so quick to draw my line in the sand or make assumptions. So I believe there is room for both in this great hobby & business... Those that grew up only having base cards & rookies so will probably continue to do so to keep their collections consistent & on theme & curated to their liking while our generation (I'm 40) learn from that past generation realizing what actually made things monetarily valuable is true rarity & scarcity which is vastly different from something that has emotional or nostalgic value which could be the most overprinted card in the world. Not a true story attached to me but just as an example say Your Uncle Bob a pack of cards 4 you 4 Xmas & opened it together pulling a Cal Ripken Jr all-star card that reminded & prompted Uncle Bob to share stories of him going to his 1st game or meeting a player or whatever & thus in turn giving that base set or card much more meaning from then on consciously or subconsciously reminding you of that time & person...

@MarketMovers Жыл бұрын
Card Ladder is a nice product. The big difference between CL and MM is that we have 2.4 million featured cards vs 48k in CL, enabling data that is actually meaningful at a player price movement level (our player might be tracking overall price change on 500 cards vs 5 cards in a CL player index...or specifically, as an example, CL has 1,777 Michael Jordan cards (which is the most of any player, by far) whereas Market Movers has EVERY notable MJ card totaling just shy of 15,000 MJ cards in MM database. Our database also isn't 33% basketball, but we have significantly more basketball cards overall. We have cards from all sports as well as TCG and non-sports/pop culture. Market Movers features Price alerts, Intelligence ratios, a much more comprehensive charting tool, a Deals page to find items for sale under last comp. If you'd like to try Market Movers for yourself, use promo code DIVE to get 14 days free and 20% off.

You don't care about "first" but one of the main reasons for liking the older Olajuwon card was because it was "innovative...ahead of its time...and set precedent"...I understand your opinion, but I thought that was funny lol

Ole t pot had me with him for the first third of the video. I'm a mid 80s born baby as well and since I got back into the hobby in 2015'ish I began stacking 97 planet metals and such other awesome chase inserts as they were the core of my collecting dreams in my 90s childhood. But I think the 86 fleer basketball (comeback year into pack issued existence) set looks visually great and the Jordan's specifically are even moreso eye appealing cards. Feels a bit like Mr Pot mayhaps be trying a bit too hard with his "hot take" here for the clicks or what have you. But we all have our opinions so sure, 86 fleer basketball is fugly sell them all, especially your authenticated high appeal Jordan's.

I agree with everything you stated in this video...and I will take it a step further...if your buying or trading for any sportscards based primarily on the future value in the hopes to profit from the sale of that card...you are NOT a collector. And before anyone gets salty...im only stating MY opinion that is neither shining a negative or a positive light. So chill Winston. But I digress... Collecting sportscards is a hobby...meant to be fun and a distraction from everyday life...in regards to adult collectors. Because if we are being honest...sportscards, originally...were intended for children...actually the cards themselves I believe were secondary to the bubblegum. And yes...im aware of tobacco cards...and again...they were secondary. Bottom line...what im trying to say...is the super expensive cards of today are really just a very bad joke that is being played on the hobby...the over-printing...the hundreds and even thousands of 1 of 1's being made for just 1 player in just 1 year...the super inflated price points for boxes/packs...the nonexistence of any transparency to go along with mind numbingly bad customer service...the horrendous quality control that every card company displays with each passing day...the obvious fraud/deception and overall corrupt behavior that goes on with the breaking culture with not only the blessing but a helping hand from the card companies....etc...etc...etc. I could go on and on but I think most people will understand. I believe in American values...so naturally I believe capitalism is the best...however, the greed and disregard for basic principles being shown by the card companies as well as the vultures in the hobby...with the negative hobby gossip...OMG the sky is falling chicken little routine being displayed on social media...primarily on KZbin is horrible....and most people know it...but wont say it publicly because why...? No more views? No more ad revenue? Insecurity? Ignorance? Scared? We all can't be the cool kid millionaire with the best cards ever... Anyways...thats my 2 pennies. Carry on.

yeah there is Cuz ive Never sent anything in For Grading id rather just buy more Cards... so my collection can Stihl be Multiplied it can Always Be Graded..and your collection can only be multiplied by grading once.. and mostly should only be graded once... if anyone wants to crack and Resubmit .... your cutting into your Profit Margins.... and i dont know anybody at Psa anyways .... atleast your talking about Some Cards that i have let go of like the Kobe Chrome 50th sold it for 900 bought it for 100 in a Kobe Lot... hah sold the Hakeem 86 Fleer Hakeem OLD SGC slab probably sold it for twice as much as i paid for it... but the Rice i have 3 of Stihl.... 2 raw and 1 7.5 from some off grading company. But I Like Iconic Cards but i like Profit more sometimes

I confess that I watched this video once again and I listened to the Disclaimer but even after the Disclaimer this video promotes hate towards the base of the hobby. I just think that this video pushes people away from the hobby even though it's your personal opinion. We viewers come on here to watch fun positive content that helps grow the hobby. There is a place for the points you are trying to make and that place isn't here on Market Movers. I have reached out to others to see if it's just me but there's a rise of concerns over your personal opinions. If you think this type of content helps and you continue to produce such content I'd expect a few less views. I'm one of your biggest fans but I need to help stop you from destroying the PR of the hobby. ~Adam Elf

Right off the bat, not trying to be rude... but didnt you hype up those 2018-19 revolution first laker year cards of lebron? There's a shockingly high amount of them graded and i feel like i remember you being the one to push that. I may be misremembering things. If i am, i'd like to be corrected. But if that is accurate. Dont be a hypocrite on firsts. That is one of if not the worst examples of a first being pumped in the hobby's history. It's pop 19,226 at PSA alone. 14,699 psa 10's. The entire set only has 35,971 cards at PSA. That card is over half of the entire sets pop. Someone hyped it up. That doesnt happen without a serious push from someone with a wide audience. Not many people it could've been. if i'm wrong, then apologies. But if not. You shouldnt backtrack so harshly. Essentially saying you wouldnt even consider buying something you pumped is quite disrespectful to people who look to your insight.

The gam rate for the Derek Jeter might be “one of the worst psa have graded” but only for sports I’m not even sure bc I don’t know that much ab sports cards. But I could name atleast 10 to 15 Pokémon cards (that’s what I collect) that has a worse “gem rate” than the jeter that has a gem rate of 21 to like 600 or whatever.

I think your main point is that grading is a scam. The visual difference in todays grading standards between even a PSA 6 and PSA 10 cannot be seen. Therefore, differences in prices are not justifiable. I think alot of this, too, is a problem with scarcity. Most rookies arent scarce, unless you count the Tiffany sets or some sort of significant misprint/error rookie. Ive argued with people about the SP Jeter rookie not being rare. People are uneducated and do not understand what true scarcity is. A grade will never dictate the price on any truly rare collectible. The PSA pop report is NOT a number or guide of how many actually exist...its only a number of how many they have graded. If grade and low pop truly matter, though, then why isnt a low-grade 1989 UD Griffey rookie selling as high as a PSA10? Theres much less graded in poorer condition, which makes it SUPER RARE!! Try finding one with paper loss!! Now thats EVEN RARER!! All joking aside, this is why I mostly prefer original photos: you have the scarcity and you have an item that nobody else likely owns or has even seen.

I really n I mean really hope fanatics doesn't make the same mistake panini did with all the over production of Rc's and or parallels, sets whatever the case Panini has really dumbed down the hobby single handedly!! They either don't care cuz of the loss with licensing or they thought the 2020 boom would fade into the next several yrs which is so stupid to think that way!! Keep things available to collectors without overprinting and making everything a useless investment!! A happy medium if u will but seems they only go print crazy to satisfy a greed by the owner who bs everyone when he was on SCI for the online card show!!

I will quote Kramer from Seinfeld as to why rookie cards are important to the hobby, “If there are no rules, then you have anarchy!” Rookie cards are important cause it gives collectors/investors a focus. If people in the hobby don’t know what to collect and get frustrated, they will leave. My biggest beef with ultra modern is I don’t know what to collect? There are too many sets, parallels, numbered cards, etc. Because it’s too confusing (along with the risk factor of the high price), I just don’t collect anything ultra modern. Now let’s say the older rookie cards are devalued and some collectors like the 2nd year card, their last card, etc. The hobby turns into anarchy and you risk people leaving. The rookie card gives a footprint that this is the elite card of player X. Now they doesn’t mean you can’t collect Michael Jordan’s 2nd card or Wayne Gretzky’s last card. That’s the beauty of the hobby as everyone should collect what they like. But there has to be some foundation for collectors to follow, and then we can decide what to collect. The Griffey example is the one I use everytime I make this argument.
