I've recently made the decision to switch out of mainline to legends. First reason, you've done so many reviews and have shown me the way, but the second main reason is I was fed up with the mainline for multiple reasons. Those being quality and obtainability. All of the criticism you have are very fair and understandable, but for me, I see them as the pros. Currently having to size down my collection anyway, and I'm not too worried about the display space as I'm constantly messing with them. I think the competition is rather annoying, but it's giving people options because each(while toon accurate) have their own athstetic. It's similar to X Transbots VS Fanstoys. Both are doing G1, but just different enough to still be cool on their own Thanks for reading my Ted talk.
@GibDozer13 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from, but as someone who fairly recently swapped out legends for the mainline let me say this. Don't sell off any of your mainline figures until you've accumulated some legends figures and owned them as a collection for awhile. They are not as good as they look regardless of what legends collectors say. Your mainline figures will retain their value, so if you decide you love legends you're out nothing. However; if you sell of the CHUG stuff to buy a legends collection and decide you don't like them your going to lose about 25-30% at resale(based on my personal experience). Legends looks great posed up, or hanging out in alt mode. I find everything in-between to be a fiddly, frustrating, disappointing mess.

My favorite Sitdown Saturday so far. I just sold off my Masterpiece collection and really went in on Legends scale figures. Not afraid to admit that I got priced out of Masterpiece, especially FansToys. And XTransbots recent failures really pushed me out the door. That being said, I love Legends scale figures. I have a good mix of NewAge, Magic Square, & MFT. I'm blown away by how good they look. That centerpiece that you guys reviewed is so fucking awesome and I'm thinking about doing the same. Space was becoming an issue and that's just another reason for me to get rid of my Masterpiece collection. I do hate how NA & MS are colliding. I wish these companies put out figures by season. I collect action figures (transformable action figures included), that is what I love, if I know and love the character it's even better but as long as the figure appeals to me in some way or I consider it to be a very good action figure I will try to get it. The main issue is that at this time and age there are loads of very good action figures around so it gets a bit hard to choose based only on a "good action figure" criteria, at least when you're not filthy rich. I buy figures by quality, by brand, by fiction, by scale and by the way I want to display them. You can work a shelve or a cabinet with different scales, brands, fictions, qualities, etc as long as you have an idea behind the way you want to display the figures in it and you now how to organize space. Imagine that you have a shelve dedicated to pairs, be it life long enemies, lovers or friends, something like Takara Masterpiece Optimus & Megatron, Bandai Soul of Chogokin Mazinger Z & Minerva X, Storm Collectibles Ken & Ryo, etc. A shelve dedicated to every iteration of Optimus and Megatron, another to all the Autobots, another to all the Decepticons and another to every 4 set of TMNT ever released. What I mean is you can mix in different scales if you have an idea, if that idea is easy to understand just by looking at it and if you know how to organize your space. I collect and display masterpiece, chug and legends scaled TF action figures, the reason why I do is because I love very good action figures and every scale has them.

I completely agree about the logistics of your space at the individual level. The piece I disagree with is comparing displaying legends scale Tformers to small action figures. GI JOEs and Star Wars figs have a problem inherent to most action figures and that's the aesthetic nature of seeing the joints and what not that you can't "hide" like you can on a robot. For example, the Iron Factory Tarn that Bobby shows will (IMO) always display well whereas a random star wars figure or JOE won't. It's the nature of a human action fig vs a robot. Robots just have more options for hiding the so called anatomy limitation that others don't. I do 💯 agree that what you display them in matters a lot though. Putting something small in a detolf requires extra work such as stands or something to help fill the space but I believe that problems exists regardless of scale.

I started collecting almost purely MP, but over the past year or two have switched over mostly to legends. Scale doesn't really matter to me, but I've got limited display space and want to maximise it - a couple of acrylic risers make legends look great in a detolf or similar. But even more than the space issue, I just feel that legends is where the most exciting stuff is happening in the 3P market right now. Legends are now basically mini masterpieces in terms of visual and engineering quality, but more fun to transform, and great to have as deskbots (he says, with Zeta Flash on his desk, who is flipping huge.) Bobby's reasons for not collecting legends are entirely fair and well articulated, but I'd feel like I was missing out on the best transformers has to offer right now if I ignored this area.

Firstly, I just wanted to say love the videos and thanks for doing that for the hobby. The more the merrier. I love your feedback on models etc. I didn't really think your reasoning behind not getting Legends made any sense at all but to each their own. The models simply put are not that small, unless you buy New Age specifically in which case fair enough. If you balance your collection with a bit of this and that it looks totally legit on any shelf. I think, in your case which might alter this, is you need to buy everything or have a completionist mentality and therefore need more space than a regular Joe? In fact, I think MP scale or larger take up way more space and are far more awkward than anything Legends can pump out. I also prefer the war between companies especially with how fun it is with keeping the community interested on different things, for different reasons. It pushes companies to continuously make better products and improve engineering. Man, this is video is very interesting to me, I'm only in the space because of the Legend scale and specifically because of MS and NA. I also, have no problem displaying the models whatsoever, on larger or smaller shelves. Maybe that's coming from someone who's fielded multiple Warhammer armies over decades, I'm not sure. My thoughts on this are simplistic in nature, if you put most of your really well designed models up for less than $50, I become very interested! I'm glad you can still make the videos you do for the Legends community, it's greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Interesting that the price point of legends use to be the allure for most people. However now Magic Square and (more specifically) NewAge are getting more expensive. Not to say it’s a bad thing, but most people nag that 3P MP is “too expensive”. Look at how Magic Square’s Stunticons set is around $280 and NewAge’s Devy set is $400+. It’ll be interesting to see how many people will support MS and NA. I know deep down I’m definitely planning on supporting both companies by picking up double sets (and possibly a third set of MS’s Devy if they do shattered glass Devy). Also, I’m with the majority of people who like their cons and bots bigger. I like my shit big too (so to speak). However, For me, the smaller size lends itself to more playability. I’m more comfortable with playing with a Legends figure than I am with a 3P MP figure. Mostly because I can somewhat easily replace a Legends figure if I break it. Same can’t be said if I break a 3P MP fig. Especially with how the market is with FansToys and just 3P MP in general, I won’t be happy replacing a 3P MP figure

I'mma be honest Legends for me is just "Are these figures in robot mode about the same height? Yes? Good Enough, if they scale to show accuracy by chance, happy little bonus" Combiners, Titans & similar large scale transformers are the psuedo exception. Combiners I'll base on do the individual components fit with the rest of the collection. I honestly haven't look at Titans, City Bots or other large figures yet, but I'd probably want them to be roughly the same size as a "Legends" Titan. But also I'd happily take a Unicron or a Primus with Planet modes that are the same height as say Core Class Soundwave, Starscream & Hot Rod, etc lol

Good discussion and a really interesting and surprising thing for you to mention... That if you had to do it all over again you might consider main-line. Heh, I really can't imagine it for you and your awesome collection/display but currently that's what I'm buying a lot of. (Plus other stuff like MMC for an IDW collection). And as disappointing and imperfect as I find certain chug figures.. I do feel like I might be able to pull something off with displaying them together. I think you said in another video that the imperfections of a lower quality figure can maybe blend in with the crowd. Masterpiece scared me off originally for the price when i started getting in to all this. it seemed outrageous to spend so much.. but as you pointed out once, looking at some of the mainline costs it isn't actually that cheap when you add them all up. But its still more affordable and working with limited space I ended up feeling like MP just would never fit in my home and display properly. Plus.. although not perfect... I get a Runabout and a Runamuck.

Really enjoyed this video - interesting points made... I am a looooong time collector and painter of Citadel / Gamesworkshop miniatures, so to me Legend scale models feel pretty sizeable when it comes to display, so for me Legend scale transformers are neither 'small' or part of a quantity based collection as I feel they stand up as individual bots on display. I love the Legend scale's size / feel and generally find legends just more pleasing to mess around with than either mainline or MP scale models. (Full disclosure - I do collect MP and mainline transformers as well but am increasingly leaning towards legends scale). I guess if you are used to MP scale stuff, Legends seem small and difficult to make an impactful display, but if you are used to working in an even smaller scale, legends are actually pretty big 🙂

As someone that has always loved small toys, I think the legends scale boom has mostly made me more picky. I've seen the New Age and Magic Square stuff and some if it tickles me. But the only ones I end up pulling triggers on are iron factory (and admittedly an old Perfect Effect offerening). The others I ended up buying into are the Mech Fans Toys/VECMA studio legends + scale stuff. But I only just got back into collecting a couple of years ago and my main collection is diaclone reboot stuff. I can say the reason I love the pocket scale toys is for just being able to play with them and have fun without spending a hundred bucks or more. Sure, display can be a problem but you have to get creative. I also think they present a vastly different challenge from the traditional 3.75 action figures. Transformers come in all sorts of heights and sizes while most 3.75 figures are generally uniform in height. That does also lend itself to some scale jank you can use to some advantage here and there as long as it doesn't break your brain.

Look what Takara/Hasbro have done, 3P in particular FansToys has followed lock step in raising the PRICES to unreasonable levels. Sure it's Capitalism but at some point it'll hurt em. IMO it would be far far wiser to ramp up production - not flood the market - keep prices reasonable and everyone WINS!

First off you sir have an amazing collection! Congrats on doing an amazing job displaying them. All my stuff is packed up so I envy you!😂. For me I seem to just enjoy the smaller scale. I feel in love with Mechanic Studios Iron Sky and now I have Poison and Thunderbolt preordered.😁👍

The stoke of seeing new Skullface content, followed by the disappointment that it's another video addressing a topic that anyone without bozo tendencies already knows the answers to because they actually pay attention to what B.S. says in his other videos.

Great topic man, the MS Menasor looks dope butttttt I'd rather have it in MP scale haha.

I only collect legends scaled figures that interest me. If I try and build a legends collection based on the Season 1-3 characters, I'll go broke lol

For the most part, my 3p Legends are just Iron Factory, and I'm a bit selective with them. I do have some New Age, but I just stick with the mini-bots. My plan is to display my legends with city-bots to get as close as I can to the scale. Almost make them the people caught in the middle of a kaiju fight.
@texasbeast2393 жыл бұрын
I would only ever consider Legends scale if I wanted to add Beast Wars characters to be in scale with my MP collection. But I never got into BW as much as TFG1 so I'm not as emotionally attached, and I am very critical of hard plastic limited-articulation representations of soft organic beast bits that don't really cover up robot bits.

Will you buy some WST for your Unicron? I commend you to not get into the Legends Class and would agree that it's a slope. You have many more things you collect, so props that you don't go crazy. Maybe it's time to Upgrade your collection space...to a bigger house...lol.

When I got back into TF collecting back in ‘19 I started with legends scale. After picking up 10 or so figures I was like wtf am I going to do to display these. Sold em and went to MP/3P.
@shaejohnston63393 жыл бұрын
Iron Factory Swerve bar terrarium sounds amazing. I agree that the MS and NA war seems like MP was but on the otherhand they've both announced Menasor and Devastator but while one is releasing one the other is doing the other. I do agree you won't get much outside s1, s2 and the movie though.

Hi, not a native english speaker here. What is this 'd-toff' thing that is not good to display leggends?

Detolf. It's a specific type of IKEA cabinet and one of those things that is almost stereotypical in how often it is poorly used to display collections.

In regards to the OcMax Eris Kultur: All in all I do really like it, but the hands are just not good. One hand the palm popped off and I ended up losing one finger. Thankfully I am being sent another. My thing is I like to see companies try to expand their lines. It is FAR better than just getting constant releases of Seekers, Optimus and Megatron...
@UNICORNxGUNDAM3 жыл бұрын
The wonky face sculpts, the un-unified scale, and the rising cost is kind of a turn off. 20-30 feels fair but most legends coming out now are 45-70. Kills my motivation to ditch the MP line and quickly gather up legends of the characters I have.
@pocketbotcollective3 жыл бұрын
Have to disagree here. The quality just keeps getting better and better. And it's only really one of the legend class companies that offer at that high pricepoint, namely NewAge. For 45 you get a 2-pack from ie MagicSquare. Also depends on where you buy them from of course. Factor in that Hasbro also charges 15 bucks for the Core Class figures, now compare that to the 3P company prices and engineering 😁

I got out of 3P and legends in favor of Siege/ER and I have no regrets. Legends while cool lack the playability of the mainline and the display presence of MP. For me that basically left them with no purpose at all. I do have a few still preforming little tasks, like MS Blaster in his boom box mode who looks good in an MP display imo.
@mikeuziel3 жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed this one. I have a mix of everything, but as time progresses I find I'm mostly into Legends vs MP. I've contemplated moving on from my MP line as well, but the truth is that they DO display better. Legends are just more fun. They're more versatile, the simpler transformations mean I can mess with them back and forth without a tutorial, and Newage in particular has really been killing it. I also love Iron Factory's IDW stuff. In the end, I'm nearly done with MP anyway so Legends will be my future, but I respect your reasons for going the opposite direction.

@chrisandrew98403 жыл бұрын
I don't buy Legends scale because I refuse to spend $30-40 or more for figures of that size. And yeah the mainline stuff improving so much makes me even more hesitant to try Legends. At this point I've narrowed down most of the 84/85 cast in MP scale where I'm satisfied.

The tiny size is why I've never jumped fully into legends, too. I bought several early Magic Square figures, and they just didn't have any display presence, even if they were fun to mess with. That said, if we ever get a good Metroplex and Trypticon, I might become more tempted by legends. You'd have to dedicate a table to a city-mode display, but the sheer rush of childhood wish-fulfillment that would result from setting up a bunch of legends figures around a big citybot might just be worth it. (Hell, if Fans Toys truly does release 3- or 4-foot citybots some day, maybe main-line figures would work, too.)

I think all of your points are 100% valid and logical for your collections, Bobby. And your point about quantity is spot on (how many people will misunderstand that point even after you explained it?) but it's also an appeal to me as I love most of these characters. For me, I only collect two things in any kind of quantity: dinosaurs and Transformers and the deepest I've truly gotten into 3rd party before committing to Legends-scale is being a fan of MMC. So it was easy for me to go in. Add in that I'm not a big "leave it on the shelf for months" guy, I take them down, play, pose, and photo them. At the end of the day most of what we collect are toys and you're damn right I'm gonna play with them some 🤣 Great video Bobby.

I get you 100%. Reviewing figures that you don’t want helps people decide if they want it. Collecting is a personal thing. With Legends I gave up collecting as I like detailed pieces and bots that bring back memories. Seriously thinking about coming away from 3rd party Transformers. I just want Fanstoys Skullcruncher as it’s my holy grail figure and Maketoys Galvatron. The prices are just getting daft. I really like 52 Toys and I feel like I can share with my kids. Shared as always in my Facebook group TF3PUK. Thanks for doing what you are doing. 🇬🇧❤️

Eris and figures of that sort, MMC can do this right, unlike Maketoys CD. Make the design fit in aesthetically with mainstream characters. Does Eris LOOK like she could pop up in the pages of IDW and look like she belongs? Yes. The second part to succeeding, give the character a story. Tie it in somehow. Eris was given a backstory and personality IIRC. A good one. Finally, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Don’t be a Maketoys. Don’t make OC’s your bread and butter or the sole sector where your passion lays. Just my thoughts.

Totally agree with you on the things you shared about legend class TFs. I'm one of them who have been collecting since got the taste from Iron Factory. Have bought other brands to compare them myself in terms of playability and quality of the build. Thank you for the warning on the detolf !
@GibDozer13 жыл бұрын
I got out of legends because while they have great articulation they lack poseability, and while they have interesting transformations they lack playability. I have my MPs for display but I changed up to the mainline from 3P and legends for my toy fix. In terms of a Transformer to play around with i.e. flip back and forth, pose, customize, ect...Hasbro has smashed its competition imho.
