I collect both. I started with MP since they were the adult realization of the characters I grew up with. Legends gives me more options, especially NewAge with the various repaints, a way to display alt-modes without taking up alot of space (and saving money) and they are generally more fun to causally play with.

The problem is NOT running out of chracters.....the REAL problem (and this affects ALL scales) is the SAME characters being done countless times over and over again while ignoring characters that CAN be done to the piont its no longer "market choice" but "market saruration".....as an example how many mp G1 megatrons have there been?.....including the monstrosity that was original mp megs we have had 5....thats more than enough and "market choice" but how many G1 mp primes has there been?....i have lost count as this stage that the mp optimus situation is "market saturation" and it can be likened to waiting for a bus....you waot a long time and 2 or 3 buses come at once...you wait a long time for a new mp prime and then 3 or 4 companies bring out their own versions at the same time.

@@JalilPrime yeah I don't know why Takara doesn't do jazz or mirage in MP. They've been done in every other line. I personally don't think legends has that much impact on MP. I have both, though I'm not crazy into legend like I was MP. Might be because I DID go all in on MP because I imagine if I started now and not a decade ago the quantities I have of each would be reversed.

I gotta agree with Ms skullface and jist that the reason i cant get into legends is because they look like toys. I still like the idea of a premium looking figure and yes i know they are still toys but i just like the presence of the mp figures.

What i believe is that we dont want to spend an hour transforming a figure under 5 to 10 minutes is more ideal. With most mps we spend 150 and up and we break that in 2 minutes it just kills ur happiness in what you buy. At least thats my case.

As a mainly a CHUG collector transitioning to a Legends scale. I have like 4 MP scale figures, I don't collect them because of the price. The size and lack of space can be worked around. Who wouldn't want MP scale figs over any other IMO, same as Hot Toys, If I could afford them like I can legends I'd go that route. On the other hand MP availability is not there. I just checked BBTS and Show Z, you cant even get a G1 MP scale Megs. So I think MP scale is shooting themselves in the foot because of the pricing and lack of figures, its hard for a newbie to jump in if you cant get the core figures. If they lowered the prices, maybe they would become more appealing, but like I said, if you cant even get the core figures, why even bother starting.

I ordered the 2023 version from Magic Square and the decals. I'm going to give it a try, but for now, I think I did well, especially for the price point, which was $67 USD + shipping. I would have never been able to purchase into the toy genre without Legends scale. I've also tried to focus mostly on Magic Square unless it's a select model/models. My goal is to try and collect the seasons, but I'll see where I end up. My budgets are small but consistent, so I'm hoping all goes best. I wanted to say I couldn't do any of this without videos like this vs. Videos, qc videos, and so on. It's really a great community to help anyone get into the community. And I'd like to thank all of you for this help, it's greatly appreciated.

10:20 Doing both, and I can definitely agree here that for MP, especially FT there's tons of pieces that are way too bloated on aftermarket to easily go after at this point. The FT Dinobots easily run like a grand minimum for a set, for example. Meanwhile I started Newage collecting like, 1-1.5 years ago and I'm already essentially caught up almost entirely without paying aftermarket prices.

I think there really isn't a single reason to this, but multiple variables that increased legends popularity... The biggest issue for MPs is the constant price increase. It was already slowly pricing out collectors but until shit hit the fan and cost of living skyrocketed, this wasn't as obvious. In the meantime, Legends scale figures really made huge leap in terms of design and quality, but what I think was instrumental is a popularity of toon accuracy. With design of MP figures being simplified to meet the toon accuracy demand, gap in the looks department between MPs and Legends basically disappeared in some cases, where it is really hard to say if you are looking at the picture of MP or Legends scale figure, unless you have something for the size reference. This, combined with lower price point (in times of financial instability) is what made the Legends much more appealing to collectors, old and new, and is causing MPs to loose their foothold. For me personally, it is crazy what some of these Legends scale figures go for, and there is no way you can make me believe NA Ymir is worth $115 (regardless of how much I love Grimlock! :D ), specially when StarToys Blitzwing is being sold for what, $10 more? And it's a damn triple-changer with much more complex transformation! :D But I do get it, as if I was thinking about getting into collecting now, I don't think I would consider MPs as an option... They are simply getting too expensive and you really need to plan the display space in advance, as they require a lot of it, unless you plan to stick to few specific characters... Good thing is I started collecting few years ago, as no matter how good legends figures become, legends display will never look impressive as MP display. ;)

Two reasons 1) LEGENDS are much smaller, and therefore take up less space, and can have BIGGER Dioramas 2) COST far less, although that has changed over time, and the selection is excellent I'll give you a PRIME Example, I was against NEWAGE Omega Supreme, $170+ Price Point, especially when compared to DX9 Gabriel, could have gotten him for the same price. However, when compared to the PRICE POINT of Takara Tomy or 3P Masterpiece scaled Characters, he comes in cheaper than most these days, while being 11 inches tall, and heavier than say a MP52 which is $230+ and 10 inches.

I have come full circle on this: I started collecting CHUG (I think of everything pre WfC as a sort of "CHUG v1.0" - cars at roughly 1:32 scale; modernised reinterpretations; most characters done at deluxe class making it not very scale conscious). I didn't stop collecting CHUG 1.0 but it stopped. When it stopped, it was largely "complete" to some extent. I bought most MPs as one-off statement pieces. I consider MP to have transitioned from one-offs to a collectible line with the release of MP Lambor but I did not _collect_ it at this point. I thought Lambor was too expensive, not a good design and that it was unreasonable to expect them to do all the car robots in MP. MP Streak was too good to pass on, though, and much more reasonably priced - I allowed myself to get my favourite colouration of each mould to enjoy the line alongside my main CHUG collection (a behaviour I would briefly repeat with Newage's diaclone repaint legends). As it started to look more achieveable to complete an MP lineup, I allowed myself to pick up mostly 3P representations of the repaint characters I had missed out on and allowed MP to overtake CHUG 1.0 as being viewed as my main collection. I stopped collecting MP because I became undermotivated by the combination of the change in style meaning they didn't feel like one big consistent collection anymore coupled with the do-overs of characters before completing one pass-through of each making me despair of ever completing the collection. I picked up the best 3P representations of the remaining '84 and '85 gaps in my collection and gave up on TF:TM era and beyond and BW at MP scale. I would question anyone considering MP to be complete, even now, over a decade after it began. At this point, I was buying very little CHUG as it was largely "done" but I had discovered legends - specifically, cheap, fun products like Hot Soldiers or Newage's Flipper. I think I will always enjoy buying Transformers and legends came out at a time when I was buying very little and interested in picking up cool things. I fell in and out of collecting legends very quickly, though - MS stalled on car robots to directly rival Newage's releases and I had too many QC issues; I found they lost their charm when they quickly transferred from being cute, fun ideas to implement in small scale to the "mini-masterpiece" style (and corresponding higher price point). But mostly I stopped because of what I call "CHUG 2.0"... ...WfC brought a new CHUG scale (approx 1:36 cars; many characters implemented in voyager class to be more scale appropriate) and Earthrise brought a new style (not particularly reimagined; "G1 enough") - beating legends on size and value and beating MP on price and the prospects of completion. Micromaster casettes proved to me that MP scale was not needed (I had previously thought MP Soundwave could not be done at CHUG scale, necessitating MP to get a complete G1 lineup) In short, for me: MP did not affect CHUG 1.0 (it died off on its own); legends did not affect MP (I gave up on MP independently of its existence and only briefly held thoughts of it replacing the function of my MP collection); CHUG 2.0 absolutely did kill off legends and would easily have killed off MP had it not already died. With 20:20 hindsight, I would never have bought a single MP or legends release.

Excellent conversation. I think the issue is the price, Newage stepped up and is providing the toon accurate look for a lower price . The lack of variety also has an impact on the MP collector where legends collectors have repaints and ( God bless Iron Factory) stylized designs that keep the genre fresh.

Hi Bobby. It's Don. Do you and the others think perhaps innovation in transformation we see at the Legends scale could be a small part of the migration from MP to Legends? I feel many collectors will buy a figure either in a line or scale they don't normally if the transformation has that certain 'holy crap how did they get it to do THAT?!' moment that feels like real innovation that MP seems to lack a lot of the time. A lot of times we see innovation in Legends scale that would either be compromised at MP or would make it so complex it would circle back to the frustrating aspect causing the move. I.E. imagine if New Age Jetfire's arm rotation into the can of peas was implemented on MP Skyfire. I honestly can't see that working, or being horribly frustrating and/or add more $$ to the final cost. Just a thought I had. Great video and discussion!

Over the last few years my financial burdens have shifted (kid, mortgage, single income household) so I’ve stepped back from the increasingly more expensive MP scale stuff and have gone with Legends, New Age specifically, instead. I also like to keep a bunch of them on my desk to fiddle with while I’m working, and Legends scale is just far more tinkerable, which ups the value for me, personally.

I thin another reason people go to Legends is that they have the benefit of being newer toys compared to MP options, so there's the benefit of being able to take from countless prior versions to make a better looking version(at least in terms of proportions and aesthetics) in Legends scale. Like how before DS/Takara 3.0, the best Seekers were probably New Age's. That said, the scale isn't for me. The size just feels more like "desktop trinket" than a display piece. I'm sure you can make a great Legends display, but my other non TF figures are so different from that scale it would mean a bigger overhaul than sticking with MP.

I collect from the main line (my focus), MP, and legends scales, official and non, although I tried not to fall too-deeply down the legends rabbit hole. Thus far, I've managed great restraint although the options are always greatly tempting. From that perspective, had I the foresight to see how legends would evolve into what it offers today, I would have, with a couple exceptions, eschewed MP altogether in lieu of a more complete legends scale collection. In my case as a 51 year-old collector in good financial standing, space is more the issue, as I'm also a lifelong LEGO collector with a rather voluminous collection which makes space in my ever-shrinking house a rare commodity. To the point, I think the quality of legends, subjectively, is nigh on par with MP in terms of engineering and in capturing the look of both the alts and bot modes of the G1 characters with full articulation to boot. In some cases, like Magic Square's Ironhide/Ratchet and Megatron or New Age's Seekers, the legends figs are superior to the MP offerings, IMHO. Moreover, unfettered by the need for licenses, third parties can and do produce a more complete roster of characters than has been possible in the official MP line which makes for a more appealing option overall. Granted, third parties are also producing unlicensed figs to fill the roster (looking at you Fans Toys Jive as you guard my kitchen table), but the differences in price and space between those size classes can cement the decision to go all-in on legends to someone with both limited finances and space. I enjoy my eclectic all-size-class collection, but if I had to start over, with a few exceptions (especially my beloved MP Prowl for whom I would have waited an eternity), I think I would skip MP and just collect main line and legends.

I started collecting Transformers again this year and went with Legends for several reasons. First was cost, second was I wanted figures that looked like the cartoon. So Hasbro wasn't and isn't doing this, MP are just too pricey, and that led me to Legends. Also, the bigger bots scale better. So, the combiners I have look great and aren't bulky since they are smaller and still fit on most shelves. I do love some of the MP figures though, and I do plan on buying all the Fans Hobby Godmaster figures as I don't see those ever coming to Legends scale. I'd be lying too if I didn't twice a week feel like putting all my Legends on Ebay and just start buying MPs, but the cost would be insane to do that and I did buy two MP figures just to see how they felt, and while they look great, so there are so large they just cannot get into the poses my Legends can. At this point I am glad Legends is doing well and I hope it grows, but I will always be a bit jealous of some MP figures. Oh yea, and if you buy directly from Magic Square their prices are much better, but by now most of the good figures are long gone sadly, but for anything new it's always cheaper than anywhere else.

Great discussion. I am 'relatively' new to collecting TFs (less than 2 years) so still have plenty of MP and Legends options to go for. My take is that it is mainly about having a wider choice. Given that there is only so much money that anyone can justify spending on collecting, every £/$/€ spent on legends is a £/$/€ not spent on MP. It's not that one is better than the other, rather the same cash can't be spent on both. More choice means that both lines of figures face stiffer competition for the same pot of money.

I started collecting mainline when Siege was ending and Earthrise started popping up. I looked at MP, but never bothered because of the price. When I saw Newage figures, I thought they looked more cartoon accurate than mainline, we’re made of higher quality materials, took up less shelf space and looked like they they had fun transformations that were complex, but not crazy lie MP. Excellent points made, though there's a lot of room for nuance as well (which perhaps you get into on the Patreon). Like, cost is definitely a factor. But it's not just, "Do I want to pay less for Optimus and Megatron and the other A-listers". It's also that, disposable income be damned, I wouldn't pay $150-200 for an Armada homage, or a character from the Marvel comics, or a yellow-and-green Seeker repaint who never appeared anywhere. But for $60, I might consider it. They're back on the menu, at least. And stuff beyond the cartoon like that helps make the "world" of my collection feel fuller. Same with the space factor. Sure, it's nice to be able to get your whole collection on fewer shelves. But the nicer selling point is being able to spread them out and really get some good battle posing going on. Exploit the wide variety in scales from combiners to Omega Supreme to Scorponok. Try things I wouldn't try with the heavier MPs, like getting all the Dinobots and Devastator onto the same shelf, or having some Autobots sitting on the back of Sky Lynx, etc.

After a few, I bought more to scratch that itch of getting something new every 2 weeks. Yes Legends are Cheaper, but as an MP Collector, money isnt an issue and I excused the lack of detail and hardware expected from MPs. One point about CHUG 3rd party decline you missed is that Hasbro stepped up their game and started hitting all of the characters that were missing along with improving their designs (until the hollowness years :). CHUG has been the main line focus for years and years now and at the cheaper price point, Hasbro successfully took back the market and crushed the 3rd party competition. Questions of quality aside, there isn't room for expensive 3rd party any more. Now the 3rd party CHUG releases are all add-on packs that fill holes in the hollowness or add accessories. That market is actually thriving today. Inexpensive and adds value to the main line release.

Also, the space issue is huge. Paying 150 to 300 for figures I struggle to find space for vs. 70 to 200 for figures I can always find space for, or literally just have on my lap. If I have an MP out that I'm messing with and one of the dogs runs over, that's a potential disaster. If it's a legends, I can just grab it all up. Even with the price increasing, it's like you're paying for the option to display without MORE expense, whereas MP has "hidden" costs in time, space, etc.

I do disagree that Chug has faded at least in the last few years. Chug has given people a decent collection that scales with each other. However most of the characters have been done and I do think it has faded within the last six months. Overall I believe most collectors would continue buying MP if the economy was doing better and there was more competition within the MP space. Fans Toys has extremely high prices with the best quality. I don't think most people can justify the prices right now, considering the world right now. People have to think about how to prepare for and survive a a possible WWIII.

I started collecting when I was 39 after a house fire took out my very small collection of childhood toys. The last 9 years have allowed me to build up a decent collection consisting of a full set of season 1 bots as well as a mostly complete movie collection with a few extra bots that matter from season 2. I think that for the most part I am done now and will only be upgrading if something is compelling and adding if something exceptional comes out. If I were starting today I would go to legends for the availability, but considering how good mainline has been since earthrise I think high end collection is a tough sell to new collectors. If Hasbro could figure out distribution and fins a way for new collectors to get in and easily buy their favourite characters they could own the market of new collectors moving forward. Sadly they refuse to. Imagine if Hasbro sold a $1000 started kit that included 18 of the best earthrise and studio series 86 bots? have it come in 3 large collector packages and allow new collectors to jump in and scratch that itch all at once. Maybe legends needs to do that.

I think MP is definitely doing itself a disservice by not being as prolific as legends right now. Sure, you can argue a lot of legends releases at the moment are repaints, but I think it's more about promising and not delivering. Countless FT and XTB figures have been promised and, although XTB appears to be getting through some of their backlog, little has been seen on figures that excite collectors like Fort Max, Menasor, or Galvatron. From an objective standpoint, in terms of completion, a legends collection will be completed far faster than an MP collection. Not only are they more prolific, they are more readily available since a lot of good MP figures are older and more rare. I'm still going to stick with MP since the price of modern legends is too close to MP to justify the size difference. Just look at Newage vs DX9 omega. $100 more expensive for a toy that's half the size. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing, but I'm not forking out that much when I can get something MP scaled cheaper. What I would love to see is more companies jumping into MP. We've seen a little with TE/DS/ST(?) and Magic Square's OP gave MP-44 a run for its money. If we could see more upscaling like that, maybe the competition would whip the older companies into shape.

Pricing is what would push me out of MP collecting. When MP car bots were 60, Kos were 30, and legends were 30, there was no desire for legends since the official was reasonable and kos were the same price as legends. Now that car bot are 100-150, im getting priced out of MP, but I wont go to legends because i think theyve gotten overpriced too. I'll just stop collecting and switch to gi joe classified or some other toy line.

I was only collecting MP but then MP Bumblebee 2.0 came out and MP Optimus 3.0… they are way too complicated and expensive for what they are. So I began selling my MP collection. Then I bought a Newage Soundwave because I liked what I saw and they are like MP10. Die cast, material feels amazing, simple transformation juste complex enough and they are close enough to G1 esthetic. I want to tranform my collection without it taking half a day, having sore fingers and a 15 pages instruction. I also have a few chug that I love.

Between all the third party companies helping me fill gaps in my MP collection Im actually left with the option to settle and stop collecting MPs, replace my old MPs with better newer versions or move on to other brands like GIJOE. I look at Legends but they are not for me. I also feel they are gimmicky like WST were. Not gonna lie though. They look awesome, but I will NEVER fork over $50+ for a Legends figure. Great topic Bobby

Legends are just to small and fiddly to transform to me so the only reason I can see for me to buy them is maybe for combiners or characters not made in mp scale. MP looks the best, but is getting too expensive and sometimes too ridiculous to transform. Mainline is the sweet spot on size for transforming in my opinion but then we know the quality and how they look can be hit or miss. As far as MP prices if 3rd party companies like TE and DS can keep springing up and giving us the characters we need to finish things out at around $100-120 a bot that would be great.

MMC,Planet X,Warbotron,Generation Toys I like the stylized IDW look..if I want Toon accurate MP I stick with Takara..most of my purchases of late are Iron Factory especially the Iron Samurai line..and Newage..been a collector since G1..and and now I'm in my 40s I have a substantial collection of over 400 bots..more selective and really have to want the figure..pretty much stopped collecting mainline...and I can get 2-3 high quality legends scale for the price of 1 FT..space is also an issue and generally find Toon accurate sterile and boring looking..

Legends make more sense to SELL. You might sell each unit for half the price of an MP scaled figure but the cost of shipping per unit is WAY lower. If I were starting today I'd probably go Legends, but by the time the Legends really became miniature MPs I already was super invested in my MP collection. I DO think that Legends and MP are somewhat of an either/or proposition. It's just too expensive to collect both of them. There's one completely subjective thing that bothers me though: _value._ Newage Tyr, for example, is about half the price of FansToys Quietus but is nowhere near half the _toy._

Not for nothing; I don’t collect legends because I can’t afford masterpiece. I collect legends because at that scale the G1 aesthetic looks appropriate and charming whereas at the MP scale I find G1 looks cheezy and cheap. Furthermore a legends display hides a lot of flaws in the figures simply because they’re smaller which serves the overall display better. Not to mention a legends display takes up significantly less space than an MP collection. The price tag doesn’t really enter into it for me

I very much prefer legends over MP’s. The few MP’s in my collection are just ones of my favourite characters, and I have legends of those characters as well. Space and money do play a part in it but overall I find legends more enjoyable. A lot of times I can pull off displays and actions I could not pull off easily with MP’s e.g. I have legends figures carrying each other and other dynamic actions that would be near impossible with MP’s without the assistance of stands or some other apparatus. And companies like Newage or Magic Square can create engineering I think - while not yet on the level of MP’s - isn’t far off it.

I started with MPs, and got into legends out of boredom (lack of MP releases gave me too much free time and money 😂.) I wouldn’t sell my MP collection for Legends, as of this moment they are serving as accent pieces for my combiner dioramas. It does seem like Legends is stalling in the same ways MP has been, and because they were so prolific they might burn out faster

I've sold all my MP but GigaPower Dinobots, MMC Skylynx and FT Omega Supreme. All the rest gone or actively selling. I've gone balls deep into Legends, mainly NewAge. Though I buy the MagicSquare combiners and a few IronFactory. The reason I got out of MP was 1) Overly toon aesthetic. Toon looks cheap, low quality, and ugly to me and the large scale move from traditional MP to toon was a huge blow to my collecting. Some (Many?) of the toon fans in the MP community are toon zealots and don't allow room for different aethetics 2) Space. MP takes up too much space for 40 bots. Need a few bookshelves, but legends are nice and compact 3) Availability. There was a period a couple years ago when FT was selling out 5 minutes into preorder. It was really annoying and that's when I gave up on MP. It hadn't been fun for a year and it became too much work. 4) Legends are more fun. Straight up. MP takes itself too seriously nowadays, legends know they are toys

I have to say it's had an effect on me because when I bought new age legends scale jet fire it was literally a miniature version of phoenix in my mind. And i'm not gonna lie it almost turned me into a legend's collector. The new age grimlock also tried to do the same thing to me. But I just can't get past the fact that they just feel like a gimmick to me. I guess they're great if you don't have the room for a upscale collection. But I'll make my wife sleep in the car before i sacrifice room for my upscale collection. I think if my wife told me to stop collecting G1 and masterpiece, and switch to legends, I would probably divorce her.

There is always chug and a lower price point. MP costs too much. If I didn’t get into legends, it probably would have been something else at a similar price point. Maybe figures, maybe not. I have money to spend responsibly. But 200 for one figure is too much. 4 k for a couple Shelves is ridiculous. I could restore an entire car for that. I could buy a motorcycle maybe or dam close. MP did this to itself.

Mp have gotten too expensive and are not masterpiece enough. Legends are also too expensive now, and it escalated quickly. But they're more active, more creative, and still more affordable. Cutesy hyper toon accuracy killed mp, because they are constrained in how masterpiece a design can really be.

For me, I can afford any of it. What makes me collect legends more than MP, is MP stopped being MP. Their designs are not as clean, less and less diecast, articulation is lacking, no rubber tires on anything official. Really, MP is just over sized classics. Legends are designed better, better articulation and these fuckers are starting to come with rubber tires. And Magic Squares Motormaster is 100% better than Fanstoys Motormaster...and guess what, it's better articulated and Magic Square completed the combiner. Magic Squares legends Prime is better than Hasbros Prime. You can objectively disagree, but you know it's true. As long as MP has typewriter hands and plastic wheels, legends win out. We are not getting the quality for the price.
