I think this is the first video you've made where I mostly disagree with you. Some people need a perceived external change to knock them out of a bad habit/routine or into a good one. Sometimes that change is a pandemic, other times it's just the start of a new year. For a lot of people, I think New Year's represents a cue to look back on what they've been doing and how they're going to improve it (hopefully within their own definition of "improve," and not someone else's). Even the people who want to plaster their New Year's Resolutions all over social media have something to gain from doing so. A lot of those people are very insecure, as you astutely pointed out. They're pretty beholden to what they think other people think of them. So, by putting their resolutions out there for their friends and followers to see, they're creating a consequence for themselves if they don't follow through with their resolution(s): the judgement of their social media following. All I'm saying is, I don't think New Year's Resolutions are stupid or particularly woo-woo. The new year represents a sort of wake-up call for a lot of people who are hypnotized by the exhausting slog of day-to-day existence. I think we should encourage people who make New Year's Resolutions. Of course, I do agree that a New Year's Resolution is incredibly stupid if you don't follow through with it. I think it's easy to be dismissive of New Year's Resolutions when you observe the staggering number of people out there who have no follow-through. Just my unsolicited two cents.
@seltzermint510 ай бұрын
I feel pretty similarly to this as well. I think for SOME people, it's the perfect time to make positive changes with a "new" year and the stressful, hectic holidays over. But I also think the number of people who just make NYR because it's "what you do" is a much higher number and therefore less likely to actually result in positive change.

I expect plans and good habits to fall apart as the year progresses, so I like the psychological aspect of the New Year as a kind of reset (I gotta go with whatever motivation works for my brain). I spend the first half of January figuring out plans for my goals, then in the second half, I do a 'warm up' to the new habits--this lets me figure out what works, what doesn't, and what I need to tweak. Then, start of February, I hit the 'hard reset' and spend at least four weeks going hard on good habits and breaking bad ones, and it's quite effective. I try to keep going until Easter, but if I'm starting to crack, I'll go back to a milder 'holding position' (rather than crashing back into terrible habits) as a break. Sometimes I'll find other dates in the year to do this cycle again, just as a healthy reset: plan, warm up, hard reset, then back to 'holding pattern'. It's important to figure out what works for your own psychology. And I agree that to be properly motivated, it has to be something that matters enough to you. If you're on board with the 'why', it's easier to keep going. Maybe the most important aspect for me is to understand that my plans WILL FALL APART at some point; it's a case of just going for as long as I can, then taking a break from it, then warming up and doing it again. No guilt, no failure, just being human, and still making progress. I've done this cycle multiple times and it works for me.

It took me a very long time to understand that other people don't need to know what my goals are. In the past when I talked about my goals, most people would explain to me why I was going to fail as you mentioned and it WAS extremely discouraging and in many cases, yeah, I gave up. At the "ripe" age of 37 I just keep my head down and keep to my small circle of friends/family; those who actually wish for me to succeed. This shift has included getting off of social media platforms because I now realize I prefer my privacy. Thanks for making this video...I think so many people need to hear this message.

I love this particular subject BIG TIME and I've been saying this my entire life even when I was a young teenager. Like you, I simply see an issue or situation I feel I need to change, I just set my mind to it and do it. I make a list of things I see that needs to be done every week. I look at the list every day and attempt to get 3 of the most important things on the list each day and I'm satisfied if I get one done. That's a pretty simple system as most of us including myself usually line up more tasks than can be accomplished in one day. Of course there are some things on the list I'm aware will take at least a week, but yeah, those are pretty obvious. Thanks for this one. I love your channel and I'm glad I stumbled on it. Your delivery is great

I can’t rely on this new year resolutions thing. I get kinda paralyzed (as in can’t continue) when I make huge changes since I’m autistic. So I’m always doing small changes to get closer to whatever I want to achieve. It’s less overwhelming and let’s you build the kind of habit that if you miss one day or even a week because you got sick or anything, it’s fine, you just continue as soon as you recovered ☺️

If you are going to set new year's resolutions, it also makes sense to evaluate the progress of your life over the past year, reflect on whether you accomplished your goals, and if not, what went wrong, and adjust your approach for the next year. If you approach them this way, I think new year's resolutions can actually work well, as an addition to living intentionally and setting new goals whenever it makes sense to.

The time off over Christmas and New Year's has given us time to stop and reflect over the previous year. It has made me realise two specific things I am going to change in 2024. You must’ve been reading my mind, because most things that you’ve pointed out in this video are often the same reasons why in the past several years I have been skeptical of New Years Resolutions. Mainly I’ve had a few of those myself before and they never work out, but the main reason I don’t set them is because I think that we shouldn’t have to wait till the first day of the year to say we’re going to start changing things. I think changing things is something that often happens gradually in our lives and improving our self is something we should strive regardless of what day of the year it is.

But I did do some of the things I needed to do. I yo-yo dieted, started a skin care routine and worked on my business. But nothing much in the way of success happened for me. I'm fatter than ever at this point and my business is months from launching. At the end of this year I tried to get back to it but I kept failing. I ate healthy food for a few days before calling for the pizza delivery man again. It kept happening week after week. I had no intention of waiting for new years but when it was a few weeks away I thought to hell with it, I'll try anything at this point. January 1st is a MONDAY this year!! That's all I need...I hope.
