Why I don't mosh anymore

I've only moshed once and it was a Slayer concert few weeks ago (I'm still basically a kid and there are not many metal concerts where i am) and at one point i slipped on beer or sweat or whatever and started falling, but people in the pit realized it before me and picked me up before i managed to fall down... that's one of the things i like about metal... that sounds really cheesy but it's how it fucking is.

At one concert i went to a girl was picked up by some big dude picked her up and slammed her into the ground. That's not moshing thats just violent shit. I too stay out of mosh pits for reasons like that. Being a decent size dude, i still don't wanna get thrown on my ass. I have noticed that at death/thrash/black metal concerts moshpits are still good - we just bash into each other, if anyone falls down, we pick him up, girls are protected and don't get tossed around and if you don't want to participate, thats fine. But at hardcore/metalcore concerts its different - there's almost alway the arrogant douchebags throwing their arms and legs around, sometimes real aggression and generally a somewhat lack of respect towards others. I don't know, I guess the edgy teens need to vent their anger litterally while the "real" metalheads are civilized and friendly

I go in the pit, I like karate in the pit in slam/Deathcore/goregrind concerts, but in my town, when we do that, we have respects for each others, we protect the people who are next to us of someone tries to crowdkilling, and if someone fall into the pit, or get injured, we help him and look if he's alright. And all that, no matter of the gender, the weight, the height and all that! (Sorry if I did some mistakes when I wrote, I live in Belgium so my native language is french)

French metalhead here. I mosh a lot and so far I've seen some people randomly throwing arms and legs in the air. It's a little dangerous but if you spot the guy you can deal with it. Also I've seen people pushing realy hard but nether seen punches or kicks. And I've been through some serious wall of death. What surprised me when I started is how helpful people are in the pit. There is some realy clear rules that you understand imediately. -Pick up the guy who falls -Don't be hard on the small or week ones -Protect the guy who tie his shoe -Have fun Sunday I was at the Hellfest the french biggest Metal festival. At Slayer I saw realy old guy who walk with a cane. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOSH PIT ! And it was all right ! The crowd was dense as fuck, the mosh pit tough as hell and we manage to free some space to do not hurt the granpa. I was amaze that was just possible !

+NightWolf The only one who comes from a rap background is their DJ. The rest of them have metal, rock, or classic rock backgrounds. Slipknot helped introduce me to the world of extreme metal. I can't say I'm a die hard fan anymore, but I still got a soft heart for them. Also, they didn't have the douchebags this guy is talking about at their shows. It's always good, clean, respectable moshing. I've never had a problem at a Slipknot concert, unless one of the supporting bands brought those douchebag fans to the show.

you're very mistaken. Slipknot have stated their lyrics are from the hate and anger they had. That's pretty fuckin' metal. The only thing "rap" about them, is the fast lyrics, (which isn't confined to rap anyways, lots of good metal bands do that I.E Archspire, which is even faster) and the turn tables.

If you're scared going alone and moshing. at least go and get near a pit. Just to get use to it.(it'll look scary from the outside) The first few concerts I went to as a teen I went alone. Once you're in the pit tho, it's really easy to just have fun, most people are really friendly and will hype you up. And before you know it you'll just be going insane bumping shoulders and letting the music flow through you xD \m/

You could start with some easier pogo style pits. If you do a bit of research, forums and people can help you find bands to start with. As you build experience in what's cool and manageable, you can work your way up to where you want to be (and where you want to stay clear of..) One of my mosh-fraidy exes once joined me on the tunes of Finntroll and had a great time. She was more of a hippy and in no ways metal. There is something out there for everyone but it will take a bit of effort to reach it.

when it comes to moshing, there is a time and place. moshing at bands like slipknot, motorhead, slayer, anthrax, municipal waste(great thrash band btw)etc. is fine as long as it doesn't turn into unnecessary violence. however in bands like foo fighters, rolling stones, rhcp, sonic youth, green day etc. i think moshing is totally uncalled for. yes i love all these bands and more, i don't limit myself to one genre of music

My first concert was with my brother, and he told me some rules on how to mosh. He said don’t ever lift your knees, because you’ll hit someone in the balls. Don’t extend your hands, always have your arms tucked to your side that way you can just make contact with your shoulders. And also, if people fall, help them up.

last concert i went to was the summer slaughter tour in 2015. cattle decapitation was on stage. some 300+ pound guy tackled me headfirst into my knee. im a skinny guy 140 pounds. tore completely through my MCL and a partial tear of my meniscus. not sure if he did it on purpose because he knocked himslef out and i never talked to him. other guys there pulled me out, but they couldnt move him, i think because i never saw him again. had to sit out the rest of the show and go to the ER after. missed a month of work because i couldnt walk. now i dont want to go to another show because i no longer have health insurance anyway once i get my shit together and get insurance again i will probably also avoid the pit now. was my favorite part, but its just not worth it

Once i were on Frontside gig when one dude were just punching and kicking everyone. 5 minutes later i saw him all covered in blood laying in the centre of mosh, that's how it works in Poland. Been in pits with anthrax, lamb of god, slayer, testament, really recently, they were all aggressive fun pits, but no one was throwing punches or fighting, for the most part every pit ive been in has has a bunch of great metalheads just having a fun time

My sister and I went to our first concert featuring Korn, Breaking Benjamin, Motionless In White, and Silversnakes. Korn was the last to go up but sadly my sister couldn't really see them like I was able to because her glasses got broken due to people in the mosh pit. Some might argue that we shouldn't have been there with glasses in the first place, but I just didn't think we would get bumped into. That's why we couldn't enjoy Korn how we wanted to because we had to watch out for retarded people who got a little too violent. We still enjoyed the concert, though!

From my experience the heavier the subgenre the more violent the pit. I went to see Municipal Waste and Havok this weekend at Download Festival and their pits were great. I passed by some grind and core bands and those pits were horrible.

I only go to small metal and punk concerts from (usually) local bands. I love that because I always go to the same 2 venues and meet the same people there. Every time I go into the pit. I love moshing. The pits are always great and I usually mosh with friends and people I've seen there before. When someone falls we pick them up. Everyone's respectful and just having a good time. The pits are not that big and I love that because you can get out whenever you want.

I used to mosh a lot when I was younger and even though there was the occasional hardcore "dance" pit, everyone was still respectful of personal space and tried to make it a safe environment. I've always really enjoyed the respect that was present in the few metal concerts I've attended. One time, when I was still in high school, a couple friends of mine took me along to a Bring Me The Horizon concert and we were in the front of the crowd, messing around a little, and around us a moshpit broke out, cause I guess we kinda initiated it. I somehow ended up in the middle, confused and desoriented and since I can't keep balance for shit, I eventually fall to the ground, and I was initially kinda scared of getting trampled. The second I looked up, I remember like six or seven different people had stopped around me, were keeping the guys away and were offering to help me back up. Honestly, I've never felt so safe and respected in my life. I don't think I'll ever forget that. I usually steer clear of any type of moshpit in the first place because I'm really small and shoulder height for most people is tooth height for me, so I feel like if I get into a moshpit I'm kinda asking for it :P but this will always be how I remember metal concerts and how I think they should be.

If you go see any deathcore band the pit will be full of hardcore dancers, I've seen BTBAM four times now and I have not experienced a single hardcore dancer in the pit. Even when they played with ABR, everyone was just slam dancing, it was awesome! However, I went and saw suicide silence (mainly cause ASP is one of my favorite bands and I wanted to see Eddie live) and it was noting BUT hard core dancers. Some dude got knocked out in the FIRST song with the FIRST band. After that I stayed back, jumped in here and there. But that shit is no Bueno.

My first pit was Iron Maiden, and all I remember was clinging on to a random guy in front of me. I was 13 and 5’4 and everyone else was 30+ and at least 5’8. Oh yeah, and I hated getting my feet stomped on (I now have steel toe for moshing).

Personally I've never understood the point of moshpits. They've always annoyed me because since I'm super short I have to stand close to the stage so I can actually see the band, and sadly that's where the moshpits are... and so I always end up getting a hand smashed in my face even though I try to stay out of it. Makes me furious as I just want to enjoy the music. If I didn't have to stand close to the stage I probably wouldn't mind the moshpit. I like to see other metalheads enjoying themselves at the concert, so it's fine by me if it's the "safe" kind of moshpit you are talking about. But if you want to straight up have a brawl, go do it somewhere else, not at a concert.

TL;DR - Firsthand witness to the rise and evolution of the mosh pit, and why I nearly quit altogether. When I was a kid in/around the L.A. metal scene, I guess around 1979-80, for a while by then there had been a very popular dance called the 'pogo', which was hilarious, as you can see in UK news clips and fan-shot stuff of the era - basically people hopping up and down. We all wanted to try it. Punk/metal crossover was already going full steam where I was, right before the big 5 thrash explosion, and anybody just went to any gig. There was some friction, but mostly just fun. Here's the funny part; this kind of rowdy [drunken] behavior wasn't just a fad for us as it was in in the UK, so things progressively got more aggressive and fun. Not making any statement about drugs and alcohol one way or the other here, but the rock/metal scene back then was often one big, blurred out party. And a funny thing happens when super fucked-up people try and 'pogo' - they basically fall on each other, which was even more hilarious! So that was happening, and along comes this new thing called 'skanking', which was a takeoff of a move ska fans were doing at the time: kind of a comical, bent knees strut where one's knuckles swoop really low to the ground. These [mostly] guys would need space on the dance floor to do their thing, so as they navigate the the sea of drunken pogo, folks really start to fall over onto each other - but now in a direction...sort of. For a while I recall it was kind of confusing, but we all eventually started doing this in a circle, it was not as hilarious as the stuff before - but it was fucking awesome! Metal bands didn't dig it at their shows as much yet, but what could they do? It was the will of the people! Also, the hardcore scene bulldozed smack into the punk scene [pun intended], who were turning kinda goth by then or whatever, if not hardcore. Bands like Black Flag started drew a much more aggressive style pit, which by then everybody called it 'slam dancing', then just slamming; as in "Let's go slam". I believe by then we were taking cues from the NYxHC scene, bands like Murphey's Law and later on, Cro Mags, et al. L.A. was now the most joyfully, violently fun scene on the west coast. San Francisco bands at the time were terrified by us, but eventually just jumped right in; it's only human nature. Soon enough, around 83, Slayer happened, locally. Metallica were on the ascent really fast after the split up north, home of Cliff Burton and also the mighty Exodus, while Mustain's original Megadeth lineup challenged just about anybody to step up \m/ Personally, I don't even know anyone who had ever heard the word 'mosh' until around 85, from 'Gung Ho', last cut on the B side of Anthrax, Spreading the Disease. Similarly, nobody even says 'slam dance' 'skanking', or 'pogo' since then for decades now - it's been the mosh pit ever since then. I believe the term originates within the NYC hardcore/thrash scene of that era. I guess it was around the early/mid 90s when I became fairly burnt out getting punched in the face, and having my ribs cracked and freak-ass weirdo kids with razors. The 1990 Clash of the Titans in my town was an awesome pit - in the lawn section! It had been raining, so the ground was kind of soaked, and the angle of the hill was steep - just enough room for a decent pit on one side. It was really one of the most fun pits in memory for me; as everybody got more intoxed from $3 tubs of beer, it became impossible to take the muddy, downhill turn and 'run' back up hill, so it was like a demolition derby pileup at the bottom - but everybody was having a cool time because it was hilarious. Riiight at the end of the show [Megadeth encore], I spot this jerk who had not been there the whole night; a skinny, freckle-faced ginger kid with kind of a bowl haircut and a totally psychotic grin, barreling down the hill, kind of at me. He knew I saw the little X-acto blade in his hand, and steered clear of me [more like veered clear] to sprint back up the hill in his relatively mud-free clothing and psychosis. The show was just about done, so I basically bailed two minutes before most people were out of their section. It was a great concert, but that last part left an unpleasant aftertaste. A few years down the road, maybe 95-96, a friend was in town and wanted me to go with to see her friend's band waaay out in BFE. Band's already on when we walk in. There's a pit, and I'm thinking my usual, "Hm, should I?" But it was a creepy feeling in that place; like maybe something fucked up happened right before we went in. I kinda noticed people were standing stiffly, as far away from the pit the could get. It was a small place, and as soon as I noticed the weird vibe - right in front of me, this obvious dude-bro from the wrestling team or whatever body slams a much smaller kid onto a rough, painted concrete floor. Kid was obviously fucked up as his friends kinda dragged him out. It was just ugly and painful to witness. My friend and I turned around and walked right back out the door. Other than maybe a few times after that, I generally lost interest for a long time but eventually got back into it about 12 years ago. It's still fun. I'll check out any show that's cool, but no way would I even want to do a real 'tough guy' hardcore or brutal death pit these days, but also don't stand back on the wall with the rest of the old guys. Usually, I can evaluate any crowd and the pit therein almost immediately. I generally just usually weasel my way up front and stick there, but if I do pit, most often I just see fun and respect in there, and maybe surprise that I even know what I'm doing.

I honestly feel that the people who start getting violent in mosh pits need to be kicked out of the mosh pit and sent somewhere else so everyone else can have fun. That's my insight.

One of them actually knocked a buddy of mine out 2 songs into the band that he went to go see. he has no recollection of that night. today I was telling a friend of mine how different the metal culture is from others, what I told her was that Ive never been harressed at a metal gig and Ive attended to different genres of it and that Ive never felt in danger at one (except for the fucking hardcore gigs, that shit is violent af I was trying to not get punched or something but since my city has more punk influences I know that it wasn't that agressive such as others cities from my country that have stronger hardcore influences), I told her how we just abandon our backpacks with our wallets at a random corner and that at the end of the show we go get our stuff and that everything is fine. The metal community is like a huge family and you can talk to everyone if you need anything. When it comes to going out at night I think that the safest place to be is at a metal gig, I went clubbing twice with my friends and the 2 times there were troubles, clubs are way more dangerous trust me, if you low your guard you can get raped really easily its so bad. Of course that there are bad people everywhere but I found the metal community way more trust worthy than others. Don't be afraid, just go out and have fun you won't regretit, even if you go alone, you will probably make some friends there too. Just make sure to avoid the core side at the beggining since you are not used to it and you will be fine.

I think you are correct when you say it's a respect issue. I don't go into the pit anymore because of this too. I think there was (back in my pit participation days) a general feeling of group camaraderie and respect for each other that allowed the "aggression" to be released but everyone still had your back. It used to be an experience that everyone shared and enjoyed but sadly it has degraded, as you pointed out, to an individual action for a few that want to exert their will/violence on everyone else. I really used to enjoy participating in mosh pits, and sustained a few minor injuries, but at this stage in my life I can't afford a serious injury to sideline me from doing the other things in life that I enjoy, nor would I want to participate in these violent acts against others.

i think that mosh pit exist because all the metal music inspire a very powerful energy and you wanna scream, you wanna kick some asses... BUT! no one wants to hurt each other beacuse at the end, metalheads are united as one... you go to a concert to enjoy the music and feel that brutal vibe not to kill people and being hurted... Here in México there's a very good thrash metal band called Strike Master and in their show they call for a "mommie" and one of the public get wrapped in a duct tape and... sadly there are many guys that go to the hospital because of it... and still more sadly... a minor lost his speech beacuse they fall down to the ground... cheers!

This past Monday (Nov. 20th, 2017) my boyfriend, his nephew and I, went to a Cannibal Corpse concert. It my 3rd time, my boyfriend's fifth time, and his nephew's first time. The moshers that were, as you said, intentionally hurting others - punching, windmills, spin kicks, etc - were going around doing their bullshit, and EVERY time, a fight would break out. My boyfriend even got sucker punched, and we were outside the mosh pit. That is NOT what a metal show is all about. I was pissed. Ruined the whole night! From my observation, it's straightedgers that mosh that way. Like, Cannibal Corpse is not like a fucking Hatebreed show. Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit!

I ALWAYS moshed at shows, but I haven't been able to even go to a show in 15 years or more due to severe injury to my spine/back. But the mosh pits I was always in was having fun, no intentional injuries or fights. I was 6'7" back then, able to hold my own (I grew up playing basketball with the guys, so I had to learn to be tough). Yes, I got black eyes, cuts, etc. but nothing major and nothing was intentional. I've only been knocked down once at a TON show, and next thing I knew, hands were grabbing me everywhere to pull me up. I loved moshing and I miss it, but not having gone to a show in such a long time, I don't know if things have changed regarding the pits or not.

My first time in the slam pit, I fell like 5 or 6 times in a row. I got picked up every time and kept on thrashing. My friend and I eventually got out of there (I'm rather short, but he is taller then me by a good 6 or so inches), but we got back in there soon enough. All in all, we had a good time, even though by the end of it, we just kinda hung out in the back of the pit. Pits should be there to release aggression, but there is a code of ethics involved and I don't think very many concert-goers understand that.

I love metal but I am afraid to go to concert and see people ruining what I love. I am different even between metalheads. You either are pop/club music lover with tan skin and pearl smile, or you are harsh long hair metalhead loving trashing things up. But I love literature, poetry, history, classical music and metal as well. Would I belong among other metalheads? Metal to me is strong, beautiful, complex music, like Kamelot or Epica, singing about social/cultural/historical stuff, also some STS or Draconia, who put nice gothic vibe in music. I`m afraid to be disappointed if I go to Wacken to hear a voice of, let`s say, Floor, but I see people disrespecting each other. Or if I come with friends to a bar with some underground metal band, but only see drunk people... It is so hard to find people who are really like you.

Moshing used to be the highlight of a metal concert experience for me. For the same reasons you brought up in your video, I steer clear of them. Obviously in any normal mosh pit you're gonna end up with bruises and scratches and wake up sore as all hell the next day, but leaving a concert with a bloody nose and possibly broken bones or internal bleeding isn't worth it. It really bugs me that people who actually know how to mosh and have fun are so much more few and far between, these days. That is to say, at least they are far and few between at the shows i've attended now a days.

I need moshing. I need to release the energy and violence is a very good way to do it. One of the only places violence is legal too:D But i definitely agree that it should within reason, fists shouldn't be a part of it. Respect your fellow moshers, don't intentionally badly damage peoples bodies and take into consideration how much who your slamming into can take. Ramming a small person, like maybe a female for example and doing it hard like you would a giant can easily break bones. Tone it down for the 5, 6" twiggy girl.

Great subject and nice to see others' insights. I have loved the pit for years, but I've always been reasonably confident I'd walk out okay so that colours my perspective. At some gigs there was no question that I'd go in from the start, others I'd try and be sociable with mates that just wanted to watch the band with a beer and chill at the back, but when a decent tune starts up it ignites something inside me that I don't want to fight, and knowing there's like minded people somewhere near the front of the crowd is such a great feeling. My best experiences were first a double circle pit for Korn, Friday night at Download (2007 maybe?); when Blind broke down the two circles hit each other like a chainsaw! The other was a dream lineup for me, again at Download a few years later: Unearth, 36 Crazyfists and Killswitch back to back on the same stage! I got a cut over my eye when a poor bloke got bounced off my head! Ruined me for the day after I finally came out but boy it was worth it! It's the catharsis of the moment and the camaraderie of the fans, with awesome music pounding in your ears, it's just electric. I only ever saw one guy behaving like a prick at a gig, hitting people and getting personally offended about the pit, but that was a singular exception; also the only inappropriately careless hardcore dancer I ever saw was at the Electric Ballroom almost a decade ago. From my experience at gigs the hardcore dancers normally do their bit in the middle of the big walls of death or the circles that implode on themselves in a similar way, and I really appreciate it, eapecially when you see that rare treat, a guy with some breakdancing or martial arts skills, though of course it goes without saying that they're just expressing themselves, it's something I love to see. I say if you don't want a hard time you won't be in the front rank for the battle with or without those guys; I often lead the charge with my arms behind my back and nobody's ever taken a straight swing for my face so I reckon England's metal community is pretty decent on balance, but accidents will happen and if you don't want to get hurt it isn't the place for you!

I recently saw Devil You Know, Devildriver and Hatebreed. Complete dichotomy in the pit. My friend and I actually started the DYK pit and it was very cool. No one was being too violent and everyone was having a great time. I got pushed off balance and I was about to be picked up by a bunch of different people. I had a grin on my face the whole time. When Devildrive came up, Dez controlled the pit completely. He made sure everyone was having a good time. It was the first time I jumped into a circle pit and had no worries about jackasses slamming me to get trampled. I jumped in right after a wall of death and everyone was having a great time. I stayed back when Hatebreed took the stage because I knew the pit would be awful. Sure enough, every song more and more people were walking out bloodied. I actually carried a kid out who got elbowed in the head and was knocked out. I think it's just the people not knowing how to act at a concert. With bands like FFDP, their fans are more than likely new to the genre and have never been put inside a real pit

I haven't been in a mosh pit (actually haven't been to a concert that could have a hardcore mosh pit), but I saw Iron Maiden a few weeks ago and there were some people who crowd surfed, but even they did it properly. They went from front to back, so people could see them coming and wouldn't get kicked in the head. Metalheads are overall great people, it was my first ,,big'' concert and I wasn't really sure where to go, so this complete stranger showed me where to go and even got me a better place to stand. It was awesome.

i went to a metal show last year and after the wall of death an actual fight looked like it was about to happen in the pit. these two guys were shoving each other and it looked like they were seriously about to start fighting. the song ended, they hugged, and went to the bar. another punk rock show i went to, we were slamming into each other for an hour, and there was this one girl who was clearly wasted and i caught her as she was falling headfirst into a pole. after the set we were all high fiving. when it works, it's the most fun you'll ever have. i've been clocked a few few times, almost broke my nose once, but still... a good pit with a good crowd, like being in a room surrounded by close friends.

Side note; Multiple torn mucels, punctures from spikes and studs, many a broken nose and torn piercings. It's a dangerous game and never been in a Canadian put but they are rough over here. Especially the nu metal pits. And does explain 5 finger death punch. But again...read the room!

It seems better in Europe. Even at Five Finger Fist Fuck last year at Graspop there was a normal moshpit. Just like the rest of the festival. Last weekend was Graspop again, and I was in the pit for about 20 shows. Nothing besides some bruises. And the shows included such as Bullet For My Valentine, Slayer, Testament, Trivium, Behemoth, Muniscipal Waste and many more.
