One gig many years ago, our drummer was having issues with his hihat. Every time he'd hit it the stand would just collapse with a loud "kachang" sound. He'd be scrambling around trying to play and reset the hihat every few minutes. He was going mad but the rest of us were laughing our asses off. He got so mad we had a major band fight after the gig, he quit, the singer hit our lone roadie who then flattened the singer, the bass player stormed off in a huff.... band dissolved. Good days lol.

I was playing "Living On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi with my band. I had my lead guitar player barely plugged in a Marshall Amp. When the solo starts, He walked to the front of the stage to have the audience have a better look at the solo playing. But doing that, He pulled the jack and disconnect the guitar with the amp. And so, when he was playing the solo, He wasn't even plugged. And to make it even worse, after the solo he looked at the sound guy telling him to plug the guitar back into the amp. But instead of doing that, he asked him "Where do I plug this?" It was bad, man

In 1970or 71, at 12 or 13vyears old my guitar strap came off and my guitar fell face down while playing live. That was before strap locks were available. On another ocassion our lead singer forgot his mic. at home. On a third live play our rythym guitarist had a battery failure on his guitar and no spare battery, we had to delay our start time so he could go to the store to get a new one. Then there's outdoor concerts, last summer we had three called off due to rain two hours before the show, I wonder how many will be called off this summer? Another time playing outdoors at the start of the show the wind kicked up, the sky went dark, picknick umbrellas we flying, then all but around 25 of our audience evacuated, just in time for the sun to come out again. Here's another, I just walked onstage around four year's ago to see our guitarists prized guitar fall off it's stand, it's headstock snap just after the nut, good thing he brought a spare!!! When you play live anything can happen, you litterally need to have two of everything as a spare. These are just a few of the many problems we ran into playin live.

Honestly the smaller audiences are more intimidating than the large crowds. You can actually note the facial features on every person in the crowd at that point so it amplifies the terror factor, plus shows that small increase the likelihood of you interacting with the crowd in a meaningful way either before, during, or after the show.

My worst time playing live was when a country band called me on stage to play lead for them in a private party, at the host’s request. Motherfuckers hand me a hollowbody guitar connected to a fender amp, for playing the gucking lead. And me, being the metal/hard rock girl that I am, I was scared shitless, and I froze big time. Until a couple of bars in, I heard in Obi Wan’s voice inside my head “Use the blues scale”, and I played something kinda “decent”, kinda... The audience and band told me it was a good solo, but from my point of view I played like if Nick Jonas and lil Wayne had a baby, looking at the video it was also kinda decent too. Knowing that, never again, I’m not playing another clean lead in my life, at least not in a genre I played literally once in my life (that ocasion I was talking about)

So glad you mentioned the generalized anxiety disorder. I'm a lifelong sufferer, along with quite a few family members. I feel like people who have it, do have very different lives from people who don't. I do not feel that this necessarily means we have less of a quality of life, just that we live our lives in ways that can seem somewhat depressing to people without the disorder. For instance, I haven't been to SEE a live show in over a decade, because of my anxiety. I love the fact that I can see live shows on my TV screen, and enjoy it to the fullest. To some of my friends, this seems lonely, but it's how I am comfortable. I still love it! It's something that isn't talked about enough, but it really helps when someone well-known brings up the topic.

Personally, playing live is the reason i love music, that feeling of your guitar litterally completely filling a venue, the power behind that, and knowing that everyone in the audience is feeling the music, its q lot more personal and rewarding than watching spotify numbers increase personally. But i must admit, if you have a particularly important show, you feel sick before it

That is like my goal to play live even just for a few people at the bar. Just the feeling of playing your part really well and the audience digging it would be like the best feeling in the world to me. I've been practicing seriously for the last few years looking for a cover band now.

My biggest problem live is when my hands decide to stay in the dressing room. I was in a cover band and we were playing Detroit Rock City. I had to do Ace's solo part in the middle of the song, ya know, when it's just him playing, then the other guitar comes in for the harmony. It's not hard at all and I played it no problem in practice but as soon as it was an all eyes on me scenario, my hands wouldn't work. It was so embarrassing, all I could do was laugh.

Seeing your reasons to not play live, which I can accept, but hearing that you might still consider it, might I offer some suggestions? 1. Go to an open mic night at a local bar or something. (no fat stage crashers, no throwing things, no big crowds to trigger anxiety) 2. Clear the stage of everything but your guitar and amp. (no bad sound guys, no chairs to step on, nothing to trip over) 3. Plant you feet firmly to the ground and do not move them for the duration of your set. (again no tripping) 4. Don't look at the people, look at your guitar. (all they may see is your bald spot, but it keeps you from seeing the more-than-ten-people crowd) 5. Don't talk. (no stroke-things) 6. Improvise your solos. (no guitar-related strokes or memory-lapses) Whether this is actually looked at or liked by Stevie T (or as I like to call him, Ol' Rubberlips), it might also help other live-performance-anxiety people. Have a nice day, and thank you for reading my comment.

Oh man, anxiety. I probably have the same issue although I've played a bunch live anyway. I have a whole system of techniques to deal with it. Like, avoiding talking to people right before/after, avoiding eating very much, napping a few hours before, et cetera. These days I just DJ and I still just... sweat a lot. Funny story for you; Years ago when I was playing metal, my old band's first show was a tiny house party we hosted. I was nervous despite the modest venue. But I am also an audiophile/perfectionist so I thought I HAD to have fresh strings. So I rush out and get them without giving myself any time to put them on and break them in before the party started. Since I was hosting the party, I was trying to be social, yadda yadda. So at the last minute I go run to my bedroom which served as the "green room" and put them on. Another band was playing so I couldn't just play aloud. I tuned with an electric tuner without hearing anything. No big deal! I think you know what happens next; we start the first song and my tuning is totally insane. I think I had a string a whole octave off and at least one other randomly tuned to a different note. I had no idea how to recover. I couldn't play through a whole song like that! So within about 20-30 second in, I stopped and waved off the band, like "False start!!!" Fuuuu... My singer was more experienced than the rest of us and he was effing PISSED. I quickly figured out the fucked up tuning as fast as I could, sweating my ass off in front of our 10-person crowd of friends of ours. After that the show was cool! But that singer never let it go. He quit shortly after. A couple years later he ended up inviting the other guitarist in the band to join his other, more established band. I'm just more of a studio guy. :)
