Quitting teaching will make you happier and give you a real life. Teaching drains your energy like no other job. So many kids are very needy and get little or no attention at home so they seek it endlessly in school..thereby wearing down the teacher so that the teacher has nothing left for her family.

This! ☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼 “mothering” took up so much of my time as a teacher that I didn’t really feel like I was teaching what I was hired to teach, but rather what wasn’t being taught at home.

Teachers end up wearing a lot of different, yet vital, hats. That’s one reason we should be making more. I don’t think the boomer generation realizes that teachers do a lot more than deliver content. Its not like it was in the 1980’s! The kids have changed and so have the policies. You give up your life to do the job.

Yes, even I didn’t understand why teachers always complained about money before I actually became one, but they do the jobs of at least 4 people. Teachers are *SEVERELY* undercompensated.

@@ProcrastinatorsProgress update for you! I found out that I’m being ‘observed’ next week as a parent has expressed ‘concerns’ about my class. I give EVERYTHING to my job and feel as though it’s all been for nothing. I feel hurt, angry and I just want to get hell outta there now. I was also told that a more experienced teacher is joining my class as a room leader. I am the leader! And now I have to job share with her. No other room in the centre has 2 leaders. I’m basically being ‘demoted’ without actually being demoted. It’s public and personal humiliation! Looks like my instincts were right. I’m OUTTA THERE 🙏

@@jessicaherring1507 😮 oh no! I once had a parent sit in during an online session, only to barrage me about how I didn’t know what I was doing because her son was failing- we were into the second half of the year and I didn’t even know what her son looked like because he never showed up for class. She went on to insult me in front of the students. I, of course, muted her, but the students knew what was going on. Just terrible. Especially when admin doesn’t back you up, which is the norm. I hope you’re able to find a better place soon.

For the past two years, I have taught part time and built up my business as an adoption consultant that started organically when I began making KZbin videos about our adoption journey. You can hear the PTSD in your voice. It’s a horrible feeling to drive to work with fear and loathing of the career choice we made that we all thought would be flowers and daisies inspiring young minds. The nuns in the Catholic schools of the 50’s had it right. We’ve let things gone so far to one side kids don’t fear anything. There’s no consequences and it’s often the worst kids get the most positive rewards positive talk and hopes they will try to do better. The endless stories I hear coming from former teachers are even more of a reminder that I did do the right thing leaving teaching.

I hated teaching so much that the first time I quit I got a job on a seismic crew in Superior National Forest. Then the second time I quit I went to truck driving school. Then finally, the last time I quit I shipped out with the merchant marine to haul ammunition to the Gulf War. Hauling 10,000 tons of bombs through the Suez Canal was a pleasure cruise compared to teaching ghetto high school in Cleveland. I finally ended up being a barber for 20 years. Now I’m retired. Teaching blows chunks.

it’s always easier to find jobs which require certification if you have the credential such as teaching, merchant marine, or barbering. They’re not even allowed to hire uncertified people. And initially you’re likely to think that it was just the one job that was so bad. In the case of teaching that would be mistaken as they all pretty much make unreasonable demands.@@ProcrastinatorsProgress
@ProcrastinatorsProgress
@ProcrastinatorsProgress 8 ай бұрын
@marcmeinzer8859 That’s true. Needing the certification does make the applicant pool a lot smaller compared to other jobs that don’t require one, so def easier to find a job. I’ve applied to several jobs recently and haven’t gotten any calls. I put in some teacher applications just to see if I’d get called. Of course, I did -_-

I don’t trust all these help wanted signs. I’m positive that they are only interested in people who’ve never had any sort of a trade or profession. I went into barbering because you can set up your own shop for a very modest outlay especially considering how the average barbershop customer virtually demands that the shop be as ugly as possible so as to ensure that no possible taint of effeminacy attaches to the place so squeamish the customer base is about any sort of pretension. Then also if you want to make any money you really need to set up shop in a blue collar urban slum.@@ProcrastinatorsProgress

@marcmeinzer8859 Yeah, these employers are definitely interested in people who will take the bare minimum. It’s sad really. I think it’s great you thought about working for yourself though. It’s tough but honestly in the long run I think it’s the best way to ensure the best outcome for yourself. Now it’s time for me to figure out a long term plan :)

My girlfriend will not quit but its ruined her mental health and our relationship. She got a masters, and quickly realized it didnt help her, but it looks good for the school. She got stuck doing ESL, the 4th graders are so abusive. They stalker her social media, talk about tiktok all day, ask her why she isnt married yet, cuss, tell her to shut up, make her cry. She wont quit because she got this degree after her parents sacrificed. She also made it her personality so she wont let it go because she believes she's a teacher in her heart. I cant recognize her and its been only 2 years. She gained weight and is on so many anti depressants. A therapist even dropped her because he said she needs to quit or she wont expect the issues to stop. She comes home and has to work for another few hours on class for kids who do not respect her. For anyone in education for education, switch to something else!!

I love teaching however, straight from the start I never wanted to be a traditional classroom teacher in the USA. Initially I wanted to teach abroad and only abroad. While I did sporadically dabble in that for 5 or 6 years, as the saying goes, there’s no place like home. Afterwards, I got it in my head that someway, somehow if I wanted to continue teaching, I would have to do so here in the us and as a traditional teacher too. Very similar to your story, a close friend of mine who I went to high school with, her aunt was the headmaster of a private school in the diocese. She was desperately tenaciously, looking for a teacher, not to mention several other teachers. Like you said your video, BIG RED FLAG! Regretfully, had I known then what I know now I never would’ve entertained that proposition! The school had a turn style of teachers year after year! The aunt of the friend who was the headmaster was a nasty and I mean NASTY starts with a C ends with a T! I am sure you can figure out the rest. I absolutely detest that word. It’s filthy. It’s dehumanizing however sometimes it just fits! Long story short, she was absolutely of no help. She didn’t know what was going on in her school, asking her for clarity or assistance was like trying to get blood out of a rock on top of that, my coworkers and fellow teachers were not exactly authentic or transparent. They made the art of teaching into a cut throat competition. If they could throw you under the bus, they would do so happily as long as it made themselves shine in the process. And this is the type of example that we were supposed to be setting? 🤨 further complicate matter, similar to your situation, the schools location was a very remote drive from where I resided. I would wake before the sun did and if I did not leave work by or before 2:30 PM, you would literally take me two hours and change to arrive home! By the time I did so, it goes without saying that I was physically emotionally and psychologically drained, and the management was not necessarily on my side. Having that for nearly a year, it had pushed me beyond endurance. The principal humiliated me disparage me dehumanized me and completely ripped me a new one for circumstances that had nothing to do with me or out of control. It’s my overwhelming feeling that she enjoyed the trip from the disparaging behavior she bestowed upon her teachers. After that nightmare ended fast forward to more recent times and I still like teaching however, I do not want it in the traditional sense. There is similar to the end of your video and especially with my international, cultural and linguistic background I decided to go into business for MYSELF! 😊 I must say it’s been the best decision, the most fulfilling the most rewarding I could have made. Add to that I am in the process of building a tiny house on wheels so I could be fluid and mobile and not financially obligated to my residence. I can live anywhere and go anywhere. I want not have to worry about it traditional brick and mortar 9 to 5, nor do I have to give up teaching either. I applaud your bravery for doing what you truly felt in your heart a lot of teachers and people in general just put up with and tolerate what they need to maintain a sense of professionalism and other obligations in their life. As a consequence, they miss out on freedom and especially miss out on being happy! You only have one knife to live. Most people do so or live it the way people dictate for them to live it, but sometimes that dictation is not cookie cutter or homogenous for everybody.

I am so burnt out and just as drained as you explained ( I work in Payroll/ Accounting ) and wanting to quit what I am doing right now and was considering getting my certification as a way to switch professions. You may have just solidified that Teaching is not the best alternative. I have no idea what is, I want to work for myself but have no idea on what exactly. That whole last section of the video it sounded like me talking about all the things I'm feeling, going through. I'm in Texas too. I am 100% making decisions and staying out of fear right now, I hate it. The feeling of looking for jobs though, I look but never apply something is physically/ mentally stopping me. I wish you the best of luck on your journey and hope we all find where we are meant to be.

@sarahmiller6458 Lots of people want to go into teaching because, on the surface, it’s seems like there’s a lot of perks, well, one really big perk-the time off. Trust me. Any teacher will tell you they’re not really “off”. It’s a profession your WHOLE heart is going to have to be in if you want to really stick with it. It’ll be the only thing to get you through everything you’d be going through, because YOU WOULD go through A LOT, starting with doing the work of at least 3 people, maybe 4. I know some people who LOVE being teachers, but it's because that's their true calling. As far as working for yourself, I feel like accounting is the PERFECT thing! Maybe look into starting to freelance and building up a portfolio so you can eventually only work with direct clients. Have you heard of the SBDC? It’s a GREAT resource that helps you with anything business related. I recommend them 100%. They can help you get started, and it’s FREE! Thanks for your kind words, and I wish you the best 💞

What year did you get certified? I started alt cert in 2016 and even though I had a B.S. in Math and had taken all the undergrad secondary ed coursework, it was going to be 2 years, a portfolio, and a masters degree before my certificate would be issued. I received a 1 year temporary provisional certificate in the meantime.

@michaelamelton-berry5403 I received my provisional certificate in February 2020. After working 1 year, I received my standard certificate. My program wasn’t very helpful. I got my core subjects certificate only because I didn’t know it was possible to get ELA only. Then I was interested in possibly switching to Kindergarten bilingual, but it would almost be like starting over-needing to pass 3 tests, so I dropped that idea. So many hoops to jump through just to not be treated like a professional in the end.

(Had already been at it for 2 years when the pandemic hit so when the spring break rumors started I was like "please God let it be true." 😂) Hybrid teaching that next school year was an absolute shitshow. Teaching was a formative experience to be sure but I don't miss it. Sometimes in my new life I like to just look around my work environment, remind myself of how I'm not teaching anymore, and savor the little things: Getting a coffee whenever I want, going to the restroom to pee whenever I need, doing absolutely zero work after hours, and never *ever* being harassed by children. 😂

I haven't got much confidence in teachers. I come from a family of teachers and my own experience of them. I see many serious flaws in their training. I do agree there is much greater stress nowadays. I decided not to train as one. There are lots of perks to being a teacher. The long holidays and I agree they have to do preparation in them. The school trips are expensive and are 25:47 peeks for the teachers as they go free and their families(you mustn't do it too often of course because you will get a reputation). They like to think they are caring and understanding but not one teacher understood my problems, and I was a normal child and my mother was a teacher too. I do accept they have a lot of breakdowns and I am sorry about that and which needs to be addressed. They are not the only with stress at work and they can get jobs in the holidays. They don't do too badly over salaries compared with other people. At one time yhe teachers had free school meals if they ate with the pupils as they were educating them socially! They take over the role of parenting and mothers are undermined. Children are not always ready at five to go to school and are still bonding with their mothers who are their first teachers. There are some good 28:03 I see through a lot of them. They have always whinged. The bank manager to me that my husband 'got a thumping good salary' I agree years ago. Teaching is not a sinecure but I have little confidence in them. I have taught a subject and one of my pupils sang my praises and I was promoted to a higher level. It is a pity I view schoolteachers this way as quite often it was suggested I go into teaching. I don't have this attitude to higher education or adult education and I know schoolteachers who other forms of education. I saw serious flaws in the trainingof teachers and that is why I didnt do it. I don't think 31:52 teachers are trained well nowadays i can still see but the stress levels have gone up unfairly. Many people have stressful jobs with lower salaries. Teachers are too whingey with all their perks and seem to know it all and they don't!

@catherineventure3996 I can see why you feel that way. I agree that I didn’t feel prepared when I started teaching. Then when I started, I didn’t feel supported at all by administration. I would send a student to the office for their behavior and they would return with a lollipop. That type of stuff tends to make it kind of a slippery slope for teachers, where they just try so many strategies and none of them seem to work, or some work but they’re then told that’s not the way they should do things. It’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t type of thing. As far as the pay, compared to other jobs that don’t require degrees or extensive requirements, sure, teachers make more. But teaching does require a degree, lots of training, tests, etc, so compared to other actual PROFESSIONAL jobs, the pay does not come even close. So for the all the hoops you have to jump through to even qualify to find a job, it doesn’t make it worth it. Especially considering student loan debt.

I’m sorry you had that experience. It’s true. Schools are just missing the mark, and we could go on and on about the reasons for that. So many people want to go into teaching/ working in the school system because of the schedule, but that schedule comes at a price.

Great this turned out as a happy ending story. If I could tell you where you might have gone wrong. Number 1 only being in 2 teaching jobs for like 2 years pretty much 1 year each may have scared schools away and also telling your 2nd school you were resigning after semester 1 may have lost you prospects in terms of recommendations. Very possible that since you were a 2nd year teacher lacking as much experience you were glossed over for teachers with more experience. In all honesty the hiring process is dumb and sometimes you won’t get acknowledged if you’ve got all the right stuff.

@retentiveguy7624 oh I definitely thought about everything that could have gone wrong. I didn’t make the decision lightly, but I 100% knew I was taking a risk. I also got my boss’ blessing (he was a prior lawyer who hated it and switched over to teaching, so he empathized with me), so as far as a recommendation, I felt fine, and considering I wasn’t planning on getting another teaching job, that’s why I considered leaving midyear. Also, I had two teaching jobs, but the first one I was hired in February and only to finish off the year. The second one, I was there for two full years. But yes, thankfully all turned out well for me.

What’s messed up is cliquish coworkers who talk about you because you have morales. They tell others how good teachers with emotional intelligence need to toughen up. Yet none of them would last a second if they had to teach an elective class such as music or art where we teach 20-25 kids by ourselves with no teacher aid (unlike them who do have aids). @ProcrastinatorsProgress
@ProcrastinatorsProgress 4 ай бұрын
I’m sorry you’re feeling that way. It is a shame that that’s where we’re at with our education. In that case, I’d suggest you ensure that you are very involved in what your kids are doing at school. Ask them questions and look for evidence of their work. Reach out to teachers for quick updates if they’re not already giving you those themselves. Try to stay on a positive note with your kids’ teachers. That is very motivating for teachers-to have parents who care and are doing their part. Ensure that you are guiding your kids on what is expected of them in the classroom and I guarantee they will have a better learning experience. Much of the problems that are occurring is that the parents aren’t as involved and teachers are needing to teach things outside of their content area, such as basic manners. That, for me, was very frustrating. I hope your kids have a great school year and that you are able to relax and feel confident in their teachers and administrators. Good luck ❤️

Take it from me from my experience Broward Kelly Service is a lot better and even way better than teaching for Kelly Service from South Florida. Broward administrators and the school board staff are just a lot more organized and professional. And they don't hire young inexperienced staff members like Kelly Service from Miami does. Congratulations 🎉 I have 3 years. It is so sad that the system abuses both those who see it as a calling and those of us who got into it later. It’s like being in a codependent abusive relationship where we stay for the children. The people in power know that they have a captive audience, and those of us would be teachers, and they take advantage of that. The other issue is most teachers are females and our society as we know takes advantage of that and does not pay females what they are truly worth. I have always asked the question do we really care about the children and our youth? that’s a rhetorical question of course. What is sad is that it’s the children who suffer and it’s really tough for us to see what is going on and no one listens to us and we all know that we will care and take care children. But at some point, the abusive relationship has to take precedence and we just simply need to leave. Anyone going into teaching or thinking about it? I would say no way Until the system changes if I was within 10 or 15 years of teaching, I would leave, but since I am near retirement, I have no choice but to stick it out. I have been over 25 years and the last six or seven have been unbearable because there are no consequences in our schools. This year I had two parents complain that I was being mean to their kids and they had them moved and I was reprimanded. I have been using the same consequence system for 20 years that I got from a master teacher who became a principal. I shared this with my principal and she didn’t care . Congratulations, and I wish you all the luck in your future future

Yes, unfortunately people with the heart for teaching are taken advantage of. It is indeed quite sad. It makes sense for you to stay-you’re so close!!! I hope it goes quickly for you so you can enjoy your retirement after many years of service :) And you are right. The lack of accountability is just crazy. A lot of these administrators just want to save face, instead of actually teach. Unfortunately, I don’t see that changing any time soon. Thank you, and I wish you the best as well :)

I’m definitely making a lot less than I was before, but that’s a sacrifice I was willing to make in order to get my mental health back. This isn’t something I planned to do permanently, but more so as just something to keep me afloat while I get my bearings. The sacrifice has been worth it to me, but sacrifice is the operative word. I’ve had to tighten my budget a lot, cut unnecessary expenses and luxuries. That, to me, seemed more logical than staying at a job that paid me more but kept me miserable.

Get out of middle school. You need a mean streak, and a mean principal, and a nasty attitude. Even then it is marginal, just to survive. Middle school is the bottom of the barrel. 4th and 5th grades are the crown jewels, especially in a small school, best in a rural small school. There, the students are totally different. There, teaching can be fun, even in the upper grades. It is like going to a different country. Stay away from any large schools. Find a tiny school and have fun.

A friend of mine just quit at a private school after 10 years teaching. Teachers are needed because without them there are no other ways for kids to advance. However, I don't think it is worth it considering the fact a person can get a job without a degree and make more money now. I could not imagine putting up with these misbehaving kids, raising these kids, crazy parents, and teaching to standardized testing.
