It's definitely a personal preference. I have mine turned in slightly.

Yes, I'm with you on this one
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
It’s so personal isn’t it. Some people look better with the hoods turned in!
@rg807Ай бұрын
It's more comfortable for most people. Hold your hands out in front of you and put your hands in the most neutral feeling position and you'll see that they are slightly canted inward. Regarding your elbows, you only have to move your levers in a small amount to get the aero advantage. Doing so won't force your elbows out.
@WhatTheFlipOfficialАй бұрын
Pretty sure turned in hoods should also account for your calibrated handlebar width. If you are supposed to ride a 400mm wide bar, you should have a 420mm wide bar turned in to equal 400mm wide. This prevents the flared elbows but provide the wrist joint relief which is infinitely better than a sore web.
@FL-ym6hmАй бұрын
Mine are turned in somewhere in between what you are demonstrating. Only for hand and wrist comfort on 100+ milers. It’s preference. Also went with 38cm bars last year. Made a big difference for me.
@FedericoHazamaАй бұрын
as you get narrower you tend to need a longer reach/stem to acommodate your arms.
@samcollisson9404Ай бұрын
I ride 36cm bars now, with turned in hoods. Not a crazy angle but it actually feels more natural to me to have the hoods turned it. I like having my hands a bit more horizontal rather than the vertical kind of handshake position. I have flares on the drops too.
@samcollisson9404Ай бұрын
To add to that point, with the flared bars - my shifters pretty much follow the line of the flare on the drops.
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
Did you already have it this narrow for the TT?
@samcollisson9404Ай бұрын
@@cyclingunboxedno I had 38cm for the TT. New for this crit season
@robertkeefer1552Ай бұрын
I turned my Shimano levers in slightly and find it more comfortable for me. However everyone is different in feeling on this.
@kpizzle1985Ай бұрын
I'm 6ft with ~40cm shoulder width, I ride a 38cm bar with a slight turn in as it's still more comfortable. My elbows don't flare out, my wrists just roll in.
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
That’s what I thought would happen with me when I tried it but likely some different morphology
@Bikey_McBeardfaceАй бұрын
I turn mine in very slightly because I fit a 36 bar, and until recently, they were hard to come by. I got used to the wrist angle from being forced to use 38/40s.
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
Very true! Only in the last 2 years have narrower bars become widely available. I think it’s a good thing from the industry to fit people’s body shapes better
@Bikey_McBeardfaceАй бұрын
@@cyclingunboxed It was "trendy" to go wide for most of the 00's too, and just as it seemed to be going back to sensible sizes Gravel made it fashionable again, this time with a massive flair which made it even worse 🤣
@kimwarner6050Ай бұрын
I think this is only a Shimano thing with hoods turned in. On my bikes with scram I have the shifters straight. Scram shifters for me are too fat and short. Therefore straight is the only way they are somewhat comfortable
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
Do you think this might change with the new sram red levers? It’s hard to say until you use them isn’t it.
@kimwarner6050Ай бұрын
@cyclingunboxed maybe if you have fat hands. I haven't seen them in the flesh. I didn't realize how much I hated the scram shifters until I switched back to Shimano. I run very narrow bars. They're 300 on the tops and 330 in the drops. I still turn in my shifters.

I turned mine just a bit ... yes i dislike the elbow sticking out but now i can use my brakes XD Its not a hyraulic brakes... its an ordinary mech rim brakes and i don't know why but the lever is harder to push to brake ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@valmorellАй бұрын
Or you could just try different settings to see which you prefer...
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
For sure worth a play around isn’t it. That’s how found out that the turn in wasn’t for me personally

Aside...what bars do u have on the Roubaix?
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
They are a Roval copy. I have a full video on them below. Unfortunately the stem keeps breaking, even after a full carbon fibre wrap which you can see in the hold video here! I guess buy cheap buy twice 😂 I have ordered the Elves Orome bars this time and should be here next week. Apparently the branded Chinese are much better now. Can you buy cheap carbon handlebars? Great vid as usual...although I dont share the sentiment. I finf that turned in hoods more naturally mimic your wrist natural position. Vegan Cyclist had a vid/short showing this.But all our bodies are diff so I guess whats works for 1 might not work for another
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
Thank you. I appreciate it! For sure. So personal right! Lucky you to be comfortable and aero on the hoods
@l.d.t.6327Ай бұрын
Your bars are wide and have no flare. They don’t seem to be the best to have hoods turned in. If your elbows stick out with hoods turned in, your riding position is off vs. 95% of riders who get more aero with hoods turned in. Try other bars and position. Or don’t, but add a disclaimer in the video that your situation isn’t representative and doesn’t apply to most riders. Maybe triathletes or other freaks.
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
I do think I get it across quite well that it’s just a personal thing for me in the video. I do say that many people do turn in and are just fine very early on. I don’t think the bars are too wide more me. They are 400 and going any narrower feels uncomfortable for me. If you have any further details or links that explains why my rising position might be off I would love to see them to understand further!
@l.d.t.6327Ай бұрын
@ it’s mainly those speci bars. They’re not ideal to set them up comfortably with hoods inwards. But if done so, your elbows out indicate your riding position isn’t fine tuned towards the optimum aero position (while still feeling comfortable ofcourse).
@galenkehlerАй бұрын
If you turn your hoods in, that means your handlebars are too wide. Simple
@cyclingunboxedАй бұрын
I am usually of the opinion too that going for a narrower bar first is a better option
