I am not going to lie I screamed throughout the whole video! :,D I am a painter that needs a palette to mix the colors together, and clear pigments to get even washes. I could never dab continuously directly into another pan with a pigment loaded brush, but I can see the nice effects you can get by letting the pigments to their thing on the paper! Sometimes I do, but then again I make sure the pan is clean in its own color again, and that I use barely a corner. I would never say this painting style is wrong, nor do I want to imply that in any ways, just making sure that this is clear. Each painting style is individual and valid, and everyone should paint how it suits them the best and enjoys it the most!

Well here's the good news...you can still totally mix on the page, avoid a palette and not double dip in your paint pans...just rinse in between and you'll get the same fee, dynamic vibe I do but without "contaminating" pans :) Ohhh I know this painting style is "wrong" by many standards. It works for me and like you said I want to widen the idea of what is valid and valued, especially for beginner painters! Thanks so so much for your wise words.

Right....you should never say " stop mixing on your pallet....and even mixing on the paper has many ways of doing so...many that work better than this style

What a great way to waste a tonne of good paint whether this way or mixing on paper. For some of us who cannot afford much, all that you wipe on tissue or mix on paper would’ve helped create more art. Peace 😊

I love being a watercolor neophyte because I don’t have ANY preconceived notions as to what is the proper way to do things. My mind is so open that my brains are falling out all over my paintings but instead of freaking out I just blend in that gray matter using techniques I learned from you! Hahaha! Being a rule-bender my whole life, the only thing making me a tad bit uncomfortable is that I have no hard and fast rules to break. I do this too and you’re right it makes some great effects and blends of colors, that’s why we do it lol but extra tip for any of your viewers who may be newer to watercolor, you can also have several clean brushes and dedicate one to each color if you’re not doing the first technique. Or you can move some paint of each color you want to use over to a clean spot on your palette and pick them up onto the same brush from there. Hope that makes sense. Just another tool if you want to keep your individual pans of paints clean

You are my godsend. I am a realistic colored pencil artist. I was invited to and actually had an exhibit at a local art gallery last month, so I must not completely suck. Anyway, I decided to try my hand at Watercolors. I have been almost in tears with frustration. I am horrible at it. (I painted with acrylic some years ago) I can't tell you how many sheets of watercolor paper that have been torn and thrown into the trash. I can't get anything right. Then, just yesterday I found you on youtube. I have been through your first beginners video and doing the WOWD chart. Am redoing today just because I just have to. Then today I see this video. OH MY GOSH! Mixing from my paints is what I kept finding myself trying to do. I thought it was a big faux pas. I don't know if you are familiar with PanPastels, but I have done that all of the time with those and a paint brush to do backgrounds. It just seems so natural to me. But you just turn everything I have watched and read upside down. Thank you. You make me want to try again. And believe me, it is killing me to go back to my drafting table. But I will. I am glad you have so many videos. If anything, even if I never get it, you make me smile. :)

Oh my! I remember in grade school we were told never to cross colors in the pans. Trying to get enough of the right colors on a pallet instead was difficult and cumbersome so I was always frustrated. I avoided painting completely until I discovered acrylics which by their liquid nature are easy to mix. Still, I love watercolors and wished for the same ease. This video was like being released from watercolor jail! My flower and fruit finally have a natural depth. Thank you!

I have decided that I’m going to still do on the page mixing but not straight out of my pans, I’m gonna choose the colors ahead of time and lay them out on the palette and then pull from those so I really don’t have to stress about cross color contamination because it really drives me THAG crazy. I do honestly believe this is going to be a great experience for me so learn how to just let go more and more, hopefully with each painting

What fun. This appeals to the inner me that has always added colors that "don't belong" to anything and everything just because I felt they were needed. I love how liberally you set about doing just that. I haven't been as free as you, however, and have restricted myself to always being very careful to not contaminate my colors with other colors. Your demonstration proves that that's not a concern and that even the clean-up of those errant colors afterwards can lead to a whole new painting without wasting any of them. Not only that, but some of them are such nice combinations that it might be a pleasure to come back to them in the next session without having cleaned them up. I believe you've just set this bird free.

Awesome. Good to know. I don't know why I've been so hung up on keeping it all neat before. These mixed-up colors are gorgeous and make for some interesting results. I especially like using them for gems, like opals, where you can pretty well just go nuts with color and it's going to turn out remarkably well even if you haven't done them before.

Have you tried a paint puck for cleaning? I keep one in an small jar of water and one in a larger container and you can get your brush super clean with zero soap which lets me clean my brushes as I go! If you haven’t trie it yet I recommend buying the set of 3 pucks. They are silicone and suction cup on one side, brush cleaner nibs on the other.

I haven’t! I was always nervous they’d be too rough in my brushes? No?

You are so funny! I love the way you take fear out of watercolor. I draw alot in color pencil and charcoal with sucess and seems like watercolor has been my hardest medium to date. Your giving me confidence to keep trying. Thanks!!

I'm binging on your videos! I will definitely have to try this. I'm an acrylic painter, trying to learn watercolor, and trying to mix on a separate palette has not been working great for me. This technique reminds me of the feel of mixing acrylic paints, and it seems natural and fun. I can't wait to try!

Yesterday I mentioned in comments how I learned so much. This was exactly it! I waist so much time mixing that I am exhausted at the end of that and I don’t want to do anymore. Friend I had the shirt with the ponytail and glasses long before I saw your channel but now I know that it’s fate, we are ment to be FRIENDS.

I make such a mess and it seems I waste a lot of paint. I love what you do and the fact that you are showing how to fix things by lifting. I bet I find a color that I like this way a lot quicker. I keep adding more colors trying to find the perfect shade that I could paint my living room with the leftovers..This gives me real hope of learning and having fun at the same time. Love it. I am way too anal when I paint and this should help to loosen me up.

You would love Cindy Baron. She never mixes colours on a pallette but always always on the paper. Plus she barely touches her paper with the brush for days. She does colour washes, mixing colours for days on the paper without her brush ever touching it until about the fifth layer of wash. She is fascinating! I’m not saying she is better than you, she’s totally different in her style of painting. You are fascinating and joyful in your own right. Love your videos!

Hahaha it’s totally unconventional!! Something you can do if the potential mess is stressful-have a “play” palette at the ready that you don’t care too much about “messing up”. Now I’ll say I paint like this with allllll of my palettes, I create artwork they people buy-I’ve never ruined a palette painting like this :)

Seems this is great as we begin, or just to sit and be spontaneous. I’m embarking on a 15-30 min daily practice, this will help me not over think it!!Trying to be in control of exact color we end up with is too much of a challenge in beginning before we learn the colors and their ways, opaque, or transparent etc. Later making charts and mixing ahead for a project but to make art happen this is the ticket. Maybe two palettes for persons that must control🤷‍♀️
