Shoutout to Decent Sampler. Definitely hear you on the storage, but having all the unique instruments is super cool

Thank you. This is a great introduction for folks trying to wrap their head around sampler tech. I was never a big fan of granular synthesis since I formed that opinion based on the tech from many years ago. But this form of synthesis has grown more than other formats and is now simply amazing if you compare it to like 10 years ago. 💥

Great video! I love Romplers, but you're right about the size thing being an issue on mobile. I'm in the camp that thinks a Rompler IS a synthesizer if it includes a subtractive synthesis section.

I’d love to see an app where there’s multiple wave players and where the player output could be cross “synced”, cross-modded and stuff like that. Not wavetable, but something meant to play whole samples. It’ll probably end up sounding messed up but that’s cool too.

Well done. You kind of went big on explaining ROMpler use and your history with it, but you are clear and helpful as you go. This is your norm, and I am grateful for your reliable attention to detail. This video worked best however in advocating for granular synthesis and for Tardigrain (which I have never bought, I think, because I did not realize its on-screen performance controls were as well-realized as they turn out to be). Thanks for that part in particular. As you may recall, I have been doing my mooing for decades. Cheers to you for having the courage to moo. In moosic we are free, and we bring love when we moo. We can all moo too - it's true, everyone can moo!

Been a minute since I tuned in to your videos, but great job on this one. 👍🏾 Btw, this one is DrumJam (7:55) and still my go to drum app for samples, even though it only functions as a IAA in AUM.

I'm of the same opinion. Yes, there are some sounds which are more easily achieved with a rompler, but I've been fairly strict recently about supporting good quality sound modeling synths instead.

@JakobHaq That’s “DrumJam” at 7:53, not “ThumbJam” by the same developer. (Just in case anyone might be looking for that app) Either way, another wonderfully entertaining video! I use a few romplers every now and then. It’s one of the reasons I upgraded my iPad to one with a terabyte of storage.

Agreed on physical modeling! Less storage used and the sounds are more realistic than samples (IMHO). That said, I do have many romplers and I like the number of sounds, as well as being able to change sounds quickly. But, the reason I really like romplers is that I don't have to modify sounds. I'd rather be recording music than tweaking patches.

What do you think of romplers with deep synthesis like the Korg M1 and Wavestation?

I love your videos! I have a question about connections between iPad Pro and MIDI Controllers. I'm connecting my iPad Pro to a MIDI Controller keyboard (KeyLab61). I'm using one of those white adapters that connects to the iPad with USBC, and has the 3 inputs (a USB connect (to the keyboard), and AUX audio out, and a USBC (to plug in power)). Music apps detect MIDI and it works fine. I bought a 3ft long USBC extension cable because I didn't want the large-ish white adapter just dangling out of the iPad. It supplies power to the MIDI keyboard, but MIDI no longer works. The iPad doesn't detect the MIDI controller anymore. I did a quick scan on the interwebs and they mention that extensions longer than 10ft can have problems, and need to have a boost... but this is a 3ft long extension cord. Any clue what's going on here?

There are so many terrific modeled instrument apps and almost all of them are tiny. Red Animal (Vox Continental organ) 7 MB, VB3m (Hammond organ) 18 MB, Electrorchestra (string machine) 8 MB, Hillman (another great string machine) 7 MB, Pianoteq (acoustic and electric pianos) 55 MB, FreeVibes 9 MB, Model D6 (electric Clavinet) 12 MB. Plus all of the synthesizers too!

About the storage problem, I have solved for that by a combination of uninstalling some apps, as you do, but I also bought an earlier used iPad just to get 128GB of storage. Typically, I have from 50GB to 85GB FREE.

I think I was able to put my own samples in Tardigrain but I can’t find out how to do it anymore. That’s why I use Elsa - it’s right there on the right.
@JakobHaq5 ай бұрын
When you’ve got a preset loaded, you can delete the sample file allready loaded in it with the paper basket icon. After doing that, you have the file import button there instead.

i think romplers are also synths, they only use static samples as oscillators. the rest of it is filters and what follows. Some of them have interesting cross modulation options between the oscilators. its all about how you define 'synthesis'. granular i find not as interesting as other forms of synthesis. it might be nice to do percussion things with granular, but i think atm its a bit of a hype. some mellotron emulations, do indeed use a form of physical modeling and samples. i think thats also 'synthesis'. if a plugin is sample based and has a big library and it sounds great, then its fine because i make music with hardware, and process in software. I work on a computer and storage is not a problem at all. Also high bitrates en depth.

I think that all you named ROMplers are actually SSDers nowadays. ROM = Read Only Memory. None of these apps use actually ROM anymore. So calling them Romplers is more apt nowadays.

and why are you making music on a phone? you know beforehand that storage is going to be a problem, also connectivity. On an ipad i can understand it, and it has more possibilities for storage. i really do not care about the process, for me its about the result and how i come there thats another thing.
