Why I don't use UV Resin anymore

This video explains one of the biggest issues of using UV resin that I wish I'd known before using it on my jewelry.
I show pieces of my personal jewelry that are still ok, but I honestly don't wear those pieces very much. If I wore them more often, they'd be yellow too.
Another major reason that I prefer a 2 part epoxy is that I get a MUCH smoother, nicer finish than with the UV. I also don't have to deal with the warping that is caused from the heat of curing the UV resin.

the yellowed… are still very nice. You notice the difference because you’ve seen the original, but other people, when we are looking at it, we don’t know what was the original color. I learned a long time ago, I’ve been selling jewelry since my 20s, I’m now in my 60s, I sold a lot more mistakes than perfection. Lol. We as artesian’s, always see the flaws… the buyers, don’t notice unless we point it out! I personally learned, if I had 2 to 3 people looking at it and saying oh your resin tarnished or boy is that an ugly color. I pulled the piece. But there was people that bought my flawed items, because they couldn’t figure out how I achieved that color, and they loved the color. Sometimes, people purposely try to achieve that look. I personally liked all your pieces . You make beautiful pieces! Beautiful work💕

Oh yes, everything you have written here, makes tons of sense, heck i couldn't have said it any better myself. I really liked her jewelry pieces, the slightly damaged ones that used to be white are now ivory colored, i love ivory colored jewelry. Also the earrings that had pinkish on one side & more of a salmon color on the other side, could be reversable styles.

It is VERY DEPENDENT on what brand of UV resin you use. Even in the same brand you have to be careful and test them I’ve had good results with Let’s Resin new formula UV. Also the Limon brand in the pink flowers label bottles have not yellowed. Limon brand has a blue flower label version that yellowed very quickly. But the pink flowers ones havent. So far Let’s Resin new formula has done well.

Oh, I agree that the brand has a lot to do with it. But any of them will yellow eventually...UV or epoxy...it's just the nature of resin. Like you said, you can test them out, but then that could potentially be A LOT of wasted money. Personally, I'd just rather stick with an epoxy that won't yellow anywhere near as quickly. I also forgot to mention in the video that I get much better results, a much nicer, smoother, all around better looking surface with epoxy. The fact that I don't have to deal with the warping of my clay that usually comes with UV resin is another plus for me... although, there are ways around the warping of course. ❤️

When I first started out though, I saw EVERYONE (it seemed) in the polymer clay world using the Chinese resin from Amazon, so I did too. I WISH someone had told me this would happen! So many of your pieces are still beautiful. If I didn't know what it looked like before the UV resin yellowed, I would not think anything of it and I would think it was a beautiful tint. The big pendant and the bracelet with the beads that yellowed in the center need a little work, but imho, the rest are still easily sellable.

There is one tip I was given and that’s to add the slightest touch of blue in the resin as this will help with stopping the resin from going yellowing. I just found a picture that I’ve had for 40 years now and the resin has not yellow at all with age, I have no idea what type it is. The only thing I can think of is that it was a bad batch of resin🤔🤔🤔

All resin will yellow over time. Depending on the brand and sun/light exposure. It doesn't matter if it is epoxy or uv resin. The only way to minimize it is not to use resin at all, or find a brand that is the lesser yellowing. I feel that using any products on your clay pieces will eventually have issues over time, too.

This is so sad. And just a thin coat, too! I do solid epoxy resin pieces, and had considered using UV resin to achieve some special effects, or for things like wire flower petals that need to cure quickly, but I never actually did it since I always suspected this would be the case. Like, you literally CAN'T put a UV inhibitor into UV resin because it would interfere with the curing process. Just be careful with what brand of epoxy you use, some definitely have very good UV inhibitors, others, not so much. Do your research. I have heard Art Resin has a good one, though I do not like how soft/bendy it is (that may be fine for coating polymer clay though), after looking at a lot of yellowing comparison videos i settled on Let's Resin brand, for something that is hard but also yellow resistant, and have been very happy with it. But i also had good luck with Pro Marine's resin. One time, a bunch of clear resin flash cured on me in a cup and I decided to just stick the hunk of it in a window, for months, and i could detect barely any yellowing. I also made some snowflakes that i hung in a window for a month or so this winter, and they are fine.

Good info...thank you. Yes, I heard Art Resin was good with the yellowing. I watched a lot of videos with testing & it held up really well. Although, I've noticed a little bit of yellowing on some pieces I made over a year ago. Some people in the comments are saying Art Resin is one of the worst for yellowing. As we say all resin will yellow EVENTUALLY I just assumed that's why the art resin was starting to yellow a tiny bit. Im glad you mentioned the "bendy" of Art Resin. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong because I wasn't expecting that....but I really like the fact that it's flexible. The polymer clay is flexible, so they work well together. I think I'll try the Let's Resin next time since so many people in the comments have recommended both the epoxy & the UV of theirs. Thank you for watching & thank you for your comment. ❤️

@@madebymellyjewelry I have seen some conflicting info on Art Resin, some older videos show it being an absolute champ when it comes to yellowing, other, more recent ones show it yellowing. It may be they changed their formula, or there was just a bad batch, it's hard to say. Art Resin is designed more for fluid art or for an ultra glossy varnish on paintings, hence the name. It is intended to be poured on to canvas in thin layers, so it's bendyness helps it resist cracking, which i could also see being good for polymer clay. It's just I work with resin poured into molds, so wanted something harder. But that doesn't mean bendyness isn't good in other circumstances! there are specific resin formulas for every need.

Yes, any resin, UV or epoxy will eventually yellow. I'm happy that I switched to epoxy because (I forgot to say in the video) I get a much nicer, all around better finish with the Art Resin. I'd prefer it even if UV resin didn't yellow quicker. I just wanted to inform people that might not know that this can happen. Like I said, I knew resin would yellow (when I first started) I just had NO IDEA it would happen so fast. So far though, I do like the Deep Shine for instances where I just can't use epoxy. Honestly though, as my work, experience, & skills progress I'm trying more & more to create designs that I don't need to use resin. Obviously, it still has its place in my work, I'd just rather avoid it all together when I can. Even some of my Art Resin pieces have started to yellow a tiny bit. Like you said, I could test lots & lots of UV resin, but I'm perfectly happy using epoxy resin when I need resin. I like it much better anyway. I think when a lot of people are starting out, they start out with UV resin, as I did because it just seems easier. Once I tried the Art Resin, i realized that (in my opinion) it's far superior to UV resin for many reasons. But...everyone has to decide what works best for them. ❤️

Hi. This was a very insightful video! I recently bought two different brands of uv resin for my clay art and was hearing about resin turning yellow over time, I was wondering if the resin art is not in direct sunlight or by the window will it still yellow? I tested my resin on a random art piece and it's been looking great but I worry since I'm making sculptures for Christmas and I don't want them to turn yellow, especially the white ones. I also noticed theres a uv resin called Mr. Resin which is highly recommended by alot of artists for it's durability and longevity but it is a little pricey. Either way I am taking my chances as long as they are not by the sun.

I'm glad the video was helpful. Yes, resin will yellow... eventually...no matter what. Doesn't matter if it's UV or epoxy, doesn't matter if it's in direct sun or not...it will yellow. Now the speed at which it yellows is a different story. The type of resin, the direct sun, those things will affect the speed at which it happens. Direct sunlight will speed up the process. Also, UV resin will yellow faster than epoxy due to the UV activators in the resin. It's all a give & take. As with most things, you just have to figure out if the benefits outweigh the undesirable effects. It depends on what you're using it for too. Im sure your Christmas sculptures turned out beautiful. Hopefully the resin you used will hold up well over time ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for watching & commenting. I hope you decide to stick around for awhile & subscribe ❤️

Thank you very much 😊 I'm pretty sure that Lisa's Resin will yellow also. I had a small bottle of it once, & it was yellow as soon as I put it on. The bottle was old, but still...that tells me it will probably yellow fairly easily, although I can't say 100%. No, I don't have a video on that bracelet. I made it long before I ever started my channel. I brushed it on with a brush, rotated it under the light as it cured. I put about 2 coats, sanded it smooth, then added the final coat.

Oh Hun let me save you the time n headache of fighting with your resin... I started with Art resin and I was paying the $400 for 2 gallons every like 6 months because I do resin pieces not clay. I had so many of my pieces yellow. I thought maybe because I liked alcohol inks that were green blue n purple that did it. So I incased some pictures n other items in clear. I made a memorial piece of my sister that passed. Everything yellowed. So I did research on KZbin because I don't want people tell me what's good (sponsorships) I wanted to see it for myself. The let's resin is the most clear. Since I switched everything has been so much better. I buy the two part epoxy resin. It's thinner also so less fighting to stir it up. (I make larger batches) it's clear, less bubbles, it stays clear for longer. I haven't had nothing turn yellow since. I'll admit I haven't had nothing in direct sunlight because I had no reason to but I had things in windows n haven't had no problems. It's also cheaper than art resin so you can buy a small batch n put it over so white baked polymer clay n test it before you use it in pieces you put all that effort into. I'm not one to just go with the flow cuz people say but since I bought it I have truly seen a huge difference first hand. I believed art resin at first n bought it because they said it's safe to use, it's food safe, it's non yellowing etc but I've lost a lot due to yellowing n tbh it's not safe to be around it gave me splitting headaches mixing so I had to get a respirator to use it too so that's 2 out of three I found to not be true. You're welcome to continue to do what you want but I thought I'd save you from the headache n hassle. There's a KZbinr that shows testing done n I'll link it too kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6i2kKqAa9WphpIsi=6S_FV3ARD2vnRpd0 I hope this helps...

A good tip that I heard is that adding a little blue dye to the resin will stave off the yellowing. From what I gather in the YT maker scene, it's only the clear resin that's having issues. Anything that was dyed doesn't seem to be having problems even years later. I assume it's working the same way that adding blue to make your whites whiter and your darks darker?

We’re they all made with the same brand of UV? Some artists have no problem with yellowing. I know how disappointing it must be. That last necklace where the resin no longer matched the seed beads would be a significant problem but many others,if you didn’t see the before pics, were a very pretty bone colour. The change seems to mainly affect the white rather than the rest of the colours. Could you try a different brand of white clay or a different colourant?

Any resin left out in sunlight will yellow very quickly, unfortunately... Makes no difference what the brand is, being in strong sunlight continuously like that only accelerates the process. I even tell my clients if they're eg going to a wedding, to watch the amount of time they're in sunlight while wearing (non-UV) resined jewellery. For that reason, outdoor fairs/stalls for any resined work - jewellery or art - is a no-no, I'm afraid. I'm so sorry your lovely stock got ruined. With older art pieces of mine that have deteriorated/yellowed, I run a light flood-coat tinted lilac over the top, which definitely helps. 💜

Yes, even my Art Resin has started to yellow. Many, many people have suggested Let's Resin in the comments. I have some of it arriving today. I've gotten to where 90% of my designs don't require sealing, or they're textured so they look better without a sealer. But sometimes, I just like the glassy look of the resin...& my customers seem to like it too. I still have no interest in using UV resin unless I need it on a curved surface. Not only because of the yellowing, but the warping from the heat, & I just get an all around better finish with an epoxy resin. If I can't find an epoxy that holds up better against yellowing, I'll just stick with designs that don't need it. I hardly ever use paints, powders, etc anyway. I generally prefer to do all my artwork with just the colored clay. Although, sometimes it's fun to use those surface treatments. Its just a catch 22, I think 🤷 Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️

I didn't even own alcohol inks at that time...now, I've had them a long time & still haven't used them. 😂 A lot of people have mentioned the Jdiction brand, but I haven't tried it. Still, it will yellow eventually...it just may take it a really long time. Any resin will....that's just resin. I love the way the resin looks, but I'm trying not to use it unless I actually need it. Most of the pieces in the video didn't actually need it...I just used it because I liked the look. Thanks for watching 💗

I wonder, is there possibility to use two part epoxy resin for coating 3D objects such as flowers when working in thin layers?

@@sabinalutterova1520 hi 👋 Ya know, that's a good question, but I don't think you could. I just won't set up quickly enough & I think most of it would just run off even if it's in really thin layers. Ive never tried it though, so I can't say for sure. I just resin as an accent for my polymer clay, which is my primary art medium. Some of the actual resin artists might have tried this, but I don't know. It would be a cool experiment for sure! 😃

2 part resin reacts badly over time with polymer clay. After a few months, it breaks down and the piece becomes sticky
@madebymellyjewelry
@madebymellyjewelry Жыл бұрын
Did this actually happen to you? I'm wondering if the resin wasn't mixed properly? Or if someone just told you this, perhaps they were misinformed? LOTS of people have used epoxy with polymer clay for years with no problems. I have pieces that I coated with the Art Resin epoxy & they're well over a year old. So, it didn't happen with my resin. Please let me know if you have experienced this first hand, & if so, what resin you used. Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️

YES!!!! Everyone uses UV like it's the greatest thing ever...it's NOT. I think a lot of people start out using UV resin just because it seems easier & less intimidating than an epoxy...that's why I started with UV, anyway. So...tell me....what is this Jdiction you speak of???? Thanks for watching & commenting...I'll hope you'll subscribe ❤️

Ok, so I see that Jdiction is a brand of resin. Ive never heard of it. I'm assuming you use their 2 part epoxy? I'm definitely going to watch some videos on it, & i may try that one. How long have you used it? Have you had any yellowing yet at all? Thanks for mentioning it 😉

Jdiction does a UV resin and I have no troubles with it at all, for curing, For curing problems, UV has to be cured on the front and the back in transparent molds, and don't touch for 5 min or so! hope that helps. and the only yellowing I get is from cheaper UV resin, never JDiction. Their high viscosity is the best I have ever used. My stuff sits in the sun at shows.

Many people don't realize that a lot of UV resin is depending on the wattage of the lamp that are using, many of the Brand's out today require at least 36 w. It also requires using clear or transparent bold and curing on both sides before diemolding and also working very small thin layer... Many people approach using UV resin like epoxy and try to for thicker quarter inch pieces and often wonder why it doesn't are well and warps. Let's resin and JDiction both make outstanding Cuvee resins make outstanding UV resin that yours nicely and will not yellow quickly.

So what can one use? 😮
@madebymellyjewelry
@madebymellyjewelry 10 ай бұрын
Well, there's several things you can use instead. It all depends on the look you're going for. For the same look, a 2 part epoxy resin can be used. Liquid polymer clay can look similar to resin. Water based varnishes can be used, like varathane. There are special varnishes for polymer clay made by the clay companies. Renaissance Wax is another good choice. One more thing that I know of is floor wax. Like Pledge Revive It. The only thing with it is that you have to be careful with isopropyl alcohol...it will remove the floor wax. Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️

The whole RESIN discussion should start with one critical question. Knowing you're only going to use this thing you made for a certain amount of time, how much longer would it sit in a landfill before going back to the Earth? Or ask yourself, with 144 tons of new plastic waste being produced in the USA every year, just how much of that land-fill space do you want to waste on hobbies? 😢😢😢. Your grandkids are the ones who will be dealing with the plastic or 'resin' 'polymer ANYTHING'; PROBLEM. It will be your families problem, not mine. Plastic is here forever, once you mix it up. 😢😢😢

I make & design quality jewelry pieces that will last my customers MANY, MANY years. What I do is not a "HOBBY". What I do is art, and it's a business. That art & business are how I make my living. This video was not about landfills, waste, etc. This video was intended to educate other artist & hobbyist what can happen with some UV resins that MANY people use. Last but not least...it will NOT be my grandchildren's, nor their grandchildren's "problem" because they don't & will never exist, because I was never able to have children....so thanks very much for insulting my art & then stabbing a knife in a sore spot.
