Wow. I've never heard of such a story of a slave. Usually when we are told stories of the history of any particular slave, it's all bad. Sometimes they die on the plantation, sometimes they leave and go north. Sometimes go south to a small community of other runaways. But your gramps _really_ lived the American dream to the fullest, before it was even called that. Amazing. Reparations is just pity money, not to mention pandering and keeping us even more enslaved to being lazy and depending on other people's money to survive.

I'm of German ancestry, perhaps Germans should receive repairations as well because of how Germans were treated during the American Civil War when they refused to fight for the Democrat controlled south. Or perhaps for how German heritage in the United States was systematically stripped away and German-Americans were sent to internment camps during the First and Second World wars. How about the Asian people who looked Japanese and their treatment as well? Hell, if we're going to give people repairations, perhaps the left wing should go and apologize for the trail of tears as well as every other atrocious law passed to benefit only their elites. Every single policy in United States history that has hurt the minority population has sat on the desk of Democrat presidents. And the only Reason that LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act was because he knew that if he didn't, the Republicans would and the Democrat party would never win an election again.

As I've been told, the civil war was not truly about slavery, atleast not in the beginning. I recall it starting over states' rights, the south didn't want Lincoln to make slavery illegal throughout the whole country. To try and keep the country together, Lincoln said he wouldn't ban slavery. But when he was elected, the southern states seceded. This is where the states' rights come in. The south believed that states have the right to secede if they believe the federal government is tyrannical, or something of the sort. The north believed otherwise and so the war began over the right of states to secede. This continued for awhile. Eventually, Britain began to notice there were problems with their cotton supply. At this time, Britain's textile mills were HUGE, they were the main thing at the time. So, when the south's cotton supply was being hindered by a war, Britain felt the need to step in to preserve one of its largest industries. This is where Lincoln used his political knowledge of this to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed slaves in all Unions states and captured confederate states. The Proclamation seems useless if it only freed already becoming free northern slaves from slavery. This is the genius of it, though. The proclamation made the war about slavery, something Britain had already gotten rid of, making it immoral to help the slave-keeping south. There you have it, the Civil War not about slavery (in the beginning).
@detectiveofrivia3115 жыл бұрын
Sterling Gjesvold the war on states rights was an issue touted by the south only after they lost the war. There is clear documented evidence of confederate leaders, such as Jefferson Davis, only writing about this after the war. Proponents of secession would go to town halls throughout the South rallying states to join the cause so they could keep slavery. They did not mention states rights. This was revisionist thinking on the South’s part to make themselves look better in the aftermath of defeat.

In a world of "reparations" every descended of Americans that never owned a slave would have to pay taxes for this. Every descendant of Americans that died to abolish slavery would have to pay. People who never were slaves would receive the benefits of what can only be called a policy based on skin color. Can't imagine anything more racist.

The reparations movement is in direct opposite of the Equal rights movement of the 60's and the ideology of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
@douglassfrederick3814 жыл бұрын
It actually isn't. Not even MLK believed that a group of Americans that basically had been guaranteed poverty by government actions for generations could make but so much progress w/o some form of redress (Civil Rights is just ceasing the harm, not redress). Especially given all of the wealth-building tools handed to other Americans during that same time that black Americans did not have access to.
@pst7024 жыл бұрын
@@douglassfrederick381 waaaaah you're breaking my heart...gimme a break...reparations doesn't solve the problem (read your history)...fact: most caucasians today are direct descendants from the mass immigration movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century...the actual percentage of caucasians directly link to great grandparents who were around the time of slavery or even colonial times is relatively small in numbers...reparations, be serious....most people are opposed to the idea on many counts...even a percentage of African Americans oppose the idea based on the definition that it's DEMEANING...like affirmative action..the premise basically states that a African American ISN'T qualified to do a job so the government steps in to FORCE institutions to remedy the system by the use of tokenism...in reality, there ARE many African Americans who are qualified for many jobs or have the ability to be in a institution of higher learning...affirmative action is really tokenism...institutions are LAZY, let me repeat that key word....LAZY in looking for the right qualified African American for the job or placement in a college or university...tokenism is just grabbing any Tom, Dick or Harry to get the government or organizations off their backs...that has been proven time and time again. African Americans are qualified for any job in this country, unfortunately because of this neanderthal practice the really qualified individuals are left out...the ideology means well on some part but the reality is that it hurts more than it helps.

@@pst702 We're talking about both slavery and Jim Crow here. It's irrelevant to my point, but the immigrants you mentioned were here during the Jim Crow regime. It's irrelevant because it was the government in the wrong for upholding and even spreading Jim Crow to all regions of the country. Nothing I said had anything to do with Affirmative Action, which was an anti-discrimination measure. To the affect that it even exists today, there's virtually no data to support that American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) are even the primary beneficiaries. The bottom line is that even post-slavery ADOS were both literally robbed of property & rights and robbed of the American Dream that was ultimately opened up to all of the immigrants you mentioned. There is no group of immigrants that had every level of government passing laws that guaranteed their disproportionate impoverishment for two centuries. There is no other group that was locked out of the wealth-building social benefits for at least 90% of that time either. That easily amounts to trillions of dollars. That is what I was talking about. It's one thing if you don't believe trillions of dollars of wealth matter. But if, like most people, you believe it does, you'd have to conclude that this is a problem. And yes, various forms of redress could definitely resolve this issue. For example, if the social policies with respect to housing that locked out ADOS could help create the largest middle class expansion in the US, it's kind of ridiculous to believe that something similar specifically for ADOS could not help now.

I love this video. It's amazing, in a time where some are so quick to call others racist that people don't see exactly how racist things like affirmative action and reparations are? How can you expect that people will be treated as equals if they don't have to perform at the same rate as others to get to the same place?

The Civil War was not about slavery, it was about states vs. Federal rights. Lincoln three the slavery issue in at the last minute.
@cojones85185 жыл бұрын
Many tried after the Civil War to pass "Forty Acres and a Mule" laws, but Lincoln himself was against it. Most of the proposals wanted to seize the plantations and turn the land over to the freed slaves. Lincoln felt that it would cause a lot of resentment in the South and possibly a new war, in the states that were already trying to pick up the pieces after the war. Not only that, but a lot of the South's economy was built on farming and taking that much land would have destroyed any hope of the southern states rebuilding.

appletonrd Are you saying no one deserves reparations? That position makes no sense because they’ve been given multiple times. The differences I’m references are that, reparations for A.D.O.S. are owed by America not Italy, he should take that up with Italy. Secondly, reparations for A.D.O.S. are owed for much more than just slavery and some issues are kind of modern not a 100 years ago.

Additionally white immigrants faced MASSIVE racism after they immigrated, especially Irish, polish, Italians, jews. The population of the nation was tiny then, there was no reason to limit immigration, and no white person claims that their ancestors weren’t immigrants!! Immigration controls are _not racist._ Europeans still have to wait to come here too.
