I had a similar conversation with my sensei when I started my koryu sword style. he flat out told me "You will never be a Samurai, the Samurai are an extinct warrior social class and there are no more Daimyo to serve let alone you have no Japanese Samurai bloodline lineage. however you can be a "Bushi", (I asked what that was and he replied...) it means Warrior in Japanese, the Samurai before ever being called Samurai were called Bushi during the Heian and Kamakura periods. So you may never be a Samurai and kill anyone or own vast land but you can aim to be a warrior.. a Bushi" that conversation forever changed my perspective on this stereotypical desire to "be a Samurai". it makes sense. the Budo spirit or Martial Way is in all us Budoka(Japanese Martial Artists) and we don't need to be Samurai to still be a Bushi. If anything we Bushi are the legacy of the Samurai.⚔️🏹🥋

I think your interpretation of bushi is wonderful. It isnt wrong either, because meanings and concepts are subjected to an individuals perception. How someone interprets it shows our inner caracter and core beliefs. At least in my opinion anyways. 😂 What you are doing truly has meaning Shogo. What better purpose than to better ones culture while also preserving it and passing it on to those who come next?

In the documents written in late Heian and Kamakura periods you can even see civil servants (as opposed to warriors) being called samurai because they served their higher-ups. In that respect, Ōe no Hiromoto was a samurai to his lord (first the Chōtei in Kyoto and then Minamoto no Yoritomo), despite not being a fighting man at all.

Have you ever investigated the life of Ueshiba Morihei? Many would say he is the greatest modern Bushi. His teachings, biography and life story lends credence to the claim. Ueshiba Morihei is definitely an exemplar of stopping the spear rather than propagating it, but from a place of strength. It's a bit startling that foreigners seem to admire Ueshiba O Sensei more than Japanese people.

These days, it'd be more of being a Bushi Ronin, as we are all all masterless in the modern day.

If bushi is a broadterm for warrior then what does sushi stand for?

Thank you Shogo for giving me the background knowledge to understand that absolutely unhinged Clickhole article about Jughead from Archie and times he contradicted the central tenets of Bushido.

Would Bu mean Martial? Swordplay and footwork are part of martial training, I feel like that fits based on your verbiage
