What do you mean by "messing up the commit history"? What does it mean to fix the mistake at the top of the commit stack?

So let's say I made a camel casing mistake in "commit X", but instead of fixing that mistake in commit X and replacing it within, I create a new commit called "commit Y" which fixes those mistakes. Now the history is messed up in the sense that the correction will not show in "commit X" itself where the mistake was made rather it will show in "commit Y" which is very confusing for whoever is reading.
