From Pakistan to Google & Facebook (as a Software Engineer)

My journey from a student in Pakistan to a software engineer at Google was not an easy one. We have seen Shafiqa Iqbal (a data engineer from Lahore) join Google, so in this video, I go over how I transitioned from a high school student in Pakistan to a software engineer at Google. 1) Research future jobs and see their requirements 2) Instead of focussing on grades only, focus mainly on doing extra practical courses and make your own projects and put them on your CV 3) Apply to Internships (preferably via references), focus on start-ups first OR do a group project with a group of others in your field if you can't get into the Internship

HI! I really want to be a software engineerar at FAANG. So I started my research that how I could apply for those companies from pakistan. But unfortunately I couldnot find anything or anyone except you and shafiqa Iqbal .But in your case you were in US and that,s how you were able to apply and Shafiqa herself got an offer from Google. So at first, I was dissapointed that there is no offices of these companies in pakistan and there is no way through which i can apply for them. But as they were my dream companies I found an alternative to reach my goal. Now I am a undergraduate student (BSCS) working on my profile so that I can get a fully funded scholarship in US. So after going to US I will apply for FAANG ..So today again I rewatched your video and I am happy that you journey maps with the roadmap I have in my mind towards the completion of my goals. Big Tech companies don’t usually differentiate on whether you have done software engineering or computer science. I have never heard of software engineering as a major in the US. Also big tech companies usually don’t care about your major as long as you have the skill. My manager at Google was a civil engineering major.

This is not a big deal to get job in Google while you can manage to travel to the U.S for undergraduate studies. I have seen a lot of Indian youtubers who get into the Google while studying totally in their own country without any international exposure

Heyyy!! Really motivated after seeing this video. I am currently studying at LUMS and now i have to chooose my major. The only thing i am worried about is that computer science is very difficult or maybe i will be unable to do it . Or even after that there is a long way which perhaps land me job at google , Microsoft. What are your incentives on this ??? Like the exceptionally low amount of scholarships and visas /jobs at big tech for Pakistanis?

Aoa. Why do you feel like computer science is difficult? In my opinion you should first see if programming is something that is of interest to you. If it is then studying computer science and acing a few theory courses should not be too hard (especially considering the vast resources out there to help you study it, for example youtube). You can definitely try to land a job at these companies right after getting your bachelors but it would be hard. (Not impossible though). One route that a lot of Lums student take is that they go for Masters in the US and they end up getting the big tech job that they want. It’s actually not that complicated to get a job at Big Tech, there are a lot of Pakistanis working in big tech, its just that most never decide to make content.

Both of them are good to learn. Remember once you understand the basic infrastructure and concepts its super easy to shift between technologies. I worked with React during my entire time at my university, but when I got hired at Google I have been working with Angular. It was super easy to learn Angular after I had learnt react. It would be super easy to shift to Node or vice versa if you know either one of them properly.

Does FAANG allow working remotely? or you need to be on site.

For the average person you have to be in the office 3 days a week. You can apply for an exception and go work fully remote though. So it is possible. One of the best things about FAANG and most tech companies is that they allow 1 month of remote work from “anywhere”. So you can even work 1 month from abroad

Brother my family could not afford good universities in Pakistan let alone the US. US universities provide financial aid which helped my cause a lot. I was on 100% financial aid and scholarship

I am studying in pucit in data science for 2 years and I am unable to understand what I have read in 2 years , there are some stupid objects like calculus ,maths, linear algebra , motalea Pakistan , physics and main subjects are only 2(from 1990's what they are teaching are still teaching the same) it's literally their business they have nothing to deal with our career

I went on scholarship and financial aid. About $10,000 worth of scholarships and $60k worth of financial aid from the university. Financial aid means that based on your needs the university decided to assist you accordingly. They judge that based on your family’s tax returns.

I learnt data structures through my university course but there are several free resources that you can learn from. I would recommend you to check out the MIT playlist if you have time because that is great otherwise you can also buy a cheap course on udemy for data structures or just learn them from KZbin. There is a instructor called "Abdul Bari" who saved my entire data structure course at University.

Right now I'm studying ics in Pakistan, 1st year as in 9th 10th i was forced to study biology bcz my parents are doctors. So i noticed one thing that the course of ics 1st year is super outdated they are teaching pentium and some old amd processors in 2022 and things like floppy drives, Cd roms etc in short super outdated course.
