Why I fly Kitfox - FreedomFox Walk Around

I've had a bunch of comments asking technical questions about my Kitfox, as well as a few requests to do a walk around of the plane so I went ahead and did so. Fair warning: This video is more of a technical rundown than an entertaining flying video.
Couple things I forgot to mention... I didn't build my plane, I purchased it used, so I can't really speak to the build process, although I do hope to build one myself in the future! The plane weighs 850lbs empty and has a 1550lb gross weight (not registered SLSA).
I apologize for the blurry shots in parts of this video, it seems my camera was being a little temperamental today.

Thanks for sharing your video with us! I was a design engineer for SkyStar Aircraft from 1993 until 2004 and helped design the Series 5. I later was the engineering manager for CubCrafters and worked on the original Carbon Cub. I would take the Kitfox over the Carbon Cub any day. It has a more efficient airfoil, and your flight controls are much more responsive. I look forward to seeing your plane in person sometime.

David Snell any advice you can share for an aerospace engineering student?
@cptzoom
@cptzoom 6 жыл бұрын
I got my degree from Embry-Riddle, and there were many late nights while struggling with a homework problem or project that I just thought I should give up. My advice to engineering students is to work hard and persevere. No matter how hard it may be at times, just don't give up. Completing my degree has allowed me to have a very enjoyable and rewarding career (25 years now). One of my favorite quotes is from William Boeing. He once said, "My firm conviction from the start has been that science and hard work can lick what appear to be insurmountable difficulties.” Best of luck to you, Andrew!

Yeah.. I had nights.. nay.. MONTHS of anguish but getting done was all worth it (2 1/2 years of delay LATER) and have had a life of adventure and stability (my degree is EE). Yep. Work hard, persevere, lay off the partying and distractions, get help, show the Prof you give a dang, and that'll get you through some narrow scrapes, at least it did for me.

I haven't flown in over 40 years but back in the day (mid 1960's), getting my Private SEL, I flew several of my required cross-countries in a Cessna 140 (tailwheel). Once I got the hang of it, ALL my landings in a tricycle gear improved due to the tailwheel experience. And I pulled off some really short landings in that Cessna 140. I would really have enjoyed getting into the kind of flying you do. I did several landings at the dirt strip at Timmonsville, SC, and numerous times in and out of the grass strip at Westwego, LA. It always felt really good being off the pavement.. Keep the videos coming. This 74-year-old aviation buff is enjoying them all.

Trent, you are a blessing to aviation. It's talented people like you who inspire people to go out and become pilots. This might be asking a lot, but if you could find the time to do it, l'm sure a lot of viewers, including myself, would like to know how much all your mods cost and where they could get them done. Got my license in 1965 in a 1947 Fleet Canuck in Windsor, Ontario Canada where l'm from. At 74, l'm now living in Kimberley, British Columbia with my 32 year old wife. And, because of you, l'm in the market for a Kitfox. The world needs more people like you. You are truly an Aviation Ambassador !!!

Good video. I have a kitfox 4 with 100 HP ULS Rotax engine. My power to weight is great. My plane does have a spring gear so landing short is a challenge. My Kitfox has all the clean airfoils which makes it a go some where airplane rather than stohl. I cruise at 110 mph at 4800 rpm. 115 mph at 5000 rpm with the angle I have set on my three bladed warp drive prop. To try to land short is pilot technique. One bounce and you float. If I keep nose up with a slow hard slip then occasionally I due it right. Sometimes I come in with full flapperons, trimed to nose up , little power and stall right at touch down. I just can't do it every time. I thought about changing gear, but in south west ohio we have plenty of grass strips that I land in safely so I just enjoy what I have. Thanks for your video's because I can relate to what your saying. Stay safe..

Really love your videos, Trent! Thanks for sharing all the modifications you've put into your kitfox - that's super awesome of you! I definitely agree with you on the Kitfox vs Carbon Cub debate. Another point to note is the Carbon Cub has cruise speed of 96 MPH! It's super slow compared to the Kitfox! The plane just doesn't have enough advantages to justify the $200,000 more money you need to bring to the table to buy one vs a Kitfox. The Kitfox is a more well-rounded aircraft and pretty cheap. It's the definite winner for me.

Trent, you have been a motivation for me, inspiration will come later. A engineer friend of mine who is heavily into aviation advised "aircraft ownership is a financial black hole". I am inclined to agree with him from his argumentative perspective. I received an inheritance which was not divided uniformly among the family. I wish to pass along what assets are left after my life to assist family most close to me. I feel guilty projecting those assets toward a selfish end. However, the flying passion still is there. Many questions remain to be answered before I take the plunge.
