As I watched this I was really encouraged to keep going! I'm on a similar path as an illustrator and writer, and just turned 50 this year too! Pop culture is great for helping us to "see" what works, what resonates for others and how stories are told. But if we hang in there long enough, we reach this point of self-actualization, our creative energy booms and our visions grow. There's nothing better than making our own ideas happen. Keep going Rene! (I will too, heheh)

Thank you, Eric! I'm happy to hear you are encouraged to write and draw as well. Yes, bringing our ideas to life on the blank page can become a point of self-actualization. That "creative energy" is crucial to keep us going! Keep it up!!!

I've just recently got into doing fanart commissions, focused on tmnt characters. Mostly because I need more sources of income. I do enjoy creating these and seeing them go to appreciative owners but I also try to set aside time to do work on my own, original characters and comic book. And also why I started my own youtube channel, to try and build a community that might support my journey. I'm following your journey for inspiration to not forget about my own I.P.'s Just hope I can finish and publish my own comic someday.

That is great that you can do commissions for extra income. Nothing at all wrong with that. Definitely keep up with creating work for yourself too!

As an independent writer, I’m having fun writing about the characters I created and exploring the world they live in. I love Spider-Man/peter Parker but as I mature I stray away from the direction that my life long favorite characters are going in. Now my own characters are my favorite. I own everything I do and with all the long nights and hard work in put in, I’m loving the direction I’m going with them. My next thing is to start promoting myself and share what I love with the world
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
That's great, very similar to my journey as well with regards to the characters I've created. Taking nothing away from Spidey or Peter, but I love to hear that you are putting in the work for your own characters. It's definitely hard work as you say, and promoting just adds to the layer of work needed. In the end, you gotta love what you're creating to sustain any of it.

@@ReneArreolaArt thanks for responding to my comment. Yes the hard work to market your own creation is definitely there but compared to slaving away at my 9-5, I’m having fun with my own project and learning something new every time. I believe that as long as an independent creator is genuine and puts his love and passion into what he creates, people will see that and support. Keep up the good work.

Maybe they are just hobbyists and it isn't their primary source of income or career path
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
@@kidcoyoteanarchy You know, I think it may be alot like musicians who play in bars to a certain extent. Obviously, there a many types of bands and the music they play, but it comes down to original or covers. Whether it's either, the fun is just playing and getting up on stage. Sometimes they don't make much money. But, the ability to play before a live audience is maybe energizing? I can't say for sure, as I am surely not a musician. But there may be a similarity in the approach of being a hobbyist as you say. It's all good to me. Just get more people being creative in whatever their art is, and being positive about it :)

I think it's just easier for some. Creating your own IP is very time consuming and takes a lot of soul searching on what you want your identity as an artist to be. I say that because that's the position I'm in. Fan art, the design/aesthetic is already laid out for you.
@no.1spidey-fan1823 ай бұрын
Cause writing and being a visual artists are two VERY different things. Lets look at music. Just cause someone is an expert intrumentalist...does NOT mean they have the ability to write songs...let alone write GOOD songs😂
@GodLovesComics3 ай бұрын
It's totally understandable as to the tug of war between commissions (which bring in instant money) as opposed to focusing on the long game which is IP. Obviously even hugely successful professional artists often try to juggle both. I also don't think that you have to sacrifice submitting samples to publishers, because effectively your IP can be the sample.
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
Agreed, I often see some of the pro's showing some of their commissions online. Mahmud Asrar is one that immediately springs to my mind; I've seen a bunch of some pre-con orders for commissions on X (twitter) over the last few years. Great work and actually one of my favorite artists. And it's awesome that he supplements his income that way. As for submitting to publishers, I suppose trying to submit my work is an option, but one that I honestly haven't thought about since the advent of POD. Although, you never know ;)

Very inspiring video. Im in this limbo phase, I want to do so much my own chacaretes story but, I sometimes need to make faster money and fan art is the easiest way to do it. But, it cosumes time that I could be investing in my own characters and thats let me crazy sometimes.
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
I hear you. I'm the same. It seems in my head, there's this mental thing where I don't feel 'legit' unless I've done pro work or drawing established characters because everyone knows who Marvel and DC characters are. Nobody knows what my stuff is about, I made it up all myself, so it must not really count for much. And the desire/need to earn a living is very real, of course. It's the constant struggle of an artist that realizes that he or she could be investing their own energies into something that really excites them. If one is excited to draw commissions, then that's all that matters. If someone wants to focus on their own worlds, that's great too. Doing both, that to me is badass!!

@@ReneArreolaArt That's Totally true.
