All your points are valid. But. And hear me out here, it's working. This arc, from his retirement to current release, seems to be about his naivety, and his growth as a person, not as a boxer. As a boxer, he has changed, a whole lot. What you didn't mention is that he is still in essence the same person on the inside, and that person is basically a child. Right now, his girlfriend is tearing herself up and losing the plot and he is going to have to learn how to understand someone else. Shes trapped because he is oppo, and he will keep his word, and he even believes it, but she can see the effect it has on him, the real effort hes putting in, and is lost in her own trap, unable to admit (yet) that shes made a mistake. He has started working at the gym, helping out his mates from the corner, and again he needs to grow up and learn to understand people and to acknowledge their flaws as a weakness instead of making excuses for them to be as successful as he wants to be. It's a real growth potential that he wasn't going to get while he was training. And working. And still training while hes working. Which brings me to my last point Ippo IS broken. He is a monster in the gym and on the track, and rightly so. But it's broken him. The coach has no idea that ippo is taking all that he can dish out, which is a very calculated and strategic regime of exercise, and piling hours a day of more and more training at extreme levels. And ippo thinks he needs to do this because he needs to prove himself, to make the coach happy. The coach has no idea. Go back. Read all his after hours work. People know he pushes himself close to fights, but they have no idea that he never stops, ever. From extra runs in the mornings, to his i think two or three times going out for Road work while hes at the gym, to more roadwork on the way home, and an extra run after dinner. He runs for his high intensity roadwork more than twice the amount of anyone else at that gym. And that's not including any of the other things he does. His body finally gave up on him is exactly what happened. What has changed now is that he still does all that extra, only now he has had a decent rest from training, and what he does now is 'just' the extra. He is now doing roughly the amount of work the coach believed him to be doing while he was actively boxing. The coach comes back in the last chapter , and tests ippo by asking him to help him warm up. Ippo falls right back into their old routine, only now, as he warms up and the coach tells him to push it for a big finish, the coach cant keep up... the genius coach who knows this boxer better than anyone and can read him like a book, and still actively trains takamura, cant. keep. up. But hes still ippo, and he wont break that promise. He wont even think to ask her to reconsider giving him permission, because he doesn't know how to communicate. A very long running theme in this manga has been of him taking in what people say, and internalizing it, and figuring out an answer that often isn't what people expected, and just somehow assuming that the other person just knows what hes thinking or what's going on, and that they know best. And they assume that because he doesn't ask questions, that he understood not only what they mean but why they said it.

Agreed. That's why i never give up with this shonen. Because i know Ippo will comeback in the ring. He simply need pass this line and grow up by stopping to be naive and kind with anyone. Like you know... When he finally snap out by the fault of his pupils by fighting outside of the ring. The face he made by bitch slapped the guy... That wasn't human at all... And i would like this face again, but this time. When he will finally be ready to face Ricardo Martinez in the world ring... I would like to see Ricardo scared the f out of Ippo. Like the time when Eiji scared Ricardo to death with his Heartbreak Shot. (Only in the anime and not in the manga.) I'd like to see Ricardo's face to be affraid against Makunouchi Ippo.

Allow me to shed the light on why Ippo lost. When Takamura drew the line that Ippo hasnt yet crossed, I knew what he needed to progress. The fight he lost was because he didnt cross the line, nothing else. The line, is the monstrous nature Takamura spoke of. The ability to give it all of your violence and monstrous nature to destroying your opponent. Re-read with this in mind and all of the characters dialogue and Ippos actions make scene. Even Sendo said that Ippos fight was over on account of the steam comming off Ippo, as Sendo has crossed this line as he showed in his previous fight, he had no idea Ippo would hold back or miss because he couldnt bring that much harm with his new weapons to another living person. Even all of Takamuras subtle hostility makes sense in this light. As he knew that Ippo was wasting his time. I predict based on the story outside of Ippo that Sendo will fall in his next fight or even lose his life, regardless this will reawaken Ippo and allow him to comit to crossing Takamuras line. Time will tell.

ippo's having 2nd thoughts atm..all through out the series ippo didn't develop the mentality to cross that line where monsters reside like takamura said.focused too much on his dempsey that he forgot to see the forest not just the tree, there are references of these shown in the recent manga where he look up the stars.maybe the desperation and realization of his 3rd defeat will unleash the monster that is currently developing inside him (he's still wearing those weights, manage to draw straight lines whilst wearing it to the shock of umezawa). as frustrating as the 3rd loss is, im not gonna walk out on this not when its only the 4th quarter and the clock still isnt zero :)

This isn't my theory but I read it somewhere on a thread. A guy said he thinks maybe the couch will pass away, that will impact Takamura mentally and emotionally and eventually, he will lose and the act of losing would crush him since in his mind he was invincible and had never lost a fight. He then retires abruptly. Some time will pass and Takamura will end up talking Ippo into giving it another shot while also becoming his coach, Takamura being an actual boxing Genius will be able to guide Ippo in a different direction, to draw out some part of his abilities he never tapped in to.

While I agree the pacing is terrible, I do not believe it is the fault of the writer. Hajime No Ippo isn't very popular in comparison to the recent explosion of other popular sports anime, and so it isn't released nearly as often. I also believe Hajime No Ippo is the perfect sports anime BECAUSE it's so unconventional. We expect it to follow Shonen logic, but I don't think it's a Shonen. In my eyes, it's strictly a sports anime/manga, and tells the stories of the world of boxing, which IS filled with heartbreaks and unsatisfying endings and upsets. Some of the best forms of media are ones with very negatively emotional endings. Even so, I don't believe that Ippo's story will end on a low note. The mangaka is a real life boxing manager and second who's seen every boxing story play out with his very eyes, and the fear and pressure of coming back, not letting down the coach, not letting down his peers, not letting down Takamura who warned him not to come back, not letting down Kumi and not letting down himself could have gotten to him, turning his fears of punch drunk into real symptoms. I think that'd be a very interesting and real direction for the plot to go.
@Navarchil6 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree! I have to say that giving HnI a satisfactory ending will be much, much harder now that it's gotten off the shonen stereotype, but the payoff will be amazing if Morikawa pulls that off. So far so good(~chap 1336)

@talex38444 жыл бұрын
Man I hate to tip the balance of likes-dislikes to negative, and I understand your frustration. But your idea that 1. watching Ippo train someone else would be boring is pretty flawed considering that Hajime no Ippo has NEVER been about just Ippo. Not from the first chapters. Some of the best arcs of the show and manga are sometimes entirely unrelated from Ippo's next fight, and checking out on the end of the story because a chunk of it isn't about Ippo himself boxing feels kind of disingenuous. 2. Ippo and Kumi CAN ABSOLUTELY resolve their subplot in an emotionally gratifying way. Sometimes the desires of people who love each other come into conflict and if (when) Ippo decides to box again I would LOVE to see what happens because that would only be bad story telling if someone actually did something strictly out of character that isn't justified through growth. And I know that this is kind of through the gift of hindsight, but I'm VERY satisfied with three explanation for why Ippo's boxing suffered. Why? Because it happened to me. I was always a good wrestler but I actually came back from knee surgery better than ever because I took a prolonged break where I analyzed my approach mentally but focused on physical recovery. And that's the true beauty of Hajime no Ippo, not that it's realistic or emotional but that *it's realistic to the emotions in the struggle for combat athlete glory and living life in general*. You win. You lose. Sometimes you lose so badly you feel like you have to quit. But if you keep moving forward in some way, no matter how small, things will put themselves together in front of you. I'm glad Ippo quit, and I'm beyond excited to see him KILL when he gets back in the ring.

Ippo’s biggest issue was that he didn’t give himself any time to recuperate from his ridiculous training regime, and that broke him when it mattered most. I think part of his development as a character now will be learning his limits and knowing when he’s pushing himself too far. He needs to slowly build himself up over time, going full steam ahead is no longer working. He’ll come back, this isn’t his first loss.

This is a good discussion. I mean its sort of funny when people speak against the formula but when a shounen diverges from what is expected and 180s; it hits way too hard. Fans cannot accept it because they are invested into the positive themes of a shounen and as much as they speak cynically about it; the general consensus is obvious and is the correct themes to push. It is what one ultimately wants to see but they also hypocritically speak against it all the same. Then they attempt to justify by speaking vague reasoning like how it should've been told or paced better; not understanding that they themselves have no idea how that specifically could be done and is not the reason they feel so empty. Take out the semantics. It is because of the above. The themes and characters they have come and love took an unpredictable turn that went tragically opposite to its once noble, optimistic roots. A true tragedy is heart breaking. Anything less and it is just bittersweet. It means there is still hope or good to be found out of it. In a way, if this is how it ends; Ippo is quite the tragedy. Its a tragic underdog story which is very rare to see. Ippo has always been about perseverance, determination, never giving up, the meaning of strength, hard work. That is how to get to the top. I've always complained about Ippo's style in just bulldozing his way through with disregard and taking headshots that looks like he was killed by them. How he has very little technique when it comes to dodging and just getting hammered to get in. His style is mike tyson but contrary to belief, mike was exceptionally fast for a heavyweight and weaves through many hits. Turns out the author went an unexpected route of realistic consequences from ippo's lack of technique and he came out punch drunk. That's very ballsy and goes against everything that the series has established thematically since its humble conception. It is empty, unsatisfying, and dead like a real tragedy is. A bittersweet ending would be like if Deku, in his "madness" to the pursuit of the greatest heroic ideal (as nighteye points out) has taken him on a path of self destruction as it has been laid out; and he becomes crippled by the end. Having to relinquish the ability OFA to a successor for the next generation to maintain the pillar of peace once more. He becomes the greatest hero in his legacy alone while he himself retires from the world of heroes.
@Exoneos6 жыл бұрын

Seeing how the writer and artist use to be a second and coach in boxing I understand this route. Like you said Ippo is the average athelete, but the only thing stopping him is his mental fears. RemixZX It’s not that she lacks character development it’s that she doesn’t want him to box. Kumi has opinions on her own and it takes TWO to compromise. She shouldn’t just agree to everything he does with no question if kumi is giving apart of something she doesn’t like which is letting him talk and do stuff about boxing now even though she doesn’t want to ippo has to give apart of himself. Meaning he can’t box anymore. If he breaks his promise and boxes again than kumi needs someone who will treat her better

This is what all world contenders should do after a loss realistically. Take a break to physically, mentally, and emotionally recover. Some people need more time to unlearn what failed them and most never really fix their mistakes, just work around them. At this point its about what ippo truly wants and if he's going to fight for it.

If there's one thing I don't like about the series, it's Ippo's air of invincibility. There are so many occasions during Ippo's matches where he gets absolutely obliterated and the fight should clearly go to the opponent, but through sheer plot convenient willpower hes granted a chin made out of fucking iron whenever he thinks of his friends before getting knocked out and then suddenly the opponent who was running circles around him is suddenly just as exhausted as he is. I still call bullshit on the Woli fight to name just one. Ippo wins far too many times in the series, the only opponents he loses against are those that Ippo just couldn't logically beat, and even then, it took some effort from Alfredo to beat him. I'm starting to root for the guys Ippo and Takamura fight against just to see them lose for once. Conversely, I root for Kimura and Aoki because they actually feel like grounded characters who deserve to win. Also the characters seem to suffer a bit of flanderization as the series progresses. Takamura becomes an arrogant but outlandish and likeable douchebag to a completely unbearable prick whilst Aoki turns from a goofy-but funny and relatable side character into a pathetic joke.

I have to agree on your opinion in the video. In my humble opinion, the direction of Ippo taking right now while he is recovering from his 3rd lost is right. I think what Morikawa should do is take the time in terms of writing the story and fix the overall pacing of the whole manga series. Moreover, I think Morikawa should explore more in Ippo character by exploring the mental side of boxing and from there, he should build Ippo from the ground up.

This is coming from some one whos obviously never been in the ring. Hajime No Ippo is written to be a semi realistic take on boxing, at least as realistic as it can be in anime. His last defeat is something that has happened to many professional fighters. He hit something in the middle of a match that he never experienced. He got thrown hard and fell back onto muscle memory instead of thinking and strategizing. He stopped boxing and started trying to survive and became frustrated when he got blocked and countered at every turn, when his body wouldnt do what he wanted it to do. That last match became a desperation bout; theres no room for thinking at that point. The coach, your friends, your promises none of that matters, why? Because they arent the ones in the ring flailing around and getting pummeled. Its just you and the guy beating the piss out of you. You lose confidence, you lose strategy and you lose the match 9 times outta 10. Its something that breaks alot of fighters and pushed them into retirement. Fuck it basically happened to Tyson, look at his last few matches. He wasnt out of his prime when compared to modern boxers, but he definitely wasnt boxing at his sustained level any more.
@LuxOverHeaven6 жыл бұрын
Well it turns out that as of now, Ippo is a second for the gym, because the coach is in the hospital. So my thoughts are that with being a second and seeing how everyone of his gym mates are improving, and seeing how miserable Ippo is not being in the ring, maybe Kumi will tell him to go back, etc.

1) Actually, healing brain damage isn't that bullshit. It's kinda the same in reality, but in the manga it's clear that "symptoms and recovery" of being drunk punch is completely dependant of the person. It wouldn't be that weird if IPPO has like temporal brain damage, or something of a kind 2) And about ippo-kumi promise ? @slushpuppy10904 жыл бұрын
Here is my two cents, it’s a little lengthy but hear me out We have to remember that Ashita No Joe was a big inspiration for the creation of Hajime no Ippo and Joe also had a punch drunk arc in it. Although Joe’s was never fixed and led to his death. With that said, I feel this arc is what the whole series has been building to. I feel like the inspiration from Ashita no Joe was “What would have happened if Joe wasn’t punch drunk” and for that reason I feel that Ippo WILL return to the ring. I do not think for a second that Ippo is actually punch drunk. I think that this whole thing will be explained in the manga as Ippo was so fixated on his previous loses, so fixated on his promise to Kumi, so fixated on showing his coach that Ippo wasn’t wasting his time all while trying to convince himself and everyone else that he isn’t punch drunk that he overcomplicated everything. His mind was so clouded with everything else that he couldn’t focus clearly. Another big factor is Miyata. Before all of this he had just found out that he would never fight Miyata, which has been his goal throughout the entire series. So I believe that at some point before the fight he had already come to terms with it being his last fight. Sure they could fight on a world stage, but would the end justify the means? Would it be worth his health and his relationship with Kumi? For this reason I believe he is not punch drunk, I believe strongly that he went into that match with one goal...to land the improved Dempsey roll and show everyone what he had accomplished and then retire regardless of if he won or not. The loss itself just solidified his decision of retirement, because of his promise. This would explain why all these problems and all this drama was wrote into the story before this point. It was for Ippo to have a self-reflection arc. As well as a time for the side characters to take the fore-front for a while, because we also have to remember that Hajime no Ippo isn’t all about Ippo. I’m sure writing a story where EVERY fighter has a dream was becoming quite strenuous. I’m sure that the end game of Hajime no Ippo requires a few certain fighters to be on the world stage with Ippo and that this Punch Drunk arc doubled as a excuse for the rest of the cast to get to where they need to be for the actual final part of Ippo to commence. When the stage is set, Ippo will snap out of this and fight again. It’s obvious because of how much he is still training, how much he regrets his decision, and how far his rivals are coming while he is reflecting on himself. We just gotta power through this for a little while longer, because the best of Ippo has still been yet to be seen
@melvinn56223 жыл бұрын
Everyone entitled to their own opinion; although this is for me the most "humane" sports manga adaption. His "wrong" decision completes totally with his personality; what is to happen after is to happen. Even he might be the main character, I never felt when reading or watching its just about "1 guy trying to make it".

@fortunatechaos4 жыл бұрын
What could those options be? The options given are with the goal in mind that Ippo returns to boxing. How can he return to boxing if one of those (or some variation of those) options does not occur. If Ippo is never going to return, the manga should have ended or become something else entirely. I have been reading this manga since '95. 25 years. I did stop after the Alfredo loss because I knew how long it would take to get back on track....it never got back on track. I just caught up to the retirement and its a shame.

I think that Ippo has to come back to the ring. I feel like Kumi will be what brings him back honestly. Maybe she will notice that he just isn't the same as he was and she will realize how much boxing means to him and make him step back in. She wants the man she loves not a shell of the man she loves and there are other explanations for his poor performance that medically make sense. Either way he can step back into the ring and then maybe he will finally be back to his old self or hopefully better.

I truthfully like where this is going and what direction this is going for the manga. In any given sport both parties have trained hard excelled beyond their limits but things like luck do factor in any match and what happened to ippo is no exception. Before anything else, yes, i really would wanted for ippo to have that grandeur comeback but this feels more natural in a a sport where you risk your life and mental faculties. Let us not forget that even ippos opponents had motivation as deep along with the efforts. Whats happening now is more of a flip side treatment and Im with it.

Honestly after what happened in the most recent translated chapters I do think Morikawa is setting up for the more traditional comeback where Ippo comes back to the the ring a changed man and accomplishes what he couldn't before, except here the story is giving it a lot more time to really build to that point. He previous loss isn't just something he can come back from. He needed this time out of the ring. Takamura said Ippo would need to become a monster to take on the world and with each chapter he is getting closer and closer to that point. So I definitely believe we will get our grand comeback eventually and I'm looking forward to seeing just how and when it happens.

Man when Ippo lost his second fight I thought of one thing. This manga may surprise by not going in the common path of the protagonist been the victorious winner. As said Hajime no Ippo is much more realist than other mangas, and one truth in reality is sometimes the guy who had a outstand carrier get hurt and it's done for good. There always a boxers who is really good, but had something broke in middle of his carrier and don't manage to get the belt. This is the reality of life and the manga could make it that way. Ippo made it far, but it is the end... THe manga is still going on, maybe it will surprise me, so i keep reading, but the perfect end would be Ippo with his "leaves of memories".
@heroe1486 Жыл бұрын
The manga has nothing realistic, you're talking about a manga with realistic humans in a realistic universe, not super saiyans, but where the main characters got beaten during rounds, can barely see but still win by KO just because of their will power, all of that while weighting 57kg and thus not really having KO power. So yeah "realistic" scenarios from non realistic fights, if you wanted a more mature story you should begin with realistic fights
