Let’s look at the bright side… without the damaging cuts, you may have never discovered how lovely you look with shorter hair and that it’s ok to have fun and do what you want with your hair! You look beautiful with long hair but that cut is so fun and edgy… I love it!

So sorry you’re experiencing this. Also, keep in mind that the sweaters, hoodies, scarves and fur-trimmed coats that we’re wearing during the winter months are also damaging our hair. I noticed with mine that my collars of my coats were damaging my ends and specifically that back middle part of my head. You’ll notice that when sitting in a car, the hoods, collars and scarves of our clothing press up against the back of our hair (against the headrest), and these materials dry our hair out. I realized that in looking at past years, my hair has thrived and grown a lot from May-November, is super healthy heading into the winter and then every year around April I’m needing to do some major hair cut. Also, I’m starting to wonder if the hot shower water is drying our hair out as well because it’s seems to be happening right up in the crown where most of us place our heads directly under the water. I know for me, my shower water temperature is hotter than it would be if I were just washing my hair under a sink faucet.

Very true but I’ve honestly never had those issues. I’ve been blessed to be able to grow my hair really long and have it be healthy. However, should I decide to grow it back out I’ll definitely keep everything in mind that I’ve learned and maybe it’ll yield even healthier results. Thank you and stay blessed 💖

I've embarked on a nourishing journey for my hair following a period of neglect due to a medical condition, which unfortunately led to widespread split ends that went up the hair shaft. This journey officially began in February 2023 when I decided to invest in professional hair care. However, the ongoing expense of $150 every two months for minor trims prompted a change. My last trim/cut in December 2023 looks identical to your hair cut and I'm thoroughly enjoying the fresh look. Admittedly, I do miss the length of my hair when it was at its prime, extending beyond 18 inches. Yet, this process has transformed into a journey of self-love for my hair. Taking cues from various tutorials, I've learned to trim my own ends, a practice that has proved to be both empowering and enlightening. I've become somewhat of a “expert” at spotting and eliminating minor issues like fairy knots and split ends on my own. It is my belief that all Black women should take the time to intimately understand and evaluate the health of their hair, thereby reducing over-reliance on stylists. This self-awareness has been instrumental for me; understanding what my hair truly needs has allowed it to thrive and look its best. This journey has not only been beneficial for my own hair health but has also allowed me to assist others in nurturing their natural tresses, drawing from my personal experience. While I realize this is a lengthy post, I felt compelled to share this piece of my journey with you all. Much love and blessings. ❤ Edited

So in agreement with you! I stopped going to natural hair stylists b/c I felt like I was coming away worse than when I went in (cutting way too much, not styled to my liking) on top of the exorbitant prices. So I too have learned to take care of my own hair including trimming. My hair is now healthier and longer than it's ever been in it's natural state.

Certainly, I wholeheartedly agree ladies. I’m glad we are thriving in this space of Black hair care which I believe leads to healing from “hair or haircut” trauma. ❤ At the same time, I still believe in seeking a professional's guidance is invaluable too, particularly when first embarking on your hair care journey without a clear starting point. I hold Narada's hair care advice in high regard; he fervently supports Black women in loving their natural hair and ensures they maintain control over their hair care decisions. Yet, I believe it is important to avoid becoming overly dependent on any stylist, as this can lead to a lack of personal hair care knowledge. This is particularly poignant considering the historical pressures faced by Black women, who were compelled (and sometimes by racist laws)to alter or conceal their natural hair to conform to Eurocentric and discriminatory beauty standards. I believe understanding this history of black hair care is crucial to fostering a healthier relationship with one’s hair today. Thank you for allowing me to share these thoughts. 😊

Team “new head of hair” here. I am about 2 years post wash-n-go/curly cut disaster and what I believe happened to me is that the process just weathered, weakened and dehydrated my hair such that it was too fragile to survive despite my (and professional stylists) best efforts. I was getting my hair professionally treated and trimmed/cut about every 2-3 months to repair my hair, and like you said, I would leave the salon feeling like the damage was about gone but then when I would show up for the next trim/cut, those ends would look exactly like the damage I thought we had cut off the last time. The whole BGC process just destroyed my hair 😢. I have not attempted any more wash-n-gos (probably never will) and seriously considering becoming a straight haired natural once all the damage is gone.

Sis you ain’t ever lying about how long it takes to get the hair back healthy again!!!! Like I stated, in my video, this type of damage is like nothing we’ve ever seen before! The damage literally runs rampant throughout the head of hair and works its way up the hair, strand fast and furious! Even after my very last cut, I still see remnants of the damage in a few areas of my hair. It’s on the very ends now instead of all the way up my hair, strand but it’s still frustrating to see! Unless someone has dealt with it personally it’s very hard to wrap your head around the level and severity of the damage that can occur. It’s crazy to think that what was supposed to give us extremely healthy, hair, instead destroyed hair. I pray people make informed decisions before implementing certain hair care practices so that they may be able to save their hair unlike us. Thank you for sharing your experience Sis 💖🙏🏽

Early this year, I decided to start straightening my hair (and regularly seeing a stylist to rehab my hair) and was in shock to see the level of damage to my ends. The way you have described your experience mirrors my own recent discoveries. Even your decision to just say “cut it”! I literally had my stylist cut off the the last remaining damage today because dealing with those “flicky bits” was driving me nuts! Anyway, thank you for sharing your journey. You look amazing in that cut! I've experienced the same issues. I just gave up this past Christmas, and Silk pressed it myself. As I did that, the comb was getting caught on the ends. I clipped my ends, and it seemed fine. The next day, combing hair down, it started snagging again. So I called my daughter and she and I cut all the way up to my chin, Bob style. It was beautiful. A couple of days later, snagging again. So I ask African hair God about allowing hair to air dry. From there, I started washing weekly instead of 2x weekly, twistouts, and clipping every 4wks. Grew hair pretty quickly. I cut it again. Now I'm waiting to blow out in 6wks, will clip ends again and see what it looks like. SMH! For real, I don't understand what happened. If this doesn't work, I'll have to get a close cut. I just need to find out why this happened, so it never happens again❤ Stay strong, lady! Can't wait for this season to pass, lol!

It sounds like your hair is severely dehydrated. Not just on the surface level but at the cortex level of the strands. I went through that with my ends because they are so curly, and my hair has so much texture it was almost impossible for my ends to hold on to any moisture. Trimming did no good, I had to do some intense moisturizing to repair my ends. Not just on wash days (weekly) with conditioning treatments but also moisturizing my hair between wash days. It was a lot, but it was the only thing that reversed the problem. Each week my hair got better and better. Sounds like your hair might be damaged on a deeper level and cutting it probably won't solve the problem if your splits are coming from dryness.

This makes sense. I also followed the BGC method for about 3.5 years and I noticed my hair would not hold a style for more than a day. Then I got color on my already damaged hair (which I wouldn’t have if I had known about the damage). So now my hair is damaged high porosity and I realized it’s extremely dehydrated. I’ve incorporated bond builders, protein treatments and moisture treatments but I know for me, it’s going to take a long time to reverse 3.5 years of damage.

I, for one, am going back to grease. I know a lot of people think it’s the wash n go’s causing our blues, I feel that is just the scapegoat. what about the process of washing and setting our natural curls is so much more dehydrating of a process than setting in ‘created’ curls? i think it’s the products, specifically those botanical gels that keeps the hair shaft swollen (i’m convinced this is what’s causing the tree splits) while allowing the natural oils in our hair to leave the hair shaft because it has too many humectants and the hair rewets if there’s moisture in the air. I stopped using combos the rewet (so, i no longer use ufd, kinky curly in large amounts). So far so good, will continue to analyze my shed hair on a piece of white paper. I’m experimenting with grease wash n gos this week let’s see how it goes.
@brianahurt5111

Omg please let me know how the going back to grease goes!! I am a new wash and go natural, for about 7 months washing weekly and only doing wash and goes and having it professionally trimmed every 2-3 months. My 2nd blow and trim after getting an initial cut to start my wash and go journey everything was fine and my hair looked great. 3 months later I pretty much had to get my hair cut back to its initial length 7 months ago because my ends were SO bad. Even tho I have had consistent trims the entire time. I am so sad because I made all the needed changes (no oils, butters, grease, and quality products)from products to methods and I thought (and saw) my hair flourish like never before… until I went to get a routine trim. I am seeing these amazing natural curl KZbinrs experience this AFTER YEARS of being natural, I am getting this issue after 7 months. Not sure what to do moving forward but I’m glad to know it may not have been exclusively my fault. I am thinking about going back to being a silk press and braids and grease natural, It wasn’t this hard or heart breaking☹️🥲
@ChiannaNycole
@ChiannaNycole 9 ай бұрын
@@brianahurt5111 Yea, my hair felt as though it was flourishing in the beginning as well. I think we all just needed a good clarifying treatment, that’s why we all felt an improvement in our hair. I just installed some mini twists into my hair, I used a spray leave in, a super lightweight leave in then sealed with a little dab of grease, hair feels AMAZING. Using sulfur 8 this past week has been the only thing to calm my itchy dry scalp. Going good so far! I support your blow out natural journey, do what works for you. I know a lot of people blame wash n gos for all the damage, that’s where I disagree. Why is the process of setting one’s hair in artificial curls (twist out) so much more dehydrating of a process to the hair than setting your natural curls?I still believe that we can grow our hair out in it’s natural curly state, I think it’s a matter of keeping the hair from becoming dehydrated . I definitely was over stripping my hair initially with that kinky curly come clean every wash day, so moving forward with an appropriate shampoo each wash day to remove what was applied during styling. Also, a little grease between the hard hold gel to seal. Bless you on your journey ♥️.
@shelly.v.247
@shelly.v.247 9 ай бұрын
I think you’re definitely onto something. However, I also believe it was the hard hold gels, and then baking them into the hair under the hooded dryer for such long period of time. I also believe the harsh shampoos played a role because our hair was being constantly over cleansed. Not to mention, we were not replenishing anything that had been stripped away with those cleansing shampoos. In my opinion, it was the perfect storm along with the curly cuts. So I’m glad to hear you are moving in a different direction too and I pray all goes well for you and your beautiful head of hair! Stay blessed and uplifted! 💖

Ugh unfortunately yes Sis! 😩 I’m not sure if you follow Afrikan Hair God (he’s a natural hair stylist), Rosie Amelia or SimplyTamZ but we’ve all been documenting what we’ve been uncovering. Let me tell you, it’s been a crazy ride!!! What we’ve realized is the hair will continue to split up into the healthy new growth and it’ll continue to unravel until you cut past the affected and damaged hair. This year alone it’s taken me about 4 cuts to get my hair to finally stop unraveling. I have also had a total of 6 cuts this year because although my hair stopped unraveling I still had some flicky bits left on the tips. TBT, I still have a few but they are pretty much all gone now. You have to know what you’re looking for to see them. Also, to add insult to injury, they are taking our suggestions on how to repair the hair and blogging about it all as though it’s their original recommendations. An example is, just last week BGC wrote a blog on when you might want to deep condition. However, when we said we had added it back into our regimen Aishia made reels making fun of using deep conditioner and leave in but now it’s okay??? 🧐 Make it make sense!!! I’m extremely sorry you’re going through this too. It’ll get better over time but it will require lots of cuts because just when you think it’s all gone you’ll see more. 😑 Please know you’re not alone in this and we are all here for you. I still want to know what exactly damaged our hair. I think it’s the products. My diva cut never did this to my hair. Also that Dyson blow dryer made my hair hard and brittle. A lot of people are still using it.

I believe it was some of the recommended products and the items we were told to take out. Example: Too harsh of shampoos and no leave-ins, oils and deep conditioner. Plus I think baking all that botanical gel into our hair with a hooded dryer also impacted negatively. Basically it was the perfect storm!!!!

Tbh sometimes it’s the lack of heat. Air drying means that the hair is damp for hours. I am currently experiencing this. I am colour treated but I have a lot of splits and it’s confusing because I trim 1cm a month. Yours could be caused by silicones too

I wasn’t air drying when my hair got damaged. I was using a hooded dryer because that was recommended by the BGC method I was following. I also wasn’t using silicones then either because all the recommended products were silicone, sulfate and paraben free. Fast forward I do all the opposite stuff including using silicones and sulfates etc and my hair looks great! I wish you luck in figuring out what is going on with your hair. 🙏🏽❤️‍🩹

Hey Curlfriend! This has happened to me and I could not figure it out. My hair was in a constant state of dryness. I did not think it was because I washed/conditioned it regularly but I kept getting splits. Is didn’t matter want I did. I decided that I was going to cut it all off and go back to relaxers. I gave myself a date. Until then I just started Deep Conditioning, moisture twice a week. By the 6 weeks, my hair started reviving, moisture levels came back and NO more splits. This was right before BGC craze, so I knew that no deep condish/masks would not work and I thought we would all be here eventually. Not I do it twice months even once a month and I’m find. Still no splits. I personally don’t think it’s your revised WNGs. It’s deeply dry. Love ya! Oh and ps. My splits would come back after I got a cut as well, each time & growing up the shaft.

OMG this is happening to my hair. It seems as if I need my ends clipped daily. My hair was almost bra strap length. I had 2 inches cut off, and I had single braids put in. I took my braids out my hair had grown almost 2 inches, so I cut another inch off. I think I will continue to do this until all of the damaged hair has been cut. It is awful, I don't know why this happened, I have been natural forever and I usually keep my hair in a blow-dried state. I have never had this problem until last year.

I'm wondering if your stylist was using dull hair scissors, which could cause the fraying of the ends. Then I got to the end and saw that you cut it again yourself! I hope you used good quality hair shears. FYI to anyone who isn't aware - dull, non-professional, or damaged hair scissors can cause damage to your ends. Hopefully your hair stylist is using professional shears and maintaining them properly but it wouldn't hurt to check with her. Your hair looks nice and healthy though. Hopefully you are past the damaged phase and can enjoy your hair in peace.

Great questions and my sheers are professional grade and were brand new when I cut my hair. Also, funny you should ask about my stylist sheers because I literally just got to check them out because I was assisting my stylist/bestie with her hair this week. Let me just say, her sheers are scary sharpe!!! Mine are sharpe but hers seemed like two extra sharpe razors ! Lol 👀😅

The damage I sustain in my opinion was due to the curly cuts in implementing the oils and butters method. I have since stopped all of those things, and my hair has begun to thrive again! So it just depends on if you had implemented some of the same hair care practices or not? If so, I would strongly encourage watching my previous videos on what I have done to repair my hair. This is the comment I was looking for. Being a stylist for over 30 years, I know for a fact dull shears will split hair after a cut. I’m glad to know this wasn’t her problem. Although, I still believe they should get sharpened more than some stylists would like. I also hope they are not serrated shears. I can’t stand them for straight cuts.

That’s a very fair and excellent point! Except I know for fact my stylist gets her shears sharpened routinely. Not to mention, she had gotten them sharpened the day before for my last cut. The method I was using to care for my hair left it like straw. There’s not much you can do with the damage that occurs afterwards but cut it off. 😤

I'm also anemic, and my doctor has me on a 3 month high level vitamin D regimen. I've been noticing a section in the front would break off and was finer than the rest of my hair. As we age we begin to develope some graying. The grays tend to be weaker and wirey. Even when we cover them with hair color the weakness and brittleness remains because the hair is just different in these areas, though the hair that is still naturally black is still healthy. Maybe this is what you are experiencing, It may be just your new normal. Its my deal, and I'm 53. Your hair has always been lovely regardless.

I'm not a fan of wash and goes I just think leaving your hair wet for long hours or days will damage your hair. Have you thought of going to a cosmetologist, you need someone to look at your hair on a deeper level than just on the surface.

Shelly, I am right there with ya girl! I ended up just doing another big chop. I’m about chin length as well now and my front was REALLY bad for some reason. I went back to just straightening it every 6-8 weeks, so that I could get a good trim. In between then, I’ve been deep conditioning weekly (occasionally using olaplex 3 as a pre-shampoo treatment), and wearing it stretched. For me, that means braiding it and putting it under a wig. Then I repeat the whole process the following week until I get back to my stylist for another thorough 8 week trim. All of this kind of defeats the point of they who shall not be named’s method 🫠 ….buttttt my hair is now getting back to the hair that I recognize. Pattern Beauty’s deep conditioner has been a game changer for my hair in this process. See what your stylist thinks though!
