This hit me 💯 as someone who graduated from a traditional art school, I had to unlearn a lot of beliefs and rules that restricted me from stylizing my art. I'm currently relearning things now with a broader perspective with my own art anime style and goals. Admittedly though, UNLEARNING is sooo hard 😔
@mewTripled7 ай бұрын
I'm so glad to hear you're broadening your perspective!! Yeah I think breaking rules and what we were traditionally taught is such an important part of growing up and learning as an artist!

It's especially the hate towards Anime that I never truely understood in my student years. Like hey, we hate if you copy "Anime" but it's totally okay to copy Frank Miller or the Hannah Barbera style. Like if a teacher would have said "Learn the fundamentals first and then jump into any style you want" I would have understood it, but not how most art teachers in the past handled the Anime topic!
@mewTripled7 ай бұрын
Yeah agreed on the discrimination between the two art styles... sometimes it actually came off a bit racist too when a lot of anime is not even based on a style, but is just simple animation produced from Japan that in itself comes in a variety of styles and showcases culturally specific things!

@@mewTripled Exactly. I'm glad though that times are changing and that more and more people are accepting and acknowledge Anime for what it is.

i never went to art school but I did go through a bunch of online courses taught by western instructors, and I will say that a lot of them are out of touch with the current demands of the industry. I think that the best thing you can do is to learn from a large variety of sources and never blindly believe what one instructor says. At the end of the day, everyone has a different set of values and beliefs when it comes to creating art, so you have to just learn as much as you can and figure out what approach works best for you.

I went to a smaller university and the Animation program was brand new and was tied into Film and Photography. I think it was a blessing because we all basically had to teach ourselves since the professors were new and really inexperienced. Thank goodness we had an excellent Photography professor. Since graduating a few years ago I haven’t gotten far with studios but I have had steady design work in the corporate world and that leaves me enough time and energy to work on my own art. My Photography professor told us that while we were working to break into the studios our Photography skills would put food on the table, and he was so right about that.

I’ve always had problems with overthinking when it comes to taking certain steps in my Art and animation career path, As it holds me back and makes me uncertain on what’s the more right way to approach certain things especially when we’ve learned it in school. I also had a professor who was pretty biased about anime in spite of how popular it was I get the whole thing about versatility and experimenting with other styles and maybe that’s what he meant, but he made it sound as though anime was somewhat of a bad thing, even though I was seeing more and more of it among the art and animation community as time went on. But your video helped tremendously in feel more certain about my distinct art style , and the idea of anime inspiration as a “bad thing” being outdated Also helps me feel that I can still share my anime work in certain studios or recruiters depending on the project, without fear of being criticized for it Some of your points I may already know, yet the fear of going in the “wrong direction“ can still linger, so your video of unlearning things also is a big help In freeing myself of that type of stress! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! 😊😊

I was blessed having professors really respect a lot of anime but they still encouraged us to not ONLY draw anime. Which I see the importance because in animation we got to have a variety of styles in your toolkit.

The "don't draw manga/anime style" was heavy in my schools. But I agree you need some variety, versatility to make yourself better. And that guy who said Ghibli was "lifeless" is a freaking idiot

Those prices are insanity high, especially for 1 academic year! You could get a ticket for any country in Europe, rent a room and get 3 years of an accredited art school and still have extra to spend. The most expensive you could get is 5k a year were I'm from. Heck even Gobelins France costs between 7k and 12k a year.

I went to art school a while ago, but came to see what I should be un-learning haha. The portfolio thing is interesting. I think we all went through the situation where we made a pretty portfolio site and were told to tone it down. I never really thought about having two of them.. One for me, the artist, and one that is basically a boring resume for job seeking. Also as a side note, I work for a company that sells licensed apparel to big stores, and can confirm that we've bought a ton of anime licenses this year. My company is also not known for being ahead of the times, so take that as you will. 😂 Must be big lol.

Yea im currently in school for illustrations and teachers really have issues with styles thats not realism. When it gestures they want our gestures to look like theirs. My gestures/sketches are more based in Studio Ghibli or cartoonish/semirealism like I'm games or animations. Which still follows basic fundamentals but the hatred for outside of realism like old artists from back in the day is crazy. My teaxhers would make it so hard to pass their classes is tiring I thought about quitting a couple of times.

I relate to the art teacher bashing on certain art styles, I had a totally different experience in my college for animation, it was the opposite actually. I had a teacher who was supposed to teach us animation and creating animatics, she was an anime and Pokémon fan while I however grew up with Disney style art, and Disney is what made me pursue art and animation in the first place. So, our final assignment for this class was to submit a PSA style of video, I remember her being totally upset and strict at my choice of art style which was Disney inspired (which isn't even considered a Disney art style, my fundamental skills of drawing wasn't very strong at that time) and she told me to stop copying art style from Disney because it's overrated, while one of my classmates who is an anime fan drew all of hers anime inspired and she got praises for it. I remember feeling very terrible and had to try to draw in anime style in order to get her approval for my story, because without her approval I couldn't move on to the production phase in my assignment, she told me to try out other different art styles and I remember the stress I got of not being able to replicate anime style art in that short amount of time. I enjoy anime and all of studio ghibli movies and production, but I personally like to draw art style's from Disney or art styles similar to it, more fluid strokes and less on the details of hair, looking back now I kind of wish my art teacher was a bit more open minded on people having different art styles, and just correct me on my drawing anatomy cause oh boy looking back at it, my character drawings were so flat, there was no dimension at all. I just dislike the art teachers and community on forcing art styles on each individual, everyone is inspired by different styles as well, they can correct the fundamentals like lineart and anatomy of the body and face, but those kind of comments of choices of art styles really gave me depression after, I felt so worthless after that assignment, thinking if I can't draw anime style art or other non-Disney art style well, if I can't be the jack of all trades I am hopeless in the industry. It has been many years now, and I want to pursue storyboard artist, I graduated but took a gap from job hunting in the animation industry because I was unsure what role would I wanna pursue in it, but thanks to you Mew I realize I want to be a storyboard artist, I love reading books, hearing music lyrics and wanting to translate them to images to enhance the message of each art medium. I don't know if I can make it out in the animation industry now at it's current state, but I still want to try because I enjoy watching sequential art and changes of scenes in movies. Thank you for your video and information! It has been a great help ^^

Lol, I remember looking up how to do portfolios from an agricultural communications program since my minor program didn't include it. Later I got a degree in professional writing, but by then, I had learned about freelance websites and presenting myself as a business owner. My writing school felt like elementary school. Yet the professors acted like it was high-end. Most things these days reading a few decent articles tells you more. And the ideas transfer just fine as I moved into graphic design (art-art is still just a hobby).

The only reason I can find for calling the Ghibli style “lifeless” is racism. You can call that style a lot of things, but “lifeless” is definitely not one of them.
