I prefer in-home because the clinic drama was not for me. My issue with in-home has been cleanliness in the house. I had one kid that I loved working with, but they had roaches and my BCBA didn’t seem to think that was a problem. You just never know what you’re gonna get working in peoples homes.

Although is greatly paid and you meet special people along the way ,it is a very stressful field.First been prepared for resisting pain when given aggression by certain clients. You also have to be in emotionally /mental good state otherwise is very challenging.Sometimes you feel amazing like you are doing great and then at times you feel you don’t know anything, feeling like failure. Also if you like boundaries between personal life and work, sometimes it mixes up and you will still find yourself working an hour or few after your session was over, without getting paid.

I just started an RBT position and I'm ready to resign. I have NO EXPERIENCE, but I got the job, and I feel like I was thrown out to the wolves with my first client (in-home). BA always seems busy. I was skeptical from the beginning and I should have stuck with my gut. I want to work with children, but I do not think this is the field for me. God bless every family and child with ASD. I wanted to be great with my job but I don't think I will be with this position. Moving on.

I've been an RBT for about 2 years now. I think it's a rewarding job and I feel proud of what I do but I do feel burnt out. I am experiencing everything that you are talking about and I have experienced working in toxic environments within the clinic. I honestly think it is better to get a day job that you really love and do this part time. It can take a lot out of you emotionally especially if you're only dealing with challenging behaviors. When you start to feel like this it's time to move on. I'm currently looking for work in the morning and would prefer to only do this a few nights a week or on a Saturday. I just don't have that same energy that I had when I first started.

@@ramzitherbt - I like some things about it . I got into this because i liked teaching and supporting the daily independent living skills . I think it's important for teens and young adults to have that support before they become adults. Sadly a lot of companies are so money hungry that young children who don't need so many hours of therapy are subjected to too many hours and end of suffering mentally because parents don't want to do the research. They treat it like day care and don't understand that 80% of children with autism exposed to ABA develop PTSD. I can definitely see why.. It's like mental abuse which i find very scary. That's why i decided to really look for work outside of this asap.

I started as an tech RBT back in Nov. only part time 6H. I have two other jobs (I love) wanted to get in the field and start slowly . I am now at two hours a week . Which I am fine with. Studying to pass the comp and written test. The first few days I shadowed . They explain to me a bit of what was happening . I didn’t understand a lot of it . Then they give me a child with heavy tantrum , I learned as I went . Six months later , I am working now with a different client and this client is teaching me a lot . I am able to practice what I am learning for the exams . With my client prior to this one , I couldn’t practice anything because it was mostly like crisis intervention and antecedent work before the behaviors -I didn’t know this is what I was doing -. There wasn’t a clear goal for me as a new RBT no talks about exams or anything . I did the 40 hrs training in January, it wasn’t until June by Godincidence that thru a conversation with another RBT I found out I only had six months of not retake 40 hours training (it may. Have said during the training but it escapes me). It would have been nice if there was some type of follow ip or a MO for technicians to become rbts within the office . I found out about no pay cancellation and sending me home if client didn’t show (which I am fine with it). I feel like I went in blind folded it and was blindfolded for months . Since there isn’t time to talk to other Rbts it was like during short burst questions during sessions that I find stuff out . I have Ben trying to have my como test since May3rd. Still waiting . I wish I didn’t have to depend on this people to have it done . This part is frustrating. 😢 I wish this could be change . Having to Pursue them , I feel like I am turning the arm by force asking for this favor .

I agree. A lot of times though parents need help because their way to calm a kid is just by giving them a tablet to watch videos, and family members have other things in life that doesn’t allow them to give their full attention to a kid, so they let them do what they want.

I just started not long ago. & I want to be grateful & appreciative of the opportunity. Bc it is something meaningful, something decent, functional enough pay, I can always work up even more, & somexs it really doesn't even feel like a job, bc I do feel passionate enough about. I do like kids, & I can empathize w/ anything & anyone. That it's prob to a fault. & Even tho I don't always know what I'm doing, I don't think anyone else does either. I'll be getting those supervisions & me trying to follow along is like right. Let me grow 10 hands, hopefully snap the facility into being quiet, & hopefully this method will work bc the 100 th time is a charm. & Do all that at once. I've been dealing w/ ppl longer than machinery longer in my working yrs. & Even mechanics can be a mystery. Treating living beings like there's an actual routine to us, methods, or tactics isnt always gonna be effective. Even with "manipulation." In working world though, no1s gonna let u say manipulation. When it's exactly what you're doing. Ugh at the pretend terminology & the sorts we hafta learn that doesn't really actually apply. In the real world. Also, I must've sprained my foot somehow. Chasing after a munchkin or letting them sit in my lap or wever I was doing w/ them little ninjas, lol .. but it's def not easy. My world's kinda do mix in together. But only when it comes to my feels. The other part they don't always want to tell u is there's always a lack of supplies in prob any & every facility. I mean granted, ppl & kids & the such prob accidently or purposefully destroy, get stolen, broken, misplaced, wever. But still . . But I do actually manage to get things done. I do hafta improvise though by the creativity I had to come up with on my own. I finally get kid a noncompliant kid to finally plop down somewhere, fine. Let's have your way then... But in my head it's like I have to mentally go down a list of their skills to challenge, improvising w/ anything close by, while I hafta create something out of thin air, so that they prob don't even think they're doing work. Bc at any second that kids gonna be back to zooooom, pew, pew pew, pew pew pew in no time! & Yet clean, maintain materials, collect date, be supervised,,, listen to multiple convos,, I don't feel completely unappreciated but I don't always feel the most acknowledged. & Some of those bcbas r just straight rude. I have 1 & she has an attitude about everything. & Then she looks around for an audience after saying something so "brilliant" & snarky, bc she apparently needs validation in being a bully "bad arse" or something. Like I said, I'm new. So I don't always know how all my apps work, schedules, everything & everything outside my domain... But then they expect u to deal with curve balls they're not even always sure about, everything else in between, & lots of bs politics between folks, lack of yada yada but meanwhile it's like what do u mean leave the other kid waiting, hanging & what do I do w/ this other kid then. Don't u ppl stress punctuality or is this only used when it's convenient to u. But in her words it's like they can wait. Sooo, let them wait. In short, really don't understand how u can't keep up w/ our messy order but that's on u.. But it's the end of the world if someone else has to wait bc they change everything at the last min & data looks weird but sure if all else fails, just blame the new person. Rather than seeing things out of my reach for what it is. Out of my reach. I always hate coming to the pt of realizing how stunted ppl r emotionally or in any other state. when for the past few yrs all I've done was supposed be in environments where in my head, I thought it was requirements circulate around how much compassion a person could have and other qualities alike. In general. Its like idc if other ppl r testing u, all I did was ask a question .. try too hard.

RBT is a tough job. I am parent of a child who is on the ASD. My son had great RBT she worked really hard and was an adult learner. We have a new RBT and she starts doing some work and then for the rest of the session she’ll just sit there coloring my sons coloring books and let him play without doing any ABA and that makes me feel very frustrated and angry. I hear your side of it, but I feel like you’re an RBT who cares and who does your job. The first RBT we had was promoted several times because she had a great work ethic. Tbh we didn’t cancel sessions as much at least we tried not to when my son was sick bc I honestly thought about the RBT not getting paid, but sometimes we had to bc it was really bad. When we didn’t cancel session we’d tell our BT and make our son wear a mask and BT would also wear a mask and we’d crack open the window for air circulation. My husband and I learned a lot from our last BT, we’d ask if we could join in the session after work and in between breaks (work from home and in home ABA). We would use some of the things our son was working with that BT and on our own time and weekend implemented it in play and routines as well as on outings (esp summer time). I just want them to get quality BTs who want to do their job. For our new BT we realized she was a bit lost but bc we already knew what our son worked on we are showing our new BT, I let her know that she will probably want to try and make a routine w/ him to get a good rhythm but she won’t take our advise or implement the field trainers advise (I train for a living and understand adult and children styles of learning and do extensive research on ABA and child learning on my own bc I want to help my child) we try to stay out of the session as much as possible at the beginning but this lady is literally coming to just sit on the couch and call out to my son without engaging him. My son is a sweet boy he does have a lot of energy though bc he has ADHD also, so we kinda asked the BT if this is something she’s up to after sometime and sometimes when he has nervous system overload he gets really emotional and sensitive and wants to weep a lot and hug and be held, esp if he has a bad sleepless night, he goes through those every so often. We just really miss our old BT but part of the reason we have the new BT is bc we put our son on Medicaid through OPWDD since they said we could keep his old insurance but that was false and so it took 3 months to get him off Medicaid and back on his old insurance… we were so frustrated because Medicaid does not provide everything we need it to. This super long message to let you know that I think you’re great, thanks for being honest about your experience but also if you can’t do this job don’t do it, it is hard work, don’t expect to just sit there and get paid for not doing your work or giving up trying engage the child and just have them watch their tablet the entire session, you’re stealing from the child’s potential, your employer and frustrating the family who’s trying to get their child the best help possible! Thanks!

Or the length of time he or she is with them may be too long. Just my opinion that’s all. @@ramzitherbt Yes it's specifically designed to train parents to become an RBT. They help you pass the exam and get certified, they also have live meetings 3 times a week. Once the program is completed and you pass the exam, then your employment begins. It's only in most states with the exception of a few that don't have the program. In my state, male RBT’s are so rare that they will pay them more even if they don’t have any experience. You’d be treated like a prize at any company lol. I understand that some parents prefer the RBT to be the same gender as their child, nothing wrong with that. It’s always been an issue of supply and demand, but women get really undercut sometimes & when you find out, it sucks.

I gathered.. I shadowed a male. Idk if this is sexist but when males r triggered. They're really triggered. But when not, they're really not. Lol dudes forever have this vibe to them where it's like female: sooo what r u thinking about? Males: ? Nothing. That's kinda to me what it's like working w/ males in a health field. But it's also annoying. Bc the battles they pick r ugh. & They do nt really necessarily excel at the nurturing thing. But I guess they're good for sterness & super "chill." Although not ever having a boy myself is a little awkward. But getting used to them is like plz focus on pottying. Also, we don't need to be playing at the sink all day. Or playing w/ their pp when sitting down. Moving along

Omg for real, bc we miss our old BCBA who came to some in person visits, the new one is located somewhere else and does every so often supervisions over zoom. They need a lot more BCBAs these companies need to stop being cheap as heck, I’m going to start complaining that the companies themselves need restructuring if they’re going to help children with ASD and the BTs need to get paid well and feel acknowledged and valued for better morale!!

I'm relocating to the states and I got this RBT Job opportunity at a clinic. I would appreciate it if you mention what benefits, advantages & disadvantages I should inquire about before I sign the Job contract.

I believe I have several videos stating the benefits and advantages of being an rbt. But to sum it up it’s a very fulfilling career.

😍 Handsome. But yessss your being super honest. LOL Rbt work can be challenging. Parents who are in denial and do not respect your line of work. People who do not trust the process.

Aw thank you 🙏🏽 Yes this process sometimes can take very long and progress can be very minimal. Then out of no where it clicks for the client. Keep doing what you’re doing!

I love the job but it has changed so much. The companies are taking advantage of so many families and techs... Companies have ruined the field.
