I've always heard of D'Angelico guitars.
I've always seen D'Angelico's at guitar stores.
But still, I've never had any interest in D'Angelicos...
Until Now.
And I'll Tell You Why.

There's a reason for the headstock design. These guitars were originally made by John D'Angelico in the 1930s. The design is art deco, with a nod to NYC. The trussrod cover mimicks the Chrysler Building. D'Angelico started out as an apprentice violin maker and then switched to guitars and he only made about 1164 guitars in a little over 30 years and in the late 1990s, the trademark was bought by a group and they made all the current guitars based on the original designs from the 1930s.

The size adds mass and it contributes to its resonance. Jon D'Angelico knew this when he designed it, not just for aesthetics

@@furtherdefinitions1 I meant the headstock size-it is comically large. The body I understand and am fine with.

I've had this guitar in transparent wine and agree with your reactions to it. I'm not put off by the head stock and perhaps not as steeped in tradition/norms as you are. The pickup is more versatile than I expected, too. Thanks for the review!

Head stock is an Art Deco design from the 1930's, so it is more like an historical tradition which is cool.

Great review! I am a D'Angelico fan but you are right the headstock is always a point of discussion in the D'Angelico circles and various forums. It is a love it or hate it thing. I love it and think about if you were stuck in an island with just that guitar and all you had was a raft to get away, you could alays use the neck as a boat paddle. LOL! Cheers!

stumbled across your video. nice. I have this guitar in the wine color and I love it to death. I do think it is versatile going from jazz to progressive and rock. Nice sound when not plugged in also. thanks for the video review. I like the headstock because it is from the historical maker, Mr. D'Angelico himself. Its iconic in a way. Old company.

Metallica on a jazz box? You are young, and so you deserve a break. The pickup is a Floating Pickup. It sounds gorgeous. Many think that it is a better way of placing pickups and that it doesn't interfere with the true sound of the wood. The few of them that I've played tells me that they have a point. Learn a few jazz chords (Maj7, 9, 11, 13ths) rather than the blues lines you are playing on it and play it plugged in. I guarantee it will sound more fantastic than you currently think it does. The inlays are gorgeous. Beautifully made. The bindings look great too. The headstock is in art deco style, the style that came out of the late 20's and early 30's, when D'Angelico was hitting their stride as jazz guitar makers. The tuners beautifully match the art deco headstock. The tailpiece is also done in art deco. It's the same style of the Empire State building, Chrysler building, and other buildings/architecture created at the time. It's over the top, yes, but also gorgeous, and a symbol of the time. At the time, Jazz was the popular music. Hard to believe but true. Everyone listened to it and danced to it. All of those features on the guitar just scream "play jazz on me". I hope that was helpful. Oh, and by the way, it's a gorgeous guitar, but I'm not sure that I like the white paint job on it. For me it needs the natural wood colors or some form of a nitrocellulose glossy sun burst finish to look the right part. I guess this white color gives it a modern look for D'Angelico. Oh, and one more thing. Might I recommend at least .012 gauge or higher flatwound strings. That will really make it ring out. Not sure what size/type of strings you are using.

Great review and appreciate the clean tones. When checking a review I want to know what the guitar sounds like without the usual array of boutique pedals and fx! I'm with you 100% on the D'Angelico aesthetic - way too much bling for me, which is a shame because I believe they are very well crafted, great sounding guitars. Very tempted by the new D'Angelico Tour range which has a more traditional, minimalist styling. Just waiting for a few more reviews on the Supro Boltbucker pickups before I pull the trigger!

You've never seen Gretsch White Falcons? Also, all early electrics had their pickups and electronics mounted on the pickguard. Also it's not true that the headstock has no effect on the sound. The extra mass in a headstock as well as the headstock angle adds resonance to the guitar. It's not all just about the aesthetics

I can picture Tim Armstrong playing one of these guys. The headstocks ridiculous, but you are correct, it’s extremely versatile. Good review, man.

@@everysingleguitars tysm man! :) does this result in a different sound obviously? I like the lighter sounding guitar playing videos and the best ones always have a D’angelico, can you explain that a little please? :)
