just what I needed to hear, I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't pick up a pencil and draw after art school. thank you for your vulnerability.

The botanical gardens look beautiful. Vey calming. This video really resonated with me. I started sewing in February and often feel the garments I produce are not good enough. I have to keep reminding myself that I am a beginner and my sewing will improve but only if I keep challenging myself. It is very tempting to stick to a pattern or style of garment I know I am confident creating but I won't improve my general sewing skills if I don't try different patterns/garments. I love sewing but can understand the frustration of something not turning out as you imagined.

They are very calming indeed :) Ahh I can totally relate to that! But you’re right: you won’t grow if you don’t challenge yourself. But it’s a very frustrating journey, but it’s all worth it in the end!

Angelica, thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom. I know others who had very similar experiences at art school, institutions crushing - rather than nurturing - creativity. Even the idea of an artistic 'exam' that can be 'failed' is ludicrous when you think about it. I recently read an interview with Mei Stephens in the wonderful 'pompom', a knitting journal (issue 44) - she says: 'I'm constantly learning what living a creative life means to me. I used to think the only path you could take out of art school was exhibiting in galleries. Turns out I'm much happier working nine-to-five as a poster printer and knitting on the couch when I get off work. In the end, whether at work or at home, materials are always passing through my hands. Hours are spent working to create something. Be they prints or socks, they are all artefacts of my body in motion. Whether they were hours or years in the making, they are proof that I was here; someone made this.' I love this realisation that EVERYTHING I create is the result of my body in motion. Keep creating Angelica - don't let anyone's opinion or lack of 'reaction' stop you ❤ p.s. I love your art!

Wow, that is a wonderful quote, thank you for sharing! And thank you for watching, I do appreciate it so much. You're so right about crushing rather than nurturing creativity, such a shame! I feel like making art is kind of an elitist thing as well, or they want it to be. I think anyone can create art and call it it that - art :) Thank you for your thoughts ❤️

I've really had to work on this with my sewing. Often i need distance of a few weeks before i like something. I made one shirt like a year ago that I've recently fell in love with. I'm sad that when i finished it, all could see was the mistakes. But I'm happy those feelings have faded with time. There's a quote i think about a lot, it's really helped me push through perfectionism. "Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." - Henry van Dyke

Oh yes, sewing is a difficult one as well. I also remember working really hard on something but when it's time to finally put it on, it just feels... meh! I'm just afraid it will look very 'home made' and never really wear it. But it gets better! I also have the same with art sometimes.. and than after some distance it turns out I love it. I guess it's also normal to need some distance when it's finished :) And that is a beautiful quote, thank you for sharing ❤️

For me it took many years to find something else, besides photography. Photography became my nr. 1 passion. Now after many years I feel like I have found my love for drawing back a little, but also lots of other things like sewing! I think it's so good to have creative outlets :)

Thank you for this video, I've realised how I've been avoiding the crafts I used to love for such a long time after leaving school.

This video was so soothing and that's something I try to tell my students (no matter how young they are, many have self-confidence issues)! Loved seeing all those plants and your drawings, but what were those birds at the beginning? (and the one you draw at the end of the video) They don't look native to the Netherlands... 😂
@angelicavis Жыл бұрын
Ahh so sad to hear about kids having self-confidence issues, but I can totally relate to that. I remember an 'event' at sunday school where I was so angry about commentary about my drawing that I never went back again 😆 It's sad that we'll get insecure at such a young age, sigh. Ahh yes the birds! Well in Dutch they are called 'Roelroels', which is funny because Roel is a Dutch male name. Rollulus rouloul is their latin name, no idea how they are called in English! Thanks for watching ❤️
@mireiagili9826 Жыл бұрын
@@angelicavis It's so sad that you experienced that at Sunday school, and now you mention it I had a similar experience at a drawing contest in which I was told my art didn't quite stick to the theme they wanted (I must have been 7 or 8, of course I didn't follow the theme!). I didn't enjoy drawing after that,, I think 😞 Sadly some teachers still do that, but I want to believe that most try to encourage their students (at least in pre-school and primary where tecnique shouldn't be an issue). I searched for that bird's name in English and it's a crested partridge, and now I want to see one (in Utrecht since I don't feel like going to South East Asia at the moment) 😅

Dankjewel.

Oef ja vervelend waren die vakken he! Ik moest ze nog wel doen, ook al zou ik naar de kunstacademie gaan. Zo jammer wel haha! Vond wiskunde en economie ook verschrikkelijk inderdaad. Bedankt voor het kijken!
