My smoking experience got so much better when I just started buying whatever was on sale at my trusted dispensaries. 99% of everything we see is a "hybrid" that they assign "indica/sativa" based on their terpenes and stereotyped effects. Shop terpenes and shop the sales. Don't get suckered into paying full price for premium labeled bud.

I just bought some joints that were 50% off cuz they were a year old. But that was perfectly fine because they were properly sealed. Besides if you're paying full price for weed in california that means for good weed you're paying at least $60 an eigth out the door.

My favorite is Lamb's Bread, and any of the more old school strains I can find. There's company that sells a great version of Lamb's Bread where I live, and they tend to have other old school strains as well. I can't ever find White Widow buds though.

@@dasprii7703 ditto, my online friend. Agreed on Malawi! I've had that once. If you're able to see terps, aim for shit loads of terpinolene and it'll get somewhere close. Cookies strains generally vibe given the genetic parent but imo they just diluted the genetics for potency. Modern grows of Durban hit 26-29% thc and feel fuckin rad to me.

it's funny when a dispensary website says indica, then i look it up and the strain info online is sativa. it's hard to know what you're really hitting unless you know which terps affect you, and i'm trying to figure it out. I started getting terrible anxiety from weed recently even though it wasn't a problem for years, and i've been trying to lean indica, but i noticed some of them have terps from sativas that made me anxious. i gotta get enough money for a study to scientifically hone in on which terps to avoid and which to look for because i was not paying attention at all until recently. i've barely been using my ball vape, so my tolerance has gotten crazy low. i think it's bringing out the individual terpene effects more.

I'm glad you brought this point up. When my mom first got into herb as a way to replace her pharmaceuticals, all the budtenders really knew was smoking it and "sativa vs. indica". Luckily my mom decided to stick with it and was able to figure out what worked for her on her own, but this tends to be a massive barrier for people with no experience with herb that want to mainly use it as a medicine.

Me too, I think we should ask what's your preference. Because I realized people like a curtain feeling, every strain hits differently. Some sativas feel like hybrids, some hybrids feel like straight indicas. So really it comes down to what you like to feel.

I just love hash these days. Feels all the same to me. I used to be able to tell by the smell. Golden Goat and Haze to me always smelt very citrusy when you got them in concentrate forms (live resins in 2017-2019) from Mana extracts from the Dankery in Springs. I just go for the terps. No percentages. No indica vs sativa. Just terps! :) Peace and love brother.

From what I learned "Indica,Sativa,Hybrid" describes what terps and cannabinoids are in the bud since those are what help cause certain effects, I say this because for medication certain terps will increase peoples anxiety and if your taking it for that then you wont go for those. This is my take on it

Have you ever seen research on terpene consumption that shows relevant benefits without cannabinods? Because terpene is essentially a smell. It's like saying the smell of your pillow calms you down, and the smell of walmart makes you anxious. Those are associated responses, the same effect essential oils have. I.e. it's all in your head. Terpenes would be used as an extracted medication if they did anything other than make smells. The truth is that having special terpenes allows weed growers to charge extra if it has a flavor people enjoy more frequently or are looking for because it's the hype right now. Think of if like scotch or cigars. They both have active drugs, and cheap ones are not good, like more expensive ones. But that's more of a quality issue. You can get a 12 year scotch for a tenth of the price of some 10 year scotches. Why? Flavors. That's it. Expensive scotch just tastes "special." Keeping in mind that taste is subjective. P.S. Fun fact: the smell of your pillow calms you down because it smells like mold. The mold can cause toxic mold syndrome, where your brain associates that smell with comfort while it's actually poisoning you. Wash your pillows.

I smoke for fun, to relieve stress, and to help me fall asleep. Every strain relaxes me while amplifying what mood I was already in. I find the differences in high are small, like some strains feel more heady. But either way I can relax with any strain and I don’t find that the indica/sativa label predict the high. I can only think of one sativa strain, Rollins, that is particularly energizing. I love a skunky or gassy citrus/pine/lemongrass sort of flavor and a heady high. I’ve found both indicas and sativas that have these effects though. (Also any other terpinolene fans here??) Oh and I agree with edibles and distillate, every high is the same for me! Overall, I think everybody’s experience will be different. For some, sativa vs indica or strain matters a lot (like someone looking for particular medical effects) and for others like me that don’t have any issues with weed and just need to relax, it really doesn’t make a difference! But I do think the indica vs sativa labeling dumbs down the differences in effects, as everyone’s experiences are different. I think you have to experiment on your own to figure out what works, it’s not a one size fits all and it’s hard to predict how a certain strain will make you feel in that moment!

Terpenes are mainly for smell and flavor but there’s a possibility that they help synergize with the cannabinoids helping the entourage effect on the endocannabinoid systems. The problem now though is everyone just wants a high THCA percentage of indoor bud when really sun grown bud has more cannabinoids and terpenes which in effect should get you more of an experience.

Myrcene is the indica dominant gene, that is also in the same family as hops that are in IPAs. Generally if it has more than 0.5% myrcene is considered indica and if it has less than .5% myrcene and it is considered sativa. They're also up more uplifting terpenes like limonene which in combination with a low myrcene terpene will be more sativa

To be honest I am a regular smoker and I legit do feel the difference in head high and body highs. Sativa and Indica does have different, I get more active and energetic with sativa, whereas with Indica I do get your “couch locked” description. So personally I always choose sativa.

I work in a dispensary and I definitely agree with you but it's not really us or at least my store that use different wording. But most of the time people who come in will ask for indicas or sativa's specifically. I do wish we could do a little more training on terpenes in all dispensarys

For someone who works in a more open industry. The terps is how the bud is classified as either an indica or sativa. Certain terpenes for people could cause a different effect. This is why hybrid indica can feel like a sativa because maybe the sativa terps work more for you than the indica or vice versa. Or maybe you just feel high, and there is no difference in strains. Unless you smoke legacy sativa or indica your not going to feel a difference in your highs since all of our modern grows are mostly hybrid since it's cheaper to manufacture hybrid strains that grow faster than putting effort into quality flower. Not that all hybrids are bad, but just how I've seen things work.

medical budtender here - it's very true that we get "trained" to ask if someone likes sativa or indica more, it's honestly not a bad ice breaker for the less knowledgeable! it's an annoying question 100% but i think the "body high" vs "head high" argument isn't necessarily the cut and dry point a lot of people make it out to be. pretend you're me, a 23 year old in a medical only state who has been consuming since the age of 11-12 - ol sue walks in the shop asking what she should get for pain because her surgeon recommended her a card but didn't tell her anything else about the stuff, just that it's helped other patients he's operated on. a scenario has now been created in which you are expected to be a doctor for this older lady who has never once in her lifetime touched a gram of flower. you might start off with something along the lines of "oh wow! sounds like you are in a lot of pain, i know when i'm in pain i tend to gravitate towards indica - theres an old saying maybe you've heard that an indica will leave you in-da-couch" simple, now we've gotten a basic piece of information taught that "indicas are sedative" - the person understands that you are trying to engage with them, there is a rapport being built. this right here is the big staple point of the "indica or sativa" question in my opinion, the rapport. its a culturally sound way of asking what type of relief someone is looking for in a medical setting without being too intrusive, you're friendly, you're engaging, its just a simple one size fits all solution type of question. we work in dispensaries, man - we know that "indicas and sativas" are all just hybrid weird conglomerate frankenstein-esque hybrids, we just need to know where to start with asking people what they need. truly and honestly i think this video is more a gripe with poor budtender care than anything else - there 100% needs to be more informative material nationwide on cannabis as a whole. strong feeling we're nearing incredibly close to federal legalization in some shape or form in the next 10-20 years, the people need to know whats up :)

I always buy what I want and then also buy the bud tenders recommendation. A: it lets try new stuff I wouldn’t have otherwise and has let me find some new strains or products I really like I never would have found otherwise and B: I feel like I get a really good idea of how much the employees at that dispensary actually care about the products based on the quality of what they recommend me.

I will say (being different from person to person) as someone who gets RESTLESS if I smoke sativa strains, I like knowing so I can avoid those. (And yeah, I get the effect even if I don't know the strain before hand. My coworker and I trade hits off carts, and I can tell when they have a sativa cart. I get WAY more ADHD fidgey and restless.)

As someone who went down the road of “indica and sativa are outdated nomenclature”, I have to kind of backtrack on that. They’re still fairly accurate, and shopping based on terpenes simply does not work. Once you know a strains lineage, the potential effects become clear. It’s not “just the way the plant grows”, as some would say. Terpenes play a role, but their significance is debatable.

I did an experiment, every time we would get deliveries at my dispo, everyone gets a gram sample. Over the course of a year I threw it all into a big jar. If I have no idea what it is, it all feels the damn same 😂 you aren’t going to notice the difference between a 20 and 30%. Not to mention there is a 10-15% variance for testing in Colorado. Your 32% is probably more like 22% hahaha those numbers hardly matter. I’m so tired of people just saying give me the best one, or “ I want to be giggly, I don’t want to be tired, I don’t want to be hungry, I don’t want to be anxious etc. just don’t smoke weed then 😂

Weed has three different species Indica sativa and hemp all grow different heights and have different THC yields it's like big differences in THC 0.4 30 in 70 big differences you can make a Indica plant having a up high and a down high the high doesn't change what the plant is

Agreed this started a few years ago.. there’s no difference and everyone’s biochemistry and tolerance is different. So what not make you one way makes someone that way lol. You get high either way.

Interesting perspective. May I suggest research into aromatherapy and it's effects on the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. It might increase your understanding of Indica vs Sativa. Plant morphism is irrelevant to consumers, only an understanding of how to shop with your nose. Which starts with "Indica or Sativa?" for the average consumer. Kinda like sticking a finger in the wind when golfing.
