I completely agree with you. I went from playing 8-12 hours a day to playing 4-6 hours a week. Drastically improved my life. And now when I do get time to sit down with my bros and play I genuinely enjoy it. I found myself when I was playing all day to dread the game and my life. When you work hard all week at your job, school, and the gym and you finally get to sit down and play for a bit you’ll find that you’ll enjoy it so much more.

I’ve fallen out of love with video games, however my life has improved dramatically when i reduced my video game consumption. Throughout the week, I’m working and improving myself. I work on my side hustle on the weekend as well. I have a friend in a different country and we play the game together sometimes on the weekend, But we still talk throughout the week about deep topics regarding masculinity, reading, improvement stoicism etc. he actually introduced me to Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. I do agree that video games need to go. But I don’t agree that you need to cut out every fun thing in someone’s life. As he said, just don’t get addicted. My step brothers are addicted and justify not going to the gym and playing video games. I feel for them.

I think the overall message with this and other highly accessible media/entertainment - even youtube is that its too easy to fall into binges or hours on hours and then losing yourself. If you can discipline yourself to cut off in certain timelimits or know when there is somethign that takes precedence then you are set. Its the MINDLESS gaming and the AVOIDANCE of your real problems that video games let you hide from while also making you feel as if you have overcome those obstacles. Balance in anything is key - MA✨

Red Dead Redemption 2 gives you a great example of a man to be a role model. Way better example of true masculinity then anything Hollywood is popping out. Here's my thoughts. I play Minecraft. I used to be a much larger Jeffrey, playing minigames and other games as well, and even Minecraft for like 10 hours a day. I used to play it until 4 or 5 am pretty much every day. I still play it, but I interact with it in a healthier way now. My sleeping habit is regular: I go to sleep at 10 and wake up at 7. In terms of my self improvement journey, I've added on one habit every month to break or gain, that I'd keep doing after the month has passed, and I've done that for a few months now. Stopping video games is far down my list, but it's in the 2022 category. I think that I interact with Minecraft in a semi-healthy way because I like to build complex structures and manage resources. I can confidently say that it has definitely made me more creative and look at things in a different way. I will admit that I play it for 3 or 4 hours every day. However, I understand that it's something that I should stop, as it gives me false gratification and purpose, is very stimulating, and takes up a lot of my focus. I'm planning on transitioning off of Minecraft onto other productive hobbies like coding, but I think I should have it after I have a lot of good stable habits woven into my routine, so I don't feel suddenly deprived and break all of them.

I know that feel. I refused to migrate for both privacy and political reasons, but another consequence was having the access to my account revoked. I've since emailed Mojang support and had my account permanently erased. A tough step, it's my most beloved game with thousands of hours in it, but it had to be done. I can quit all gaming, and I likely will when I have a job or full time education. If you want to fully erase it, the deletion process is just an email away. Of course, it's a radical and irreversible change, and it erases years of vapid structures. It even is a monetary loss, though I think the game paid back its value. Whatever it takes, though. God bless.

If you want to improve your mind, but also like your games, one idea I suggest is writing for a while after a gaming session. Write about what hijinks you pulled, what happened in the story that session, what your character's thoughts are (works well with RPGs), anything. A paragraph or two at least after each session. I used to do this after playing Skyrim as a kind of creative project for my character, and personally ended up getting addicted to the writing over gaming. While I myself agree with most of Hamza's thoughts here, I'm not going to tell anyone to stop gaming. However if you're struggling with reading or finding another hobby to really sharpen your mind, writing about your sessions may help. And don't worry if it's shit, nobody needs to see it. Just be creative for a while.

I slightly disagree Hamza. I play video games. I never ever play more than an hour a day, and I rarely play every day in a week. I set a timer. In fact, I normally only play 30-45 minutes a day. I read/meditate/work out three, four times as much as I play video games. I only play single player games, that way I can stop and start whenever I want. I think I have found a good balance with them. Yes, at the end of the year I’ve probably spent about 200 or so hours playing them. Yes that’s a lot of time. But it’s time I’m willing to spend playing them because that is the 20% that gives me the 80% of joy. Im willing to sacrifice growth in those 200 hours for some instant gratification.

I usually agree a lot with you, but as much as games can consume your life, they won't necessarily do so. I see several people who yes, do get addicted and wake up and go to sleep playing video games all day. I used to compare what I thought was playing a lot and then got to see people with 10s of times more play time on a game than I do on total. But the problem doesn't lie in the hobby of gaming, it lies in someone not administrating the time in their lives. Not all hobbies are necessarily productive or will produce something from their development, not every single of your waking hours are spent on some kind of productive activity. To me, it seems that you've come to resent gaming, probably as your experience (and maybe the spoken experiences of others) with games was really poor, be it from the kind of games you played or why and how you played them. For example, many people play games just to fill in time. That's unproductive and unfulfilling, so if someone had a habit of playing games for the sake of spending time away, no wonder they will resent it when they quit and start doing productive things. Maybe you had a similar experience, I don't know, but it seems that whatever your experience was with gaming, you didn't do it for fun or a passion at all. I've had deep conversations within games, I've made great friends when playing games who I carried into adulthood, I've seen streamers talk about life experiences in game together, I've seen people comment on extracted life lessons they needed to have from playing a game, and so much more. So overall, you speak as if there is only one kind of experience to gaming, but from my (and many others) lived experience, yours on this subject is very limited. Nobody should agree with every single thing someone says, and if they do, they have either not heard much, or they aren't living their own life. From how adamant you feel about this and how confident you are about it, despite being so contradicting with my experience, it definitely makes me start questioning other advice as well

Coming from someone who is big into self-improvement, it’s ok to take some time out of your day for some pleasure, solely for the sake of pleasure. Embracing delayed gratification is an important part of self-improvement, but like anything else, it can be pushed too far. Not everything has to be about productivity. Once you get a certain amount of work done in a day, there's no reason why you can't enjoy some pure fun, be it playing a video game or watching some Netflix.

I’ve noticed a trend with the things you have become addicted to previously, because you found it difficult to regulate playing video games, smoking weed etc. you assume it’s the same for everyone else, and that it automatically makes someone a loser. It honestly just seems like you have an addictive personality? I’ve never once had a problem with spending way too many hours on a game or smoking too much, and I’ve been doing it for years while also being able to balance the other more important priorities in my life. There’s a way to balance everything in a “healthy” way, you just have to possess the ability to do so. Not everyone is the same, clearly. There’s also a huge market in making good money with video games nowadays, loads of opportunities. It’s definitely not a waste of time if you know how to use that time in a way that benefits you Also, gaming has helped massively with my mental health personally, if it wasn’t for a lot of the games I’ve discovered over the years, as well as some of the channels related to gaming that I watch every now and then, I would have found it very difficult to get through a lot of the things I was going through at the time. I am extremely thankful for the way video games have changed my life and perspective, plus there’s nothing else like video game soundtracks. Literally nothing

From someone who’s gone through the same journey, I 100% agree with Hamza. I used to be an absolute addict but I was consciously aware that this isn’t right and that is key to fixing and problem in life. You can’t make up excuses for it. If you’re gonna do it, do it while admitting that you’re wrong. The way I eventually fixed my problem was by deciding to take a clean 3months break. And I promise you life hasn’t ever felt any better. And I’m telling you that it will be hard, but only for the first month. Once you breakthrough that first month, you’ll look back and spit on your old self cuz u will now be so proud of yourself cuz you’re actually building yourself up in those hours that you used to waste. And that’s not to say that you will never get to play. I may play with some old mates once every month or so, but whenever I’m not playing I don’t think about the game and I’m not feeling bad for not playing. And that’s ultimately how you gain control over yourself. The amount of discipline it will take of you to break that bad habit will be huge. But once you do it you will truly be able to achieve anything you put ur mind into. Keep going legends 👊

He builds his social circle both in person and virtually, forming close connections through a variety of mediums. The characters in these games were a massive reason why I started lifting weights and working out seriously a few years ago. Playing DMC inspired me to lose 60 (220 to 160) pounds because I wanted to be like the main characters, and now I am in great health. fr video games are a work of art for me and an inspiration for my own work and such.. I actually value the time I spend on it and it''s okay IMO just if you don't spend 10000 hours on league and you don't actually enjoy it ngl We humans see everything as stories and these books, movies and even video games are like that and a work of art we can appreciate. IMO Hamza is generalizing too much. He thinks everyone is like him and views it like him. He sees his younger self, but the same advice is not for everyone. Don't tell someone they can't just because you couldn't. I think that if you don't enjoy it and still waste time of it, it's a waste of time. Some for example actually like spending 1000 hours on something and honing their skills in video games. Whilst others (like me) are there for the relationships the stories to be told and lore to be explored. There are many different kinds of gamers though and this is where I don't know what my point is. My take is that if you enjoy it and it does NOT take over your life and stops you from doing the things you actually want please go ahead. If you have the feeling that you are wasting time than there is a high chance you are. Although, I don't know if everyone CAN have a healthy relationship with video games. It's just a difficult hurdle to get over, but I do think it will be good when I get over it, and it will show me who is worth keeping in my life

I disagree hard bro, video games are an art form like films or music. Depends what you play and how you play though I guess. And if you wanna talk about reading, games like disco elysium and planescape torment are introspective stories that make you think as deep as any other fiction would, and have fun doing it. I feel like what you are talking about is a culture of gaming and playing competitively (not having fun) and you do have a point there. Games like cod or even tekken (which i rate) where you are sinking time into it to improve a skill for no tangible gain is arguably a waste. But the thing about not making real friends is kinda bs that's just your experience.

I would say my experience with video games has had one genuinely good effect. About 3 years ago, I started looking into aviation and was fascinated with all the buttons 12 year old me saw on the flight deck, so I asked my parents for a flight simulator and they agreed. I read through manuals, watched videos, hours of trial and error just to learn how to even play the flight simulator and fly the plane. I do however classify it as a game, it does give me alot of overstimulation. Fast forward 3 years, I have decided to pursue an airline career as flying jets TRULY makes me happy, I can save 2k on flight classes due to my prior knowledge which came from video games/ flight sims. However i think this falls more into the category of an esports player that hamza said as they worked on the game and practiced more than they played, which was my case. I don't really play flight sims that much anymore as i have learned the basics and have admitted to myself that i am no longer learning anything new, just flying planes for fun since i have learned a great amount of aviation. In my opinion i think this is a rare case of video games being helpful torwards someone.

Personally this is my Jeffrey experience. About 3 years ago I found someone that was a lot like me. I was really lonely so he was my first friend and we played everyday pretty much for about a year. We were going to the same school everyday it was really fun. I think during that first year we had a group we would walk with at school during breaks and some people from that group started playing games too with us. And we played regularly during those times too. This last summer, I played every night for about 3-6 hours with the "first friend". To be honest I don't really regret it too much. We had a lot of fun. I think Hamza played games where you rarely interact with people. I was playing csgo and it's pretty fun to mess around, troll, have fun and also be somewhat competitive. I have a lot of fun memories from it. But I found hamza at the end of December. I didn't play as much with my friend after that summer because I have to commute a long time to uni and I don't really feel like playing competitive games even though I found them really fun. So I went from playing everyday to once a week. And yesterday I played again from a 2 week break. I really didn't want to. I kind of hated the idea. I kinda felt forced to cause I was playing every week but I didn't for 2 so I was like, ok maybe I should play and socialise with my friends a bit. It was a lot of fun and genuine laughter during that time. I suggest if you're like me (introverted) and you don't mind talking to the group chat daily instead of playing games daily with them, do it once a week. You will see the beauty in taking the break and also the beauty in having fun with your group. I do also want to get my first friend onto self improvement once I believe I am good enough myself.

Even as a gamer (which sounds so stupid to me), I have to agree: I agree with you because there are so many men (a whole squad I used to play with) who would play video games almost everyday, and they would go to bars and spend essentially all of their cash (they bragged about being broke, and then bragged about faking being broke to get a free game from the GF who later cheated on them, but, they saw their GF as a "Sex toy", it's a long story, but that's all in a nutshell). While I've tried to get them unto no-fap and to help improve their confidence, they would just refuse, they would directly refuse, even when they know it's bad. I've had to leave that squad because they started attacking me and mocking me constantly. That was two years ago, sadly, I'm literally stuck inside my house, I can't go to school in-person, I'm still trying to get more social via in real life, however, I can't. However, I understand why videos can (and mostly are) bad when you don't highly restrict it. While I still play, I'm trying to slowly phase it out (and I made a lot of quick progress), in the span of two weeks, I've went from playing 6-12 hours a week to 2-5 hours (and only in the weekend). I'm planning on taking a two week break so that I can just focus on exercise and reading books and mediating (it'll probably be next week on accident). My advice, I don't really know, the only example I can think of as "Good" videos games would be simulations, but then again, maybe your just wasting time if your not going to apply those skills you've learned in those simulations, and even then, the simulation is just step 1 at most, at some point, you've got to go to step 2 (which is reading and watching KZbin videos around that subject). I would say if I was a father, I would probably only allow my child to play Strategy games and puzzle games for like 1 hour after they complete their homework, but then again, that puts it into the mindset that the games is a reward, and that the work is like a punishment. I don't want to become an authoritarian ass hole as a parent, I don't know, I'll try to just focus on myself.

I actually play a lot of Simulation video games, specifically X-Plane and a few others. I feel that yes, you are indeed true with many aspects, I stream a lot of these flights I do on X-Plane or Cities Skylines. Yes it is bad for your mental health. Truthfully speaking, flight simulations and Cities skylines among others have taught me a lot, specifically flight simulation which taught me how to fly planes and read charts that would otherwise seem stupid to many people who aren't interested in planes. To be honest with you, a lot of when I spend my time on these long flights I do is actually off stream, I tend to spend more of my time with family and even phoning people. Otherwise, I would have probably given up on video games as a whole anyways. Besides, I have been watching a lot of documentries and funny that, a lot of the people who I mention the documentries are probably not really interested but there is a chance for me to speak to them, and they atleast appreciate that I am with them simply because a huge part of their time is spent with a lot of difficulty like relationships and so on. Some people embrace difficulty and get onto simulations since these are actually simulating real life events, such as flying a plane. So you actually have to start up the plane like they (Pilots) do in real life. These games aren't built to have fun but rather to embrace difficulty, I have met many people who embrace difficulty like myself and they are probably the best people I speak to on discord.

Idk man. Video games are a form of art. Like it depends on the game and how much time you spend doing it, but saying there’s nothing positive about games is like saying there’s no value in film or fiction. People showing their creativity and inspiring others is a net positive in my opinion. Personally I’ve always been the type to just blast through single player games and just enjoy the story and world building and music etc. and then not touch another game for weeks or months until something else catches my interest. They’re just like interactive movies with branching story lines and more details to see. I can better understand your perspective based on multiplayer games cuz those often feel like unsatisfying time sinks but even then I love a good historical fps that can make me feel immersed in a certain setting. If it’s no good for you I get it and not everything you say is wrong and it’s worth reflecting on and considering but at the end of the day it’s art and with moderation I wouldn’t call it a vice and I even think it can be somewhat of a positive thing.

I feel like this is more of an attack on instant-gratification overstimulants rather than just videogames. Not every game is league of legends, or dota, or some game meant to suck as much of your time and money as possible while only engaging your brain in unhealthy and addicting ways. There are definitely games like that, and a lot of people are addicted to them and need help to pull themselves out of the hole they’ve dug themselves into. I know people like that, that spend all day doing nothing but overstimulating their brain, and it’s sad. It’s the same thing as guy coming home to spend 4 hours wasting their time on tiktok or porn or some shit. Those are the people I think hamza is talking to here. But not every game is like that, so I think it’s unfair to demerit games as an entire medium. This goes for other things too - a person watching breaking bad and reading Don Quixote is not going to get the same experience as a person watching the shitty full house reboot and reading trashy romance novel. Arguing that playing any game, no matter what it is, is bad, is the same thing as arguing against any other piece of media as well. So of course I agree that the people who spend 8 hours a day playing leave with cheeto dust coating their room need serious fucking help, but not every game is league and not everyone who plays games is a cheeto dust-covered loser.

Can you name a single video game that doesn't rely solely on the overstimulation and instant gratification? Also from a bio-med sci point of view, TV is a fundamentally different reaction centre in the brain, video games are a whole other league of problem compared to TV. TV is by and large a non-issue, and doesn't trigger the same cycles of hundreds of hours a fortnight in an addictive slump, although very rarely it can.

I sold my entire pc gaming set up. I was video game free for 6 months. I felt the most free I ever had. Then I had something happen to me in real life that kinda put me down. Then I spent a ton of money buying a new set up. All immediately I was staying up late again and procrastinating and I stopped working out and started eating like crap again… so I sold it again and I’m never going back. Living in the real world completely is so much better than any video game. As for junk food… go get a burger from McDonald’s, take a bite, chew, and swallow. Then take a look at that burger really closely, then look at your own body in the mirror… and the. Imagine the torment you’re putting your body through. And how insignificant that burger looks. I know how easy it is to succumb to these addictions. I’m a marine guys. I can literally handle pretty much any real world situation and keep that discipline. But video games and junk food? Man is it hard. It just goes to show you how much science goes into these dopamine stimulating things. It’s really really bad. Get out of these habits as soon as possible!

I feel like this is something I wont see eye to eye on ever when it comes to your thoughts on video games. I just feel like what we were surrounded by and how we used video games differs alot. Maybe im the exception or in the majority of people that really doesnt see anything inherintly wrong with it. Im definitely not addicted i can go months without playing them, i only play with my friends or story driven games on my own sometimes, but im never spending more than 3 hours max on a game. The friends I have that play video games are some of the coolest people ive met. Hard working, humble, we always have deep conversation, we uplift each other we go to the gym together. This is probably because most of my friends are muslim so naturally we are always looking to improve ourselves and are all on this self improvement journey. I feel like the video game bad argument can apply to alot of people that are not of faith or people with just little to no self control in general (which can also apply to people of faith). For these type of people then yes i somewhat agree with you that they will probably have to let go of video games to actually progress, but alot of people can balance this and still get far. My friends and family are proof of this and alot of my cousins and friends are doing well for themselves mentally and physically but they still play video games. Thats just my opinion though and I know it wont convince you, just wanted to put my view out there and see if people related to my circumstance since im sure many do. Edit: I have noticed the same few people replying to comments similar to mine talking about my experiences and why I think they aren't bad. I cant lie to you - you guys are just as bad as the "jefferys" hamza talks about. I won't entirely dismiss your opinions but just know you are mimicking a parrot. May Allah guide you guys Edit 2: I never knew this comment would spawn so much conversation, its really interesting seeing every throw in their 2 cents in my experiences and what I think about all of this

I'm in a similar boat, games don't come first, self improvement comes first, but that's not to say that video games can't fit the schedule, it's all about balance and I can control my urges pretty well, I grew up playing video games and now as an adult I find myself playing less and less as the years go by, as the responsibilities pile up, as I get better, stronger and richer and yet I still have an hour or two to squeeze some gaming into my routine, I like hamza but we are NOT gonna see eye to eye on this topic, and that's completely fine!

that's kind of what i am experiencing too. from a young age i was always conditioned by my parents to only play videogames on weekends so it became an unconcious habit of mine for my entire life. Everytime i even try to play videogames on weekdays even though it was a holiday it still felt wrong to me so even on holidays i only play on weekends, and now that i am in highschool and is in a lot of organizations it's becoming very rare for me to even find time to play videogames on weekends, max playtime that i could get on a non busy day is 3 hrs and that's a rare case since now every single one of my assignments and tasks are online and is always strictly monitored, it took me about 9 months just to beat Batman Arkham city lol, but i still enjoy videogames very much and i am feeling very conflicted because while i love videogames, Hamza completely despises it and i love Hamza too man. i've always just tried to ignore what he says about videogames but it always lingers in the back of my mind what if videogames are exactly what hamza is telling me and that it's ruining my life. I'm perplexed

My best friend who is now my room mate is someone i met on csgo like 10 or so years ago, and hes someone whos done so much in my life that i would genuinely die for without blinking. I game, i stream sometimes, but it isnt somthing that takes over my life, and thats alot to say considering that i have austim. Gaming isnt a sin and i dont believe theres anything wrong with it, i get where hes coming from but i will never agree. While i do agree that going out in nature ect and experiancing life is very important and that anything god made is superior, i enjoy gaming, i check up on my friends that i used to work with in highschool and game with them from time to time. But i understand hamza and realise that his hate for games and many other things isnt a entirely a problem with self improvement but with improving himself, its how he views himself and things he deals or has dealt with personally. Im completely against people being absorbed in any kind of media, or idulging in degeneracy (playing porn, indulging in netflix abominations, tiktok ect) but to say that gaming or even the consept of it is somehow somthing that should garner hate of not only the medium but people is something that i will never be able to agree with.

I have the same feeling but it is like an addiction so you’re right in the sense that you slowly have to ween yourself off it, I’ve definitely got better at controlling myself playing them over the years. And I agree, if you’re in the development stage, you need to use all the time you have to improve yourself. And if you’ve finally successful in life, you have a S/O and a house, large group of friends, pets etc and a good job or stable income, and you can find time to fit video games into your life then that’s fine go ahead. I’ve recently been at my mums for the past week away from my gaming rig, and I haven’t really craved or missed it that much. I haven’t even played on my laptop while I’ve been at my mums. I have been spending the time where I haven’t been on the PC by walking and stuff but I do still find it hard to make use of my time, and I spent a lot of my time on my phone instead. It’s hard with Asperger’s and an introverted personality but that’s why I’m on self improvement. I hold my hand up and say I am still a loser, but a LOT less of a loser than I was 2 years ago. Much love Hamza ❤️

Playing games in moderation is actually a good thing. It's more interactive than what most people do at home when they're bored like staying on social media and watching TV/Movies.

I think that's too extreme, I have spend months at a time not playing any video game, and that didn't inherently improved my life, it just increased the time I spend doing other things like watching youtube. I do think that if you play video games but you don't even go to the gym, you have your priorities wrong, but being against entertainment altogether isn't a reasonable position to take, I do think it's too much to play everyday, but a couple times a week, or a couple weekends a month seems perfectly healthy if you at the very least have job and go to the gym every week. Life is too harsh to never have the time to sit down and enjoy a movie, or watch an interesting documentary, listen to a good audiobook, or play a video game, having guilt free fun is also important along as you also have other more meaningful hobbies like going to the gym, learning languages or acquiring marketable skills.

I’m always interested to see your take on a gaming content creator who’s business is to play games and make content on them. Naturally I’ve stopped playing outside of “creating content” when I started watching you content was just interested in your opinions on this.
