I personally don't have a tone of experience with ponds but i think I personally would go with the clay just because I would be scared a liner would get old and cracked and rot I be it very slowly being under the water meaning the sun couldn't get to it that fast but also the seam would scare me and what happens when somthing gets in and pops it just my opinion

The clay will work. I've dug several ponds. It works, but it's not a pool. It is natural to have some water fluctuation over the seasons. Just make sure you make some beds of gravel for fish to spawn. They won't spawn over clay. The advantage being you will always know where those bass beds are. Also put grass and clover seed and straw mulch on the banks after you put the clay down on the slopes. It will take and stop the slopes of the banks washing away. Also this is extra, but since you are starting over. Think about fish structure. I like to use old Christmas trees, and piles of field stones that got dug up while the pond was being dug. You can pick the trees up for free off the side of the road the week after Christmas. Another trick is to go for a drive after a storm and pick up windfalls and use those for structure. In summery. Clay. It lasts forever too.

Flair, I have never tried to build a pond before, but I would say your best bet would be clay and bentonite. I know you have said you want to start the pond by Spring, it is okay to all of us if you do not start because of money or whatever comes up. The main goal is to have a pond in the end, it does not have to come with the convenience to us who watch you. The people who truly enjoy watching you and support you will stick with you until you get it, there is no need to rush into anything if you are not 100%, besides, you always find ways to entertain us no matter what.

Hey Flair, when I was in the military, we actually built a pond in the desert. We had clay and bentonite brought in from all over the states. I do i strongly believe clay and bentonite would be the best option. It might cost more up front but I think your pond would last a whole lot longer without any problems. If you went with a liner, you have to think about the seams, the probability of it having a hole, or getting a hole. Think you will want to but a boat on the pond the prop could cut into the liner. You'd then be right back to square one again anyways having to drain the pond and replacing the liner or just putting clay and bentonite down. I say save yourself the time and go with clay. keep up with the great content, I'm excited to see what's to come in 2024!

Go with bentonite clay but just make damn sure it's done right. Use an articulated compactor and make that clay layer thick and solid. Do it right, do it once, and make damn sure the contractor knows how critical the layer is. Get a consultant and project manager that will make certain the job is done as designed. Go thick and heavy on the clay with no thin spots and compacted solid.

I'd consult bama bass and his pond connections. Seriously reach out to him! ...... id go clay route if it were me and i wouldnt have hesitated about that decision either. Lol. Just remember with the clay option and there is a few leaks there is a product that is poured on the surface, it will mix into the clay and make a permanent seal, and its not expensive.

Talking from experience, my grandfather had a liner on a pond that was about half the size of yours, apart from it being super expensive and extremely difficult to put down, it lasted about 5 years before he started having problems. He had beavers go in and rip it up by trying to dig holes and after a while water actually seeping under the liner from the rain and created sink holes.

If you want to do a clay liner you have to proctor it and do a compaction to 95% which is standard. If you do a poly liner you don’t have to go crazy thick to hold water but large brush or shrubs can impact the liner and cause leaks but you can perform patches to it that are some what cost efficient. For what you want to do with it I would go clay but again growth of vegetation can impact and cause leaks in either liner.

Definitely go clay and bentonite. I do excavating work and that's how we do our ponds here in tennessee. Now granted it is mostly clay around here anyways so normally you can just core the pond with a dozer and it'll hold water even without the bentonite

Flair I'm not an expert. However I work with a company that subs out machines used in soil stabilization. These vehicles mix the existing soil with concrete powder. Thus allowing the creation on retention ponds. I am not sure if you have looked into this option but these rain water retention ponds holds allot of water and located in several sections around these properties we are building.

Bentonite and clay...give it an initial packing and then fence off the pond area and let loose a pack of hogs to pack it in as you slowly as you fill it (we're talking a year or more). Not sure on the surrounding area around the pond but if you have any drainage from nearby hills redirect it towards the pond area as well to supplement the well during winter/spring rains.

I absolutely always would go with the future proofing option and cover all your bases with the Clay and Bentonite over the liner. This is going the extra mile to ensure you won't have to worry about leaks and issues rising. To be sure, yes it will absolutely be more expensive in the short term, but long term, you'll more than likely be thanking yourself for it. Dude, the snow shenangians is what I live for! We almost never get any snow here, and when we do its a light dusting. So to get snow like that would be pure heaven for me man! Sky Cocaine for the win baby!!!

1-2ft thick clay liner compacted with sheepsfoot roller. Clay must be certain moisture level to compact properly, ask a soil tech or pond builder about that. But if it's done right it should hold water like a bathtub. Bamabass had extremely poor sandy soil too and his clay-lined pond holds like a champ.

We did stuff like that when I was a kid, we did Snowmoboarding. Snowboarding behind a snowmobile. Make some jumps that you ice over with water and have a blast! I think long term the clay liner will be better, a rubber one will get holes and may actually lead to warmer water and algae growth. A natural bottom should help both those problems

Have you checked into cement treatment. Plasticity index testing and complete sieve analysis if you decide to clay line. I think a P.I. of around 30 is what I would look for. Next time, maybe look at Geotechnical Engineers to have subsurface testing done. Drilling at different locations running split spoons and rock cores with soil analysis done on samples. Compaction testing based on standard proctor verified by testing with a min of 98% dry density at +4/-3 of optional moisture.

I'd say bentonite. Worst case scenario if there's still a leak you could add dye and see where the leak is and add extra bentonite in that specific area rather than drain the pond and re apply over the whole thing. After say a few months if there are any leaks once you add more bentonite to that area it should help to seal off the whole pond. A liner would be good but if it leaks you'd either have to drain the whole thing or have a diver patch it where bentonite you can just pour more over that area and save money, time, and labor by not needing to drain the pond any

In HVAC when you can't afford a whole brand new system, you slow down and figure out where the leak is and fix the leak. And if you're successful it ends up being a huge savings and your system lasts another ten year's. Find the pond leak and fix the leak. Water is likely cheaper than dirt, if I had to guess. So if you have to do it twice to get the leak fixed, so be it.

I definitely don't have the money you do to take the chances you're willing to take, but if I can see the pond I would tell you exactly how much and where it needs to be done but it can be done. Think it's a better decision than the liner liners is the temporary patch where the clay it'll be permanent if done right?

With the clay & bentonite blanket you have to be careful on what species you introduce to the lake, Anything that burrows will post a leak risk (Crayfish, Catfish etc) In my opinion a seamless liner would be the best route. You can always cover the liner with natural substrate

Can you do a test of the clay and bentonite solution? Can you do this on a small portion of the pond to see if it will work before you commit to the whole thing? Maybe use the excavator to create a mini wall if you don't already have that in your pond? Also, can you get someone to sponsor the pond rehab?

Bentonite and clay pond liners have several advantages over rubber liners. Natural Sealing Properties: Bentonite, a type of clay, possesses unique swelling characteristics when in contact with water. This swelling forms a tight seal, effectively preventing water from penetrating the liner. This self-sealing ability makes it highly efficient in reducing leakage. Cost-Effectiveness: Bentonite liners are often more affordable than rubber alternatives. The natural abundance of clay as a raw material contributes to lower production costs, making it an economically viable choice for pond lining projects. Environmentally Friendly: Clay liners are considered more environmentally sustainable compared to rubber liners, which may involve synthetic materials. Bentonite is a natural resource, and its extraction and processing generally have a lower environmental impact than the production of synthetic rubber. Adaptability to Substrate: Bentonite liners can conform to the underlying substrate, providing a more adaptable and flexible solution. This adaptability is especially beneficial in areas with uneven terrain, where a clay liner can better conform to the landscape contours. Resistance to UV Degradation: Rubber liners may be susceptible to UV degradation over time, potentially leading to a decrease in their effectiveness. Bentonite liners, being a natural material, tend to be more resistant to UV damage, contributing to their long-term durability. While rubber liners certainly have their applications, the unique properties of bentonite and clay make them a compelling choice for pond lining, particularly when considering factors such as cost, environmental impact, and adaptability. I’m looking forward to seeing what you picked in your next vid. I love your channel and I’m looking forward to trying some beefcake jerky. sometime

Especially after watching the Bamabass channel and how they did it, it just seems to be the best way, and as you've seen, their lake is absolutely awesome so if you get the clay and bentonite going I think you're golden plus all of the content you can do with the lake its gonna make you bank

There also the idea of putting a fence around it and fill it with pigs for a while and they will pack the dirt good. Old timer once told me that I thought huh that’s a creative thought. But still cost money unless you could rent the pigs but still cost ya. Id go with the clay and bentonite

Howdy, I'm sure someone has already mentioned trying this, but just look for a housing development/building, being built in an area with traditionally higher in clay content subsoil. Just get ahold of the GC and let them know you're looking for subsoil. These guys have to pay by the truckload to dump it somewhere. You'll be saving em roughly $350 per load they can bring to you. Just make sure you have your dozer ready to spread it as they're bringing it in.

Honestly, I would go with the Clay and Betnite. I don’t have any experience with building ponds or anything like that, but I just believe that the better option is to betnite it.

Do it the natural way, a liner will leak over time. Once that happens you will have to replace the whole thing which will cost you even more money in the long run. I have a backyard koi pond it’s about 1,500gals and I haven’t had to replace my liner in over fourteen years but I have a over hang that cover the pond so it doesn’t get too much sun exposure. If your liner is exposed to the sun it will deteriorate much faster and the cost to build an overhang for your pond would be outrageous. Having trees near by to help shade your pond is a plus. Having a liner with trees near by would also be a potential problem with roots penetration so like I said best to do the clay and bentonite. Good Luck! With whichever option you decide to go with. I love your videos and watch you all the time. Keep up the good shiet my guy!

Go with the clay but have it layered then do gravel and then add pond plants and wait a little before adding fish so the plants have time to add more oxygen to the water

Yeah honestly the dam is main priority. But as long as you walk it in good with the dozer in 1-2 ft lifts with some good clay it'll hold

There is a product you can put in the pond that will get sucked up in any leak and expand to patch any leaks in a bentonite liner. Getting a soil analysis and then getting bentonite would be best.

What you really want to do if you don't want it fluctuating over the seasons or possibly drying up is a liner then top it with the clay. A big part of this is how much land is draining into it. The 2 ponds we have are just clay and they fluctuate significantly but our advantage is that almost 10k acres drains into it. it's at the base of a massive hill. The other downside to that is one time during a massive rain, the water washed over one side of the dam. it was really bad. RWD1 tower pipe got washed out and it completely drained the water tower. it was epic bad... well, there are a few thoughts. I'll let you put em together into whatever you want.

Have done many ponds with just bentonite, you don't need to add clay also. Buy the product, spread it yourself then till it in and fill pond. When bentonite gets wet it turns into a clay like material. When tilled into the soil and gets wet it heals itself and will hold water.
