My dad had a stroke 9 years ago. I have been his primary caregiver since then. Now, he is in-home hospice; his days are numbered. I am his POA, executor, and sole heir. His estate is valued between 700-800k USD. I am 56, single, disabled and collect SSDI. I have no family to speak of. When my dad dies I have no one and have no reason to stay -- I have to find a new life somewhere doing something. I have no knowledge of investing. I am afraid of risky financial ventures. I have been somewhat preparing for dad's departure by watching YT videos about SE Asia focusing on Thailand. I need to figure out the most prudent and conservative route to invest...

@kitty_s234562 күн бұрын
@desdenova - I agree. You are a good, caring child & person. It's tough to be a caregiver - I've been one. I don't have advice re: investing. But if you're looking to base yourself in TH, I think Pattaya (Jomtien) or Hua Hin (for beach) or Chiang Mai (for mountains) are good, soft landing spots. CM (or the north) is also a bit cheaper than the beach areas. Disadvantage: air quality is bad for ~3 months during burning/ smokey season. Ppl living there use that time to travel to other parts of TH or nearby countries (if they can afford to). Good luck in your future plans.
@henryorhenri2 күн бұрын
My suggestion: find a Fee Only Financial Advisor, who is a professional (unlike me) and will give you advice without trying to sell you investments that pay commissions. Tell them you are a retired and disabled person who is looking to invest for a long term, stable income that minimizes risk. They'll understand your situation and guide you to investments that are very low risk and produce a stable income... good, boring advice like Chris preaches, but this kind of investing rarely gets a million KZbin views so it's not popular. Following the "4% rule" theory, your inheritance of $700k should be able to produce $28k a year in income, or around $2000-ish a month. That plus your SSDI (which you can take overseas, no worries) is plenty for a nice life in Thailand or a number of other places. Sell everything, go travel for a while, and find where feels like home to you.
@GinJ13372 күн бұрын
Not a financial advisor but retired early on dividends in my 30s. I highly suggest you learn about dividend paying ETFs and other types of funds. That way you eliminate risk from single stocks and never have to worry about earnings or what any CEO says or does again. Mix 5 to 10 of them and you are good. A lot of people like SCHD for example. PBDC for business development companies. Just two examples. A portfolio paying out 4%-7% is definitely achievable that way.

Another option for investing, 10 years Treasury bond is about 4.62% now, can go to 5% and over soon. Treasury is safest. However, it pays interest twice a year, not monthly. Try to catch it monthly auction. If you have Fidelity or Vanguard, you can buy through these bonds the day before auction day.

The key to investing in stocks is not to fall in love / infatuation with any company. If the company cuts its distribution like AT&T did a couple yrs ago than you cut your loses and don't fall in love with the stock because you owned it for 10 yrs +.. Once retired it maybe better to buy a diversified fund than picking and choosing individual stocks which some income focused funds pay a higher yield than the individual stocks (if your objective is to generate a higher current cashflow rather than focusing on growth than income focused funds are a better choice).
@RetireandGo2 күн бұрын

CORRECT Chris!! Dull is beautiful with dividend stocks. Pipelines are an excellent choice. Also RIO and PICK as they are involved in essential commodities. My holdings also have some BDC's and REIT's. Also check out some CEF's and ETF's to have diversified holdings within your sector of choice, such as health care or Tech. My portfolio is averaging about 7-8%. Even during the turn down during COVID when some companies cut their dividends, I still received 90% of my pre-Covid dividends. As of now they are all back were they were and then some! Best way to finance your travels.

I have done well with FEPI ETF dividend. They are not a long term investment in my opinion, But the payout has been great and is every month. You just have to watch it closely to know when to sell your shares. As long as they give what they are giving I will stay with them but will sell if I sense that they will collapse. Its a higher risk investment.but sometimes you need to take some risk. Otherwise I usually go with less risky and less yield stocks.

Thanks for sharing your strategy. There are some solid performing dividend/distribution paying ETF's here in Australia. Even better if you can claim back some of the tax they pay on your behalf. Downside is often low or no growth in the value of the underlying ETF price. I'm assuming that your 6% return doesn't include increases in the value of the underlying stock. That increase in unrealised capital gain also provides a hedge against inflation, particularly if you are realising a 6% return on the ever increasing value of your portfolio, thereby increasing the dollar return whenever the stock price increases. Your yield as a % of your original investment then becomes 7%, 8% and so on over time. So it may work well for you as a short-term strategy, but I suspect it will pay off even better over the long-term. Boring is good.

How do you plan to deal with inflation in the long run? My biggest concern is inflation. Even 2% annual inflation can cause a dramatic increase in cost of living (10 years = 20% increase, 20 years = 40+% increase). And most countries will likely create inflation to make it easier to pay off their debts. So while I feel I have a balanced budget now, I'm not sure how I can continue to grow my monthly income to offset the likely inflation costs of the future. Any thoughts?

Warren Buffett likes to tell folks who ask why so few people are able to emulate his success that it's because nobody starts out looking for a "get rich slowly " scheme. Unfortunately, those are the o nly ones that work. Choose good companies with solid financials, or invest in index funds to rise with the tide. Day trades, covered calls, and crypto are fancy ways of saying "I'm gambling."

I love that quote from him The best

As much as you think crypto is "gambling", there are fairly clearly defined 2.5 years "up" and 1.5 years "down" trends with the Bitcoin cycles. If you just buy in roughly 18 months after the previous cycle top, you are pretty much guaranteed to have 10x or more returns two years later.

@@hubertcumberdale2651Past performance does not guarantee future performance. In fact, because crypto is propped up on a "bigger fool" fallacy, the market will eventually find the largest fools and punish them severely. Stock owners actually own a piece of a company. Crypto addicts are betting on team red.

Chris I know you are smarter than me but honestly I don’t like 90% of your dividend stock
@RetireandGo2 күн бұрын
You are probably smarter than me !!

No Chris, but you given me a lot of great advice and nobody has a crystal ball but most of your stocks are oil energy and that is a dying industry and dying fast. I am a huge Tesla fan and Elon fan. I walk the walk and both I and my son have a model 3 and they are the bomb of the world but 99% of the public are clueless . Next I like the monthly dividend ETF’s, way better than the quarterly energy dividend stocks you have. I am going to Thailand in early February and try to copy your amazing lifestyle. I would love to meet you . Actually I am a white farmer from Kansas
