Metric units here. Tolly! I have the same D5 on my 2005 XC70 (~220k km). Unfortunately I experienced that accident which you we're afraid of. I saw that crankshafts pulley's outer part flying and rolling in the air next to my driver's window while driving around 110 km/h on the highway. I immediately switched off the engine and drove offside. WARNING! ⚠️ Do not take out the key in a moving car otherwise you will block steering. The aux belt had major damage (2 teeth were eaten off), but luckily it still stayed on. I guess it was a miracle & fast reaction time which saved the timing belt therefore the engine. Had to tow the car, change the pulley and aux belt. From my experience and gathered info I would recommend to change crankshafts pulley every 200k. I hope I had correct ODO (190k) when bought the car. Correct me if necessary.

Lucky escape there for you too even after the failure. If I had ignored my belt squealing I’d have been on the motorway moments later! As mine had already been changed I can’t be sure when it was changed. I did the timing belt at 300k which was well overdue, it’d already been done twice. I think knowing what I know now I’d change the dampener every second belt change or every change if it’s been 5 years which could be more the issue with mine. All my distances in miles, I think the timing belt interval is 90k and I know that 310,685 miles is 500,000 kilometres.

Had my belt fail on my Twin Turbo D5 S80 earlier this year, was due to drive to the Arctic circle 4 days later. Fortunately I turned the car off before it got pulled into the timing belt (it had made its way up inside the cover) Managed to fix the belt and drive to the Arctic circle and back, 5,000 miles, lowest temperature was -36 degrees! The car ran better than it ever had. Volvo forever!
@IAMASPANNER2 жыл бұрын
Did it fail due to age or just unlucky? Those later D5s do seem to have their issues. A friend of mine had the same happen on a 2010 and it did find its way into the timing belt and pulled the idle pulley straight out of the block. Congrats on the Arctic journey, I’d love to do that. I’ve just done Germany at around 2,000 miles 👍

Good video , one other hidden horror thing on these is the rear brake pipes where they connect to the rear Flexi hoses. Road salt muck gathers and cakes around the bracket the pipe union nut and spring clip , and the pipe can break there if impacted by stones or wobbled when changing the Flexi. Fortunately the pipe has a union beside where the rear hanger for the exhaust centre section is so the parts you have to change are not overly long . (Unlike this blurb) Cheers Andy .

Thanks for this info regarding the pulleys. Timing belt and idler pulleys are a job on my list for the near future... not looking forward to it!

Are you sorting the valve block on the first one?
@gavinstirling70882 жыл бұрын
@@IAMASPANNER Yes, hopefully. I bought a Transco valve body modification kit from the US and have carried out the modifications to the body. It may or may not fix the issues, need to get it out on the road with a warmed up gearbox. Problem being that I can only legally drive it to an MOT station (with insurance in place) as I don't have trade plates. One of the problems us DIY mechanics face in these cases.

Just about to do mine along with swapping the gearbox from 5 speed to 6 speed. Actually I’m using the flywheel from the donor car as whether it’s original or not on the 171k donor car it’s in very good condition.

I would say the reason the original pulley is so expensive is because it is built to last.... I have 440,000 miles on mine and the pulley (as far as I can see is still original). If i need a replacement, I will replace with a low mileage used Volvo part!

Hi mate maybe you can help. I have A D5 S60. The steering is wandering on dual carriageways/motorways, when I brake it pulls to one side (partially due to imbalanced brakes). With potholes around town the steering seems to fall/steer towards these potholes. Two different mechanics both said it seems to be control arms. They replaced the passenger side lower control arm, barely any difference. It was suggested its probably the subframe bushes. I assume these have never been changed. It also seems to be easy enough to do at home just parked on the road outside. Is it a safe bet to say its the bushes, and if so, should I replace them, or just fit the polyurethane inserts instead?
@gavinstirling70882 жыл бұрын
I sheared off one of the sub frame bolts on my XC90 and it's been a huge pain to drill it out. I'm going to have to fit a much longer bolt with a locknut on the end. Just be aware that the sub frame bolts have a habit of being corroded in place, especially the nearside front (UK spec) as the salt water gets trapped in the fixing. Unfortunately you need to remove the bolt whatever you decide to install. Perhaps you could thoroughly clean the area then apply a light smear of grease, to try and see how much movement there is after driving a few miles?
@IAMASPANNER2 жыл бұрын
I really want to change mine but I’m always in a rush when working on this car as it’s my daily. I doubt mine have been replaced though and I don’t have wandering steering. Have you had 4 wheel alignment done? One thing my car does do is steer when braking hard and I put that down to having a new shock absorber on one side and not the other (due to budget at the time of failure), you should change both sides at the same time. Depending on mileage you could also have a dead spot in the steering rack which is what caused me some play in the steering before.
