Stripping down Volvo D5 (D5244T10) engine

The accessory belt failed on my D5 engine, found it's way into the timing cover and destroyed the engine. The timing skipped and smashed the lifter guides in the head for all 10 intake lifters. The engine had 388,000ks and was in otherwise good condition.

Rubber from the engine block was the seal from the inside of the thermostat, it is the main problem of thermostat failure. The core is working fine but it loses that rubber and the thermostat remains open, it needs another full housing with thermostat including. Big job on the car.

I bet that manifold stud has been replaced at some point and it hasn't been dried out before putting the new stud in causing hydraulic pressure to cause that bulge

Thanks for sharing. Just had a water pump replacement go wrong, belt installed badly then test driven. My lifter seats are also sheared.

Good reminder to check the condition of your belts and idlers/tensioners I think I might have a noisy idler or tensioner it may be time to do a belt job and replace those and the drive belt. My timing belt is only ~60.000 Kilometers old that's in good condition but im questioning my accessory belt.

Never seen a T10 variant of this engine before... Twin turbos? This was the last evolution before they discontinued the D5244.

Common problem on the d5 engine. No big issue, other head and your off again.

Good to see that the head design may save the pistons. I have a V60 D5 with broken head due to belt snap. I am just going for a head replacement also. Good to see that the forces of the valve hitting the piston are directed to the top of the head. Do we need to be afraid of residue in the oil because of all the broken seats?

There's always something worth worrying about, but the chunks in my case we're pretty big, unlikely to go anywhere important. Flush the oil anyway and hope for the best.

same exact thing happened to me at 140k miles on a XC60 205hp. I'm getting a used engine with 66k and having it swapped at my local garage. Wondering if I can salvage something from the old one.

Probably not. Mine went straight to scrap. The only thing of value is the head, and without it the rest is junk.

I have some accessories still hanging around in tubs, but the long engine all went to scrap years ago.

What can i do my car suddenly of while driving timing bet cut in several pieces and broke the engine head , after i replace another engine head, again 40 kms drive my car belt was cut and broke the head again i spend lots of money 🥺 , kindly plz help me if anyone of solution about this problem, I'm from India and volvo parts costs 5 times more compare to other countries, thats y i want solution

That is an unlucky sequence of events. There is a fix in the later model engines to prevent the belt finding its way into the timing cover that can be retrofit, but you don't really have a choice but to replace the head again or give up with the car.
