Why I Left Music

Whether music is permissible in Islam has been a heated topic among modern Muslims (thought this does not mean that it's unclear in terms of fiqh). I was very much into music once. I used to be in a choir that performed at the golden hall in Vienna. I used to write songs and perform on different occasions. I struggled when I was told that music is haram. After researching, inquring, experimenting and experiencing, I decided to abandom music. It turned out to be a great move. Watch this video to know more.

Asalamu Alaikum brother Isa, just for information, please don't feel offended, but the shirt with the rabbit logo you are wearing in this video is a logo of a company that produces Zina and nudity content astaghfirullah. You probably don't know about that, but in the future please try not to wear such logo on your body. May Allah remain guiding us all.

@Felix x sorry brother, the name of the company is not important to know, neither to spread, I don't want curious brothers and sister weak in imam to look into something haram that is sinful. What matters is that I'm trying to give a friendly warning to brother Isa that the logo he is wearing represents pure haram and looks bad for him and for Muslims in general. People might think, how can this guy preach Islam but wears something that is from Zina and nudity? People will question his imam. I hope he doesn't know he is wearing something representing haram and maybe if he wants to edit his video or do something else about it may Allah reward him for his works and effort.

When I used to listen to music, I remember that after spending hours of earphones plugged in my ears I’d slowly notice my mood turning gloomy. Over listening repeatedly to songs made me feel depressed. SubhanAllah since stopping I now nearly never use earphones nor find myself needing music to work. Walking anywhere I make sure to have a tasbeeh with me so I am always doing dhikr. If you make yourself spend the silence remembering Allah and praising him, you will find it less necessary to fill the silence with music. Also, don’t forget to take it slowly, removing music from your life as doing it all at once will surely lead to a relapse

Tasbeeh is a bid'ah Abdullah Ibn 'Umru says: "I saw the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم perform the [Tasbih] using [the joints] of his right hand". As Salt IbnBurham said that: "On day Ibn Mas'oud passed by a woman who was holding a rosary in her hand and doing [Tasbih], his reaction was to destroy it and throw it on the ground; then when he passed by a man who was doing his [Tasbih] with pebbles, his reaction was to kick the pile and say "you have anticipated, you have made an innovation by exceeding your rights and you have surely believed that you are surpassing the knowledge of the companions of Mohammed صلى الله عليه وسلم!"

Ya brother, 'Isa, I have the almost same exact story. 11 years I was an atheist and really into music, I even dug deeper about music history and it was literally my life. After reverting back to Islam, I keep pretending not to talk about music because I believed that music is haram when there's women, alcohol, and cursing words. This year I started to become hafiz, by first memorizing Juz 30th. It changed my view on the hadith about music totally, I'm not against it anymore. I feel finding more contentment just by listening and reciting the Quran than listening to any kind of music. and yes, music is not aligned with my goal for memorizing the Quran. So I stopped playing it. When my friends asked me a lot of question about my changes, I tend not to debate them and say, "it's haram, you must stop listening it". I just say, just read the Quran and reflect, rethink our whole lives with Quran then you'll know why music is unnecessary for the contentment of our soul.

You embraced Islam not too long ago. In this short time what you have achieved as far as islamic theology, knowledge , many of us born muslims have not or cannot achieve in our life time. I feel such a shame !! At the same time you give me great inspiration and encouragement that inshAlloh I can be like you If I try hard. Gusun Naz . BarakALLAH feek brother. I totally relate to what you went through after you stopped being involved with haram music. When I stopped listening to music it gave me real senses of reality in life while I notice the ones who still listen to it live in illusional desires of harmful deceptions and they have no real sense of purpose of life/values. I used to want to be popular to the people when I used to listen to haram music and dance to it. Alhamdulillah I now want to be popular to ALLAH after I stopped listening to haram music. Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. taught me that the love of money and/or fame are the main killers of faith(iman). I also learned that listening and dancing to haram music creates hypocrisy in the heart, hence making us hypocrites.

Alhamdulillah sister, last year I accepted Islam also. I know it's hard to omit music completely. Even I was so drowned in music so much that I spend most of salary on buying branded earphones. But when I understood how harmful it is, I don't know by help of Allah I almost stopped hearing it. I replaced it with audio story and Islamic lectures. I won't say I have completely omitted from my life but very rare I hear that also if someone puts on music coz I can't force someone to stop. So don't worry, you no need to force yourself. Keep believe in Allah and he will help you forget what is harmful for you.

Music is fun, but not useful. But the Qur’an is interesting and useful..My father always reprimanded me because I listened to music very much and says that music keeps me away from God. Music makes me not read the Qur’an..but before I indulged in listening to music, I used to read the Qur’an and it was really a very good feeling .. I was sooo much addicted to music in one time of my life so much so that I could not even sleep without music. I did not find peace but when I heard music it was all good. Now however I am trying to leave music like totally and I am still on this path and while in this path I realized one thing that is, the thought of suicide (Yes I had those thoughts because of my addiction to music was just wayy to much and you know how addiction goes) totally faded and the thought of sadness is fading gradually (Back in those day I used to feel sad and lonely constantly). I started to feel the fulfillment that I never felt before. That's my story. I recommend the people who will see this reply to just try one or two days without music and see what happens and increase the days gradually if you feel like it. I am talking from the perspective of music addict because I came to know that music is haram while in the journey to leaving music. So yeah try it and may Allah make you feel peace and show you the right path Ameen.

eldarmario presario I really feel sorry for you because you don’t understand and you are blinded by your own ideas. I am talking because I have experienced both sides, I used to listen to music all day long for many years and as I said it gives you an unhealthy boost of emotions which are all fake and then when the effect is gone you are back to reality and it kinda sucks. Listen leave religion aside here ok ? Music is like a drug when u consume it you want more and more and you don’t feel so great without it. So what you have done here is you created a need for something to feel happy or motivated or whatever, while instead you could have had all these things from within your self. The human body works like this If you give it an outside source of anything it will rely on it and it will stop producing it’s own so tell me why on earth would I do something like that ?? I don’t wanna force anything on but for you to understand you have to try it your self and once you begin your journey you will realize how attached and addicted you have become to it, you can’t even live without it but at the end when you are fully healed your mind will become much clearer and you will feel free for once in your life.

@@yusrilyusril2381 but there's a saheeh hadeeth from Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam about the prohibition of musical instruments and several other hadeeth in regards of this matter. And there's also terms of 'lahwal hadeeth' in the early aayah of Surah Luqman, ibnu Mas'ud radiallahu anhu, the sahabah as mentioned in the above video, sworn that it refers to singing. These are the sunnah because whatever our Prophet said was also revelation.

alhamdulillah, wassalautu wassalmu ala rasulillah. I've been 18 years old when i first introduced to music being impermissible, i felt so bad, and i said to myself 'no way'. back then i was consumed by music, barely had passion to anything else. when i started practicing islam, taking islam as a religiong rather than an identity, i was 23 years old. by that time i totally forgot about the 'controversy' of music in islam. i have been more into whorshipping allah, more into learning and reciting quraan. in 6 months time, i started to feel very bad when i put on music and listen. i used to get overwhelmed by very dissatisfying feeling over music being streamed into my heart and soul. music lost its entertaining effect on me and became torture. at that time i recalled my college friend who advised me about music being haram, the memory actually struck me. and i was happy that music actually portrayed as mazameeru-shaitan (sounds of satan?), because it really felt that way back then, and until this moment. That brother when he advised me, he listened to all what i had to say about music is good, he just stayed silent, smiling, and simply changed the topic. Al hamdulillah who guided us, we wouldnt be guided unless allah guides us.

Thank you for the personal story, Isa. I could relate to your 1 month expirement. Mine was not deliberate, but I gradually came off of music. I used to play it loudly in the car rides home, but came to the realization that it is really distracting. Why not spend that time listening to a podcast, or a lecture or Quran? I noticed that I stopped listening to music altogether and, as you mentioned, my mind was clearer. Thank you again Isa.

shaan shaif It’s not easy. My motto is not to stop but to exchange the habit with another habit. Now i can say that i enjoy listening to Qur’aan. When i commute to my work, 1,5 hour, i listen to Qur’aan nonstop. I also listen to roqiyah, samples of different verses. After hearing so many reciters, i hunt youtube to find the most soothing reciter. I’ve found a few. And oh my God. If this feeling i am feeling is on this earth. I can only imagine how i can and will feel in Jannah.

shaan shaif May Allah make it all easy for us. Ameen. Stop it all at once and develop new habits. Listen to nasheed or even to only vocals version of the songs you listen to. If you sing along to songs. Sing along to the nasheed and recite out loud when listening to Qur’aan. It takes 4 days to develop a habit. That’s what i realized. You can do it!

I agree that once u start listening to music especialy ur favorite music, it still play on ur mind. Me having different experince, brother. When i was addict to music (listening, singing, playing the instrument) there was a light whisper on my my heart that i should turn it off, i should stop it. But i still dont get it. I still play it. Sing every song that i love sincerely. But then Qadarallah something happened to me. I got sick. Started from 2005. I had suffered something. In 2010 the doctor diagnosed me as a bipolar but i decide to take another opinion which is from deen's perspective. From it know about Ruqyah. The Roqi (a person who do Ruqyah syar'i 's methode) suggest me to do several things. Don't play the music is one of them. The curiosity is come to me "is music haram?" I stared listening to ustadz nouman ali khan, and syafiq riza basalamah (our local ustadz) lectures about music. Then i choose to leave it. Alhamdulillah, biidznillah i feel better now although the distraction inside of me still makes me uncomfortable. Ps: please be careful about the lyrics also, the words that u said, it can be part of ur do'a. *i try my best to use english, sorry for the wrong grammar btw. (An Indonesian sister)

I left music a month after I became a more practising Muslim. I remember I had a dream about being a Mujahidah who was in a war with the devils. It was a horrifying dream that had inspired me to leave music I guess. I used to have over 400 Korean songs in my music playlist. I had deleted all of the songs I had and it wasn't hard for me to do that because I knew I had to do it for the sake of Allah.. now I'm not really interested in music except for Nasyeed..
