You can get maternity benefits in contract jobs as well especially EI during the maternity leave period. All you require to do is pay EI component on behalf of both employee & employer for a certain time period before you become eligible for it. Another big benefit of contract position is that you can easily claim certain tax benefits that full time employee can not.

Well....EI only gives you the bare minimum ($570ish per week) that isn't a lot in our expensive Canada. However, a lot of companies provide top-ups to the EI as a benefit to the mom/dad - yes, you can get top up on paternity too. In my last company they topped up EI to 100% of the salary. My current one tops up EI with their payment to get you to 75% of the salary. Only one condition in both companies, once you came back from mat/pat leave you had to stay with them for another 12 months, if you resigned before that the benefit was supposed to be clawed back.

Whenever they are layoffs the contractors are the last ones to get laid off as they have no obligations to the employer. The full-time employees are unfortunately laid off first as they are owed severance and higher payouts depending on how long they have been with the company. Recently, wealth -simple laid 169 people in Canada; all of them were full-time, not contractors.

Think you are confusing contract work and being self-employed/freelancing and accepting various contracts. There are a lot of people working in an office for an employer just like full-time job on a contract basis so without benefits.
