I was surrounded by animals as a kid. Fell off horses, got bitten by loads of different species. Ended up spending 8 years volunteering at a big cat sanctuary and raising lions and tigers! Kids should learn at an early age that animals are not toys but actual living beings with feelings and fears and frustrations. I feel that kids who are taught how to behave around animals are better with empathy later in life.

100% agreed! It's so important to teach kids that even though they have a pet, they still have to respect their boundaries! Punishing an animal for defending themselves when they're scared when the child is in the wrong will create entitled toxic people too on the other end of that spectrum!

Do you know what,I think that's a good point.i got bit by my aunts boxer in the face.but I was probably doing something annoying that he never liked.think I was 5 or 6.i had to have a few stitches on my face.but it never scared me.i don't even remember it happening so it can't of affected me mentally,if you know what I mean.i love animals & always help them.recently I rescued a crow with a broken leg.love what your doing.

Totally agree Yma Htebazile. My mom is a horse trainer with loads of other animals. I've been around all sorts of exotics from snakes, frogs, and birds to horses, pigs, cats, and dogs. You better believe I have been bit by those pesky horses my mom would warn me not to give treats to because they were still working on taking treats gently. But guess what, I did not and my little finger looked an awful lot like a carrot. Did I heed my mother's warnings after that, you better believe it. Kids learn by experience and consequences. I think animals are the best teachers because as other viewers have mentioned, they teach children empathy and patience for others while also teaching that forcing others to do something does not always get you what you want. Great job Jamieleigh for not only training your child and clients, but other children as well in a safe and controlled environment.

Charlie handled that bite like a boss! I know that a lot of kids would have probably been like "nope" after that, but Charlie barley batts an eyelash, and then gets right to training him with you and Capri. And I approve,of how you let her get bit. You assesed the situation, knew the bird wasn't a hard biter, and let it happen so she could learn to respect the bird. LOVED this video!

Shout out to Charlie's mom (I think? Haha) too! How she immediately went "he said no, he doesn't want to be picked up", it's so important to teach kids that animals also have their wants and needs that deserve to be met and respected!! 💕 great video!!

Give her a few more years, she'll probably have her own section on the channel - with her own personal bird projects. The more I watch of this, the more I want to get one, but ... I have my doubts; Jamie Leigh says most people shouldn't be keeping birds of any kind and I'm probably one of those people, therefore I don't want to commit one of these wonderful animals to a horrible life (albeit unintentionally). I still enjoy watching Jamie, Capri and Elle though (LiveLaughBirds), among a few others and watching their interactions and training of their beautiful birds.

We have a small exoctic bird store in my city called Casa La Parrot. Unfortunately a lot of their birds are kept in cages that are too small but they do have quite a few cageless macaws and other large birds. There was a cockatoo on a perch near the front and my mom, dad, and I went to say hello. The bird put his foot up asking to be held. I could just read it's body language. Where as I could tell with other birds that they just wanted to take a bite of finger dinner. So I talked to my parents about what I learned on this page, about how it's really easy to tell what birds want from the way they communicate.the Cockatoo on the perch ended up taking a small flight to my hand and while I wasn't able to praise it with treats, one of the employees said they had never seen it fly to a stranger before. It was cool to be able to communicate with that bird with everything I learned from this channel.

I hope you know what I wonderful foundation you're teaching/providing for your daughter because connecting to animals I believe is one way of staying connected to the earth and how life works (not to mention that it gives kids an early explanation of what death is and happens to all things eventually). Carpi and Lefty are adorable. That pic of Charlie and Lefty says it all. She still loves him and didn't mind the little nip at all. My nieces and nephews have been bitten by a few critters over the years. They quickly learned how and when to handle them. One typical response it, "You told me not to do that, now I know why." What's a little pinch of a bite? Kids hurt each other more rough housing.

We have had a flock of wild, black hooded parakeets, (according to my bird book)for the 1st time, in 4years, here in Central Florida. They are similar in size to your two parrots. It's been so much fun to have a camera with zoom lense this year, to photograph them from afar. Your daughter and her friend, remind me of my daughter, at their age. (She's grown up now, and out of state. Also we didn't ever have birds) I hope to have a bird in the future. I enjoy learning along with your excellent, practical, kind, humourous videos. Thank you very much.

I remember having one of those when I was younger, my dad works for the city of Clearwater and he had to take down some pole and it had a nest of them in it. We kept one, and named him Rio. He was a wonderful lil guy, but ended up somehow getting rope tied up around his wing from a rope toy we bought him, and I have no idea how it happened, but it somehow killed him :(

@@nascr7015 Condolances for your little bird. At least you now know what type of toy isn't safe. It's interesting about the birds nest in the pole. Because of observing the large flock of parakeets, with my zoom lense camera, I could see a tall pole in distance from my back yard. The birds would perch on the wire and I noticed, a few going into a hole near the top of pole, occasionally. After the main flock migrated farther away, three of them stayed in the neighborhood and would call out, every time they flew back and forth, over my yard. Then falcons or hawks nested in the pole. I started to see two fluffy young ones perched on the wire, with parent going to and from the hole. Actually there are at least 3 holes near the top. After young ones grew and flew away, I noticed two parakeets returned, going to and from the nesting area. I am sometimes watching in early morning or evening, to see what happens. They are so cute. These lovely green parakeets really sparked my enjoyment of birdwatching in general. A lake is a few blocks away, and some undeveloped acres of land. So we get a variety of bird visitors throughout the year. I always have a bird feeder that attracts cardinals, etc.I looked up food for wild parakeets/parrots, but have not put food out. Not very practical during the rainy season, etc. Hope your future with birds is happy :)

Its not like it was a Macaw bite like you say and better she learns that in this way than with a bigger bird or a dog. The shock factor of the bite today was likely to be just as impactful on her memory as a bigger consequence might have been and sure she will look to learn more rather than piling it. Animals have feelings and needs too, ask too much and NO means no for them too.

Capri already knows so much at such a young age, that's so nice how you're teaching her so she'll know how to act later on in life.

You did the right thing by letting Charlie experience what would happen without someone showing her. I know you knew the bird wouldn't bit her hard and just a little scare now will help her from a Big Bite by a Big Bird that would hurt. Great job girls! They are just too adorable!

I totally agree with the let children learn consequences. We have raised our children too the same way within reason. I think you are wonderful. You have so much passion for your animals and even though i dont have birds anymore, i still love watching your whole family work with them. Its awesome.

Lefty is such a gentle bird, and so good with kids! He knows how to clearly communicate what he's thinking and feeling and even when he bites, he's super gentle and makes sure he's not seriously hurting anybody. What a good boy

I think its so cute how Capri kinda jumped in front of Lefty when Charlie was moving her hand towards him, saying “he doesn’t want to” in reference to picking him up. Their relationship is so adorable.

I'm blown away by the bird stepping up on the little girl's fingers. My daughter had small hands when she was 4 and our Sun would only step up on her wrist. When she was 9 years old our Sun finally stepped up on her finger and she came running to me excited about that.

I think you should get a treat Jamie lol. To train and have the patience required for any bird, but to hold the attention span of children as well, and being the mom of 2 daughters I found girls to be a little more flighty, " pun intended 😘". Seriously though how cute are these cousins dressed the same. Really special to have cousins the same age, as my girls did also. I friendship to last a lifetime of special times in their lives 🥳🦄🐔🦜. Once again capri is so adorable with " I want to marry him👰🧚‍♀️💝". Cant get any sweeter then that. Thx for sharing.

Constructive & interesting video! Agree 100% with you the importance for children (and adults) understanding cause and consequence + stopping unwanted behaviours as soon as possible. You're a great trainer of humans too btw :-D

My Budgie never wanted to be near me when I got him. But now he want's to be sitting on me every chance he gets! He comes when called, and sometimes it can be overwhelming when trying to do things. But I Luv the little chicken and play with him daily. I never used treats or clickers, just speech to train him. He can get a bit randy sometimes though. I Luv the blue and yellow little chicken. He sometime nips at my fingers if I tell him off for being amourous with my hand, but he doesn't do any damge.

Teaching children respect and empathy for animals and people is crucial imo, my daughter learned early, and she really respect all beings - so it actually made her emotionally smarter. I think you also chose the right bird and moment to not interrupt, but Charlie learned so I think you did the right thing.
