Between hands and Tripod there is the Monopod. You eliminate one axis. I got one with a small screw in “tripodbase” so it stands on its own if you know the existence of the center of gravity (macro sleigh helps on long lenses) and if it is not as windy (always secure your Camera by a strap!). I attached it in Scotland and did not remove it for days. 770g Camera + Lens + Monopod + small Ballhead with quickrelease - very versatile, quickly deployed, unintrusive. It is a piece of equipment overlooked by many photographers. It is not ideal for Landscapes nor can it replace a Tripod, but often it gets the job done nicely. As always you have to adapt your workflow a bit.

@ 3:59 "My nose is running like mad" LOL I have the same problem when it's cold; worse when it's cold and windy. I prefer using a tripod when shooting landscape because it slows me down. It also helps me compose and expose accurately from odd angles and heights. OTOH for bird photography, I handhold all the way.

I have had 32 images published in a magazine about my State and of those 28 were taken handheld. A modern camera today does not require a tripod and often can prevent you from getting the shot. Good video.

Agree, Henry, to use the tripod only when needed. You live and work in an area that can be quite windy so even on the tripod you can get movement comparable to hand held shots. You're right, don't think we need the tripod all the time.

I recently began printing some work I shot a year ago at local pecan orchards. Because I needed to go from wide angle to telephoto continually, and I was shooting entirely handheld, I used my 24-120 f4, the most used, most versatile lens I've had for nine years. BUT... I never realized to now just how SHARP this lens actually is. I do not think this prints would be superior if I'd shot them on 2.8 versions. This all became most clear to me with a distance shot of the winter trees in silhouette with mountains directly behind. Every tiny pecan and twig is razor sharp, AND this was handheld at 105mm, 1/60 second, VR on lens. I've even shot architectural work handheld with this lens and got similar results. So... tripods often not needed as you've been pointing out.

I hear you about tripods. 35mm cameras were designed to be handheld and capture more intimate, personal images. When newspaper photographers switched from Speed Graphics to 35mm SLRs, photojournalism became much more personal and emotional. Really liked the B&W image of the creek/river early in this video. It was perfect for that photo. Great capture!

Welcome to the world that we M34 shooters have been accustomed to for a few years now. The smaller sensor has a few downsides from FF but nothing you can not workaround. The lenses on the M34 are usually smaller, lighter and the Olympus Image Stabilisation with what they call sync image stabilization with some lenses is nothing short of black magic people reportedly shooting handheld slower than 2 secs. I to have had the revelation of the tripod finding I enjoy my shoots much more without having to drag that Triopd out but safe in the knowledge it's there if need be. I quite like the channel of James Popsys he to has been doing what you have started doing worth a checkout.

I know you've had your Mindshift bag a while now and it works perfectly fine. However, I love the Mindshift Rotation bags. They have a "fanny pack" that holds your many camera gear and rotates forward around your waist from the main pack. It's an awesome design that saves time and your bag from setting it down. Also, I think a lot of the time, photographers say they use tripods to "slow down" but I feel like you don't need one to do that, just make the decision to do so if that's what you want to do.

I can understand why using a tripod less is a good thing, but I don't see the point in going out without it, as there are always situations when it will be needed and modern tripods do not have to be heavy or difficult to carry around. Without it, opportunities will be missed, regardless of what camera system you have. I shoot with Pentax gear, which has 5 stops IBIS built in, but there is no substitute for a stable platform when taking long exposures, or even shots at say 1/50, 1/20 etc. If you are making prints, you need the stability a tripod provides, the shots will be sharper and will probably be better composed, as the tripod forces you to slow down and consider compositions. I think it would be a mistake to ditch the tripod, just my opinion of course!

Another great video Henry, thanks very much. As for the tripod / No tripod discussion - it makes great sense too use it when you need it, but shooting hand held can be tricky avoiding camera shake., so will suit some more than others. One thing that will really help is to relax. Strangely, the body shakes much less when it is relaxed .. and absolutely explains why you can shoot much more hand held than you expected. You can't be tense AND be living the dream! When shooting hand held I try to breathe out just before I take a shot. It works for me !
@ThePurpleHarpoon3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend using a tripod every time you take a landscape photograph. Using a tripod allows you to take time to have a good look at the framed scene, this will help you decide what to include in the frame. When hand-holding the camera, it is easy to overlook something in the shot that can spoil the photograph. Also, using a tripod let's you relax between shots, knowing exactly what is in the frame for the next shot. Never underestimate the use of a tripod.
@Seafox00113 жыл бұрын
It used to be the case that a tripod was needed because large format cameras were bulky and heavy and low noise film stock had a low exposure rate - so long exposure times were the default. With modern high resolution and high ISO camera sensors hand held is more practical for trying out a number angles and heights in quick succession. Both ways of photographing are useful and to a certain degree depend on circumstances. Light can be fleeting.
@scottweaverphotovideo3 жыл бұрын
Both ways of shooting produce excellent results, depending on the situation. There is also a powerful case to be made for quick spontaneous shots, relying on skills and creative inspiration. Thinking too much about a composition can be a bad thing.

@@scottweaverphotovideo A tripod can make possible a shot that is impossible without one. This is the point I was making. If you carry a tripod it doesn't mean you have to use it for every shot, so I don't understand why it slows anyone down? Modern tripods are not heavy or difficult to carry, so I don't understand why it would not be advantageous to carry one just in case?

I hear what you’re saying about the tripod Dude, really I do, but you print your images, and those images deserve to be pin sharp. They just won’t be if you’re using it held away from you like a cellphone, even at 1/250 the second. Like it or not, your heart beats, and your arms vibrate, especially held out at arms length like that. Stabilisation has certainly made a difference in recent years, enabling hand held photography down to 1/15 sec with the camera held with both hands and braced against your face, I recognise that! Try a bit of pixel peeping at 100% image size and beyond; if the tripod is truly stable, there will be a crispness that’s not there on an outstretched arms wobble shot. Also, the tripod does help enormously with composition...so less cropping too! All my humble opinion Bonnie Lad, I do like your shots.

As soon as you get the tripod out why stop at f11? Why not go the Jo Cornish route and go f22?
@floriank80433 жыл бұрын
The answer is diffraction. It is a critical part of the physics in photography. He is on an apsc sensor at 24MP so diffraction can/will hit you at around f11. Stopping down to f22 will decrease sharpness drastically. You can test it yourself with a fluffy blanket - at f8 crisp at f22 blurry.
