My life makes sense now!! Ever since I was about 14 years old I felt completely out of place in a t-shirt. Now that I know I'm a Romantic, it only makes sense. Could you possibly do a video about easy switches from a basic t-shirt for each body type? For example, how you like the dainty cami top instead of a crew neck tee. I would love to hear more about misconceptions like these! Wonderful job, Ellie

I personally would recommend a short sleeved light knitwear or a short sleeved chiffon blouse that looks like a t shirt. With a v neck or a boat neck. For me the cotton material and the neckband just didn't look good. These alternatives fit better in a classic wardrobe and can still give off that effortless casual vibe.

How I like to wear t shirts as a Soft Dramatic: -choose a tailored one, so it follows your body shape, and doesn’t look as boxy -tuck it in to get waist emphasis, at least in the front - choose one with a v-neck or otherwise wider neckline It works

It all makes sense now. For years I have suffered trying to incorporate a simple white T into my wardrobe. Being a Soft Natural I never thought there was something besides button-up shirts or flowy blouses for me. However I have recently discovered that 3/4 sleeve boat neck tops or crew neck T-shirts look best on me. So, no more v-necks, no more draped, no more raglan, bat sleeve or off the shoulder T-shirts for me. I just found what suits my body-type and am gonna stick to it.

I'm a self typed theatrical romantic and nothing makes me feel worse about myself than a 'jeans and a tee shirt' outfit. I'm glad fashion has become much more eclectic now. A few years ago that seemed like the go-to uniform for everyone. I always wondered what was wrong with me. Why other girls looked good like that and I never did. It did real, lasting damage to my self esteem and I started to believe i just simply wasn't attractive considering i only looked good 'done up.' Unfortunately that era landed while I was at university. I wish I'd found myself and my style back then. I think uni would have been a totally different experience. I felt uncomfortable about my outfit every single day. Now I live a life completely free of 'jeans and a tee shirt.' Little singlet type tops - especially with lace, are so much better for people on this end of the spectrum. Waist emphasis is important for TRs but I also think showing some shoulder, upper arms and clavicle makes a huge difference with us too.

I'm still not sure about my type but I'm definitely on the yang side and recently I found I really like wearing oversized t-shirts, especially men's t-shirts because they're heavier and more well made. Before I used to wear more feminine, curve-hugging kind of tops because I thought that's what I had to wear and I always felt uneasy and off. It's so obvious now, i don't have curves to hug! I'm blunt and boxy so boxy things suit me better

Yup. Me, too. I’m a flamboyant natural and I cannot wear women’s t shirts. They are so weirdly constructed …. I’m not sure whom they are actually designed for, tbh. They are often way too short, have weird scooped hemlines and the shoulders vs the necklines don’t line up properly. Gamines and classics maybe? Anyhow, I wear men’s t-shirts exclusively and I wear them most days. They accommodate my wide shoulders and chest, they hit my longer arms at the perfect spot on my upper arm instead of cutting them off awkwardly and they are long enough to hit me at the exact right place just below my natural waist (I have long legs and a short torso so I need longer tops). And yes, they are absolutely better made.

I mainly need to consider sharpness at my neck, narrowness at my shoulders, softness at my chest and hips, and contrast elsewhere.

What is interesting for me: I'm a flamboyant natural and usually love everything boxy like t-shirts. But I am pregnant now and gained around 10kg, especially around the bust, hips and back. Suddenly I have all this roundness in my body and my usual outfit combinations don't work anymore. Now I know why my usual t-shirt feels off and will embrace this time with flowy and soft shapes.
@moafjonsson7 ай бұрын
I mean this very respectfully, and it is literally just a thought that crossed my mind as a fellow FN when I read your comment - are you sure you are a FN? If you gain weight and suddenly the FN lines don't work for you, then I have a hard time believing you are actually a FN. I think this because 1) most people, including David K, say that your body type and recommendations do not change with weight fluctuations and 2) I have been 10-15 kgs heavier too but the shapes and lines that flattered me the most were still the same typical ones for FN. My style recommendations did NOT have to accomodate weight gain, and as far as I understand it they should not for anyone. You should do whatever you feel is best for you, but I would highly recommend re-checking your body type if I were you (: ♡
@Chrysaetos3 Жыл бұрын
The only t-shirts I ever loved and that actually looked flattering on me were those that were cut with a curve, a discovery I made quite by accident. Basically if you lay down the t-shirt flat, the cut of the fabric from the armpits to the hips will curve inwards towards the waist and out to the hips, a concave shape. Classic t-shirts are cut straight down from armpit to hip, hence the name "T" shirt. The sleeve also matters. Women's t-shirts are usually cut with such short sleeves that some are basically cap sleeves and give no upper arm coverage at all. They're almost tank tops without the shoulder exposure. This isn't flattering for everyone. Men's t-shirts are usually cut to cover at least halfway down the upper arm, which is something that would be nice to see more often in women's t-shirts. As someone who has a lot of roundness, the classic, straight boxy cut of t-shirt is never going to be my best look, no matter how stylish it looks on others. The type that's cut with a curve looks amazing though. Unfortunately, they're so rare. The best t-shirt I ever had was cut with a curve, had fitted sleeves that went midway down my upper arm and was actually long enough the cover my hips. It's a shame that so little thought seems to be put into the cut of women's t-shirts because the right ones can be so easy, comfortable and flattering. As it stands, the only place a t-shirt has in my life is for loungewear and for that, the men's ones are superior with their longer sleeves, thicker fabric and overall roomier cut.

This explains so much!! I think I’m a soft dramatic and boxy styles of t-shirt have never really done it for me. I own a couple thinner more loose ones which I enjoy wearing but they feel more akin to the blouses that I tend to gravitate toward. Button-downs or anything that kind of looks like an Edwardian shirtwaist (thin blousy fabric, lace/texturing details, a little bit of frill, big sleeves a great bonus) works a lot better for me as a t-shirt substitute (all tucked in ofc!). I also gravitate towards similar singlets to you, just in a bit of a looser style. I think they’re all great alternatives to a t-shirt that fit my style well

As a Soft Natural, here's some tips that might help my fellow SNs (based on what works for me): - raglan sleeves are my life saviors, they look really flattering on SN shoulders (also when it comes to hoodies) - cap sleeves are a no go, they just look too small - the wider the neckline the better, however v neck always looks off on me - avoid hiding your waist, go for a more fitted style or tuck in a looser shirt into high waisted pants - flowy fabrics will look less boxy

I think it depends on the type of t-shirt and the way you wear it. Of course, more varieties of t-shirts would probably favor some body types more than others, but that doesn't mean that some body types can't pull off any type of t-shirt, and even so, the way you style them can help make the outfit slightly more harmonious than it would be without styling it a certain way.

Attention , soft naturals: Home-made, off-the-shoulder t-shirts are the best. I take a shirt with a slim fit (not tight) in the torso (men’s small works best for me) and I cut out the collar in a boat neck shape.Then I cut off the sleeves at the hem. If it’s a big boxy t-shirt, I’ll knot the sides with hair-ties and tuck them under. This style honors the width in my shoulders while providing waist emphasis. The styles of t-shirt that don’t work for me are crew necks and scoop necks. It’s ok to cut up your t-shirts. That’s what Ellie tried to do. I can see her point that in the end it just didn’t feel right. I love t-shirts, but I have to modify them first.

I think soft classics have to be very careful when picking a t-shirt, especially if they have extra body weight. The shoulder seems need to be straight, not dropped and a rounded/v neckline with pure lightweight fabric like linen or bamboo. Cotton can be a bit too stiff, especially with lower quality fabrics. I do think that many soft classics may not like tshirts because it can enhance shoulder width and the fleshiness of their arms. Think Laura Linney. You can really see this when she wears an asymmetrical off shoulder blouse. I also think horizontal lines particularly, even in the right fabric can really throw off a soft classic as it tends to create a disproportionate top half in what is a really balanced body line.

I think there is a t-shirt for EVERY body type. Maybe it’s fitted, maybe a v-neck or a boat neck, maybe cup sleeves or 3/4 sleeves. Your right, a boxy men’s t-shirt isn’t right for softer types. But to avoid t-shirts completely, if you like this item, is not necessary I think 🤔

Self-typed Soft Dramatic here - I struggled for years as to why I couldn't make a T-shirt work then I discovered bardot bodies, anything off shoulder, anything with a boat neck seemed to honour my broad shoulders and the truer T shape far more. Before I figured that out I got some soft material boatneck thing thinking it was going to look really chic on me and boy was I wrong, the drape looks terrible and the neckline flops all over the place, I am the wrong kibbe type to pull that off!

Wow. I knew before this video about Kibbe body type, but never understood it until today. Great video.

Hard disagree. I think anyone can find a flattering t-shirt for their body shape. You'll just have to consider the neckline, shape and length of the sleeve and the hem, the material, the color, the style. This is like saying that trousers don't suit a particular body type. The same boxy crewneck won't work on everyone, but there will certainly be flattering choices for anyone!

Absolutely! I'm a SD and i look great in any tight-fitting t-shirt regardless of the neckline.

Completely agree! A lot of things determine what stlye of tshirt looks good on you. To have a self-declared stylist say that you should not wear something period is really passe.

@@shaadfncjl92 I don’t think she ever said that in the video though. The title is definitely for search engine optimization, not because she thinks that no one in the world should wear tee shirts 😊

As a soft natural a fitted tee is a no go but I find that t shirts with a somewhat more "oversized" fit work really well on my body when I tuck them in for some waist definiton. Creates a lot of volume that complements the width of this body type.

Yes!!! I've been struggling with this for months now, I feel like I don't need a single t-shirt in my wardrobe, I definitely prefer blouses that I'm calling "better than basic". But I suspect I'm a Soft Classic just like you :)

I have only read the title and not watched the video yet but I think a lot of people seem to have forgotten why many people like to wear T-shirts in the first place; COMFORT!
@isabelled4871 Жыл бұрын
Well depending on your body shape t shirts Can be very uncomfortable believe me! If you're a SN with big shoulders it feels tight around the shoulders, then if you have breasts too it crushes the breasts. I feel like encrusted in a cage in the standard t shirt, not comfortable at all. Also ugly and bulky. My (nice) curves disappear under it, too. T shirts are a garment created for men and is comfortable for men's bodies. Honestly can't understand why it's such a Staple.
@nomadeXXII Жыл бұрын
@@isabelled4871 i get where you’re coming from. My bust is also a bit on the larger end so that’s why oversized is the way to go for me personally. Super comfy. But that of course hides your curves, which I prefer. But some ladies obviously don’t want that
@isabelled4871 Жыл бұрын
Obviously not 😉 Why hide your curves in an oversized sack? More often than not it makes people look bigger than they are. Better to wear something that defines your waist a bit. Also a good bra that makes breasts a little smaller because of how it's shaped (such bras have a name) I'm not saying wear a top like Ellie's wearing (quite understand you find it a bit too flimsy) but there are solutions out there other than an oversized shapeless t shirt, honestly ☺️

I found a nice-casual shirt that is sort of a hybrid between a t-shirt and a blouse. It has a nice neckline and is sleek, but it feels so comfortable and is shaped nicely. Idk what this means but I'm glad I am experimenting with clothes because it's one of my favorite shirts ever and made me realize that regular t-shirts don't make me feel comfortable with myself. I just wear them out of convenience and therefore tolerate the way they look on me. Anyway, the new shirt is casual enough to be comfortable in but cute and stylish enough to wear out.

Agreed. But the crew neck T shirts that she shows Jackie Onassis wearing in the video are best for me-I’m short waisted, so most V necks don’t look as good.

As a TR I find the classic boxy crew neck t shirt makes me feel like an awkward teenager again, so I only ever wear them to sleep in 😆 My basic everyday tops are stretchy, fitted tops with open necklines, and they pair especially well with high waisted trousers

Fellow SN here! One of my favorite basics is a v-neck tee in a soft fabric that is relaxed enough for me to either knot at the waist or tuck into jeans.

That’s so useful. I have always felt more comfortable in singlets in the summer time. I have a bunch of t shirt, really nice ones but I hardly wear them. I guess you don’t always think twice about things, why you make the choices you do when you get dressed. I think I’m a soft natural, but Im not positive as my hips are a bit wider than my shoulders. Not by much but.

I have typed myself as a soft dramatic and have never liked regular tshirts on my body. I can get by with a knit top that has a scoop neckline, some bust shaping and a fabric that drapes. These are sometimes sold as tshirts,however they have never been my first choice. Thanks for confirming why.

I was about to say that T shirts look really good on me, but then I'm one of the types you mentioned that it looks good on. My shoulders are bony and sharp, and I have a small bust so shirts that "hang" off me are great. Ive gotten rid of most of my form fitting shirts because they look funny on me. I agree you look frumpy in T shirts- like you are ready for a PJ party!
