I'm new to B/X (using OSE). Never played it before, but I am really enjoying it. I've played 2e, 3e, 5e D&D, but B/X is so tight and focused. It feels like it really knows what it wants to be as a game in a really focused way, which I'm loving right now. I've played D&D for 25 years or more, and I've never been able to make dungeons as fun as they are when playing B/X.

I started with the years ago, and while I liked it I was essentially "blind" as I had never played a TTRPG before. But slowly over the years things about 5e just started to grate on me, and what I wanted out of the system couldn't be found in it. Ironically I know most people who dislike 4e say they dislike it because it's like a videogame--for me it's a similar complaint about 5e and the entire community. The breaking point for me was a few years back when I tried running Curse of Strahd for 5e. I was so excited because it seems like a cool adventure, but 5e is fundamentally incompatible with the tone of CoS, and horror overall. Thankfully I ended up finding channels like Bandit's Keep, Dungeoncraft, and QuestingBeast. Got introduced to OSE, and it's been my favorite ever since. OSE provides me with what I wanted. I've also been on a long quest to try many other RPGs like Delta Green, King Arthur Pendragon, Blades in the Dark, and many others (but good luck trying to find a group that isn't playing 5e or actually want to try something different). I think the only system that supplants how much I enjoy OSE/BX is Dungeon Crawl Classics simply for the fighter's mighty deeds, and the magic system. But those can be easily imported into B/X.

Love B/X D&D's flexability and resiliance, you can house rule the heck out B/X D&D and never break those rules! Started my playing career with B/X D&D and hated it when everyone else moved on to 1st edition AD&D. Had to play that, of course, or give up playing altogether. Longed for years to return to the simplicity and elegance of B/X and finally got my chance when both my sisters' kids got to be old enough to play. Great to be an Uncle! Ran a Saturday morning campaign for several years untl they all got old enough to wander off to other things; college, boy/girlfriends, etc. But I even got my younger brother to join that campaign in its hayday. Miss it still, just can't find any players willing to give B/X D&D a try these days. Seems like a lot of people think of it as being for kids.

AD&D 1e has claimed my top spot for favourites, but OSE is a really close second. I started with BECMI back in the 80s, and wished I'd played it more before moving on to other games... my recent return to Basic via OSE has been a breath of fresh air.

B/X (and OSE) has become my favorite system since I discovered it, this is for two main reasons. First is as you mentioned the modularity and simplicity, it's D&D without the bloat. Second is the adventures, I argue they are the best adventures ever written, just look at the B series. BX is what I always imagined D&D to be, it has the feel and the vibe I thought D&D was supposed to have, it just feels right you know? I think Moldvay was a genius at both game and adventure design. My tip three modules are all ones he was involved in, below I will list them in order. 1. B4: The Lost City 2. X2: Castle Amber 3. B3: Palace of the Silver Princess (Green) - this one is underrated.

Yes, bother! Born in’74, started gaming in ‘86 (age 12). BECMI and AD&D1E era, so I was obsessed with both. Got an ‘old’ set of B/X from friends..felt lacking. Got the RC, imagining it was the greatest thing ever ever, ever! Early to late 20’s, began to see issues…. No issues with the old game I “didn’t want (B/X)”… Fell in love with OD&D too due to the osr but…..B/X just ….kept on being! It’s kept on being so super hard-core no matter what! Despite my younger age, it has shown me how solid and robust it is that no matter what I throw at it, it can handle it! I dig other rules-lite games like RISUS and the originals or clones of the UK Fighting Fantasy rpg by way of Troika! Or better, Spellzard! (Which I’d highly recommend, and I think you’d really dig) and I’ve gone a long way with Tunnels & Trollls…..to say nothing of my time with warhammer, palladium, etc…. But, if I go ‘full-force’ D&D….its gonna be B/X!!! Because it IS ‘Full Force real D&D’ new and old (I feel)! Fun vid! Truth! Thanks for it! 🙂

I was introduced to D&D with 3.5, left when 4e came about. I recently came back to 5e when Spelljammer was released and my players begged me to run it, which made me research all that Spelljammer had to offer in AD&D. That search then led me to start looking at previous editions, and I've really been wanting to try either B/X or BECMI for my next campaign.

BHP(Brave Halfling Publishing) had a short-lived series of LL/B/X expansions under the “Delving Deeper” title (obviously not the OD&D clone Delving Deeper, which came later). Anyway, I just wanted to recommend their LL/B/X expansions of Bard and Paladin and Ranger. All three are great. Very, very, very B/X-y. I’ve used a few since ‘08 or so with zero issues! Again… highly recommended! Cheers (again)!

Agreed. There's an oversaturation of BX clones. It made sense 20 years ago when you couldn't get ANY TSR era DND products, but it makes no sense now unless you're OCD and correcting typos in your already existing product. I started with Basic Fantasy, which is a fine clone and cheap. I have the Rules Cyclopedia now, so that's where my stuff comes from. Some of us in the circle haven't been alive long enough to have the original books, so it helps us more than the true Old Schoolers that never got rid of their books.

Only D&D I ever played was 2nd Edition AD&D. Seemed like I was the only one of my friends capable of DM'ing and all we had was the PHB. I just made the rest up from questions that I asked another dude who I knew that played but he didn't live around here. After 15 years of not roleplaying, DCC drug me back into it. I'm discovering all these new things like hexes & sandboxes. Back when D&D was important to me, I knew of two or 3 people who actually wanted to play. Now there's an online community of thousands. It's truly epic

Best "baseline" version of the game to build off of, lovin it. Also, the simple rule set gives me RAM space in my brain to run the grindy details I like that makes a game feel real.... like tracking torches, rations, encumbrance, etc.

I love the B/X setting myself (I add just a little bit from the Companion set, like the domain rules and the mass-combat system, along with the beholder). My first exposure to D&D was the red Basic box that I bought from the local K-Mart when I was just 13. Then a couple years later, I bought the 1st edition AD&D books from Sears. The best edition of D&D is “AD&D 2nd” It perfected a lot of confusion playing straight out of the PHD 2nd. It made most of the “newish” stuff, such as non-weapon pros, OPTIONAL. If you cut 2nd down to it’s core, it’s pretty simple. Tail end of AD&D into 2nd and all during 2nd introduced all the great campaigns that would be staples of D&D. They made them most product that was in my opinion all optional, they made 100’s of novels. Character kits, complete guides, something for everyone. 😊 Having said that, when you make so many products you’re bound to have a lot of poor products, and 2nd hand many poor products. BUT, the books like the priests and Wizard spell compendiums and the encyclopedia magicas, you had great compendiums and encyclopedias of all the previous editions, magazines (dragon Dungeon) everything rolled this edition. You can use everything in the past with house rules and if DMs focus on the core of 2nd, you can expand very simply into optional book such as the complete class guides. The most novels, books, campaign setting and some of the greatest books ever made. Not to start an edition war but the easiest way to compare the options of 2nd to let’s say 5e, would be spelljammer. 5 pages describing the Rock of bral, or over a 100 page in the 2nd edition Rock of bral supplement. The point is more is basically more when it comes to 2nd edition. Modern plays need only be introduced to 2nd from a simple standpoint. I must say with so many great and horrible books made in 2nd, it can be very intimidating. But with the right help can introduce you to the vast lore and story of the D&D worlds, using the basic core system. Shout out to Mystra and the gazetteers in D&D, some of the best stuff made before 2nd edition. Keep up the good work with the channel, and sorry for any grammar errors, it’s late…

I've been looking to start a game, but I wanted to do a D&D game where the characters were more like investigators...not a lot of combat, not a lot of magic, a lot of roleplay, a lot of clues and following leads. I'm using my original "red box"..because I wanted to take a lot of the flashy new stuff out, because it was basically a distraction from the way I wanted the game to go. my players are on board with this. of course, most of the players are guys from the same gaming group we've had since the early 1980's, with the addition of some of their now-adult children, so we all grew up on the early D&D rules. the way I'm thinking, the "thieves guild" (I'll probably come up with a different name for it) is more like the japanese yakuza...open, part of society, more like security experts and insurance agents, with some gambling on the side. "we know how to secure your stuff, because we know how to steal your stuff. pay us a nominal fee, and we will ensure your stuff doesn't get stolen." the fee is low enough most pay, and with everyone paying in, the thieves guild just needs to keep up on their skills and not do any of the dangerous actual thieving. and everyone is happy with the arrangement. if it does get stolen, we will get it back as part of your contract. this is where the players come in. they work for the thieves guild..they don't need to be thieves, they're investigators. they don't need to do much combat, they investigate, show proof, and the guild takes over and does the heavy lifting. yes, as DM the prep time will be insane. all the details will have to be ironed out to the smallest clue. I'm up for it.

My vote is basically for what you said... sort of because that is already what my group is playing. heh We play an amalgam of B/X and AD&D 1e... with even a couple 5e tidbits that we like. As you said, it is crazy modular... and because it isn't rules-heavy, we aren't bogged down while playing. Our games are pretty smooth and quick. We also have a good DM, so that helps facilitate that, but the system we use... which basically has B/X at its heart, is the engine it all runs on. :-) It's the system I first played back in 1981... and it is still chugging for us.

Someone get this man over 1k subs STAT! Also, loved the guest appearance by Misty and Beans in this one, lol. I agree with everything you said about B/X; it truly is an elegant system, and one some finely-woven that you can toss nearly all the modularity you can imagine at it without fearing to break out. B/X definitely served as a lot of inspiration for me when crafting my own game. Speaking of: Do you think you'd ever do a video/series of videos on the process for publishing your own TTRPG work? I have a few games kicking around that I've designed over the years that I'd love to someday take to the next step and share to the masses, so I'd love to be able to get them spruced up and available in print. I first played D&D as a 9 year-old back in 1997, 2nd edition AD&D. From there, it was a wild ride of getting together with friends of the family to play 1st edition, B/X, etc, and the rest is history. B/X is certainly a great game system, though I haven't played it myself in a good long while. I think the last time I played anything B/X-related was back in 2002, as 2nd Edition AD&D was my baby until 3.5 came out in 2003 or 2004. After that, well, I got on board the train with everyone else into 4th edition, then pathfinder, then 5th edition. My friends and I still play Pathfinder to this day, but I occasionally run 5th edition and lend mentoring to new DMs of 5th edition. Would love to give B/X another go, though, just don't have the books xD Might have to look into that, though.

I've seen folks say the same of Swords & Wizardry. Somewhere I heard that Gygax's own home games were 0e with whatever modules he was adding at the time. So the theory of it is great. In practice, I feel like it's a lot of work to cobble out exactly what I want in a game. I miss the days when xp mattered, and everyone advanced at different rates. But at the same time, I think jumping back in to whichever system would be really jarring at this point. Maybe I'll run a 4-session B/X or OSE game once we've finished our current campaign. If I were to play it long term, I feel like it would be really helpful to have some guidance on how to tweak the various bits we might add.

Is BECMI as modular as B/X? I started in 1e, so I'm not familiar with either system, really.

I started with AD&D2E. It'll always be my first love. Began looking into older editions when 3.5 came out so soon after 3.0. I figured if they were just going to keep bringing out new editions they could go spit. I didn't get on the Pathfinder train because I didn't love 3E. I browsed 4E and put it back on the shelf. I had already been an OSR guy for nearly a decade when 5E came out.. I bought into 5E way way too much and eventually sold it all back. Over most of that time I was looking into old editions and clones. Clones all over the internet, some way way less than legal. Some predating OGL. Some not bothering to use it. The popular ones everybody knows. The less popular ones barely anyone has ever heard of. I'm trying to paint a picture, that picture is that I've been everywhere, man. I have a favorite D&D-like game and a favorite D&D game. The difference is one is mechanically similar to D&D but doesn't play like D&D. The other does both. My favorite D&D-like is Worlds Without Number. My favorite D&D is OSRIC, which is a cleaned up and very mildly changed AD&D1E. I actually hate Gygax's writing in AD&D1E. To me, OSRIC is more D&D than D&D. Chiefly put, it's mostly just AD&D1 without Bards, Monks, and Psionics (all things I say 'good riddance' to). It's also missing the weapon v armor AC adjustment tables. And that's pretty much it. Now I do have some house rules like everybody does, but not enough to bring any other D&D's into contention, as they all would require even more rules. Of the Complete books, I actually liked Priest the most as most of the specific Mythoi builds you could come up with were not as mechanically optimal as a simple Cleric from the PHB. Fighters (and only Fighters) did need their Complete book, as did Thieves (and only thieves). The Priest book is just fun. The entire rest of the Complete line are trash. Tome of Magic is fun though, I prefer it to the Wizard book.

B/E, just a term to me. I like all of D&D from Chainmail until 1st edition. I KNOW there are slight differences between one popular term version and another. I prefer to just call it all 'old school'. Anything before 2nd edition is old school for me. Just grabbed up something called Dungeon Delving Brown Box Edition. Not sure of the time line. I just noticed there are no demi humans. Interesting. Only Human PCs. That must be very early. I think. I don't really know. Not important to me as well. I will just use it in a humancentric game where the elves and dwarves and halflings are NPCs only. I rarely encounter players that even want to role play the difference in races at any rate. The point though, is as the DM, I can add or remove anything I wish really. So making the distinction of what is and isn't B/X is not worth it.

What were those books at about 1:35-2:00 mark? (one black cover & the other with green cover) You referred them as BXR but I can't seem to find them.

The black one is a custom print B/X Combined. You can find it for DL at the B/X Facebook Group, and Lulu for the print. The green one is my custom B/X/R (Basic/Expert/Revised) where I made my own rules for my game. :)

I started things with 3.5, right near the end of it's run. About maybe half a year at most before 4e came out. Didn't much care for 4e and most of the people I might play with didn't either. After the few 3.5 stuff I was doing kinda petered out I switched over to Pathfinder 1e and have preferred it quite a bit since. Between it being my first tabletop rpg system, some ease of understanding and the skill system most of the ones to come after never really grabbed me. While I never played what came before, THAC0 seemed like a fair bit of trouble to wrap my head around with no one to actually play with. But overall some of these earlier editions look like they have some interesting stuff, even if they handle things differently. And either way playing so much D&D or near D&D type games has inspired my some in trying to make my own games...though none of them have gone that far sadly.

@@bearthegenxgm That does sound pretty nice. And trying to figure out how I want to have magic alongside modern guns is a bit of a pain since I can only think of Shadowrun for something to maybe get ideas, but don't want to use dice pools if it can be helped.

It's a shadow of my former collection sadly. Over the years, to pay bills, etc... I've parted with parts of it and now, the secondary market is brutal and unkind, so certain classics I loved will unfortunately never grace theses shelves again. Still I add new stuff as well. So not all tears and regret :)

Since you included clones, for me it's Pathfinder 1E, 3E got rid of THAC0 removed the class limitations on races AND introduced Spontaneous/Non-Vancian casting, 3.5 Ironed out some flaws and PF1E improved even further beyond, introducing my favorite classes like Shaman and Magus. Thanks to Owlcat they have Archetypes like Shadow Shaman and Eldritch Scion (While technically ES was from Paizo the original version was a weird gimped Bloodrager, Owlcat ES, is a sorcerer-fied Magus and WoTR gives it the ability to cast metamagic 3 times per day)
