Fantastic video! I need to get back on my bike because I am no longer able to drive. Unfortunately I've lost the ability to stay balanced long enough to get going. Any advise about how to 'relearn' this skill?
@HeatherNicholds7 жыл бұрын
aw, glad you found it helpful!! hmmm interesting question... my first thought would be to google "learn to ride a bike as an adult"... things like this are more difficult to learn when we're adults, our c of g is different, we're higher off the ground, we have more awareness of what it means to fall... Anyway, with the big disclaimer that I've never taught anyone to ride a bike, and I have no memory of learning how myself, I'm wondering if it might help to start with a curb? I often find myself stuck at a light, and rather than put my foot down to the ground, I try to find a bit of curb to put my one foot down on. Then when the light turns, it takes a while for the cars to get going and I often just push myself along the curb with that one foot until there's enough speed to start riding again. So I'm wondering if you could stand on your bike, with one foot on a curb, get in a riding position but rather than trying to pedal right away, just push with one foot to get the feel of where your balance is? Again, I have no idea what a proper way to build the progressions would be, so this may be totally not what you should do... But I can't think of any other way to figure out the balance while going slowly... ok, I then had to look it up, and I wasn't too far off! Just a few things to be sure of before this one: www.bicycling.com/beginners/tips/how-to-learn-to-ride-a-bike-as-an-adult Have fun!!

I began commuting by bike in 1994. I ride rain or shine, hot or cold 10 miles a day in the panhandle of Florida. I can say without a doubt it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have not only saved money and enjoyed the health benefits, but I also get to enjoy the seasons change, hear the sounds of nature, and appreciate a variety of weather. It has taught me patience and perseverance. And it has given me freedom from buying gasoline. Excellent video Heather. Hopefully it will inspire others.

Derrick - living in the panhandle of FL where summer temps are high can be a challenge. I wear shorts and a sleeveless tee shirt riding to work. Fortunately I leave about 45 minutes after sunrise, so it is not too bad in the morning. I pack all my clothes in a dry bag and then take a quick sponge bath and change once I get to work. Riding home ... I sweat a lot and jump in the lake after I kiss my wife. LOL

I've been bike commuting for about three months now. I'm about 5 miles from work and was looking for a way to get more exercise. I also don't like wearing a back pack. I started riding to work last year during summer. I would commute to school to work at the school library and it was 12 miles one way. I eventually go an ebike after a month because I was sweating too much. After graduation, I moved states and got a new job. Istill commute by ebike, but my commute is 2 miles. If I can survive this coming winter, then there is no need for me to get a car. Now I’m already thinking about moving again for a new job in a city, so I can take public transportation.😁

Thumbs up for the great and very uplifting video. I live in Russia near Moscow and have been cycle-commuting for three years now. I just love it! The reasons are similar to yours: it keeps me fit (I've up grade my ride from a very good fitness bike Trek 7.4 to a road bike and take regular weekend rides). I also became environment-conscious. Plus it actually takes me less time than driving by car in my traffic-clogged city. The only downside is snowy and cold winter that prevent me from bike-commuting.
@tconnolly98202 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have just watched this four years after it was posted and it really is even more relevant now. A great video and I am going to look further into your channel after I post this comment. The most important thing about cycling is just to get out and start doing a little. Short trips. Get used to being out and about on two wheels again. Leave the car - if you have one - at home as often as possible. I got my first bike since my late teens five years ago. Practically a 30 year gap in between. But I only really started using it regularly when covid turned my regular routine upside down. I started using it every time it was practical instead of the car. In and out to town with panniers (cheap, €10 each for 20 litre fold ups) for in between shopping trips and any other reason to leave the car at home. Last year I got a large fully covered dog trailer and use it now for full weekly shopping trips and for anything else too much for the bike and panniers alone. I've had up to 70kg behind me on the way home. It's 6.5km each way to the supermarket. My bike is a €400 hybrid so it's very much a general purpose bike. Not built for competitive speed like a dedicated road bike but my point is, unless you want to be "competitive", (against yourself or generally) you can get just as fit on a €400 all purpose bike as a really expensive €4,000 bike. Just maybe not traveling as fast while you're doing it! I don't bother with lycra. But I do choose normal clothing that is more appropriate for cycling especially in summer. I prefer to embrace the "Dutch style" of utilitarian cycling and commuting. Dress for the destination, not the journey. I don't want to be walking around town dressed as a hi-vis road warrior as I'm doing my shopping chores, banking, going to the post office, café, cinema, pub, whatever. Although I do always wear a hi-vis vest in summer or rain proof fleece jacket in winter for safety plus lots of lighting on the bike. The best way to arrive without sweating too much is simply to go slower. Take it easy. The faster you go, the more you will sweat. And you will tend to sweat more for the five minutes after you stop. When you are cycling, the wind tends to cause sweat to evaporate. When you are almost at your destination, if you can find some convenient flat streets or a carpark/? where you can cycle around at a relaxed pace with no effort, this with the air resistance is much more effective at stopping and helping to dry up sweating than just getting off the bike and resting for the same five minutes. Perhaps this may help some people? And since I have been cycling more, I keep meeting more people I either know or in many cases, I have never met before to stop and have a chat with. This is another added benefit of cycling and always trumps performance and getting there faster in my book. Be sensible, be seen and be safe on those roads folks.

Lovely video! Really appreciate how natural and disarming you are! I've been bicycle commuting for the past 15 years, in all seasons. Lived for nearly 7 years in Germany in between, loved how cycling friendly it was there. Now back in India for the past 5 years, cycling 20 to 30 km each day. The conditions are horrible - heavy and erratic traffic, horrendous roads, pollution, noise, stink etc.. but still I do it - wearing a pollution mask, and earphones with music to cut out the noise, carrying my laptop, clothes, food etc in a waterproof pannier, I take half the time it takes by car. All the points you noted, w.r.t. saving money, getting exercise, avoiding fossil fuels, and also the tips regarding bags, lights, how to take the space you need etc are all absolutely apt and what I can relate to in years of bicycle commuting. Thank you very much for making this video, it was a pleasure and heartening to watch, from another 'hardcore' commuter! 😍

for myself, i commute 80-100 miles a week via bicycle and yes i ride in the winter too. i have panniers, fenders, and 3 front lights and 3 rear lights and of course bicycle reflectors and reflective tires. my best advice for safety is a powerful helmet light. The tactic I use is when i see a car that's NOT paying attention ... just move your head up and down as you point into their windshield -- it's gets their attention -- GET OFF THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING. Lights...2 x Light n motion 2000 lumen each light and fly 12 (400 lumen) front lights and a 140db horn and 2 x 30 lumen rear lights and the fly6 rear light light. sadly, light night, was the only time in 3 years this tactic did not work and he almost killed me. i to use my horn and hold the button down and directly put 2000 lumen wiggling back and forth in his windshield and he still almost hit me -- missing me by 6 inches. he was driving the wrong way in my lane on the phone of course. the guy must have been drunk. 99% of the time wiggling the light back and forth on their windshield gets their attention that something is there then i scream at them to get off their phone while driving. if you saw my bike you would understand ... no excuses for NOT seeing me. here forward, i'm going to be creating a website and posting these bad drivers on website with their vehicle license plate, vehicle type, where they work, and the video of their poor driving. drivers have got to learn there are consequences for mis-treatment of cyclists.

Hi Heather. Great video for people wanting to get into bike or ebike commuting. Couple points of discussion: 1) Your road shoes and cleats are great to see, and I have them as well. But for commuting, I think it might be better to go with bike touring shoes or Shimano SPD pedals and cleats. Touring shoes are still stiff enough to proper transfer of leg energy into the pedals, while SPD are even better. Many makers of bike touring shoes on the market. For those in hot climates, Shimano makes sandals that can work on SPD pedals. Check your better cycling stores and explain what you are looking for. 2) A backpack or "messenger-style" bag are good to start with, but if one can, one should switch over to a rear bike rack and panniers. Lots of racks and panniers on the market. 3) Lights and more lights. I look like a X-mas tree coming down the road, and I even had a couple police officers comment that saw me way in the distance, but one is seen. 4) If you can afford it, get a GoPro or similar bike camera. Try a local motorcycle store to see what they have. Trust me, there is always some zero who will successfully argue "I didn't see you" when in fact he/she made the mistake. Videos never lie to police or to a judge......

Love your enthusiasm for bicycle commuting! Is your bike a hybrid? I think it's most important for your bike to be comfortable so you'll want to ride it. There are many minor adjustments you can make yourself that make a big difference like the height and tilt of your seat, the tilt of your handlebars, position your brakes so you can comfortably and safely use them, etc. Get a comfortable saddle/seat.

As many others have said; great vid! I've worked the same job for 12 years but only cycle commuted for about a year. I didn't for the very reasons you mentioned - I didn't think I could do it, didn't want the hassle of time and showers.... then I started running to keep fit after work, I didn't enjoy it. I thought for the same time I could be commuting on my bike that is just sat in the garage. I cycle a round trip of 15 miles ish. I save all that petrol, £1.30 a day toll bridge and I'm fit! My tips would be; practice your commute on an off day first, see how long it takes. maybe do some shorter rides and build up to your commute. If you've not used your bike in a while and you don't know how, get it serviced at a bike shop. Prep the night before by packing your bag and getting clothes ready. Have some breakfast in the morning and a banana or snack before going home. Have fun, mix up your commute by riding different routes, perhaps use your phone and an app to track your performance and progression. Watch lots of videos about other people commuting!!! :D

Great video and advice. I built an electric bike and have commuted solely on that for 3 years so far and plan to continue indefinitely. The only thing I don't necessarily agree with, and pardon me if I'm wrong - I may even have the same front light as you do, but I think a light with >400 lumens is far too bright for street riding. It blinds traffic, other cyclists checking their mirrors only see a wall of light. The higher lumen lights are supposed to be for trail riding. I rarely have my light on full brightness. And I use the steady/blink mode for heavy traffic and day riding and use the 2nd highest setting for early morning and late night commutes and highest setting for trails. My light is the same brand as yours and 400 lumens. Anyone interested in my bike setup, I have full walk through videos up.

Many people don't even consider commuting by bike because they work too far from home. If that's you, think again. I've been multi-modal car + bike commuting for years. Just put your bike on a car rack or in your car, pick a place within biking distance from where you work, drive there, park your car, and ride the rest of the way! I drive a sedan. By taking off the front wheel of my bike and flipping it upside down, I'm able to fit my bike behind the front seats of my car. Nothing beats riding a bike to work. Puts a smile on my face every time. Some tips: 1) read up about cycling safely on roads before you start - plenty of resources 2) choose your route carefully, zig-zagging if necessary to avoid roads with fast automobile traffic 3) much of safety is about visibility. Wear hi-viz clothing. Buy a neon safety vest. Don't worry about looking dorky. TRY to look dorky! 4) if you have no shower at work, make friends with building maintenance. I have access to janitors closet. Enough room to change clothes comfortably, and I can even "shower" by hooking up a short hose to the sink while standing in a plastic tub I bought.

You did a great job on this video I hope yo see you make regular commuter videos please.... Do you run studded tires in the winter, and think about trying a video when you do any maintenance on your cycle...

I ride to work....because I HATE jogging/running...and it allows me to fit in my fitness regimen weekly without having to go to a gym. Totally get the "cool" factor thing- I only ride 4 miles each way to work, yet my coworkers think I am nuts for riding year round through rain, hail, sleet, heat, and snow. I've heard all the excuses from them as to why they "couldn't" ride to work...many of them live closer than I do! We even have a shower available at work, a full kitchen (I wait to eat breakfast until after I arrive). I just love the freedom. I own a nice car, and I save a ton of wear and tear on the vehicle, and of course fuel savings. I also get the added benefit of enjoying all the wildlife I see on my route to work- which takes me along an old reclaimed railway bed. How many people can say they were nearly ran over by a deer in the early morning darkness??? Yup....that happened to me, haha.

NICE! haha I'm with ya on eating breakfast after riding, otherwise I feel a bit sick :/ Good for you!!! awesome deer story - WAY better than almost hitting a deer with your car, right??!?!?!?

cool, good for you!! and thanks for watching :) do you have any questions that I could answer in a follow up video? unfortunately I had a non-cycling-related accident a few weeks ago, and broke my wrist, so I will be off my bike for a while yet... when I'm back in action, I have definitely been planning to film my actual commute - but if any questions I'd be happy to answer! thanks again :)

A video or pictures from your commute would be interesting. I recently created a video of my 20 mile commute which demonstrated why I commute several days a week to my office. Live North of Boston on the coast which is such a great easy enjoyable 40 mile round trip commute.

I just sold my van its to costly for me now to drive, now that I am retired & I don`t make the big money no more so now I am saving up for a road bike, like you said it is much cheaper to operate a bike. I do a lot of metal detecting so I have a lot saved up from that hobby, & I don`t need to use up my retirement money for biking. I still have to figure out how to carry the detector on a road bike & all the extra bike stuff,, it would be a lot of bike repair stuff and metal detecting stuff to carry with me on my body while metal detecting in the parks, & beaches in the summer time. I am thinking of buying a large detector back pack to put most of everything in it.That a lot of stuff to carry on my back while detecting in parks, & beaches as well as riding the bike. Love your video.

Nice! Try looking into panniers - the side bags off the back. You can find some that would be on par with a backpack, but then you don't have the weight of your gear + any found metal on your back... I thought I was fine for a long time, but eventually a neuromuscular therapist I had to go see for a neck issue told me that it was quite likely due to carrying a backpack on my bike - and my neck has been WAY better since making that change. It's worth it in avoiding health costs!

Hello, Heather. One suggestion that I have for you is to change to the Shimano mountain bike SPD pedals over the Look type. Yes, there would be an up front cost (probably around $150-200 USD for shoes, cleats and pedals), but there are also big benefits. The shoes look like regular tennis shoes. The small cleats are indented into the shoes so you walk normally. There's no click and clack when walking clumsily in the store, at work etc. The cleats are easily replaceable for around $10. Anyway, just thought I'd tell you. I wish I had known about them long before Look and Speedplay.

If you cycle, especially as your main form of transport like this then you should DEFINITELY use some sort of puncture resistant tire. Schwalbe marathon plus are GREAT. I get zero punctures, you can cycle over glass or even wall tacks lol. It doesnt even use some sort of goo int he inner tube like other solutions. Great purchase and not much more than a regular tire.

Nice to know that there was another person in the same boat I am in; I currently have a car, but breaks down every now and then, and it takes time and money to get it fixed at times; and cheap at other times On the other hand, I have had several bicycles in my life, most recently I bought a Men's Genesis RCT, really good bike so far; and I have just renewed my car insurance, paid in full, to give me more time to think about either saving up to fix my car or just sell it to the car graveyard; either way I'm a bicycle enthusiast; I prefer bicycle over car; and I'm the 2nd gen in my family to own it, passed down to me by my dad (which I will always be great full), vehicles keep us out if the weather elements and are faster and you can storm chase in it (I've done it) But man, it's another world and level to be a cyclist; and so much cheaper of transportation and maintenance All in all, everything has it's pros and cons; I've walked and cycled in all weather conditions; not keen on driving on icy roads; and their are multiple bicycle cargo trailers (I found 7 by the time of this comment) for moving and hauling things (light loads such as groceries to heavy loads like furniture and carpentry/plumbing/electrical what have you); there are so many possibilities of bicycles that I will list it on my channel for those interested in checking it out:) Love this video, keep it 💯

I love riding my bike, i have 3000km so far this year. Having said that, i dont know if bicycle commuting is for me, only because i hate to leave my house clean, feeling all fresh from my shower, to arrive on the destination work/university covered in sweat. Normally if i have to walk anything more than like 5/10min i will start sweating, i dont sweat crazy amounts like i see some people, but i sweat fairly easily. To avoid that, i will have to walk very slowly, so with a bike i imagine it will be the same. The only way around that, would be if i had an electric motor to reduce the effort on climbs.. But i would like to try it sometime. Edit* Only now i saw that you too use an electric motor to assist you on climbs.
@HeatherNicholds7 жыл бұрын
yeah, sweating can be a problem... for myself - I've just decided to be ok with not always being fresh at work - I usually wind up sweating there anyway, so it's a losing battle. I know not everyone can or would be ok with that, in which case if you can find a gym or somewhere to shower close to work/school that's the ideal :) I luckily have a shower at work now, so I use that in the summer when there is absolutely no way I could cycle without getting drenched - even with an electric motor!

Awesome, you have the same e-bike setup as me! BBS02 750W mid-drive, and I also have the "bottle" style battery although I think mine is a bit larger at 13.5 aH, 700wH rating. I have it on a large steel frame set up to be upright riding, almost "Dutch" style, with high, swept back handlebars, and a double kickstand. But it also has disc brakes, and I can haul a trailer to the grocery store with it, or my kid on a tag-a-long bicycle. My commute is 30 miles round trip and fairly hilly, and the battery seems to be just enough to make the trip at around a 17 MPH average pace, which is much faster than the 12-13 pace I'm capable of on my normal road bike.
@HeatherNicholds7 жыл бұрын
sweet setup!!! the battery doesn't do too well on a road bike, we had to put in a solid connection because it kept shorting out with the bouncing along the road... nice, I like your disk brakes + grocery trailer :D that's what I'm aiming for in version 2.0 for myself... thanks for sharing your specs!

The only draw back for me is that biking keeps my body tilted. That does not allow the chi flows from my root chakra to the upper chakas. Since awakening is opening all chakras and have them all connected. Biking prevent it from happening. Prashant Trivedi said the best exercise is to sit up straight, like body centering. I understand not everybody will agree, but I believe that to be true.
@maurituomisto80074 жыл бұрын
Your chi is not flowing because you are sitting on it while biking. Try standing on the the pedals once in a while and the chi comes out with a loud noise. Works well!

You need to do what you want to do , not what anyone else wants you to do. I cycle most days, and can usually get to work faster on my bike than I can in a car. Everyone suddenly becomes an "expert" in your chosen activity when you do something that they couldn't or wouldn't do. 😂

Great video. I am very pro bike as a means of transportation, and I would love to be able to use it as a commuter, unfortunately where I live in Manitoba is not a place in the winter time where I would think the most dedicated die hard cyclists would ever ride. With the extreme cold in the winter, and plenty of wind all year round, and the fact that I live in the country, virtually keeps this dream from any more then a couple days a year down the gravel road in the summer. But if I lived in the city down where it was warm, I would certainly take advantage of this form of transportation.
