Hua Cheng winning in the civil debates is more impressive to me cause he would have had to have taught himself literally everything for the debates. Civil gods tend to be, like, scholars and essayists and probably philosophers (people who are mostly formally educated) and then there's HC whose mortal life was spent in a turbulent household, then on the streets, then as a soldier. Like, we talk shit on his calligraphy (understandable tbh) but he probably had to wedge that between learning all of the vast knowledge, wisdom, and general debate skills to beat the civil gods

Well, we see how Hua Cheng is smart from the very beginning :) in the Manhua and donghua, he immediately starts spitting out philosophy when he meets Xie Lian in the cart heading to puqi shrine. XL says something about "all gods are equal, so are all living being" and HC says something along the lines of "Equal? People talk about equality. If it's achieved, will there still be gods? " This man had to have studied hard before kicking the civil gods booties lol Afterwards, XL is just referring to HC like he's a google search engine throughout the entirety of the novel... HC has all the answers lol.

I agree. It's really underestimated how much effort he needed to put into being so well educated to take on not just normal scholars, but the gods of scholars. It also makes complete sense that his handwriting is so bad because that's the only thing that can't be effectively self taught.

The most interesting thing about Hua Cheng to me is how everything he’s done for Xie Lian would be incredibly creepy in literally any other context. The Cave of Ten Thousand Gods is something straight out of a stalker story, and it sounds REALLY bad out of context. But knowing that Xie Lian is a god without a following, Hua Cheng’s undying faith and all of his statues and murals dedicated to Xie Lian likely were single-handedly keeping Xie Lian alive with some semblance of spiritual power. It also makes Mu Qing and Feng Xin’s reactions to the cave make a whole lot of sense because they knew Xie Lian before he was a god. To them, this WAS the den of a stalker rather than a massive temple for a deity. It’s also why Hua Cheng gets so embarrassed and afraid of rejection when Xie Lian discovers that all the statues and portraits there are of him, because for as much as Hua Cheng admires and worships Xie Lian, he also recognizes that Xie Lian is still a person and has the right to choose whether or not he accepts this admittedly obsessive level of worship. I had a shower thoughts moment when I realized that the cave of ten thousand gods is just an ancient version of an idol/celebrity shrine room - like an UBER obsessed fan having thousands of merch related to their favorite artist. Creepy but totally possible and not unrealistic.

You also know that HC turned down the position to become a god is because he would be on equal to XL if he ever ascended again, but he didn't want it. He was a follower, someone who was happy to be a stepping stone. While he wants to protect XL and be the most powerful, he wanted to remain his follower rather than be of equal quality.

Also, I just thought, he’s able to help Xie Lian much more effectively as a ghost because, it gets rid of the issue of worshippers, like I’m pretty sure ghosts don’t need worshippers to gain power whereas gods do. Meaning, Hua Cheng could help Xie Lian much more effectively as a ghost because he could get stronger on his own whilst also having time to make statues, murals and temples for Xie Lian.

@@RedBanana_ yeah, as long as his ashes are safe, he can technically exist forever. In contrast, gods like Xie Lian need worshippers. That's how Hua Cheng destroyed all the gods who humiliated Xie Lian. I believe he wouldn't want to be in a position where he can't 1. Worship Xie Lian (how does a god worship another) 2. Protect him 3. Be stronger for him (having a Heavenly Emperor means that Hua Cheng won't be top brass, unlike him being the Crimson Rain Sought Flower) 4. Serve him by his side (Have you ever heard of a god living in somebody else's palace?)

I think three thousand lanterns are a reference to when Xie Lian saved ghost flame Hua Cheng in book 4: "Behind the back of this nameless ghost, there were three thousand lanterns flowing languidly along the night. It said, “I have a beloved who is still in this world.”" I mean, the guy spent 800 years looking for his beloved, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually replayed his memories of him for a millions times and even counted all the lanterns :)) I'm basically reading the book for the fourth time now, I don't think my obsession with this story is any less than Hua Cheng's obsession with Xie Lian

As a novel reader, I couldn’t hold back crying because of how well you described Hua Cheng’s Love and Devotion for Xie Lian. I don’t think anyone will be able to write a better novel and pairing than Tgcf. MXTX will have to surpass herself too to do that, and even then I don’t think I will put any pairings above HuaLian. Why I love Hua Cheng? I looked all three outstanding lovers very carefully. Lan Zhn was a fateful lover but he could not forget for a long time where he came from. He did not commit at the beginning. He pined but he did not act. Wen Kexing could not forget who he was. How elegant he was, how much he was willing to do. He kept preening himself. Hua Cheng had not ego, no place to come from, nothing to gain or protect. He loved unconditionally from the very beginning. He never asked for anything or counted the cost. He had only one aim, to serve the person he loved. My vote goes for Hua Cheng. Should we be all so lucky.

Wen Kexing is great, but he's not a MXTX character, but from the novel The Faraway Wander's by Priest. I would compare Shen Yuan vs Shen Jiu from SVSSS which was MXTX first novel. Shen Yuan gets so caught up in what he remembers of the novel that he forgets to stop and just listen to Luo Binghe. LBH was just a bit yandere and SQQ was just doing everything he could to survive with limbs intake.

I don’t know. I always liked how Lan Zhan failed to protect Wei Wuxian the first time around. Aside from it making the story infinitely more tragic for both sides, I also felt that it subverted tropes and made his character more 3-dimensional and realistic in some ways: as much as he loved Wei Wuxian, he also had loyalties to his brother, uncle and sect, and in trying to balance his loyalties to all 4 of them, he ended up failing to save Wei Wuxian and lived in regret for 13 years. In that sense, Hua Cheng’s loyalties were always a lot less divided, so he didn’t have the same problem.

I love the equality in their relationship. Hua Cheng is always there for Xie Lian, no matter what, he’ll always protect his dianxia. But he still lets Xie Lian be his own person. He’s possessive but not controlling. They’re on equal ground, a king of heaven and a king of hell, both utterly devoted to each other. DONT GET ME STARTED ON THAT ONE EXTRA. Hua Chengs birthday, Xie Lian wants to give him a gift. Long story short, things don’t work out so perfectly, but it really drives home AGAIN how much they’re willing to do for each other. Hua Cheng was willing to never see Xie Lian again, and Xie Lian was willing to live in pain forever just to see him. It’s just “no thoughts only Hua Cheng” (honestly same) I’m sure everyone here could rant for hours about their relationship and the story, so thank you for reading all the way to here if you did :) and thank you for the amazing video, Kictor!!

@@inmarcesible_sonrisa I personally really liked, "It's not easy being a master" and "Let's talk about that one guy who transmigrated to pursue me" (which is more along the lines of svsss premise with systems, and there is a bit of a condition to it. Since it's a spoiler I'll leave it at the end of the comment if you don't want to read it) another which is a bit lower on the list "My junior still hasn't killed me" (which also has a system/transmigration). They're not exactly 'historical' genre but they do have that sense of equality. So, about "Let's talk", one of the mains is quite manipulative, but they end up being woken to that fact and adjust their attitude. I liked how the MC wasn't stupid and realized, calling ML out on his behavior. Things worked out in the end, actually, so it does have a HE.

I agree with this whole video wholeheartedly!!!! For people who seriously say that Hua Cheng is a stalker, it is not stalking, he didn’t even know where Xie Lian was. He spent 800 just hoping to find him one day to see if he was ok and he did, but again, that was after 800 years. Even that as well shows his devotion to Xie Lian and how much he cares for him. Another point is that, Hua Cheng said that even if Xie Lian did not share the same feelings, that it would be ok. That he would be ok as long as he got to help and stand by Xie Lian. Everything Hua Cheng has got going on is just great

MXTX has even stated that San Lang always missed meeting up with DianXia because one has extremely good luck and the other extremely bad. Their luck auras cancelled each other out, meeting San Lang again was extremely good luck so naturally it took 800+ years for them to meet and finally get together. People really don't understand the definition of stalker at all. Between Calamity DianXia almost unleashing the Human Face Disease on Yong' An and Mount YuJun, they weren't in the same area at the same time let alone the same city. San Lang only found out DianXia was both a soldier in Ban Yue and the GuoShi of Yong'An *centuries* afterwards. Was he watching him from Mount YuJun onwards? Even when he wasn't physically present? I don't doubt it but only because he genuinely cares him and knows how DianXia was hurt by those that should have stood by him. He also never tried to compromise his autonomy or make him feel unsafe, he questioned his decisions and made suggestions but is very respectful and supportive. He would have been happy to just be a devoted believer and nothing more, because I'm sure that he never believed that DianXia would or could fall in love with him not realizing that his Beloved GeGe had been falling for him since Mt YuJun.

I never thought he was a stalker... stalkers are mostly obssesive people that they do whatever it takes to be part of their idol.. steal something they used or sometimes they are hurting them by being a stalker. But San lang wasn't like that his love was true.. and his dedication and love for him behind the scenes is so fluffy none would lov you for a hundreds of years like that..some may either forget you and he didn't even force himself towards him they became friends then eventually lovers and that's cute 😄

I just got into the TGCF universe only recently and i finished the whole book a few days ago. For me another reason that i really like Hua Cheng is because despite dedicating himself as Xie Lian's protector, he never treated Xie Lian like a damsel in distress. Yes, he'll be ready to save and protect Xie Lian anytime, but most of the time, he actually let Xie Lian fight his own battle. He just gave his utmost support (cough)spiritualpowertransfer(cough) and just stand guard to save Xie Lian during critical moments. I love when he just transferred all of his spiritual power and just told Xie Lian that he shouldn't worry coz he's the strongest and definitely can win this battle against Bai Wuxiang. He even let Xie Lian fully control that giant ass divine statue and do whatever he wants, he just kept supporting him through spiritual power (Ho Ho). Also he truly respects Xie Lian's thoughts and decisions. Like whenever Xie Lian decided to go on dangerous/risky mission, instead of forbidding him to go for safety reason, Hua Cheng just followed along to ensure his safety. I just love how his love for Xie Lian is so great and strong, but never so restricting, so Xie Lian can have also have lots of growing space. Hhh... like, where can i find a man like him??? (cries)

Hua Cheng is one of my favourite characters ever. He's so interesting and i never took him as just a love interest. One thing i hope the tgcf la does different from the book is to show us his backstory- childhood, what happened in mt tonglu etc 😔

Hua Cheng is easily one of my favorite characters. He’s so interesting and intriguing. You never know what he is thinking but at the same time sometimes you just know exactly what he is thinking when it comes to Xie Lian. I adore all of his romantic gestures towards Xie Lian, especially the 3,000 lanterns. My heart felt so warm and fluttery as I read how Xie Lian looked up at the lanterns in the sky in awe. Hua Cheng did not half ass the gesture. He went all out not only to demonstrate his adoration for Xie Lian but to also - as Kictor wisely stated - say “Fuck you” to the other Heavenly Officials. As you read the novel, you feel Hua Cheng’s dedication to Xie Lian and you truly believe that he is more than absolutely worthy to be Xie Lian’s number one follower. The fact that one follower is more than enough for Xie Lian just makes me love Dianxia even more. It shows that we can all move forward in life as long as one person believes in us wholeheartedly.

Not sure where I read it but I saw either a theory or fact that Hua Cheng - after ascending to the heavens left because he didn't find Xie Lian there and by returning to the mortal world he could continue to be Xie Lian's believer keeping him from disappearing (like other gods whose followers have long forgotten about them). It's really beautiful because it is their faith in each other that literally makes them immortal --> HC is a believer in the god XL, and while XL exists & won't scatter his ashes, HC won't ever fully disperse

If I find a guy who'd be a liiittle bit as loving as San Lang, I'd instantly hit the jackpot. Reading the book showed me just how much love and sadness a person can hold. It impacted me deeply. I honestly cannot put into words how much I love the relationship between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. My heart is aching. Hua Cheng has to be one of the best, if not the best, character(s) written of all time.

Hua Chung is pretty much every female fantasy of an ideal man rolled into one - super hot and sexy, strong and powerful - kind of a bad boy, yet emotional and vulnerable, completely devoted, soft and tender to the right person, smart, funny, gets shit done, amazing in bed and oh yeah....he's also rich and snappy dresser lol. What's not to love! Oh thank you so much for making this video and pointing out Hua Cheng's qualities! The best part about mxtx's novels and actually many other chinese pure love novels is the one true love concept where the MC and ML don't have lovers in the past and are just soulmates of each other from start to finish in their novel's universe. It's such a thoroughly romantic concept in itself. Also requires absolute loyalty and trust in their partner! And Hua Cheng is like an epitome of this concept. His words which you told in the video - if my ashes were destroyed, there would be no reason for me to be here - i think anyone would be dying to have such a romantic partner for them. Xie Lian is such a lucky person in this aspect! 😆 I keep feeling that mxtx might have eaten lots and lots of sweets to write such a sweet love between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian. 😂 After thinking about the points you mentioned in the video and recollecting all the events going on in heaven in the novel, the netherworld seems to be a better place than heavens 😅 Gods seem to be even more despicable compared to Ghosts! Hua Cheng is also very smart! He knows how to tactfully handle gods who are much more experienced than him. This aspect of him reminds me of Wei Wuxian from MDZS, who also is a master when it comes to joining the dots and cleverly finding the big picture from all the durty politics going around the sects in the mdzs universe. (I'm still anticipating your video on your mdzs thoughts 🙏 because i keep wondering whether after reading mdzs will tgcf still be your favourite novel or will it change. For me, nothing can touch mdzs's hard slap to your face with the way some events are depicted in it. It's very human and very powerful! 😫 )

I have to say my fave couples are really Hua Cheng and Xie Lian from tgcf and Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan from Guardian. I think because there’s so much trauma in both of those relationships but they’re still good partners. Oh sometimes they have moments - like we all do - but they actually treat each other *good*.

Honestly what he did makes sense imo, because if he tried to defend Xie Lian they were outnumbered by like 30 people, they would have just gotten beat up lol. Logically it makes sense to take their side without physically harming XL and then going back to help Xie Lian in a way that wouldn't get them in trouble (when he brought them food.). I think XL and MQ is a case of a person who makes choices based on their feelings vs a person who is rational and rather cold.

One thing is for sure: We all want that kind of lover (Hua Cheng) in our lives( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ , the Author of the novel was a GeNiuS , the journey of hua cheng finding his beloved was certainly heartbreaking but at the end it was still a happy ending(´∀`) I may as well be having a heart attack because of the up and downs of the novel but it was worth reading it ,one of the best novels that I read.😌

I wish the author of this masterpiece novel will write another story of a man and woman romance. He and his face (Xie lian) is so beautiful. Even Beautiful than any manhua female I have ever seen , a great salute to Starember for creating such breathtaking arts(almost everything in this manhua is outstanding and aesthetic and amazingly done). So when I was reading the novel that face remained in my memory. I was going through it like its a pretty and kind woman who had some misfortunes but a lover is waiting for her. And then in one chapter our Wind god asks something like "hey wanna change form? Lets change into female form" and that's when I snapped out of it like "oh my! Its Xie lian , its a guy".......... and at that time I seriously wished Xie lian to choose female form before going to Gambler's den...... Oh my GOD! Just imagine how or what could it have been if he had done that , then it would be the most prettiest manhua female character my eyes could see yes a true treat to the eyes............ So I seriously wish Mo Xuang To Xiu will write a Guy+Girl lovestory and staremeber will draw it and Bilibili will release it ...... Oh....... Even the thought about it gives me several chills........ ❤

I think he only feels comfortable/confident enough with himself with Xie Lian around. One extra hints that he shifts when they make love (his voice changes in Xie Lian's recollections) - and I think it's an indicator of how he purposefully uses his shifting powers for foreplay :))))
