Why I Love Orthodoxy

Now that I've addressed both Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, it's time to take a look at what I love about Orthodoxy! I discuss asceticism, theosis, and other theological distinctives and spiritual realities of Orthodoxy. As this is the final episode of this series, I wrap up with my final conclusions and advice for those looking into the faith for themselves!

But, for the first 1500 years of Christianity, the great apostasy was a revolt against the authority of the pope. This is the great schism, the bible alone and now the traditional Catholic movement.

Being surrounded by wayward doctrine in the American church, and having believed heresies myself, the first time I was exposed to Orthodox preaching the words resonated with every part of my soul. I was also made intensely uncomfortable by it, not being able to refute what was being said. I was raised my entire life singing hymns and praying to Jesus in the various non-denominational "churches" I went to. But being a Christian is about going where Christ is. It's about moving where you're at to go to Him. I knew if Orthodoxy was the true and original church of Jesus, the body of Christ made manifest on earth, that's where I want myself and my family to be.

Would highly recommend the last 2 episodes of Lord of Spirits ("Torah Torah Torah", and "Torah 2: Back in the Habit") both of those have been fundamental in changing my view of how to read the Bible and understanding Orthodox worship. Didn't get a chance to go to a Pascha service this year (I've heard that's not the best place for Protestant enquirers to start anyways), but hoping to attend liturgy with my wife sometime this year. Praying that when we do, the initial experience speaks for itself enough that neither of us need to be convinced any further.

I have to agree with you that Great Lent/Pascha season is not the best time to inquirer into orthodoxy. It's super intense and exhausting, but it's a wonderful, beautiful experience that will draw you even closer to the Lord. I'm a catechumen now and come from a catholic background and find orthodoxy overwhelming at times, lol. So much to learn. So my advice is to jump in, come to liturgy, stick around for coffee hour, talk to people and say hi to the priest. Pray and have fun!

I find it very interesting how many protestant priests/bishops tend to drift toward Orthodoxy later in life. That could just be confirmation bias, but the fact that it happens speaks volumes. I find that Christanity is very hard to accept. Some things defy logic, like Jesus being able to heal the disabled, to walk on water, and other miricales, and that's just the surface value stuff. Logically speaking, its difficult for my find to accept it or to ignore it. Also, the idea of things outside of my control, and that I can be effected by those things outside of my control scares me. That fear is amplified when I also fear of getting taken advantage of in both a mental and monetary sense. I fear that I may be taken advantage of if I accept the teachings of Christanity. Yet I have been treated well by those that practice it and I personally agree with its teachings. I want to believe all of this is true, and that people will honor thier words, but I fear that I am being foolish, and that my need for something greater than myself may lead to the degredation and explotation of myself. Thank you for making theses videos. It has made me think of a lot of things, but how does one get over this fear of illogical thinking and explotation?

If you follow the true faith, it’s between you and Christ. Our Priests and Bishops face the same alter we do. And there is zero push for conversion because it must come from the heart. And yes, it can be hard to accept that forces outside our control can affect us. The same can be said about nuclear bombs existing, I suppose. If you have to submit to the idea that you are not in total control of your life, you might as well submit to the ultimate authority: the creator of time and space. And remember: What sounds impossible to us is possible for God. He created all of existence from eternity. He makes the rules, so of course for us it sounds illogical to break them. Nothing is beyond His power. Look into the early church fathers. A lot of questions can be answered there.

Here's a logical argument for Orthodoxy: If the God of Orthodoxy doesn't exist, knowledge is impossible. This is because knowledge requires justification, and has metaphysical preconditions such as the world not being an illusion to exist. However the only way to justify these preconditions is divine revelation as it is the only way to ground metaphysics. A specific type of God that provides revelation is therefore required to make knowledge possible, and this must be the Orthodox God for four reasons 1) The essence energies distinction means we can truly interact with God 2) Orthodoxy is the only religion that has an infallible historically unchanged tradition 3) the Trinity is the natural conclusion of divine simplicity as God must have some way of knowing themselves 4) the Orthodox God justified all the preconditions for knowledge claims. One must say knowledge is possible as to say otherwise is self-refuting.

In future videos on this channel, I plan to address arguments for God’s existence and present compelling evidence for the truth of Christianity. However, your struggle is not unfounded or, as you identify, primarily “logical” in nature. Many atheists exuberantly claim “if I just had ONE good argument for God’s existence I would believe!” And yet, they’re somehow never convinced when presented with them. It bears a striking resemblance to the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in the gospels. The rich man begs Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his family about the torments he experiences after death. Abraham replies “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” And yet, Christ is Risen, as many of the comments here proclaim, and still many disbelief. Let me be clear - I’m not condemning your lack of faith. I’m merely agreeing that it’s not an intellectual issue. In fact, the intellect can even get in the way sometimes. We have a wonderful, simple prayer from the gospels “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” Even I pray this sometimes. I would especially recommend this one to you. If you’re serious about overcoming these hurdles and coming into communion with the Living God, live the life and trust that in so doing, He will make Himself known to you. Go to church. Pray at home. Read the scriptures. In time, I believe God will honor your struggle. I hope that the content I provide on this channel will be of aid for you, though it is merely intended to be that - a supplement. God bless!

Ha! That depends on what exactly you’re looking for. In short, scholastic/reformed/cataphatic theology aims to describe God by positive statements, what God IS (God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all of the omni claims essentially). Whereas apophatic theology aims to describe God by negation, or what God is NOT (God is not creation, God is not impersonal, etc.). The trouble the West runs in to with their methodology is they try to pin God down like doing so is some kind of science, so much so that they, in my opinion, over-define God and try and force Him into their categorical boxes. In my experience, the more mystical theology of the East allows for a greater experience of God that can enter-in fully and transfigure the soul. This is a result of the essence-energy distinction, our understanding of the Incarnation, and the sacraments. Hopefully this helps!

@@untoages I know the subject pretty well. I just like the way you present things. As far as I am concerned, all of Western Christianity went (truly) wrong with the adoption of Latic scholastic theology in the 1,200's or so. This resulted in all sorts of terrible things including the theology that started the Reformation. Not understanding the root of the problem, the Protestants came along and said hold my beer. They squeezed God into a box not to exceed the size of the (fallen) human intellect. It's why Western Christianity, namely the Protestant faiths, are an atheist factory today.

@@GlorytoGod580 The laity has a responsibility to keep the hierarchy in check in Orthodoxy. If we see an issue, we bring it up to the priest. If nothing is done, we go to the bishop. So on, so forth. We’re not ruled top-down by one single hierarch, we have a voice. There was a story of a priest who went to some interfaith gathering and basically said all religions lead to God. When he came back, he discovered that his keys to the church no longer worked. The laity had changed it after he articulated heresy.

When was the last time the Orthodox called an ecumenical council? We maintain a church that is one, holy, Catholic and apostolic. How does Orthodoxy express this oneness and unity? Please, I would like a response.

The term "ecumenical" means an imperial, or "of the empire". It doesn't meant "council that fixes doctrinal disputes" The last Orthodox Empire died with the murder of the Holy Tsar Martyr Nikolai II. With all kindness intended, I believe you have been misled to believe that ecumenical synods are the normative methodology of maintaining correct doctrine amongst the populace. That is ONE method, certainly, but the source and origin of right doctrine is the Holy Spirit working through the hierarchy, clerics, and laity when they obey God and live in Christlikeness. The people who do that are the saints. The saints in every age, and in every place, are the method God uses in imperial/ecumenical councils, local councils, in every country, state, county, city and even in your local parish. That is how the unity of doctrine is maintained, that's how the unity of faith is maintained. As scripture says, the Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth and the true faith is once delivered unto the saints.

@@iakov1906 Your response is anything but satisfactory. All of the ecumenical councils in which the Orthodox participated were ordered toward the resolution of doctrinal issues. My question pertains to how come the Orthodox have never called an ecumenical council since its separation from Rome? If a dispute among the Orthodox arises as no doubt it has from time to time how have they resolved them apart from excommunication of one another?

Come home. Listen to Brian Holdsworth’s KZbin video, “Why I’m not Orthodox”. Back in the day you had the original church fight about who should have infallible authority: the original counsels where teachings were upheld, debated, and authorized, or the original office of the Pope, who infallibly authorized the counsel’s decisions and guided the church. Even if you disagree strongly with me, you are better off carrying your conviction while still exposing yourself to the opposing view. So I challenge you to watch Brian’s video among any historical reviews of Orthodoxy to see if that church is truly who she says she is before the schism.

I’m familiar with some of Brian’s content and I watched that video you’re referring to years ago before I became Orthodox. I found his criticism very lacking and unconvincing, especially in comparison to the criticism levied by Orthodoxy against Catholicism. Trust me, I’ve looked into the history regarding this topic; I didn’t want to make a hasty decision. The last three videos in this series address why I didn’t become Catholic. I appreciate your concern, but I am home.

@@untoages well, your last couple of videos slandered the Catholic Church. You claimed that Pope Francis is okay with same sex unions when he never said that. Fiducia Supplicans is NOT an infallible teaching on faith and morals and isn’t even binding to church faithful for one thing. Secondly, the document explicitly rejects the idea that two persons of the same sex is a marriage and states that the intention for blessings were for those who carry the cross of same sex attraction, NOT the union of these two persons. Also, Pope Francis has even verbally rejected same sex marriage in a plethora of interviews in 2018 and thereafter. That’s besides the fact. The truth of the matter is that Orthodoxy relies on strawman arguments to favor their position. Catholicism acknowledges her failings, takes the punches for the sins of her faithful, and strives to bring all of God’s children to repentance and conversion of heart. The Orthodox church has elements of Spirit of Truth, but she won’t survive on ecumenical counsels and founding church’s alone - she needs the whole Truth, and one day I hope we can bridge that gap.

Brian's reason for not being orthodox was that he's uncomfortable around immigrants. "Too ethnic", even though Roman is an ethnicity and the same regions and ethnicities have local churches within the papal system

@@iakov1906 you didn’t watch his whole video. Part of it was the issue of the fact that he didn’t feel like he belonged. But he stresses that isn’t the only reason, that was only part of it. I don’t think a person or celebrity should convince anyone to believe anything. I’m not convinced by UntoAges points in being Orthodox. What I was encouraging is being well rounded and educated by both sides of the isle. Brian isn’t even a lead apologist for Catholicism. If you’re looking into that I would suggest Trent Horn, Jimmy Akin, or Dr. Scott Hahn - not as a means to be “convinced” or “converted” but to get the whole picture and not solely rest your beliefs in an echo chamber.

Orthodox are unbiblical many times, tradition is of man it’s not going to always be biblical. The Bible refers to Mary as the mother of Jesus over and over, yet orthodox just insist on referring to her as the mother of God.

@@untoages I’m not for the isms and schisms my friend. It’s clear as day to see what is manmade unbiblical practices which they made up using their faulty human logic, like having female bishops or pastors. I’m sure the apostles knew that Jesus is God, yet they still referred to Mary as the mother of Jesus. Mother of God is an inappropriate title for her and that is why it is not found in scripture. However mother of Jesus is found in scripture more that once.
