"The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude." -Uthan the Perverse

I have three armies at the moment: T'au are my bedrock, the ones I started with. They have their own lore in my head, each one will eventually have names in T'au script on their baserims, each 'kind' of unit has their own variation of the color scheme so I can tell them apart but also for an in-lore reason. They're the ones I know, the ones I know how to play and the ones I am ready to buy big models for. Genestealer cults are my second one and they also dragged in imperial guard because of their brood-brothers rule (was pre-codex). They are the ones I want to give more theming to, lean more into the painting then the playing until they're well and ready. Imperial guard was first just a single sentinel and a baneblade after I had seen your magnetization video. Now a combat patrol has been added, which I'm working on now so I have a foot in the door and it'll be easier to continue with them.

For me it helps, when I think of some homebrew Lore for the stuff i paint. My Blood Angels life on a Necron Tombworld and has just realised it, my Sisters are made Up of two Orders that just started to work together against a Black Legion threat and my AdMech are a cult, that belives Cawl is becoming a avatar of the omnisiah and does his dirty work. With ideas like that in my head the models just come together way better!

I have the same problem like you. I have to many armys ^^ My main forces are Space Marines, Deathguard and Stormcast Eternals. Then i have a bunch of "procratepainting" armys. Armys that i have simply because they acumilated over time because i whanted to paint a model for them here and there. Mostly armys from Starter sets. Nighthaunts, Krewl Boys, Necrons. I have always a hand full of models build and primed at my desk from a cupple of armys and i am just painting what i fancy today. My Stormcasts and Space Marines are my eye candy armys. into those i spend the most time on, having them all nice and shiny. My Deathguard on the other hand is my "experimentation" force. Here i test out all kinds of colour schemes, and painting techniques. Each and every model is painted differently. It started out because i could not decide on a painting scheme for them and out of a sudden i had a playable force of a bunch of ranomly painted models...and i just keeped going. So for your tyranids i would advice you to just pick a bunch of models that you would like to paint. it dos not matter if they are good on the table. they might be in the next edition , and with the 3 years cycle, thats not far out. Maybe some Genstealers? they would fill out a dual purpose of your tyranid force AND your genestealer cults ;-)

I don't play Warhammer 40k, so I have no connection to the play style. But I have really enjoyed painting the figures for many years. I started with a white, clean Tau army on red Martian soil. Then I added Space Marines in a blue-grey. Then came the Necrons, Adeptus Mechanicus, Adepta Sororitas, Eldar, Tyranids, Death Guard and now also Adeptus Custodes and Imperial Army. I paint different factions every now and then, last week it was an Adeptus Custodes, a Space Marine and two Death Guards. I manage around 120-150 figures per year. I love how the armies slowly grow over time and each army has a different color scheme, painting style and technique. The Tau army is very clean and the Necrons are totally worn out and dirty. The Death Guard's equipment rusts, while the Adeptus Custodes' armour shines. Each army also has its own basestyle, which adds to the creativity. For me, each new faction was a step on my painting learning curve.

My ‘real’ army is my Necrons, they’re my first army and the ones I feel like I know how to paint well but efficiently. They’re usually my priority when I get new ones, since even after 2k points I feel like I’m missing a lot of important units for games (I’m fairly terrible at playing and have lost all my games the past couple months oof). I’m also starting a Sisters army, but about 1.5k points of them currently exist in various stages of built/primed cause I was gifted the two combat patrols and picked up some other stuff myself. I’ve started painting them, but they take me about twice as long to paint as Necrons, which is a bit overwhelming since unlike Necrons (which I mostly got a couple units at a time at most) I have so many Sisters units waiting to be painted at once. And then I’ve got Seraphon, cause a friend pulled us into Age of Sigmar. I only have the Vanguard box plus a Slann, and they’re not my priority at the moment, but at least they’re fully painted lol. They’re my ‘fun experiments’ painting army - weapons and armor have the same colors throughout, but every individual lizard is painted in a unique color scheme, and I enjoy working on them a lot because of that.

I'm building a Forces of Nature army for Kings of War. Part of it will also be moonlighting as a sea elf army in OPR Fantasy Regiments. What I like about it: inexpensive basic troops plus lots of big monsters that I plan to mostly sculpt or toybash. It's cheap and lets me be wildly creative without worrying that everything must be perfect - as a beginner this lets me try new things and actually learn. Plus I like the lore for Forces of Nature. I also recently bought two boxes of Oathmark elves I plan to use to build a lore-accurate Silmarillion Noldor army for OPR Fantasy Regiments and display. That one I will be working on lore accuracy, painting, freehand and getting everything looking RIGHT. I am a Tolkien fan, but I like bookverse more than movieverse and my favorite era is first or maybe second age, not third, and this is the army I wanted when I started looking into wargaming. I also have a couple of warbands for OPR fantasy skirmish (chivalrous kingdoms and high elves) that were learning to paint minis and play a wargame. They also mean I have something to play with while I'm building my bigger and newer projects.

I have two armies on paper, with a bit of a third forming but stalled. Black Templars are my original entry to the game. I started them with Indomitus. I love me some Templars and you can see the evolution of painting within the ranks. My second army is Thousand Sons. Mid-9th edition I got sick of my local playgroup being an Imperium face off (oh and the one Tyranids guy) so I leaned into something aesthetically pleasing. I love my TSons so much. The only thing that makes me sad is their rules in 10th basically cut their unit pool in half because so much just actively hurts you. Going into my proto-third army. When daemons got their 9th codex and chaos could soup them, I got a bunch of 3d printed Tzeentch daemons. They were pretty fun in 9th, but I haven’t used them in 10th with how they hurt the roster too badly (ok, I was doing just the changeling like everyone else was until the nerf said “must take a battleline unit for this” and that wasn’t worth it) Do I build a daemons force? Do I not? I’m not really loving them. The prints i went with were because they looked way cooler than the GW horrors but they’re a pain to paint

Cool video, made me do some introspection. I started 40K 15 years ago with space wolves. I picked up and half painted an eldar force about 13 years ago but it’s sat in a closet ever since. Meanwhile the space wolf force just keeps growing and growing. I just love pushing Viking super soldiers around the board but I also like to be reasonably competitive and play tournaments. Problem is, the ‘good’ stuff for marines changes so frequently that if you try to keep up like I have you end up with a massive collection that you’re only playing with a little part of at any one time. Doesn’t leave a lot of room for other armies. Every time I consider staring a new project I’ll usually just end up buying whatever space marine thing I want to add to my great company instead.

I love having variety...so I collect quite a few armies. The creation of the paint scheme, basing, background story and often how the main leaders favour certain units or how they became the most important, is an enjoyable part of the hobby for me. I do like having a reason behind why they look a little different than the box art.

One thing I did do recently was kitbash an individual inquisitor. I got sent a random Stormcast Eternal when I bought some stuff on eBay. I had no idea what to do with it, then just thought one day, "that would make a fun Inquisitor!". It was the most fun I've had since getting back into the hobby. It was a total one-off, I have no interest in an Agents of the Imperium army, it was just modelling for the sake of modelling, and I loved it. Need to do more of that.

My first army was Blood Angels. I fell out of the hobby and sold everything. When I got back into the hobby the one model that started it all was a custom Primaris styled Sanguinary Priest I made from the Primaris Ancient model. Now I'm pushing 2000 points painted in my current Blood Angels army. I love the wings, I love the vampirish Angel idea. I love the color red and I love there is variation in models color schemes. Gold, Black and Red. Keeps things fresh!

Really interesting video. I've just started collecting/painting again after many years away, and have started with Space Wolves, as that's what I had when I was a kid, so they have sentimental value. Otherwise, I recently subscribed to the new Hachette Combat Patrol series, just so I can experiment with painting different armies. I won't keep them all, as LoV and Genestealer Cults don't really appeal to me, but I think it will be fun to try out some armies I never really tried before. Imperial Guard jump out at me, as I like the down-trodden, underdog cannon fodder thing, Orks are fun because you can just go nuts, and I'd really like to try to paint a tyranid army. I have never seen one that has a grimdark aesthetic I really liked, so I want to experiment with that.

There are somethings in army collecting that are counterintuitive. And I know and a lot of ways this is different for different people. For me I love conversion, and so the armies that I enjoy building are the ones that take longer. Not to say that it's not satisfying to get something done but for me building something unique gives me the most satisfaction. Therefore those that take longer generally I'm in for the long haul and therefore I am willing to work on longer because I'm more invested. Perhaps that's the key is regardless of how you go about it you have to be invested if not you'll fall short and out of love.

Blood Angels are my comfort army... I never tire of painting Space Marines. I've got a smattering of other chapters and characters, little things here and there... but will always add to them. I've tried, and bounced off, building Orks, Necrons, and all Chaos factions. My first love army is Eldar, and always will be a favorite, but they sit there in a half-painted, half ready state. It's a lot more other games, though. Kill Team, AoS, little Old World, Shatterpoint, Crisis Protocol... some random minis here and there. The primed and half-finished never ends for me.

Looking forward to seeing what direction you take your tyranids in! A vanguard invader list with lots of genestealers, lictors, gargoyles and some raveners does sound cool. You could also flex your basing skills on the ravener jumping out of the ground. I'd love to see what you could do with that one. For your other armies, I think it might be time to let the grey knights and genestealer cults go. The grey knight have been living in a box for forever and you've tried fixing your genestealer cults so many times, but nothing really sticked. The death guard on the other hand I could see you adding to. Even if it's just painting up some weird spawn dudes in funky colors.

Somewhere along the way my creative juices just weren't firing on all cylinders and I ended up selling them. Still trying to figure out what happened, but the excitement to play them just wasn't there, and couldn't decide on a color scheme/paint recipe. Just got to a point where I found my excitement moving on to other models. Even with online games, three player games have that. Back in high school, Age Of Empires demo, two guys always throwing me of the board. Best game I had, I mined almost all resources, made camps all over, only to lose them again. Well, till my last camp, were I used ALL RESOURCES, a water in-capping(?), perfect for a harbor, with fortresses & watchtowers around it. They couldn't get true, no matter that one had a constant stream of warships and the other had a constant land army on the attack. What such games teach you, is staying alive. Escaping & restarting from the ground up, again, again and again, yet again. Then you play a normal game and the other gets quite frustrated with you. Hunted all over the map, back on starting location, with all the sweet resources and one hell of a camp. And those two, of that three player game? They too, became frustrated, no matter how many camps they wrecked, they kept finding camps of mine, after a while. So check which army has a respawn option and use that army, for those games.

My closet army is drukari. I love the models and the aesthetic but when I started collecting it was from before gathering storm and Celestine release. When I was a kid I liked playing Dawn of War and always loved the look of sisters of battle and would spend a ton of time messing around in army painter lol. Unfortunately as I do with Warhammer I can fall in and out of the hobby sometimes and when I had fallen out was when sisters got their new plastic models :o I told myself if I ever got back into Warhammer I was going to start collecting sisters and take all the painting knowledge I accrued during the drukari days to make them look as good as possible. Fast forward about 5 years and my bf wanted to get into kill team and didn't really enjoy the painting part that I love. He asked me about playing Warhammer cause it would probs be a game he would like and started collecting imperial guard. Told him I would join in and do sisters of battle cause I wasn't interested in playing drukari any more. Now I get to pour all my love and time into the sisters passion project I always wanted, and I even get to paint some imperial guard heroes from time to time (or cramming 30 infantry and bases in one night to get bfs army ready for a GT the following day lol). I've always thought the gameplay of Warhammer was meh but the hobbying is always going to be one of my true favorites. Even when I take breaks from time to time I can't help but watch painting tutorials sometimes just to learn some new ways to approach it in the future. Ty for the awesome vids really love your content. Your vids def help keep me out of the hobby slumps when I think to randomly pick up my paints at 2am lol

I started with the coolest model, Parasite of Mortrex, then started adding a few things and in 9th I kinda liked the idea of hormagaunt swarm. Then I got Leviathan box (minus barbs and termagants) and now 6 zoanthropes to get to 2K points. That's 15 datasheets plus ripper swarms and spore mines which can be spawned mid-game 😂

Well, I have an imperial army in Averland colors, some are old GW models, some are 3D prints. I've always wanted to have one and the colors and history of this province appealed to me. The second army are the Ultramarines, of all the orders they interested me the most. Besides, I have a whole stack of models from many different armies, e.g. Brittany, Orruks, Orcs, Skaven. These often serve as mobs in RPG sessions.

I dont have a Warhammer army (i just follow for the great painting advice), but i do own a lot of Battletech. Most "armies" there are a lot smaller, usually you play with like 4-8 miniatures per game. I usually paint up around 10-12 (organized as a 'Binary' or 'Company') per faction, and with now around 300 miniatures, i do have quite a few of them. Now, after gaining a lot more experience compared to when i started, i feel ready to paint up the Battletech equivalent of the 'own Space Marine chapter', my own personal mercenary group, which will be the only faction that goes way beyond that self-imposed limit of 10-12 units (with like 70). So yeah, even if that is a low number of total units per faction, it allows me to paint up sooooo many different liveries and camos which can be all super interesting and different in their own way, especially since most factions use very bold colors, patterns and color combinations.

I went a different route where my Inner Sphere mechs are all my personal group, but my personal group has had changes to their colors over the eras. The Succession Wars era mechs have a different take to the Clan Invasion to the “late” eras (I’m sort of rolling them all up into one because we so rarely go beyond civil war in my area). The clan mechs i built up a binary of Ghost Bears plus a star of elementals. It’s good enough. I treat it like my second army even if I can mix and match mechs of my choosing.

To expand the Tyranids, I suggest getting more termagaunts. Maybe another 30 so you have another full unit of 20 plus a unit of 10 to sit on home objective. Oh. And some Hormagaunts.

Your Tyrranofex painting video to me to get a Tyrranofex, he doesn’t look as good, but painted. I would suggest some exocrines and maybe a Norn or Maleceptor. Big bugs that shoot plasma are fun. Thanks for sharing your armies. I also have Ultramaines, very old Blood Angles, Orks, Eldar, and now Tyranids. I’m excited for Tyranids and Ultramaines.

When you get back to your Drukhari army build you should add some wyches but also I think Anhrathe or Harlequins could be fun. They can be affected by the power from pain rules just not stratagems or enhancements. I suggest this because currently my favorite part of that army is how each kind of unit has a fairly unique color scheme and more colors obviously equals more better.

I have 4 armies and my primary ones are Orks for 40K and Orcs and Goblins for Fantasy/Old world. But check this, as I have enough night goblin units (archers, spearmen, squig hoppers, spider riders etc) and enough trolls, I can literally play Age of Sigmar too, as Gloomspite Gitz! So 1 army actually gets me playing in 2 systems. I also have Bretonnians for Fantasy/Old world, which was my 1st army 22 years ago, before I saw the light of Gork and Mork. I recently started a Word Bearers army and I am already up to 1500 points of painted models. I play all 4 of them. So, no closet army for me. My youngest daughter (4yo) has shown an interest for Space Marines, but it's too early for her. Hopefully, she starts too in the years too come and we can have our battles at home. PS: As soon as orks were mentioned, I started smiling. Yes, no orky player can help it. 😊

My armies all have a narrative and that's what drives me. My first main army was GSC and I came up with a home planet, lore and color scheme for them, and each new model adds to the lore. By proxy, my guard army is riding that same narrative because I'm making them the PDF of that same infected planet. However, my current main is chaos knights and they're my art project army. I ask myself "What would be cool for a knight?" Then I work it into their army lore after the fact

I've been working on a personal custom "Crusade" type army of all the "loyalist" units I take fancy to, with the idea that they're a "rogue" faction being lead by their interpretation of age old Orders from the Emperor himself to protect mankind's future. Its a sorta vague, lore be damned(kinda) pet project of mine where I'm makeing my own legion with my own color scheme for fun. I hope to get good at sculpting and make my own primarch one day. I actually haven't played yet, as all my friends are too busy adulting these days to get their own armies off the ground. (We'll play one day, I swear it! ) So until them I'm just enjoying my time hashing out my legion with a little bit of everything.

i used to have necrons but got rid of them as i didn't love building and painting them so I traded them away for more space marines, orks, and nids. My other factions are fun to build for the most part and fun to paint. If and when i get into another army I want to get something chaos/demons or another xenos faction. when it comes to playing my armies I do 50/50 win rates with them all. Outside of 40k I have Ironjaws, kruelboyz, and Stromcast for AOS; Star Wars Legion is empire and Rebels; then i have about a dozen Battletech models.

Okay so now having watched the video my core armies are Ultramarines which is sorta like your necrons of just get it painted and call it done (also my first army) , orks cause of my pirate kitbashes and how chaptic they are, genestealer cults cause of how much effort i put into them and how much i love their playstyle and then all my necromunda stuff because it lets me paint a lot of different stuff with all the different gangs

You did a combat patrol tournament with the Necrons not that long ago... a year or so? Love the armies... crazy you have so many and your style exists but in such different ways... Go Tyranids!!! As a Nid player I always grabbed what I thought was cool. Behemoth can be very fun with lot of big bugs! Healthiest way to collect, for me, is to have an army in multiple games. Sadly I didn't follow my own advise and have 3 armies and 12 kill teams...

I have about 6 armies (Primaris only ultramarine successor, firstborn only Imperial Fists, Blood Angels, Night Lords, Tyranids and Ad Mech) but they're pretty much all 1000pts give or take! I've never really loved the idea of a 2000pt army and so just make 1000pt armies that are generally fluffy and I enjoy using that - the fact there's 6 means I can just switch between them all easily if I get bored of a playstyle!

I find myself doing things like this all the time. In my local community I am known for being the person people come to if they have a broken mini or missing parts cause I can usually make new ones pretty easily which also means I get "Paid" in broken mini's and when people are cleaning out there closets they tend to send me all the stuff they don't have room for so I can give it new life of help it find a new home so yeah no way I could ever play all the "Armies" I have laying around so I try to just focus on the ones I really love and maybe use the odd model here and there from other armies to one off projects lol

Without actually planning it, I seem to have four different Armies in progress. Black Templars, Necrons, T'au, and Death Guard. Right now Black Templars are at the top of my work list, but I keep switching back on fourth between Armies which is probably what I don't have a full 2000 points painted in any one!

As a Kings of War player, I have 3 armies right now: Elves Forces of the Abyss Magma Men(which I use the riftforged orcs list to represent) And what helps me paint is coming up with my own lore. While I think KoW lore is fine, the fact that it's a model agnostic system inspired me to build my own world. Have plans on building a halfling army at some point, too. This worldbuilding bug has bled into my 40k enjoyment as well. While I don't play, I've come up with a whole subsector that sounds like it would be a fun long-term painting project to me. Already have a Cerastus knight even. Speaking of which, does anyone here know the name of an absolute failure of a scientist? Not even getting lucky or accidently discovering something just bad at their job?

The comment of "How should they be painted?" keeping them away from the painting desk is my single biggest problem. Somehow I stumbled into a "meh" painted CSM army (basically streaking grime over wraithbone) but it was exactly the kinda thing I had in mind for literally a year for my ex-luna-wolves CSM. So I bought it and now that I "know how they should look" I'm so happy to work on them. Are the 2nd hand models I bought getting stripped and repainted eventually? Absolutely. They're still my template for now.
