Star Fox Adventures is beautiful to this day. The flashy combat, the different environments, the music, the kooky story. It was essentially my first Zelda game before I knew what Zelda was.

Something I do love is how, in spite of Adventures' reception, it still got proper play in Assault. Sauria's a visitable planet, you get to check in on Tricky, the relationship between Fox and Krystal is pushed forward - heck Fox even has a more clear through-line for his character, being significantly more reserved and smarter in Assault as a result of his actions on Dinosaur Planet. In spite of this game's rather tepid reception... it still got some closure. And that's a rarity for... well, all of Rare's properties from SFA's era, really, so that's really nice. But how can I adore this video if you don't do an impression of the Warp Stone OR the shopkeeper?

I was OBSESSED with this game as a kid. You could even say it was my first "Zelda" game. The continuous world with no loading screens was impressive even for a GameCube game, and to find it was originally intended to be an N64 title absolutely blew me away. It's also my favorite David Wise soundtrack. I love this game, and its flaws make it more endearing in a way. The Dinosaur Planet build being leaked was a great day as well, since I had been following that game for about 15 years, back when all we had were a scant few trailers. It was the holy grail of lost media for me. I never thought I'd ever see it resurface. Now I get to obsess over two games instead of just one 😊

My boyfriend was digging through GameCube games I had last night and he said he had never seen or played this one. I lit up and exclaimed how I remember it was shit on a lot, but that it was always one of my favorites!! So of course he wanted to see and we ended up playing for hours. "It's basically Zelda...??" He says, pointing out the parallels. And I kinda laughed like Huh. It totally is! Guess that explains why I liked it so much! That and all the dinosaurs, the different environments, gorgeous for the time! Poor Krystal, wish we got more of her. Fantastic job giving this game credit it's due!

I like that Star Fox Adventures introduced Krystal. I hate that she spends a majority of the time literally trapped in a crystal. I wish there were more moments where we can play as her rather than Fox.

In answer to your question: DK 64, I agree on, but bigger for me is Alpha Protocol. The sheer amount of role play you can actually pull off once you understand it is *insane.* To anyone who wants to try it, do a blind play through, and whatever your class is, make sure your pistol is upgraded. As far as I can tell, it's the only feasible way to take out bosses. Then, do a second play through where you have a guide to help you see the outcomes of all the conversations, and you will be amazed at the story you can actually craft.

I know everyone might not agree with this but one thing i do love about Adventures is that it broadened the possibilities of Star Fox. Don't get me wrong i love on rail shooter gameplay of Star Fox hell Star Fox 64 is one of my favourite games of all time. But, i love the concept that Star Fox can move beyond that more basic formula, and adventures showed it was possible. It may not have executed it in the best way possible, but i truly believe that the evolution for the Star Fox franchise lies in combining these two formulas into a seamless experience.

I just appreciate the fact that Adventures and Assault gave us something fresh and new gameplay wise, and it was fun imo. I mean fighting/helping dinosaurs on an alien planet and blasting and shooting robot space bugs? And fans hated that all because you got to run around on foot? And you still got to fly and shoot in both, but fans will be fans.

I will say the game is not as nearly as bad as people make it out to be. And I do think that one of the biggest reasons for its unpopularity is that it is in the Star Fox franchise, when it is really not a Star Fox game (nor was it intended to be). I recently tried the game out, completed a playthrough and will say I definitely wish I'd enjoyed it a little bit more? Idk maybe it's because I didn't grow up with it, or was doing something wrong. I definitely didn't mind the similarities to Zelda, since I love Zelda games, and this really felt like Rare's version of a Zelda game which is really cool. I wish I could have played as Krystal more, I knew she was in the game for a short time, but I didn't think it would be that short. I'm really curious about how the original game was supposed to turn out and how the character swapping was going to be. However I could not get over the amount of timed minigames. That was probably my biggest gripe with the game, since I tried to put my Star Fox biases aside to view the game for what it is. I don't mind it when a game has a little timed mission or two, or a race sequence, or a couple of minigame puzzles, but this game was absolutely full of these, and they were required for plot progression. I felt like I enjoyed a lot of the Zelda-like puzzles, and the classic Rare item collecting (I love banjo kazooie for similar reasons), but I felt like I kept getting interrupted by "go find this guy's thing in 45 seconds" or "sort all of these items in 1 minute". It was pretty stressful for what I expected to be a Zelda-like adventure game. Again, I definitely do not think this makes the game bad by any means, but it definitely made me want to play the game less. TLDR; I wish this game stayed as Dinosaur Planet, I thought it would be Rare's "Zelda Game" classic, but the timed minigames really bugged me. Overall, great video and I agree with a lot of the points. It's cool to look at the things you love critically sometimes!

I totally get it on the timed minigames. There were a couple that bothered me (particularly in cloudrunner fortress). Meanwhile, I still haven't beaten Majora's Mask after all these years because the time constraints in dungeons stresses me out too much and my brain freezes when it comes to puzzles. Haha.

This game affected my mind in ways that words can't describe. I don't think that ANYONE could ever recreate the vibe that this game had. When I say it had it all, I mean it had dinosaurs, aliens, furriest, lost civilizations, and magic all in one setting! Not to mention had it came out originally as it was intended then who knows where this game world could have gone! Tho starfox adventures made it look better than a lot of games today!

This was my first starfox game and I remember the arwing sections and final boss pissing me off and not liking them, I still don't tbh. I couldn't articulate it so well back then as a kid, but the vestiges of the previous starfox games getting their tendrils all over Adventures really soured the experience for me. Even Falco showing up at the end - I only knew who he was because of Smash Bros Melee. If not for that I woulda been like "WHO???"

I also really enjoyed this game as a kid. My only real complaints about it were that there are no side quests to find the gatekeepers for Walled City or Dragon Rock, and I also think there should've been 4 separate force point temples instead of just 2. And I agree I also wish you actually fought General Scales in the end, but I think all of these things were due to the game being rushed.

Interesting thing about the C-stick menu, if you play the game with an N64 controller (or a similar controller with c buttons rather than a c stick), the menu feels much more natural and less sensitive. Makes me wonder if it was intended for c buttons rather than the c stick, since it was originally an N64 game.

This is the second Starfox game I've recently put a bunch of time into. My first Starfox experience was in Starfox Assault. I jumped into Starfox Adventures after completing Assault and am currently 85% through the game. I've put about 20 hours into the game so far. 😆 Sometimes the solutions to some of the puzzles in the game made me want to bang my head against a wall because I was stuck for a while before figuring out what I needed to do to advance.

Star fox is known for being an on rails shooter. That's what makes it Star fox. Starfox 64 evolved the gameplay by adding some open area flying sections where you can freely fly. This game should have had all of that along with the adventure maps. You can't just take a game like star fox and out the blue make it mostly a straight out adventure game with little flying sections. Do you think you can take Link from Zelda and make him a game to where it's mostly an on rails flying game where he flies on a big bird shooting things. Yes they probably could pull it off making it a good game but the fans would hate it because it's a complete departure from it's roots. It was cool to finally get to play with fox outside the ship and that's not the problem. The problem was it being not enough flying sections, the music and Fox behaving out of character at times. Star fox is known for it's music as well.

They would have to rename it Fox McCloud Adventures to get these people off their case. To me, Star Fox Adventures couldn't be a more perfect title. I was aware of the character through Super Smash Bros growing up, but this was my first time playing as him in his own game. Star Fox 64 was Lylat Wars in my country, so there was never a connection there in the first place.

My first Starfox game was Star Fox 64, but i loved Adventures. It was a good Zelda type game, loved the style of humor, lots of variety and fun. But they really shoulda kept Krystal in a dual role, not a stupid "rescue the princess" direction again. I hated the barrel puzzles involving floating cuz that thing always flew off your hands at an unpredictable angle. Interestingly, i hated Star Fox Assault. That game is so sappy soap-opera like a baby anime. Everyone talks like they're 5 years old. Play Star Fox 64 and you will see, everyone there talks and acts like they are actually in a war. That game takes itself seriously and i love that in games, but Assault does not, and it blows me away that we as kids got the adult style but we as adults get the baby style. Happens in many franchises unfortunately. So ironically my favorite part of Assault is the ground missions, especially mission 6 Sauria lol.

Star Fox adventures is very paradoxical to me, perhaps reflective of the unieque mess of its developement history. Objectively I find the gameplay to be flawed on almost every level, and yet (as the video put it so well) I find that it's world really caputred my imagination and interest like few other worlds in video games. Even the aspects of gameplay which I could not call "good" takes on this endearing campy quality to me and sort of fits within the oddly capitivating nature of the game's world. I don't think this is just childhood nastalgia because I had plenty of other games at that age and none ever captured me like this one. I think it comes down to the fact that its world was outlandishly rich with life and campy charecter, a true feeling you could be blindsided around the next corner, and thematic elements which should have felt like they clashed but somehow it still convinced me of the unity of its diverse world.

If I can sum up the Problem with StarFox as a whole. Is that This Franchise Came out too Late to be apart of the Arcade Experience, When Rail Shooters made bank. And when they directly pushed Fox into Adventures, it was (technically) the Third game in the Franchise! Meaning that both The Fanbase and the Games were not prepared for that divergence in gameplay! This honestly should’ve been a Spin-off title! Something that should’ve been left on the N64 while a Newer title should’ve been worked on for the GameCube. I don’t doubt the Creativity behind this, nor do I doubt the reason for why it was made. There is heart and effort, but it was ultimately ruined by a Bad decision, by bad Circumstances, and has sadly left the Star Fox IP in state of flux. Miyamoto really wants this game series to be on top, but everything he has tried has left people second guessing their purchases. I figured Had Nintendo released an updated Star Fox 2, it would’ve made more sense after 64, but would need a compelling story to truly sell its ideas. Dinosaur Planet could’ve still been it’s own game, as personally I do think what would’ve made it interesting is to place in Easter eggs that Tie this Spin-off as being part of the Star Fox universe if an Arwing could be seen flying over head or if Say a destroyed Land Master tank was able to be seen nearby. It would’ve been much better received. I do get that there is a five-six Year period between these games (1997 - 2002). It wouldn’t have been a bad call to try and renegotiate on the terms between Rare, Nintendo, and Miyamoto! It’s just a shame that looking back on this franchise, it just feels doomed that it couldn’t be anything more than a Tech demo.

There are so many games I've enjoyed that are widely hated. Final Fantasy II (And I do mean II not IV) and VIII are both in my top five favorite games in the series and while I don't think much of X-2's plot it gave me the option to switch jobs mid battle which was something I thought would be fun back when I first played V in 2001. More recent games I like that get widely bashed include Mass Effect Andromeda (Yes the story and characters are weaker then the previous games but the combat is a lot of fun, I missed the exploration elements that were removed in 2, I liked the freeform skill growth system, and even if I did use the Engineer profile for ninety percent of the game I liked having the option to change my build if I desired) Homefront The Revolution (It wasn't the Freedom Fighters successor I've been hoping for since Freedom Fighters 2 vanished into the great pit of canceled games but it was enjoyable though I feel the DLCs are far too restrictive on where you can go) Cyberpunk 2077 (IMO the games technical flaws are massively exaggerated because I started playing on a basic PS4 launch weekend and I usually got four to five hours between crashes or glitches requiring a reload and the Fallout PS3 games I consider it a miracle if I manage an hour's play without a crash or reload requiring glitch, and even the worst Cyberpunk 2077 horror stories I've heard involve an average of one to two hours between crashes, and those was before patches started coming.)

Great review. I unfortunately only played the first part of this game when I was little at a dentist’s office (remember when they’d have game consoles in the waiting rooms of dentists offices. That was a good time). Although I have watched a let’s play of it, and want too experience it as well. One of my friends has it so I could probably borrow it from him. Did you hear about how a Dinosaur Planet build was leaked recently? It looks really cool. It’s truly amazing what was changed, and what stayed the same. There’s this guy who’s making a reimagined version of Adventures where Krystal is an active part of the plot, and it’s more open. He’s retconning the bad stuff like Andross coming back too life (there’s a military alliance with Scales, and Andross’s reminants). Fox’s friends will also be more involved. Unfortunately we only have these two trailers (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHioeIObhMSFjpI

Luckily modders will be able to fix these issues. It’s amazing comparing that with what we got. A lot of the gameplay features, puzzles, and story beats (albeit simplified) stayed the same. While other stuff was either cut, or repurposed elsewhere. The story is definitely better, but that’s only because it feels like it’s own thing, and actually includes Sabre and Krystal.

Same. Also just to see what Rare would do if they stuck around with Nintendo.

No it’s not star Fox, but it’s a good game. Honestly I wish Nintendo would try new things to push the franchise forward, rather than trying to constantly remake star Fox 64

Can't tell if the joke at the end about the Holy Spirit was just off the cuff or if you're also a fellow Christian. If the latter, awesome! Either way, enjoyed the video. 💐

I was really looking forward to Dinosaur Planet when I read about it in Nintendo Power, then it was made as Star Fox Adventures I loved it when it first came out. Looking back on it, however, I can see its flaws more & after I learned what the original plans for the game was going to be like story & lore wise I am sorely disappointed, I wish they had just kept the original ideas (there was this complicated history about the Krazoa being at war with the dragons & Drakor was a god like being who could speak & reason instead of being a mindless beast). I really wish Rare had been allowed to keep it as a non-Star Fox game. It makes me upset with Microsoft for buying out Rare, first they cut this potentially great game short, then they ruined Banjo Kazooie. It would be nice in the future if Nintendo considers buying back Rare.

Microsoft buying Rare and then not utilizing them well hurts my soul. It wouldn't be as bad if Rare was still making a ton of great games for the Xbox, but there hasn't been much to talk about in the past 20 years.

@@thegirlwiththecontroller1164Not that you're wrong for the most part, but I feel like people tend to ignore Sea of Thieves when they say things like this. SoT is their latest game and happens to be their most successful game ever made and might just be the best game they've released under Microsoft (if not one of their best games ever). Yes, their first 15 or so years with Microsoft were rough with some bright spots, but right now they're probably in the best shape they've been in since the Nintendo years. Even if they don't release games as often anymore.

@@datruballin1780 When Sea of Thieves came out a lot of people thought it was pretty mediocre. Thankfully it's received a lot of support since launch and has become more successful and liked.

@@thegirlwiththecontroller1164 That's true. It was definitely panned at launch and as a Rare fan, that was sad to see. It's had a massive turnaround. Sorry, not trying to single you out or anything like that. It's just the way some people talk about Rare you'd think we were still in 2010 or something lol. Sea of Thieves isn't for everyone, but they've come a long way since then and some people don't seem to acknowledge that.
