In this video, we look at my everyday review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card in 2022 because this credit card is one of my favorites. The Sapphire Preferred has many great features and benefits related to Ultimate Rewards Points redemption for free travel, so I go over some of the Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits in this video. If you are asking, “Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred worth it?” then this video will be helpful in telling you why it is.
The Sapphire Preferred was the first premium travel credit card that I was approved for and I’ve had it for a few years. With the recent changes to this credit card, I still believe that it is one of the most valuable, thanks to the $50 hotel credit, the 1.25 CPP redemption option through the travel portal, and the ability to transfer points to transfer partners at a 1 to 1 ratio.
I also believe that if you are considering the CSP card, then you should also consider the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited in a Chase Trifecta setup to get even more valuable points from many welcome bonuses and categories. The Sapphire Preferred is a must have credit card in my opinion!

Hello, Daniel. Thank you for putting out the great content. I can only imagine the effort it takes to put together these videos that have helped me so much. I am rebuilding my credit and finally have a score in the 750+ range and just got the Sapphire Preferred card. Your videos are helping me strategize how to best use the rewards points I will be earning. "Better late than never" applies to me in my credit journey and your channel is helping me along that path to being more educated about how to use credit to my advantage rather instead of being on the opposite side of the credit spectrum. All the best to you and your family.

I have the CSP card and it is a beast with point redemption and flexibility. Only problem I have is its not a premium travel card at all. Like he said you don't get upgrades and you don't get the same concierge services that, let's say amex gives you, for traveling around the world. But some of the premium travel cards come with a higher fee to carry BUT you get top notch services. My recommendation, piggy backing off his awesome video, is if you plan on doing a lot world traveling you may want to seek a more premium card but if all you want to do is have a travel card for domestic vacations and holiday travel CSP is thè BEST card. The ultimate rewards portal is AMAZING and simple to use. (I actually wish AMEX would rip a page out of Chases ultimate REWARDS port design book because it is THAT great).

I’m in the same boat as you. I rarely use my CSP for swipes but the value of the 1.25 guaranteed value and the ability for that to be higher due to transfer partners are the reasons why I’m keeping this card in my wallet.

I have a question for you Daniel. Since the Sapphire preferred card and freedom unlimited card both have 3% for restaurants, wouldn’t it make more sense to use the Sapphire preferred card to eat out since it has the 10% anniversary bonus on the card which would effectively make it 3.1% total once it is all said and done? Great videos by the way 👍🏻👍🏻

Setting the amex gold aside for dining out. Given a Chase setup, I put all my dining out on my Sapphire Preferred. While it earns the same rate as the Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex. I also look at the newly added 10% anniversary bonus points for total purchases made the year before. That gets me even more points at year end that the other cards don't provide unless dining out became a quarterly category for the flex.
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Mark! Yeah the 10% anniversary bonus could get you a few extra points at the end of the year technically compared to the Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited. But I'm not a big fan of that feature personally though because when I read the fine print of that on Chase's website, their example says that $25,000 worth of spending on the Sapphire Preferred in one year will get you a 10% bonus of 2,500 points. And 2,500 points is only worth $25 at 1 cent per point for cash back. So really the 10% points bonus should read as a 0.1% bonus (100x less than Chase makes it sound like on their website). Its just a cheap marketing thing from Chase in my opinion because it would take a ton of spending on the Sapphire Preferred to get anything really material in return. I hope that makes sense the way I worded it haha but yeah, its never bad to get a few extra points but it just won't be anything too much at the end of the day!

Awesome Daniel! I cannot wait to round out my own Chase trifecta as well. 2 cents per point redemption if done correctly can effectively transfer from 9x on groceries this quarter with a new Freedom Flex to 18x! Even 3x effective from 1.5x from the Unlimited is clutch

just my opinion, but I'm really not impressed with chase cards on paper. The CSP to me only good for using points, not earning them. 3x on dining is good but I'd never use online grocery. So the anniversary bonus wouldn't be a perk if I don't use it that much. The freedom flex categories aren't as good discovers to me, and 3% at drugstores means nothing to me. So I just don't see myself racking up a lot of points with that duo. For the CSP the 25% points boost is nice, the only reason I want chase is because they southwest as a travel partner.

Can you do a video booking a Hyatt hotel thru travel portal at .25 redemption vs transfer partner vs direct/other third parties and the price comparisons
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Christine 👍 Yeah I could show another example like that with the Chase travel portal as well! Basically, the way current point redemptions with Hyatt are, the order of best value to worst value goes like this: UR Point transfer from Chase to Hyatt for booking hotel with Hyatt points > Booking the same hotel through the Chase portal at 1.25 cents per point with UR points on the CSP > Booking the same hotel through Hyatt's website with cash. Hope that helps!

I'd be interested in seeing you do some worked transfer examples for international flights when you know where you want to go and are looking for outsized value, since I'm trying to decide if travel cards are worth the effort for me and it seems like the process is pretty time-consuming. I'm currently team cash back and so travel a couple of times a year but am also kinda lazy and want to see if the work is worth it compared to just using a cash back travel setup like the USB Altitude Reserve or 3x travel using the BoA Customized Cash card.

Thanks for watching and commenting Gregory! Nothing wrong at all with Team Cash Back haha. I actually just got an idea from another comment to do a sort of "top point transfer deals" type of video to show some ways to get outsized value for things like international flights, first class, resort hotel stays, and things like that. Even if I don't necessarily book the trips that I show in a video like that, I think it could still be very useful to show how travel cards can really be worth a lot more than they're advertised for. Nice cards you've got regardless! Travel cards might work out well for you just depending on how you use them / how frequently you travel

$50 hotel credit (only via chase portal) is not very good IMO. yes, better than nothing but as you mentioned it's a third party booking so I miss our on points that go towards my status. I also have an issue with CSP's multipliers. It has 3x on dining, which is exactly same as Freedom Unlimited. Considering that FU is a no AF card, this is another blow to CSP. Overall, i don't know what Chase's strategy is around CSP. People who eat out a lot will/already use the Amex Gold. People who travel frequently have the CSR or the Amex Plat. People who value cash back, there are so many options out there (Citi double cash etc.) I guess this card is trying to catch the misfits who don't belong in any of those categories?
@Daniel_Braun

Yeah exactly, the $50 hotel credit is nice, but not perfect. And I agree, I don't know why the categories on the CSP overlap so much with the CFF and CFU now because what's the point. But I think the CSP really is just best as a point redemption card, but most people don't realize it!

I have a question with respect to transferring cases to travel partners: do you have to transfer them to see the value for a given transfer partner, or can you see the value in advance to compare to see what makes the most sense of you?
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! In most cases with many of these partners, you can just create a free account with a certain hotel chain or airline and then do a search on their website for a hotel stay or flight. If you check off the box in the search to "book with points" then it will show you how many points you will need so that you know before you actually transfer them!

Daniel, I'm also in the same spot as you, I barely use my CSP. It was my favorite card last month when I use the card to hit the minimum spend then afterward I started to use my CFU and CIC more. I haven't use the card for travel yet, hopefully over the summer. In the future, are you planning to upgrade to the CSR or get the Venture X?
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's how it seems to be for most people with all of these Chase cards as they look to maximize their value that they get! Lots of good ways to use the card for travel over the summer too! For now, I plan to stick with the CSP instead of the CSR because I really like my Amex Platinum card as my more "high-end" travel card and my CSP still provides a lot of value that's worth it at a much lower annual fee. I might look at getting the Venture X later in 2022, depending on what other cards I decide to get first. But maybe will even get the Venture X in 2023 - its a good card but I want to be able to justify the $10,000 of minimum spend required for the 100,000 point welcome bonus because I really don't spend much money normally

Another banger vid :) Hey so I’ve had this card a few years now, use it for all my dining and the tiny amount of travel these days. I’ve been wanting the AmEx Gold though and my plan this year I think is gonna be to grab that gold card for dining and travel instead then downgrade my CSP to a Chase Freedom Flex to replace my Capital One QS as a general cash back card. I also have the AmEx BCE which I’m trying to figure out where that fits in here too. It’s a no fee card so not a huge deal but hmm. Oh also glad you mentioned the Hyatt card! I kinda wanna grab that too as it’s my hotel chain of choice. I think the chase hyatt and flex cards and the Amex gold is a nice trio yea? Lol thoughts? :D
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, I appreciate it! Yeah the Amex Gold card will be a good replacement for dining, especially if you can get good value from the Uber and dining credits to effectively lower that annual fee. You definitely can downgrade the CSP to the CFF as well if you don't want to have a Chase setup anymore, but it all depends on what you're looking for. I like having both the Amex Gold and CSP just so that I have good redemption option for Chase and Amex points because I have a dual setup. But of course its different for everyone! BCE probably won't have as much use for you anymore if you do make these changes besides maybe gas but that ok! And yeah I totally agree, that Hyatt card is really great card and I'll probably get it this year too! I like that setup though of the Hyatt card, CFF and Amex Gold if you're trying to keep the number of cards to a minimum. Lots of value there! Hope that helps!

Is it worth getting it in my scenario. But if that is the case than what’s the point of me having the Chase Marriott Boundless. @Daniel_Braun

I still defer to using my Amex platinum for travel because with Amex I know that I’ll still get 1 CPP at a minimum for flights in their portal, or more if I transfer them. So 5x back is still 5% towards flights which beats my 2x back on travel through the CSP. But booking through the chase portal may be better at 5x back as long as prices are competitive. Sometimes changes in travel plans can be annoying if booked through a third party portal though

Still better to use your CSP for dining simply because of the anniversary bonus.
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
I guess technically it can be, but the anniversary bonus is mostly negligible. The way Chase words it on their website is that if you spent $25,000 on the card, that would equal a 10% point bonus or 2,500 points which is only worth $25 at a minimum. So a 0.1% return extra which isn't great but still slightly more

What’s the point of earning points on two platforms (Chase and amex) like you mention? Wouldn’t it be better to accumulate points in one system instead of spreading out points?
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
Good question and actually something that I'm going to make a video about soon! There's a few reasons. First, because of different benefits that some cards have over others (my Chase Sapphire Preferred has primary auto rental coverage, but my Amex Platinum has airport lounge access and I want both of those things). Second, the welcome bonuses are very good on all Chase and Amex cards, so I wanted to get them all to be able to redeem for free travel. And third, certain point system are lacking in certain categories (Chase doesn't have a card that earns well consistently for groceries, but the Amex Gold card is great for that by getting 4x back on groceries). Just a few reasons but I'll go over this a lot more in that future video! It definitely won't make sense for everyone to have a dual-point system setup like this because of the annual fees, but I like it personally and I get good value from everything so it works for me!

Yes, it counts as 2 separate hard inquiries. The 4 cards count no matter if they’re closed or not. However some cards don’t count towards 5/24. @@Daniel_Braun Very true. 60k points is nice and the 25% bonus when redeemed through the CUR is even nicer. Nonetheless I don't think I'd use it for every day swipes. Strictly for travel purchases or redemption. So being that I have the AMEX Gold and soon to be the CSP, what card would you recommend I get next? I'm thinking of a more every day card that can also rack up points that I can redeem through either reward programs but since I'll have one of each major card, I'm stuck between which route to go with (AMEX or Chase). I think I got lost in your explanation. How did you figure out it would be 45,000 UR points?
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun 2 жыл бұрын
So all I did was I searched for Hyatt properties on their website because I wanted to see what options they had for where I was traveling to. When I saw a hotel that I liked, I clicked on it and Hyatt actually has a points calendar that tell you how many points it costs to stay each night at their properties. So I saw that it only costs 15,000 points per night, so for 3 nights that's 45,000 points. Since the cost of booking the hotel with cash was very expensive, I knew that booking with Hyatt points was the best option. From there, I also knew that Hyatt is a travel partner with Chase where I can transfer Chase points at a 1:1 ratio into Hyatt points. So I did that and was able to book a great stay for only 45,000 of my Chase points. Also, Chase points only have a cash value of 1 cent per point if I wanted to cash them out into my bank account, so the 45,000 chase points had a cash value of $450 which was the amount that I used to compare to the cash value of booking through Hyatt with cash. That allowed to me easily see that the value of booking with Chase points transferred to Hyatt was going to be a much better deal than booking with cash through Hyatt. I hope that helps explain a little better! Thanks for the question and thanks for watching 👍
