I had a 2002 dark green p38 with dark green carpets and dark green threading on the seats. I miss Green Bean SO much and I'd do anything to drive it again. Such underrated but beautiful cars. Definitely in my top 3 and looking to buy another.

I recently bought that exact combination with a 4.6. In calling it the green machine. I’m tempted to put a putting green on the green carpet of the tailgate😂. I’m currently replacing brakes, pulleys, maf, trans flush/filter etc etc etc. Lots to update but I’m hoping to have years of enjoyment out of the old girl

They are becoming more and more rare but clean good examples are becoming very plentiful. Prices are still decent. I want one for nostalgia sake, but also they make a really good off road/overland vehicle. I’m looking to purchase one for cross country travel here in the states. This will be the vehicle I take on camping trips and to explore the country. I also have an early 90s accord coupe. I’m kinda building a dream garage of 90s yuppie vehicles. Wanting to also add an E36 convertible and Mercedes SL R129. I’d have my ideal 90s garage.

Took the plunge and bought a 2001 4.0 HSE on eBay sight unseen after watching this. Super comfortable for long journeys, easy to drive around town, carries heavy loads with ease, and is a fully functioning off-roader. Did a full service, changed out the rear discs and calipers and put a couple of thousand trouble free miles on touring around the UK. To do list when I purchased it included replacing a rear door handle, fixing the passenger door electric window, regassing the aircon, and fixing the headlining. All relatively easy fixes.
@ibradeybunch7 күн бұрын
Looking at buying one, has it been reliable during your ownership?
@neiljohnson60516 күн бұрын
@@ibradeybunch Update to the above. We drove from Wiltshire to Tuscany via France and back via Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium a couple of years ago. All went very smoothly. Aircon had never worked as far as we knew so it was pretty hot but manageable with the windows down. Got a few jobs to do - aircon obviously - headlining being the main one, HVAC indicator LCD panel needs replacing too. We then did Wilts to Edinburgh and back via London with no issues during mid-winter. Ours is 2001 so has the BMW Bosch Motronic EMS from the 7s series, which is apparently more reliable than the previous Lucas one. Would love to have it with me here in Singapore.... 😞 Fired up first time on a recent visit despite not having been touched for 18 months (battery disconnected). .

Very pretty P38! I must say that I like the color combination very much. I have bought a project P38, here in Norway. 96 model, 2.5 D manual transmission! And it has probably accumulated most of the flaws and shortcomings ... I think a previous owner has had more than enough of the air suspension ... Everything seems to have been torn out and thrown away! Now goes on normal springs!

I just bought a 98 4.0 SE and absolutely love it. It's like a light blue, almost cyan colour with original bull bar. One owner from new also. However air suspension has been taken out and replaced with new coils and shock absorbers. Would have loved the novelty of the air suspension but I guess one less thing to break! Great video and even better car. Greetings from an irish man in Western Australia

A tuned diesel is better than the 4.0 and is very reliable as long as long as you keep the cooling system in top condition. I personally run an all aluminium v8 rad on mine as the diesel rad is quite inefficient having both inlet and outlet at the top seperated by a small plastic fin to try and guide the coolant around the rad. The v8 rad has them on opposite corners. Simply plum the lower hose back to the top where it os on the diesel engine.

One of my most memorable cars, never driven one before i test drove a 2002 model 4.6 HSE, that was back in 2004 still under warranty with 19k km on the clock it was literally brand new, when i jumped in the driver seat and moved the ship forward i could hear Jean Sibelius: Finlandia , I stopped and told the salesman lets do the paperwork. never felt anything like that again. however the reliability over the course of next 25k km was just too much to handle. and the warranty was over so i had to let it go for 9k GBP back in 2007. I do miss it though.

I love the air suspension, but my car was lopsided. They said "airbags need new, pump need new, new height sensors needed" I Solved by spending $0 using EAS suite on a Laptop. Cut 16 small steel pipes to 3 specific lengths for the 3 heights and placed inside bump stops with suspension raised. Drop car down and it'l sit on the pipes. Then EAS gave me readouts of current height. I replaced the height readouts with the new findings. Repeated for all 3 heights. Car now sits level and at the heights I set. So I replaced nothing!

Great video. I agree about range rovers losing something after they stopped making p38s. In fact when it came time to upgrade my old high mileage 97 DSE auto I tested range rover sport, l322 and even discovery 3s ( I considered these to be logical upgrades) I was disappointed in all of them. I then decided to buy a better newer p38 instead. Much nicer to drive and the driving position is much better. I ended up with a 2000 DSE auto full service history and 110k miles for £1600. They are underpowered that is true .

My Instagram is ordinaryaverageguygarage and you can see pics of it there. I changed 3 spark plug wires, changed the oil, put in a new heated windshield, and detailed it inside and out. I’m totally in love with it. The sprag clutch has failed in the transmission, but you start out in 1st and manually shift to D and it drives great. That’s next on the list.
