@snowmean12 жыл бұрын
For me the biggest issue of the Preppy is that if you decide to refill it from the ink bottle you might get into big mess due to nib sits slightly deeper than grip skirt surrounding it. Usually it can hold a lot of ink which might suddenly drop, so the only viable option to refill the pen is refilling cartridge using syringe, or converter directly from the bottle before installation. Alternatively you can leave some space in convertor so after you remove nib from the bottle, you could suck in the excess of the ink. That's not very intuitive.

Platinum's coming out with the Prefounte, which is the Preppy section and nib, but with a more formal/professional body.
@sandytooks8 ай бұрын
For a few dollars more I love my Prefounte.That being said, I got my Prefounte in "05" (med) but decided that I would have rather had an "03" (fine.) Bought a Preppy fine and swapped the nib sections, easiest nib swap ever. Now I have a Prefounte fine and a Preppy medium, for when I need a medium pen. Haven't used the Preppy, yet, but I already know it will write just fine because it has the nib I had already been using.

if you don't like the writing on the Preppy you can get one of those nail polishing things with one side being a (fine)file and the other side being a polishing pad
@beaconoflight3225 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if they have improved the design or resin used but I use preppy's and prefounte at work every day as a nurse and have had no cracking issues. My kids have a bunch of preppy's and they are fine also, no issues even with significant child abuse... haha

why would it last a year? I anticipate it will keep functioning as long as it is not dropped & taken good care of.

Sorry if im late but he means the ink. The platinum slip and seal mechanism can prevent ink from drying up for a year or two.

If you don't use the pen for 1 year or even more the ink won't dry and it will immediately write thanks to the slip and seal cap

Hey Sal, thanks for your videos. You did say that this pen should last at least a year if taken care of well. I was looking forward to getting the Jinhao X450. You may have heard of it and you seem to have pens similar to it, but based on your knowledge how long would the Jinhao X450 last? I've never had a fountain pen break or stop working. I've only had the Pilot Metropolitan for 2 years, my only fountain pen.

Well this review is almost a year old, but I thought the Preppy was the worst pen I owned...threw it away. My favorite cheap pen is the Wing Sung 3013 vacuum pen. But I love my Platinum PTL 5000.
@Robutube14 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you were unlucky? At $3 a go they must make millions of these so the odd rogue one will make it through. My own, bought about six months ago is currently my favourite daily pen (it has usurped my Waterman). They generally get very good reviews.

I had one and I liked it a lot. So I bought the pack with several colors and the nibs were inconsistent, some were good, some were great and two didn’t work at all, quite disappointed, really.

I've had three new-generation Preppys and I've had one body crack, but all the caps cracked within a couple months. I don't think I was capping them with Hulk-like strength or anything. I did use them for tons of quick notes and probably capped and uncapped them a LOT versus other users. I've found these white limited edition preppys that seem to be made of another kind of plastic, and I'm tempted to order them, although they only come in fine. Maybe I can use a white cap on the limited edition Preppy I have where the body is still good. The body has white cloud design on blue so it might look ok. Or, I can replace the nibs with a medium from another preppy, but as you say, that is getting expensive for a cheap pen. I'm actually confused about why Platinum and other companies don't seem to sell extra nibs for fountain pens should yours get damaged and need replacement. In the artist dip pens, the whole thing is switching out the nibs.
@jennw68092 жыл бұрын
Follow up: The white Preppys are probably made from the same plastic. And I think maybe my issue about the caps cracking is from *posting* the cap. The white cap doesn't look great on my cloud pen. The all-white ones do look sharp though!
@shadow2010shadow20105 жыл бұрын
These pens are cheap and the nib is quite good but the plastic barrel and cap are too flimsy prone to crack you can still use by putting tape around but obviously spoils the appearance of the pen and do you really want to be using a Fountain Pen that is all taped up
@methamphetamememcmeth34224 жыл бұрын
It would be great to have a clear resin body.
@ameliabuns40582 жыл бұрын
for me, the feed keeps makes the pen very dry. the nib writes wet enough at first for a few sentences, then turns dry and scratchy a bit. (washed it with soapy water first, Lamy turquoise in it, 0.3mm) the terrible feed design of this pen holds it back by so much. I put the nib + long stick of a feed into a custom 3dprinted body with a different air channel and ink buffer and it wrote 1000x better.
@ameliabuns40582 жыл бұрын
I've never tried an expensive nib before, I wonder if they're really even different. only had safari (lamy) before. and tbh i do dislike their nibs. but yeah

Can you replace the nib?
@snowmean12 жыл бұрын
yes, you can extract the whole section with the nib and long pole out of it, and they are interchangeable between Preppy, Plasir and Preforte, but I think that's a bit overkill for a $5 pen.

Which converter fits correctly to preppy? Nd where can i find it.
@furongguo80974 жыл бұрын
Difficult to tell exactly but I found one of the cheap converters with a black ring round the vent from China will fit; just dig out the black plastic ring insert and it should fit snugly to your Preppy.
IMHO the preppy is good for beginners because it's relatively cheap but I wouldn't say it's a great pen by any means
@snowmean12 жыл бұрын
There are no other pens in this price category which will outperform Preppy including gel pens, so Preppy is a great pen for its budget no doubts.

I have one big question over this pen. Most fountain pens need cleaning and regular use to keep from drying out. So how does the refills work on this pen? If it isn’t used a lot does it dry up easy and how do you clean it?
@DrowningInTea2 жыл бұрын
It has the Platinum signature Slip & Seal feature which means even if you don't use it for over a year the ink still won't dry out! You can use cartridges and refill using the cartridge, or convert the pen into an eyedropper
