Lately, we've only really gotten to see Spider-Man in a high school setting and I think this is pretty limiting.

Peter was done so well in PS4. He's broke and homeless, he's got his job assisting Octavius, and his relationship with MJ was that of a mature, separated couple trying to patch things up. A conversation with Peter has with MJ really stuck with me. They talk about how when they were high school kids, Peter, MJ, and Harry spent an entire day lost in New York trying to get to Coney Island. With all the responsibilities they have now, they don't get to have carefree adventures like that anymore. But Peter takes comfort in the fact that his efforts as Spider-Man keep the city safe and allow other carefree teens to have their own adventures. It a very small moment in an action packed game but it perfectly encapsulates who Peter Parker is.

I’m a little surprised Drake didn’t mention the 90’s animated show. That was how I was first introduced to Spider-Man, and many others, and it took place during his college years. It fits what he’s talking in this video so well, Peter and MJ get married in it for one example.

In the comics, Peter is by now in his early thirties, possibly late twenties. His high school days are a distant memory. The closest we get nowadays is him in higher education. It would be a smart idea to start having media outside of comics reflect this status quo. That way, you start drawing in new readers without confusing them as to why Peter is suddenly a grown adult. If you want high school drama, that's Miles' department now.

There's this obsession in the editorial of always keeping characters the way they're perceived by the general public. But the WAY you get to update that perception is making a change and sticking to it. Worked with Harley Quinn. She's arguably as or better know for her post-Joker self than her classic self.

It also sort of bothers me that most High School Spidey adaptions skip out on Ditko era Peter’s personality entirely. Almost all of them pull Peter’s demeanor from either early USM, the Raimi movies, or late 616. Even Spectacular Spider-Man despite its HUGE influence of the Ditko and Romita years, mixed many various personalities together from previous Spidey media into a melting pot of sorts for him (albiet it’s way more balanced than most, so it works). Personally, I loved Ditko era Peter so much, and it’s a shame we don’t see it often. The closest I’ve seen him be adapted is surprisingly Spider-Man TNAS, which is odd since that show took place in college and loosely followed the first Raimi movie.

I think at this point in Spider-Man's long run, there's a list of adjectives that define the character, and that's what creators try to inject into their stories (when they're successful) to get the right mix for fans and casual audiences alike, just like they have done for Batman. All I really ask for with interpretations is that Peter is a good hearted kid who always does the best he can even when the universe punishes him for it, and stands up for his principles. Other elements can be interchanged or warped in degree from there, but that core has to be present otherwise he isn't that character to me.

I don’t agree that the high school element to Peter is “crucial to who he is”. Just look at Spider-Man PS4. The only mentions to high school in that are through optional collectable items. The story never once mentions high school, unless it’s a joke. We still understand who he is without him being a dorky high school kid. Sadly, that’s really the only example because most media portray him as still in school. I do agree with the actual point of the video. Peter’s nearing thirty in the comics and for the past almost twenty years, we’ve been getting essentially the exact same stories, just with a different coat of paint.

I've seen a lot of people hand out this take that they're tired of high school Spider-Man and will I understand and respect it, I'm alright with high school Spider-Man. I'm a high schooler right now, and growing up with Spider-Man, one of the reasons he was my favorite character was that he was a kid, like me. I understood and emphasized with a lot of his struggles, balancing the multiple components in his life, being bullied and picked on. I think that older fans want the character to grow up with them and keep that sense that the character is them, and I think that Spider-Man should be able to grow up. Stories of him as an adult and in college are also amazing. But I've always been partial to story of a boy who had to become a man and grow and evolve throughout the years, which is why high school Spider-Man is probably my favorite version of the character.

He deals with family drama (he has a mentally ill mother and a brother with an addiction), romantic drama (he's engaged to his brother's ex in issue 1), work drama (his boss drugs him), all on top of being a vigilante in a very corporate future America. He's like in his mid-20s and is introduced as more-or-less having life figured out until it starts going off the rails and he gets his powers. As someone that grew up with Spider-man in the 90's, it's been pretty frustrating for some time now, to always see Spider-man portrayed as the bumbling kid he was in his earliest days. not only is it overstating his HS days (as you mentioned) but it also keeps people from seeing the most well known version of Peter from the comics: The really competent hero that just always have to much going on. I'd also make a case for daring to adapt more 90's Spiderstuff in general. It wasn't all Clone saga, people, and that didn't suck nearly as much as OMD, which we're still seeing material being adapted from.

MCU Peter Parker pretty much is comics Miles Morales. He even has Ned as his best friend instead of Harry even though Ned is literally a clone of Ganke (Miles’ friend in the comics). But if you think about it, making MCU Peter to be like Miles in the comics was probably the best thing to ever happen to Miles. Because his character was never that interesting back then when Brian Michael Bendis wrote for him. If it wasn’t a good character arc for Miles then it should never work for Peter, and we can already see with MCU Spider-Man, it’s not for a lot of people. So if it wasn’t for MCU Peter then we would’ve never gotten Spider-Verse Miles and finally seen his character redeemed and loved by many people instead of being forgotten and left behind in the comics.

What exactly do you mean with "lately we have only seen SM in a high-school setting"? Outside of the MCU and current animated show Peter is an adult, or at least in college, in all of the 616 comics, the video game and in every other movie. I think this video would have been a lot stronger if you had taken a bit of time to explain your exasperation with teenage Peter Parker before launching into your arguments, because currently, I don't really see your point.

I wish I could agree with you, but adult peter pisses me off sometimes. He’s a self sabotaging character that practically never has his shit together. Every time he’s has something good going for him he screws it up. In the comics right now he’s can’t even make his own rent. In a previous issue it was explained that the only reason he’s afloat is because of MJ’s severance package from Stark Industries. Like Come On you cant even hold down rent and you live with 2 other roommates!!! He better not even think of marriage until his bank account and credit is stable. I mean like how many of his friends own companies? Can’t he ask any of them to network him into a job. I know he wants to make it on his own but their comes a point when pride gets in the way of success. Pretty sure Liz could get him a job at Alchemax.

This is a brilliant video. I completely agree. I think it's reductive to prevent Peter's development, moreso when it also involves making him less competent and needing other heroes. Plenty of media shows Peter outside of high school. The 90s show, the PS4 game, Spider-Man 2 and 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and honestly the first TASM and OG Spider-Man hardly spent much time with him in school. The Ultimate Spider-Man TV show also hardly kept him in school. I think it’s fine to have some media keep him in school as it differentiates him from other heroes. We’ve seen plenty of adult superhero’s in the MCU, so it only makes sense to put Peter in school to keep things different

I've been saying this same thing for years! When Kevin (Marvel's president) said a few years ago that the new spidey would be in high school, with the justification that Spider-man's best stories are from HS, I nearly gave up on ever seeing a good mature spidey story on the big screen again. I actually made up a name for Marvel wanting to keep spidey young, single, or living with Aunt May, I call it the Peter Pan Effect. Which is the general idea that a company, not just Marvel, tries to make a beloved character with a lot of history, young or inexperienced again, not necessarily going back to the status quo, but as though they want to revisit the genius of the character again, never allowing them to really grow beyond that initial "cool factor" or the thing that originally brought us to the characters. This effect isn't unique to just spidey though, we also see it with Batman, James Bond, Superman, and so on.

One of my favorite runs on Spider-Man in the comics was the JMS run and John Romira Jr run. I love how Peter took up the mantle of becoming a high school teacher at his old high school. I thought it was great to see Peter Parker look at the community and see the struggles that these kids went through and how even as Peter Parker he was trying to help and get involved. There was a lot of great stories that came from the run. Also the OG Stan and Romita run is also great too. But I still have a soft spot for HS spidey ESPECIALLY spectacular spider-man, such a shame it can’t be done properly in the live action films although I do like Tom. At least we have spider verse.

High school peter is interesting when he has to deal with the obstacles that come with being a teenage Spider-Man i.e. less resources, money problems, sneaking around Aunt May, how his superheroing conflicts with his school life so basically spectacular spiderman and Ultimate. An example from ultimate is one time Peter got shot in the shoulder. At the time, the cops were hunting him so he couldn't stick around the hospital and has deal with hiding that kind of injury at home with aunt May and all day at school. Honestly I'm disappointed that MCU spiderman just doesn't have to deal with most of those problems

I couldn't agree more, Drake. My favorite Spidey comic-book stories were with him as an "miserable" adult, but as a more competent and confident superhero (and I've read those while I was _still_ in high school). Struggling to pay the bills and having other adult problems that felt more grounded and real-life than the stereotypical high school "drama" the recent movies and other medias have been showing. It is what you said about him always trying to balance his personal life and superhero life; it is this dynamic that always made the character interesting. I really hope the MCU explores that post-high school Spiderman in future movies. Edit: The ending to _No Way Home_ kinda implies we'll have "miserable Peter" in future MCU, so that's a huge plus.

The interesting thing about the PS4 game (that I believe was mentioned in interviews at the time) is that making Peter an adult was practical from a gameplay perspective as well as a story one. After all, playing a Spiderman who is way more familiar with his powers is way more interesting to play as than one who is just starting out. It's funny I am far more excited to see what comes out of the games than the movies moving forward. (Well for Spiderman that at least. Marvel games in general aren't inspiring confidence)

More of that kind of Spider-Man in the movies would be amazing, but maybe it's also because I'm old he was a relatable character and inspirational when I was a kid/teen so maybe having him be an adult would keep him being relatable and that's why it would be more intriguing to see?
