The funniest thing about Ultimate Spider-man is that it was the project that started the Marvel-Disney animated universe, but the last few seasons of the other shows take place in the Marvel's Spider-man animated universe. It's like a stab in the back for Ultimate.

The thing I find the weirdest is that Fury said he wanted him to teach the group, but aside from a few very short training montages, Peter never seems to take the role of a mentor. Yes, he helps the team in their individual episodes, but it seems more like a friend than a mentor. Not to mention, it's clear they are all in the age gap, so it's harder to see them as a teacher-student. It would have been better if this was an adult Spiderman, but it would have been weird if Spidey was the oldest of the entire group. It also doesn't explain how he is the most experienced of the group. Yeah, he has actual experience in combat, but Nova was tried by the Guardians of the Galaxy, Danny was tried to be the Iron Fist, Tigress comes from a lineage of heroes so I believe she had some training. The only one Peter could actually teach is Luke, but their fighting styles are so different, Luke would learn better from heavy hitters like Hulk or the Thing, not someone as acrobatic as Spider Man.

Not true though Spider-Man actually did defeat a lot of his classic villains on his own without his team. I mean take the season 2 finale Ultimate, spider-man single-handedly, defeated goblin, save the city and rescue his team all by himself. Also in the season four finale, he defeated Doc Oak and his partners by himself, while the other heroes were trapped. So you really can’t say he didn’t. Defeat is classic villains on his own when he actually did. Also, I forgot to mention in the season one finale when goblin took over the Hella carrier, and it exploded. Spider-Man single-handedly, rescued everyone inside and took on the goblin in symbiote while he was at it.

The show was more concerned with making Spidey have crossovers with other heroes than it was with developing Spidey himself, which ultimately ended up being to its detriment. On one hand, as you mentioned, those crossovers were great and felt like they were ripped straight from the comics. On the other hand, all those episodes meant there was very little room for Spidey and friends to have any sort of connected story, making it feel more like a Power Rangers show than one with an overarching plot.

He’s a dude who just got a good roll of luck, got high on power, and immediately used his powers for selfish gain. His goals change because he wants to achieve something now that he powers, since he got bored quick of doing whatever. I know it's obvious, but Spectacular has the best Electro and I'd love to see someone take that setup and run with it. Really lean into the body horror of a guy getting super powers; a guy who is initially terrified of no longer being human, but eventually grows to love and embrace it. Have him reject his humanity and keep chasing the high of gaining more and more power with the end goal of him just becoming pure energy. And every time he shows up, he's less stable, needing more and more tech to even maintain a physical form. What you said about Peter's "Friendship" with the others is my biggest issue with this show. I hate Nova with a burning passion, he tries to be the jokey character of the show, but A. With a character like Spiderman thats kind of a struggle and B. Their attempt to make Sam "likable" is just by saying he has a lot of responsibility without doing anything interesting with him being the owner of the Nova helmet. Iron Fist and Luke's relationship is also non-existent, non of them have that unless Peter is there. For a "team" to work they have to work with everybody, not just one person. Now yes Spidey is the main character and one of if not arguably the most popular superheroes. But in a show that doesn't just focuses on him, you need more than that to grip the audience. And this is nowhere near as good as Spiderman could or should be. Here's how I'd fix just the core 5, have Peter use the lesson of responsibility Ben taught him to be a better leader. Have Danny and Luke actually be best friends, with Luke being the first person to gain a liking to Peter, and Danny being the calm strategist who helps keep everyone focused. Make White Tiger the lone wolf of the team, then make her realise that she has to be more open and maybe have Nova be the one who helps her through that, additionally this would help develop Sam, by making him take the situations they're in more seriously rather than constantly being a jokey asshole who likes to screw Peter over. These wouldn't be game changing, but it actually lead to them feeling like a team and a family, rather than some rando being forced to work with 4 of his bullies.
@treadingwater862 жыл бұрын
In addition to everything you mentioned, I would also like to add that there was an interesting conflict for Sam that could have made his abrasiveness a bit more understandable: the idea that he felt that Peter stole the leadership position from him and that he is just trying to get back what he feels that he is owed by proving that he is better than him, even if it is in a juventile way. This is something established in his very introduction in Episode 2 yet goes pretty much nowhere and while it can't justify his actions, it does give him a motivation that could then have served as the backbone for future character-development. In fact, that is something that all the characters would have really needed from the get-go in hindsight as it would have given them a real personality beyond just the tropes and a way for the audience to understand their actions early. Ava could have been the lone wolf who is driven to become strong so that she will never have to lose anyone ever again like she lost her father and Danny could have been looking for more information about his family who he lost on the journey to find K'un L'un (the lack of real motivation really hurts his character in 'Journey of the Iron Fist' by the way, it kind of accidentally makes Scorpion's claims feel really valid) with him bonding with Luke over similar experiences who wants to find his missing parents.
@krnatsu2 жыл бұрын
@@treadingwater86 it's a typical case of how you need to show not tell. This is something my film lecturer always mentions, you have to show you're characters as being good friends, you have to show why they act the way they do. If you just tell us, no ones going to care, what's worse is this was probably a fair few people's introduction to these characters, besides maybe Luke and Danny, but even then they have to make a good impression not be stereotypes of typical teenagers. You could literally just say Luke is the strong one, Ava is the girl, Danny is the zen guy and Sam is the jokster. What's worse about Sam is that the idea probably was for him to be unlikeable initially, the issue is that we don't just dislike Sam for his actions, but we dislike how poorly he's written. He doesn’t grow or change besides appearance and even then its just an inverted colour scheme, there's no reason for him to be the way he is. And Sam doesn't need to be 100% original he just has to be a person, not the shadow of the character he's trying to be

My issue with the show is that everybody Peter teams up with whether it be the core or other superheroes has the tendency to be total pricks to him all the time. The premise was solid. The idea of an already experienced Spidey who has been a hero for years catching SHIELD's attention and putting Peter in a similar position to the Avengers in the MCU (before Winter Soldier) was interesting, and it gave an excuse to have him take on villains he wouldn't otherwise (Doom, Loki, etc.), while still having him fight smaller threats on a regular basis. Doc Ock's design is horrifyingly great (and perfectly fits the way his character acts here), and most of the other designs are pretty good. Plus having a bunch of different marvel characters outside of the ones Spidey usually interacts with was cool (and pulling from different parts of the Marvel universe is one of the things that made EMH so good). The only problem is that everything else ranges from just alright to plain bad. As for the actors that were in I'm in the Band, they were the least entertaining of the main cast. None of the jokes in that show were well written, but the other 3 main leads made them funny with their hammy delivery. But instead we got the 2/5ths that weren't good Also the scene where Knightmare makes Peter experience Uncle Ben's death again was fantastic and in a shorter series (like 12 episodes) that scene alone could have outweighed all its flaws

If there's one thing I hate most about this show, it's how they just take away what makes Spiderman, Spiderman. His struggles. He doesn't have to worry about his secret identity, he doesn't have to worry about his family being harmed, he doesn't have to worry about anything because they immediately placed him in Shield. Of course, there's other times where Spidey or even other Spidermen has been put in a big team, but those still kept his struggles, in fact they added more at times. Ex, Avengers. They did perfect with the struggles part, and then added another struggle with the whole team considering him too young and inexperienced to do anything useful, which is a bit of bullying but also reasonable, unlike the team of people he leads in this show, which just bully him for no absolute reason.
@yourweirdplant Жыл бұрын
If there's one villain change I did like, it would have to be Scorpion. Not only for the probably obvious Mortal Kombat reference with the Scorpion name and the chain with kunai, but because it would actually probably be a very interesting villain if made new. A Spidey Villain that's on par with Spidey's speed and fighting style would make an interesting fight if they ever decide to actually write him well.

I thought that perhaps combining the characters of Spectacular's Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson could be a way to condense the character of Agent Venom. Have him lose his legs in a Spidey related accident and have his adoration of Spidey go the other way into absolute hatred for failing him. Then he becomes an Anti-Hero out of spite until he's humbled and grows as a character throughout the show, it's an idea I had running on my mind for a while. As for his relationship with Peter before he became bonded to Venom, I imagine he was friends with him to help with his homework, and temporarily escape from his abusive father by hanging out with him. Also I just realized that Shattered Dimensions was the closest we got to a crossover between Spectacular Spidey and HvW Deadpool.
@oldmanlogan96162 жыл бұрын
Thats actually a great idea, excpet for the relationship to Peter, just let them have the same relationship that they have in Spectacular: former best friends turned into rivals, nerd vs jock dynamic
@Mr.Maguro2 жыл бұрын
@@oldmanlogan9616 That is their relationship in the present. I was refering to before that, when they were kids. For context: In the comics, Flash Thompson grew up with an abusive father, and he envied Peter because his uncles gave him a seemingly perfect childhood, and so Flash bullied Peter out of spite. In my version, he befriended Peter and started hangeding out with him to escape that. It something that unfortunately happens very often in real life, and I think it would be interesting to tackle that.

As someone who grew up learning and loving about Spider-Man from the 90's show, and not watching any other Spider-Man series, going into Ultimate was different in a refreshing sort of way. I learned more about Spider-Man more from the movies and video games, that they were all pretty closely connected. Ultimate changing it up with Harry being Venom, Flash becoming Agent Venom, Norman being a powerhouse Goblin, and expanding on a lot more super heroes made it entertaining to me. I took a lot of getting used to the 4th wall breaks in the show because it was something that felt so much more Deadpool to me that it was jarring, but eventually got used to it. Definitely not a bad show, entertaining at times and fun to watch, but can't say it's a recommended Spider-Man show to pick to someone who's never watched Spider-Man before when you have the other Spider-Man cartoon series to pick from.

Ultimate Spider-Man was the show that introduced me to Spider-Man. I kinda agree with you that this show might not be the best for people who are new to Spider-Man because it can give someone the wrong impression of who Spider-Man is. I really like Ultimate Spider-Man's version of Spider-Man, but unfortunately, it's not the canon version, so I sometimes have a hard time reading the comics cause I don't like the comics' version of him as much. I just find, whining "I don't like being Spider-Man" Parker to be so annoying. That being said though, I do think the show did a good job at explaining a lot of the characters for newcomers, even if they weren't very accurate.

Sure it can be a bit much at times, but I honestly love how silly this show is able to be and felt like it really put you inside Spider-Man's head. I believe the DP episode shows it the most: while previous show had some light 4th wall breaking, this serie has peter going full deadpool, and that undercut every single episode there's also the problem with the "ultimate" branding, the idea to do the classic work with a new twist, rather than go more in either direction. a bit more work would have done for a lot more mileage, and some other dubs actually manage to push a bit more soul in it, but there are a bit too many corners cut off here

There’s a good chance that Sam was made for the show but debuted in the comics before the show aired, like Kaldur from Young Justice. I say this because Sam’s first appearance was in late 2011 and the show debuted early 2012, plus Sam used Richard Rider’s design in the show until he was given the black helmet from the comics later. Meaning the comic writers saw this characterization and actively rejected it when they added him to the comics. Good on them.
