Is the Netflix era of digital comics finally here? Captain Logan discusses why he's finally dropping his pulls in favor of digital subscription services, and reviews four digital comics services, describing their offerings, features, cost, and drawbacks as of April 2019, and how to access as close to every comic ever published as possible, for less than $30 a month.

I have been saying this for years. Digital is the way to go in order for comics to survive. It's just way too damn expensive for me to spend almost $50 dollars worth of comics at my LCS every week. So what if I have to wait 6 months or a year to read the newest comics? Big whoop. The streaming services offer me years upon decades worth of stories and back issues I can read to fill in the time. Trust me, I want to support my LCS, but it's just too much on my wallet.

Very few modern comics are "scans", the vast majority of them are rendered digitally to begin with. The visual fidelity of digital comics vs print isn't even close, digital dominates hands down. The way today's modern high gloss paper takes ink is much better than than the old 3 color process, but it's still not as vivid and dynamic as digital. I don't need a light source, I don't worry about glare on the page, I certainly don't worry storing and preserving my comics. And as far as ownership is concerned, well since I read mostly image books I own every digital comic I buy. I can download from image directly any time as a drm-free file that I can store, upload to cloud storage, burn to disc ... basically whatever I want. I can even use my local shop'sv retailer code so that they get a kickback on everything I buy. Digital is the shit.

It’s weird to say, but I LOVE reading comics on the TV. I’ve been reading Alex Ross’ Justice off the DC Universe App on my TV and it feels way more epic than looking at your phone or computer screen. It is glitchier than those other two options, but when it works it WORKS. I’ve had the DC Universe since day 1, and it was great catching up on Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, and Static Shock (shows I loved as a child, but never finished) but like you, Cap, I was a little disappointed by the app overall. Now, with all the comics available, I LOVE the DC Universe app and have been using it almost everyday this last month. Hoopla is also fantastic, and after you talked about the Marvel app, I’m sold on giving that a go as well!

It's more convenient indeed to go digital... I love reading comics more then just collecting Im not a hardcore collector but I am a reading comics fan and digital is the way to go... I personally don't have space to collect books on top of that when moving out it's a pain in the ass to carry all that crap... So indeed it's awesome the digital age and even though we love our old ways of phisical mediawe need to face the fact that digital is the future and forever...

I’ll dabble with digital just to try something, but if I really like it or it’s held as a staple of quality for the industry that would add to my shelf I’ll buy it physically. But yes, your completely right about digital streaming being a great service for the price.

A busted water pipe took care of my paper comic collection. I moved over to digital comics that I read on a Microsoft Surface. The Surface's 12" screen and 4:3 screen ratio are just about identical to the size of a paper comic. I buy my comics from ComiXology and use a Chrome plug-in to download .cbz files.

Here's how I do it. I read it digitally on sale or from unlimited. I then I buy the trade for 9/10 or 10/10 ones. I found Hellboy, Batman 52 ,East of West and Y the Last Men from unlimited. I will probably buy and started buying my favourite things.

I’ve always been a digital reader. Personally, i buy each one, just as it comes on sale. Often times they’ll have 83% off sales of major trades, and that’s where I come in. Subscription services just wouldn’t do me much good, as there for a few months at the beginning of the year, i read a lot of comics, and for the past two months, I’ve read zero. I’m very all or nothing when it comes to the media I’m enjoying. But the free one via library card seems like a very possible solution, and not one I’d heard of before. Thanks a bunch. :)

Fantastic video! I myself have used Marvel Unlimted for a year and was really impressed by it. I had to stop because of financial reasons but it was still a good service. And even then, I like how with Marvel, if you buy the physical version, you get the digital, no matter the issue. DC only does it for its first issue of a new series. No matter what, it seems the industry is embracing digital which is good.

Grew up with comics on printed paper and never thought I would jump ship from that but the easy and convenient way to download them can't be ignored..why get up and get dressed and run out to the comic book store and by the time i get home, my friends are halfway done reading there stacks for that week...the piece of mind of cloud storage( put mine on more than one just in case) is huge, no fear of lost or destroyed paper or keeping up with where it is.

The main way I read physical comics anymore is checking out graphic novels from my library which I do by putting them on hold via the website. When they're ready to be picked up, I retrieve them from the closest library. I'm currently reading the Epic Collection of Master of Kung Fu that way. Given that I'm still a believer in the library system (another fading giant), Hoopla is also something that I like to use.

Something I wanted to point out is that if you have the luxury of purchasing a tablet with a larger screen, it is in some instances possible to read the comics in a large size than print may allow depending on the comic. The 12.9 inch iPad Pro tends to be bigger than the average print size for a standard-issue single which may make it easier to enjoy the finder details or be able to zoom in on the artwork.

Why can't comixology and other service support chromecast. I had to cast it from chrome OS via my laptop, but it would be nice if comixology support it directly like Netflix does.

I know I’m late to this but digital anything is a bad deal. You only have access to your purchase as long as the service you are using doesn’t lose the license. Say you buy a comic on comixology you own it as long as the publisher doesn’t pull the license. If they do then you lose the ability to read the comic you purchased.

Great video. I am buying printed comics too but the best digital comics I've ever read are Madefire's Motion Books. Those are basically digital comics but they add simple animation. ambient sounds and sound effects. After reading a few of them I started creating my own cause they offer a free platform for indie creators. so you are getting great books that you can't get somewhere else. They add the whole cinematic aspect (animation and sound) so you get more than just a pdf file.

This is all great if these services were offered outside of the US. Not living in the US is already a pain when it comes to comics because there are only about 5 shops in the whole country and only marvel unlimited is available in NZ and I would much more prefer DC. If these services opened up here, where physical single prices are huge (my closest comic shop charges $15-25) they would probably do quite well.

You got one thing wrong, as far as I know, for example the app lets me read all the iron man comics where iron man has appeared. It goes in order and jumps to an avengers comic and back the main iron man series. So it is possible to read everything in order and you don’t have to know the reading order, it gives it to you already. I was curious about it myself and stumbled upon it

I have a iPad Pro and it’s the perfect size for reading digital comics. It’s like reading an omnibus sized comic, except you’re reading it digitally and it’s just more convenient for on the go or laying around the house. I Just don’t that I’ll ever go back yo Physical, unless it’s a book or series that I “really” want to add to my bookshelf for collection purposes only.

I can't do digital comics. I tried with the infinity gauntlet once and the experience was very poor. I had to keep zooming in just to be able to see the text and it was just very clunky overall. Holding a comic physically is much more satisfying and feels more special than holding a tablet. Flipping through pages feels a lot better than swiping a screen. You can hold all comics on one device which is a huge advantage and you can read in the dark but comics don't need battery power. It is true that the subscription works out cheaper but if you just want one specific comic to keep forever, physical is better value for money because you are getting a hand crafted book of art instead of digital scans. If art is a big thing for you (which i assume it is to most comic collectors) then physical is better imo. All of those awesome drawings and front covers can be displayed and it feels like a proper collection of art. You can also lend friends/family physical comics too. This happened with my destiny grimoire book. My brother was into destiny lore and i lent him my grimoire which he enjoyed. That wouldn't be possible with digital. Also, if you ever plan on selling them in the future to get some money for old rope then you can with physical but not digital. Overall i think there's just something more special about physical. Artists and authors put all this effort into crafting these pieces of art that are meant to be read in hand for the best experience and i can't help but think that I'm doing them a disservice when i read it on a tablet. There's just something special about having a comic in hand and available to display forever. There's tons of things convenient about having them digital but there's something so much more special about physical comics. It's like drawing on paper vs digital. It can be done digitally if you have the right equipment but nothing ever beats the feeling of putting pen to paper. I'm just a traditionalist when it comes to art and books in general. However, i say do whichever is best for you. Physical is best for me but i definitely see the appeal of digital comics and there's plenty of advantages so it's all down to personal preference.

Another note I would like to add. Physical comics are not really a thing outside of the USA. My closest comic shop is 3 hours by bus, fuck that. I really don't mind spending the full retail price for a digital comic, because it's still cheaper than a bus fair or train ticket plus the price of the comics. Also, amazon are always having sales on the kindle and comixology app. Waiting for a year to read a story for a third of the price is not a big deal. And while yes physical comics are nice to hold, i don't have space. I get 2000ad weekly and that stays in a binder on my shelf. Those books arrive ripped sometimes and take up a lot of space after a few months. My tablet can hold everything and my books always arrive in perfect condition. I've never had a digital comic rip so far.

So I'm relatively new to comics, which is great actually as omnibus collections are so amazing right now. I've quickly gathered though, for me, it makes sense to get the 'must-have' runs in hardback. Jeff Johns Green Lantern, Infinity War, etc. Also some Absolutes which really make the art stand out such as various Batman and Superman stories. Lots of the other stories for the average reader might just be served better to be rented from library for gone digital. I'd love to read the Death of Superman omnibus, but didn't want to shell out the $90 when it was released last year. Art from the 90s I'm not a huge fan of. Yet I'd like to read it regardless. Digital is perfect for that. I'll still buy some hardcovers, Hickman's Avengers when it gets reprinted etc, but it's too pricey anyway to get everything hardback.

I’ve dabbled in digital comics for years too, like if a movie is coming out, they’ll usually have sale on their digi app. But I have always been mostly physical. I’m now getting my wake up call though because my fiancée is moving in to my apartment so I’m clearing space to go to my storage unit and it was such a bitch having to move all of those long boxes and shelves of tpb and harcovers. I might end up taking advantage of one of these monthly subscriptions.

I've been reading some comics digitally from time to time, especially when I'm tying to decide on whether or not I should get said comic book based on whether I enjoyed it or not. However, I mostly read the comics through NetGalley and Edelweiss for free. The only time I buy a comic book is if it's in graphic novel formats. That way, I can get the entire stories of each comic book story into one volume instead of collecting various issues to understand the stories being told. Awesome video as always Cap! I might try out these sites myself soon!

I like physical comics but I mostly read old stuff from the 60s. I'm not a collector, I just want to read the comics, so my options are either the omnibus collections or digital scans. I tend to get both - an omnibus edition if it is easily available and/or something I am passionate about, and digital copies of everything else (usually bought from ebay on CD's). Like you thought, I don't really like computer of phone reading, but I'm thinking of finally getting a tablet purely for this.

i only get print if I'm collecting. Kindle/Comixology are my go to for just reading. Yes they should be slightly discounted for digital vs print. In the 1990s the market was saturated making comics worthless, which is why I like print on demand to retain the value of the ones you do collect

I'm torn on this issue. On one hand, I really love reading physical books. On the other hand, I'm just now getting into American comics after years of reading manga (I've read some of the big ones, like The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, The Death of Superman, and Marvels, but not much else.) so it's hard to resist how cost-effective having a full back catalog is. If I had a local comic shop, I'd go physical all the way, since I'd be supporting a local business. As it is, we have some gaming shops but no-one dealing in comics, so I think digital is where it's at. Also, while I'm here, I should ask - does anyone have any good recommendations for comics to start with?

For europeans readers, having advertising in the middle of our reading its intolerable blasphemy . Therefore, this is why I read on digital first, and If I enjoy what I read, I´ll buy it later on paper, but only in trades. Also, what do you think of DC INK and DC Zoom? I don't think Amazon is going away. anytime soon. I think the industry needs to pick a medium and stick with it. Those books arrive ripped sometimes and take up a lot of space after a few months. My tablet can hold everything and my books always arrive in perfect condition. I've never had a digital comic rip so far.

Lets face it guys, comics need to go digital. I used to hate digital comics but i finally bough a cheap Fire Tablet and buying comic volumes digital. The thing i love more is all my books are in one device, then i can use it on the park, a plane, during work. I am still buying some HC and TPB of my favorite comics.

Personally I only collect trades. Specifically Ultimate Spider-Man, Hellboy, Bendis' Daredevil, and New 52 Batman. I will admit to using a torrent site to keep up with current stuff like Nick Spencer's Spider-Man and Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil, and Tom King's Batman.

I like buying Hardcovers of comics or volumes of mangas, but single issues are just a no from me. Digitally they are great though.

3:25 - Why I buy (digitally) Image and borrow The Big Two. Also, exercise patience and books drop regularly in price. Also...sales. The KC Library is cheap. DPL gives 25 borrows. Houston was 30 I believe.

@Dragon Mason "Trolling" is when you don't mean what you say and all you're trying to do is get a rise out of people. It is stupid to pay money for these serves because you A. don't really own the book and B. any given book can be censored or removed from these services and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it, consumer.

Yeah I like having the physical copy, but for the hard to find comics such as Spawn I'm thinking digital they are extremely rare and at the moment overpriced.

I keep a digital copy (cbz/cbr) of every comic I've ever owned and bought from anywhere over the last 30 years--papers and digital alike. Fuck rental. I bought it, I OWN it! It's a joy to read them on my 224 PPI 10" windows tablet, directly from a micro SD Card.

I read digital comics because I no longer live in America. As a child I spent every dime I could get my hands on until they got too expensive. When I hit my mid 20’s comics rose to $3.00 each and that was just waaay too much for 20 pages. Now I pay a monthly subscription and I can read everything I want. That’s a bargain.
