After living in Manhattan NYC for 20 out of 33 years of my life, I’m finally leaving. It’s where I grew up but I’m just done with it. It’s still one of the greatest cities in the world but the NY city and state government has utterly abused my trust and money, and public safety and infrastructure and the subway have gotten worse and worse, as has the government's handling of crime and the migrant crisis. It’s time to leave.

This is the magic of NYC. As if it was aseptic everywhere then there would be no point in traveling. NYC in the 1980s was even more "wild" and unpredictable. It was dangerous alby through it until it breathed freedom. And it was never a city for family people. That's what the other 99% of cities in the US are for. What sets NYC apart from other cities is, so to speak, the spirit of the old, free and crazy times (the 1970s and 1980s).

I live in Connecticut. When our kids were little, my wife and I would take them frequently to Manhattan. We saw Broadway shows, the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, ate at nice restaurants, did some shopping, went to the Westminster dog show at Madison Square Garden, and saw the sights from the top of the Empire State Building. We always felt safe walking around and rarely encountered any problems. Then something changed. Now, I have no desire to go back at all. People are randomly attacked in broad daylight and you have to be constantly on alert. No thank you. You made the right decision.

I lived in NYC for a decade and moved out last April. I think if you would've asked me pre-COVID, I would've said I can see myself living in NYC forever. The city completely changed post-pandemic. I felt unsafe on my commute to work every morning, couldn't walk down the street without fear of being randomly attacked, and garbage everywhere. Like you, I had so many questions about where my tax dollars were going. Wifi and charging stations were put into many of the subway stations, which while useful, was this *really* the most pressing issue that needed to be addressed in transit? I left in April 2023 and have not been back since. This video and many of Cash Jordan's recent videos are a constant reminder that I made the right decision. I would love to start my own family soon and I know the city is not the right place for that step in my life.

This is quite common in the US -- it's citizens (regardless of which party is in charge), have no idea where their taxes are applied to. The US Media always harps on us Europeans (UK/GM) paying up to 40% of our taxes to the Government - this is true. What isn't reported to the American Public, is that we SEE where our tax dollars go to. The London Subway (Tube) is constantly being upgraded and is far more cleaner than NYC's by any means. Our crime rate is far lower than the US and our social systems do provide for medical, shelters, welfare requirements. We, just like the US have many immigrants arriving and difficulties, but for whatever reason, I don't understand why American Citizens aren't informed by their local, state, and federal agencies to exactly how their tax dollars are being spent and to whose pockets it is going. There is NO reason for NYC to be paying that exorbant amount of money for ONE new subway station -- impossible. I hope the US Citizens get a better opportunity to hold it's leaders (in both parties and levels) accountable for spending issues as the current state appears unacceptable. With much love to the USA from Europe.

@xiaomanyc I’m so sorry to hear that the once beautiful and so multi-cultural city of New York has come to this. It is truly a sad state of affairs. Our family hails from Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia,Canada and unfortunately we are experiencing the same things here. Our provincial government years ago decided that our mental institutions were costing too much to maintain, thus sending many people with mental issues to the streets making it unsafe for them and us as well to live in a normal society. And to add to the pot, our Federal government also decide that decriminalizing hard drugs would help all the people with substance abuse. To me, it just escalated the problem. It is sad to say that for a young family like yours, trying to find that fun loving childhood that you once experienced is getting harder and harder to come by. Our own son who lives in the picturesque city of Victoria says he has to scope the area of the playground to make sure there are no needles or drug paraphernalia scattered about before he will allow his 4 year old and 17month old to play on it. Like how has it come down to this? My hope is to see that they will bring back the institutions to help these people who can no longer survive without assistance and make the streets more safe. One day…. On a side note, thank you for the very educational and entertaining videos that you put out. We love your work. All the best to your new home! Crime everywhere appears much higher than it is, compared to the past, because everybody now has a video recording device in their pocket today, in the form of a smartphone. This wasn't the case 10, 20, 30, 50 years ago. That is, the chances of a crime being recorded is nearly 100% today, vs 1% or lower in the past. If you watch old movies & cartoons, they often had memes about "calling the men in white coats" when someone was acting crazy. That came from the fact that we used to have an entire infrastructure for mental health care, including dedicated staff who would respond to mental health emergencies (rather than police), and facilities where the patients could be brought. (Those big state hospitals & asylums.) Unfortunately the care administered at such institutions ranged from "indifferent" to "sadistic". We had the infrastructure, but the techniques and understanding of mental disorders were lacking. Regardless, the Federal funding for such programs was cut bit by bit until it was finally ended entirely during the Reagan administration. That is why the mentally ill homeless population exploded in the 1980s and hasn't gone down since, and why there are so many abandoned mental institutions in every state. I've always wondered what we could accomplish if we had a mid-20th Century level of funding and dedicated infrastructure for mental health, combined with modern-day understanding of treatment. It wouldn't be perfect, but I'll bet it would be one hell of an improvement over our current strategy of "there is no strategy".

The social fabric of our communities deteriorate, our architecture and services deteriorate, loss of opportunities, loss of safety and crime only goes up all because our hard earned money is only going to one place... the pockets of the people we voted in and to the immigrants who get looked after to ensure they will always have voters. I'm from Denmark and we pay roughly half of our income in tax. But i've never had to pay for a doctor or education in my life and our country is very civilized and well taken care of. I even get paid well for attending education so i don't have to worry about income. Great roads, infrastructure, social security etc. and there's a reason we are the number one happiest country in the world. And the first 50.000 kroner ($7,100) you earn each year is tax free. There's a great video on KZbin by "Travelin' Young", an American family who moved to Denmark just a few years ago and they made a video comparing taxes. If you compare Danish and American income after tax, the difference is actually not that big since you have federal tax, state tax etc. and also need to prepare financially for doctor's appointments, education etc. by yourselves. While Denmark is not perfect at all, it's definitely a great example of how to spent tax money correctly.
