I grew up in Toronto. My ancestors came to Toronto in the 1890s. They carved the stone on the old bank buildings and worked the rail yards. When my Dad was a kid living at Pape and Danforth, it was the edge of the city. He pulled his wagon to the nearby farms and sold produce to the neighbors. Toronto will always be my home, but it has changed and I have changed. I have a large five bedroom house on five acres in central BC. I'm surrounded by towering trees and my mortgage is less than the cost of a modest apartment in TO. I miss some aspects, but I can't see myself going back.

Construction is very expensive now. Especially if you’re constructing luxury apartments or high rise buildings in a large city like Toronto. Not to mention labor shortages and corruption scandals. I worked in several construction projects in Metro ATL so I can tell from experience.

I remember when I was 7 there was this ice cream place outside my neighborhood i loved it sadly it was closed and deconstructed, I was very sad but wonders what they replaced it with… *So anyway skip 3 years later*- THEY REPLACED IT FOUR TIMES! Toronto’s change mirrors Austin, TX’s change. Austin used to be Texas’ best kept little secret back in the 80s and early 90s, a “big little town” that was the live music capital of the world, a population of just 150K or so, and a laid back easygoing crowd of people. Now, it’s Neo Silicon Valley. F*cking everybody wants to move there, and has, including big tech companies and has effectively driven out the original population since they can no longer afford to live there. Now it’s just a massive college and big tech town and that “keep Austin weird” vibe is long gone. Hell, even when I lived there 20 years ago it still had some of that vibe left. Not anymore. Terrible. I hate to see this happen to any awesome city.

My sis used to live in Austin and moved because of increasing costs of living + stagnant pay. It's unfortunate how things evolve this way, but that's the cost of living in an urban space. This phenomenon holds true for small urban centers that feel the sting of change when retirees and economic refugees move away from bigger cities. I'm glad I had the opportunity to live in Canada from 93 to 94. It was a great city to live in and I enjoyed myself immensely. I left California to have that opportunity and at the time California had 18 million people, now there's about 40 million. I moved to South America this year. The weather is always warm, today January 8 it's 35 c. I own my house with my wife and gas is regulated by the government so it's always a low price. We can go shopping for a months food for 250 dollars. Eat in a restaurant similar to Swiss chalet for 18 dollars for the two of us. Here it's summer when Toronto has winter. It's beautiful with mountains all around etc... I wish you the best of luck on your move and kudos for having such courage to do that. It does take courage to move. I get my pension, I retired early deposited into a Canada account and use my card here so it's convenient etc.... Do all your homework.... Get everything you need from the government before you go. I arrived in May and I received my ID card and I now have a dual passport. The health care is also something to think about. I pay for mine. 100 dollars a month but it covers everything, even eyeglasses. Good luck 🤞

There was a sign around the area saying something like houses are going to be built, and once we drove back from the city 2 years later and saw the field completely empty and the sign still up. The average house costs 1 million, not even joking but I’m not complaining since it’s a very clean city.

@@Ebits21 I live in the GTA. It’s not as safe as you think. Did you miss out on all of the random acts of violence going on at TTC stations, buses, subways and streetcars. I was physically assaulted on the bus, broad daylight, this winter. No one did anything to help. I guess you missed the story of the woman who was set on fire on the bus, people trying to push others onto the subway tracks with some of them succeeding, stabbings and physical assault on streetcars, or stabbings at the stations. I’ve reported two people who were armed with knives. One was at a TTC station. The other was at Eaton’s centre. There was that lovely group of eight 13 to 16 year old girls who swarmed and stabbed a homeless man to death. Shall I keep going? If I could afford to leave, I would.

I live in Freelton, Ontario. It is a rural area of Hamilton and I am near Flamborough, Waterdown, Burlington, Milton, Guelph. My drive home are along some concession roads and get to see horses, cows, sheep and even Alpaca. Love it out here and am still close to lots of shopping. My commute to work is 60KM to the airport via the 401 but would rather do that than live in the city of Toronto.

@Seamus Doherty I blam bad mental health resources/help. Even once you get into a program to help with drugs/mental health it's super half assed. They make a 1 year program 6 months because "the wait is super long" but all that happenes is the people in the program get rushed through barely get better then boom back to drugs and suffering. It's stupid and really needs to change if anything is going to get better.

Just visited Washington, DC. The metro (subway) and Virginia Railroad services the burbs. Great transit. Lots of innercity bus service too. Folks still drive, but commuter options are good. The fare system on the metro is based on distance, which makes more sense revenue wise than the flat fare model. Clean, safe trains, buses, and stations. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Once you move from the city to the country, you realize why people choose the simple life in the country. I moved 100 miles East from Dallas 60 miles from Shreveport. Prices are cheaper. People are friendlier and best of all zero traffic compared. The traffic is even worse if you want to go into the city good luck you’ll be there for awhile but coming out it’s not that bad and the road work does go on for awhile. The rent is crazy everywhere but it’s even worse in the city and sometimes the apartments/homes aren’t even worth the price that they are renting/selling for

Very lonely. 1 bedroom with crawling pets was 750.I have never seen a crawling pest before. 😳. Coming from Dk is like. Whaaat, what are you doing here.
